Lombard LCD Backlit?

I have 2 Lombards now. 1 screen is broken. Not physically but a big spot shows when I boot. And 1 screen is 100% ok, but too dark and brightness up or down doesn't help. Ifixit.com has everything except backlit of LCD. Has anybody ever taken apart and LCD from an Lomabard? Is it possible to replace the backlit from the broken one and put in the dark one and make one good LCD. Or is that too complex?
Thanks,
ivnj

I'm officially a genius. Somebody order me a trophy.
I managed to take both lcd apart and noticed both were samsung tx145 or what ever. I don't remember the exact number but both were identical.
So I took the hinge with the orange cable that goes to the motherboard out. Took out the the whole cable with connector that goes to the LCD and the other cable and wire that goes to the green board with red and black wire in rubber circle.
I replaced the hinge and cable and board with the screen that was too dark.
And now I have 1 good screen, bright and no spots. And 1 bad screen. Before both were bad and now at least 1 is good.
And daystar said 190 dollars to fix. A 4 dollar #0 2-1/2" screw driver from ace hardware and now I did it all my self. Saved 186 dollars.
Not bad.
Thanks,
ivnj

• Does the iPad have a backlit keyboard?

I require this piece of information.

If you can see the screen at all, the backlight is ON.  When the backlight is OFF, the entire screen is blank.
Not meaning to sound rude or harsh, but have you every held, used or seen a LED/LCD backlit device with a virtual keyboard (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, or any of many dozens of smart phones or tablets)?  The "keyboard" is nothing more than a coordinated collection of touch icons, just like all control features in any app on an iPad.  Since the screen is an LED backlit LCD screen, the only way to see anything at all on it is to have the backlit on.

• Pantone eye-one Display 2 monitor calibration software - auto starting

Hi,
I just calibrated my monitor using Pantone's eye-one Display 2 hardware and software (3.6.1). Now, when I login, the eye-one match software icon appears in the dock, bounces a few times, then disappears.
The software instructions made no mention of this. What is it doing? Can I stop it? Just as a matter of principle, I really don't like programs starting themselves and doing unknown things.
Thanks!

The x-rite i1 display 2 won't work with any LCD lit panels. I've attended a x-rite training only six weeks ago and the guy explained the issues. So if you want to calibrate any LCD backlit screen, you have to get a more expensive thing -- maybe the Colormunki will do, but for sure the i1Pro will work. It's still a quite expensive upgrade.

• The screen is flimsy and doesn't hold up properly.

Is any one else having the same problem with the macbook Air, My screen falls back when open, it's super flimsy.

You have it on your lap?  then its normal

As per Apple.com
Learn what you can do if you experience one or more of these issues with the hinges on your MacBook Air.
Unable to close lid completely.
Broken or cracked plastic near one or both of the hinges.
More than one inch (2.54cm) of free play while opening or closing the lid.
Lid falls freely into closed position from a 30-degree open position. (From a closed position, open the lid approximately 30 degrees and let go.)

IF you are LIFTING your Air up and claiming that the monitor will flop open at or past 90 degrees.   Normal.
or the same if youre using on your lap, couch etc
You said------falls back when open
Be very specific,   Define "when open"  at what angle?
Define WHAT it is sitting on.....while lifting?  or while sitting?
Due to the thin nature of the LCD backlit LED monitor on the Air, you would NOT WANT a very tight hinge.
Why? Excessive hinge resistance would cause the screen to BOW (and possibly crack), especially on a longer fulcrum from the hinge in the case of the 13" screen...... Ergo it is designed logically to be “looser than” a traditional macbook Pro's hinges for a very good reason.
IF on a flat surface "just past 90 degrees" it "falls on its own" that is ABnormal
differentiate WHERE/HOW it is opening up at,     on a flat surface, then its ABnormal

• Problems printing with HP 9180

Hi all,
I know that this has been discussed previously, but I have tried all of the suggestions I could find and I am still getting muddy/dark and unsaturated prints from my HP 9180.
I have a Macbook Pro with the LCD backlit screen which is calibrated with a Spyder 2 Suite. I am using Aperture 2.1.1 and have all of the latest updates for Aperture and Leopard, except the latest RAW update which messed Aperture up.
I am printing to HP Advanced Glossy paper.
I guess that I am setting something wrong in the print dialogs.
Settings that I am using are:
Aperture Print dialog:
Printer: Photosmart Pro B9180 series (AA54A9)
Paper Size: A4
Orientation: Best Fit
ColorSync Profile: System Managed
Black Point Compensation: ticked
Gamma: 1.15
Sharpen Amount: 0
Sharpen Radius: 0
Print Settings Dialog (Paper Type/Quality):
Paper Type: HP Advanced Photo Paper, Glossy
Quality: Best
Color: Application Managed Colors
Source: Main Tray
I have also used:
Aperture Print dialog:
Printer: Photosmart Pro B9180 series (AA54A9)
Paper Size: A4
Orientation: Best Fit
ColorSync Profile: HP PSPro B9100-Advanced Photo Glossy

Print Settings Dialog (Paper Type/Quality):
Paper Type: HP Advanced Photo Paper, Glossy
Quality: Best
Color: Not available to select
Source: Main Tray
Can anyone spot where I am going wrong, or offer suggestions to help me product prints that I know that this printer can produce?

Paul,
Your second workflow looks like what I use, and should be ok.
The first workflow you describe is wrong, but understandable since Aperture's wording is very confusing.
With "system managed" they actually meant to say "printer managed".
In your driver settings you then choose "application managed", so in the end nobody is managing anything.
But as I said, your second workflow looks ok to me.
A while ago I also had horrendous output from Aperture, yet Photoshop printed perfectly.
Reïnstalling the HP set of drivers fixed it for me, but your problem looks different since Photoshop also performs bad.
Maybe reinstalling the drivers helps you too, but maybe you have another problem.

• X-rite eye-one display 2 monitor calibration and new 27' iMac

Hi,
I have been looking at the new 27" iMac to replace a 24" iMac Intel core 2 duo that I purchased last spring. The main problem being that I am a photographer/graphic designer and found out after I purchased this iMac that my x-rite eye-one display 2 monitor calibration system was rendered useless because the monitor brightness was way out of range (too bright) for the calibration software to work correctly.
My question is: Has anyone tried to use the x-rite eye-one display 2 with the new iMac 27" monitor? I understand that they may have fixed the monitor brightness problem, but now the new screen is lit by LED instead of LCD. Has this just presented a NEW problem that makes this color calibration system still useless or does it work despite the fact that the monitor light source has changed?
Thanks in advance for any info you can provide

• Can't get OSX 10.3.3. installed on my souped-up Lombard

Dear folks,
I really appreciate all the advice you gave me a couple of weeks back on configuring my souped-up Lombard for installing OS X. (vis http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3566749)
Unfortunately, I can't get it to install! I bought a universal 10.3.3 installer on DVD from OWC. But the installation hangs every time I tried to run it. It will successfully erase the drive partition I set aside for OS X, unpack and prepare the installation files, and begin processing them. But at exactly the 51% point on "Processing Base System 2", it hangs every time (I tried it several times).
The system doesn't freeze up; instead the normal installation display disappears and the screen goes crazy. Sometimes it shows rapidly-changing static-like patterns, sometimes weird "oily" washes slowly play across it like I was pressing on the LCD, other times I get patterns of vertical bars. Regardless, what happens is that the installation grinds to a halt until I reboot the machine.
So, I tried downloading and running XPostFacto. It doesn't like my system at all! It hangs with a kernel panic during the initial text screen mode. Forget that!
I'm assuming that I'm hosed; that my system is just too far off the norm to allow me to run OS X. But in case I'm wrong about that, I'm posting this request for suggestions. Anybody have any ideas?
Thanks!

Here's the bad news. Panther was never released on a DVD. Panther was a three disk CD set. The OS X installer discs had black labels with a large gray "X". What you obviously have is an OEM disk or a copy of one that will only work for the Mac model with which it came. What you need is a retail Panther package. You should call OWC and insist that is what they provide you or return your money.
You should be able to get the proper set at http://www.applerescue.com/. You may also find them on eBay, but be sure you get the real thing as I've described.

• Will this ViewSonic LCD Monitor work w/G4 MDD?

I don't know enough about screen resolution to know whether this particular ViewSonic LCD monitor will work with my G4 MDD. The G4's video card has an ADC connector and a DVI connector. The monitor I'd like to get, which uses a DVI cable, is the ViewSonic VX1932wm-LED 19-Inch WLED-Backlit Energy Efficient LCD Monitor. I read an earlier post here that ViewSonic monitors will work with Macs. The specs for this monitor are at:
http://www.amazon.com/ViewSonic-VX1932wm-LED-19-Inch-WLED-Backlit-Efficient/dp/t ech-data/B002R0JJY4/ref=deasmtd
I appreciate any help. Thanks!

I have the slightly larger VX2235wm which is 22 inches, and the same video card as you on my MDD. I am satisfied with its performance.
The monitor has separate VGA and DVI input ports. The max widescreen res on my MDD is 1680x1050. I usually run at 1440x900 because my eyes aren't what they once were.
I've gotten higher resolution on the same monitor by connecting it to my MacBook Pro via DVI. Can't remember what the numbers are exactly but I know it's larger than the 1680x1050 on my MDD. The notebook has a newer graphics chipset and 128MB VRAM, so that's not a surprise.
As an aside, I played with both the VGA and the DVI sides of the monitor. I found I have more options for smaller resolutions if I use the DVI-to-VGA adaptor that came with the MDD and connect to the VGA side of the Viewsonic.. I keep the DVI cable attached but tangling over the back of the desk so I don't have to rummage so much when I need to connect the MacBook Pro. It works fine on the DVI cable. As long as I turn off the MDD before connecting the cable, leaving both lines running to the monitor has caused no problems.

• Macbook Pro 17 Anti-Glare LCD Problem

Here is the LCD screen on my MBP on black background. The back light is more or less very uneven.
Is this normal to other Macbook pro anti-glare users?

Hi everyone!
I've just noticed some problems with mine 1 week from NEW MacBook Pro 17-inch Unibody Hi-Resolution Antiglare Widescreen Display (UK specification, display model: 9CAC):
Display illumination is UNEVEN and can be seen when working with dark backgrounds (B&W photos etc.).
I actually noticed it when I start working with my photographs and then decide to check it out with 100% BLACK BACKGROUND.
I can see it while working with some B&W photographs in alight room but I took this photos in the darkness to increase the clearness.
ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE for such PROfessional laptop as MacBook Pro:
I can't understand why Apple would release a matte screen- which is aimed at high end designers, photographers, photo editors, etc, unless it was great quality.
I'm hoping that the comments here are isolated and not all matte screens share the issues.
I've already arranged a replacement from Online Apple Store and my Build-To-Order Unibody MBP 17" Antiglare replacement is on the way now.
So I STILL WANT an ANTIGLARE option.
But if a replacement unit still doesn't look good - I will try and try so on till they manage to produce, quality control and deliver an appropriate quality product APPLE declare to be a flagship of PRO line.
2.3 million pixels of perfection.
With the high-resolution LED-backlit widescreen display on the 17-inch MacBook Pro, you get desktop-quality color in an Apple notebook for the first time. The moment you open your MacBook Pro, you’re greeted instantly by full, corner-to-corner screen brightness. The 1920-by-1200-pixel resolution (133 pixels per inch) means you can view more palettes and windows or watch HD video in its native 1920-by-1080 resolution. Perfect whether you’re working in the studio or out in the field, the display offers a 60 percent greater color gamut than previous generations for richer, more vibrant colors and a 700:1 contrast ratio that makes whites brighter and blacks blacker. In addition, the seamless glass enclosure makes the display stronger and more durable. Because it’s power efficient and the glass is mercury- and arsenic-free, it’s greener than ever. And now you can choose a standard glossy display or an optional antiglare display, depending on your needs.
I took some photographs of my display with the following setup:
1) photos taken using tripod and CANON EOS 30D camera in the darkness to increase the clearness
2) full brightness of the display
3) completely even 100% black background in Photoshop's full screen mode
4) no any adjustments applied to these photographs and I've tried to receive pictures of what and how I seeing it
5) photos processed and saved for WEB in Adobe Lightroom
Photos:
http://picasaweb.google.com/freelancer.by/MyMacBookPro17Unibody?authkey=Gv1sRgCJ nPjbCPk4TVTg#
I'll definitely let you know how it goes with my replacement unit when it arrived.
Thanks

• Will the 24" LCD work on the last version iMac

Hello, I have a 24" iMac (previous generation) with a mini-DVI. How would I go about connecting it a 24" LCD Apple Display?

You're likely referring to the new LED-backlit 24" Cinema Display. I'm not aware of any adapter that allows you to connect a computer with DVI or Mini-DVI (as is the case with your previous gen iMac) to the new 24" Cinema Display's Mini-DisplayPort connector.
They make adapters to use new Macs with their old monitors (mini-DP to DVI), but not adapters to use old Macs with their new monitors (DVI or Mini-DVI to mini-DP).
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

• LCD/LED Monitor Problems

I have just purchased a new 2010 Mac Mini and an LG E2240S LCD - LED backlit monitor. I have this connected using a Mini DisplayPort > VGA adapter.
I have resolution set at 1920x1080 at 50Hz which seems the best setting.
The problem is everything seems very grainy and text especially looks very sharp and jagged around the edges.
Any ideas what would cause this?

The monitor should have a function that is sometimes called tuning. See if that improves the picture.

• LCD or Plasma?

Hi,
I'm planning on purchasing a TV this hoiday season and am contemplating which type. The room I am planning to use dimly lit and I'm not certain which type (LCD, Plasma, HDTV, etc.) would be best. Your opinions and advice is welcome.
Thanks

Plasma tv's supposedly look better if your into referance quality images. They tend to have better color and blacker blacks. However they use more power and some have glare issues in bright rooms. They can also have burn in or ghosting issues, something to consider with gaming. You would have to have the same image on the screen for hours though from what I understand though.
LCDs tend to be a bit lighter I think, use less power and tend to look better in bright rooms as a general rule. They don't have as deep of blacks though because they are backlit. And they don't have burn in issues either which is why they make good gaming and computer monitors.
When properly set up I think both look great to be honest. I personally own a samsung plasma and love it. But if I think I would have been just as happy with an lcd at a decent price.
Now if you can afford it the new LED lcd tvs look absolutely AMAZING! I know I guy that owns his own appliance store and he brought one home to watch football at thanksgiving. This thing was awesome, bright with some of the deepest blacks I have ever seen on a flat screen tv. Not to mention they use very little power. The catch is it costs $3,000.
This is something you really need to go look at and weigh the options based on what you think looks good copared with what kind of deal you can get. If I could have saved $100 I would have had no problem bringing home an lcd tv instead of a plasma.

• LCD as opposed to LED

Could someone help me to understand the difference between LCD and LED? I understand that my I-mac has a 24 inch wide active matrix LCD display. I read somewhere that the LED ones do not have mercury, etc. and are supposedly "safer" to use than LCD. This is somewhat alarming.....what are the dangers of using my LCD display?

They are both still LCD displays. The "LED" description applies only to how the LCD panel is backlit. Most LCD backlighting is done with +cold cathode fluorescent lamps+ (CCFL). They are somewhat like the fluorescent tubes that are used in office spaces. They supposedly have environmentally non-friendly stuff inside, if they are disposed of improperly.
Apple is starting to use LEDs for backlighting in some displays. LED backlighting (if done right) is supposed to provide more even lighting, and they do not fade in brightness over time like CCFL. Apple currently uses LED backlighting in the MacBook Pro models and the 24-inch Cinema Display. iMacs, the white MacBook, and even the 30-inch Cinema Display still use CCFL for backlighting.
In terms of being "alarming" or "dangerous" to the user, there is really no concern either way (as long as you are not planning to take apart your LCD panel).
