Long Backup (14 days) with Time Machine

I have a 24 inch early 2009 iMac that I just upgraded to Mountain Lion.  Years ago I upgraded it to have 8 GB of memory.  (Having 8 GB of memory greatly reduced the amount of times I get the little spinning color wheel.)
After I upgraded, I checked to see if I needed any further updates, did the updates, and my iMac is up to date with all updates.
Now that i have installed Mountain Lion, I wanted to create a new full backup.  I have two Time Capsules and a LaCie 2 TB external drive.  When I attempt backing up to any of these three devices, it takes a really long time.  I have been backing up to a TC for over 9 hours as of this writing, and it has only backed up a bit less than 10 GB in that time.  This was overnight, when nothing was going on on the iMac.  I have tried backups to the other TC and the LaCie and aborted the backups after getting similarly slow times.
TM says it will be about 14 days before my backup is finished.  Total backup size is 371.85 GB
Also, Spotlight says there is 3 days remaining before it will be finished indexing my computer.
I have run a verify disk in Disk Utility, and it says the disk is fine.
When I look at the bar graph running on Disk Activity on the Activity Monitor, the red line (data written) is pretty much a wavy flat line very close to the bottom of the little graph window, with spikes every 10 or so seconds.  (I believe the data shown and the graph shows total Disk Activity for all disks that are mounted.)  There are times when the Data written/sec just sits there at 0 or 4 KB/sec or some other really low number, then it will spike up to a number over, say, 1, 2 and once in a while over 20 MB/sec.
I have done large backups like this in the past that took overnight or the better part of a day or two, but never this slow.
Does anyone have any ideas what is wrong?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — anonymize before posting.

    Do not worry about it.
Time Machine needs that your external drive is formatted in HFS+, or better known as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". This filesystem is used by Apple on Macs and Windows cannot read or write drives formatted with this filesystem, being this the reason why all your devices do not read the external drive except your Mac.
You can only use your external drive to make Time Machine drives. If you store anything different, you may damage the Time Machine structure, so it is better not to use it as a drive to store other data. Instead, get another external drive to do it or create a second partition on the external drive formatted in FAT32 by using Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html FAT32 can be read by Windows PCs

  • After restoring backup new macbook with time machine Firefox will not start. says missing profile

after restoring backup on new macbook with time machine Firefox will n to start. It says it is missing profile although profile exists and profile manager will not start. Also reinstalling does not help. Direct after starting Firefox it says profile is missing and then quits Firefox. Please help edit

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
    * https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Basic+Troubleshooting#w_8-make-a-new-profile
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

  • Cannot backup my imac with Time Machine in NAS

I use NAS from Buffalo to be my backup solution.  Now I have two mac in my office and first one which mac book pro can backup normally.   I've just purchase new imac and set Time machine to backup at the same place with the old one.  But it hang everytime when I start backup and have to push the power button to restart.  I don't know what's wrong with this.

You will probably need to contact Buffalo Technology Technical Support on the web, because their NAS units can be tricky to backup Two Macs with.  Othere users here have had this problem too. It is not really an Apple configuration problem.
    Hope this helps

  • How does Parallels backup exclusion work with Time Machine?

Running Parallels version 9 there is a means by which you may (supposedly) request that a VM is not backed up via Time Machine (Mavericks).  In the Parallel Desktop app, one chooses from the menu Virtual Machine -> Configure, selects the Security tab, and clicks in the box for "Time Machine Do not back up virtual machine.".   Having done that, however, if you launch Time Machine preferences, click on "Options...", this brings up the window of "Exclude these items from backups." and there is nothing in the box indicating that the Parallels VM is being excluded.  The Time Machine exclude list in that window on my machine is completely empty. I think this is pretty crummy.  How do I know that the Parallels VM is really being excluded, and why doesn't it appear in the list ???

I'll follow up to my own post.  I found that one can execute some Time Machine commands via the command line and so:
    $ sudo tmutil isexcluded ~/Documents/Parallels/Windows\ 7.pvm/
    [Excluded]          /Users/myuserid/Documents/Parallels/Windows 7.pvm
It's unfortunate that there did not appear to be a "listexcluded" verb (sigh), and it's really terrible that one can see that something is excluded via the command-line, but it doesn't appear in the Time Machine whiz-bang graphical interface.  I'd call that a major bug.

  • Before downloading lion, i want to backup my computer with time machine and a G-DRIVE Slim.  But how can i use time machine to only backup my system once?

Just wondering, how can i use time machine to only backup my system once? Just this once and not on a weekly basis?

Upgrade. My three year old Mac Pro and year old MacBook Pro have no problem. Both seem faster.
And there's your problem reading entirely subjective views on forums, from people that might or might not have decently maintained systems, good operating practices, or whatever....
Strangely, when most companies issue new software, it is because they believe (and believe they have checked) that it is better than the previous version.

  • Unable to remote backup my laptop with Time machine

    Hey Folks
After upgrading to Mountain Lion I have been unable to remotely backup my laptop.
I can directly backup to the timecapsule.
Here is the details of my setup. Please note I can run ethernet cables for testing but at the end of the day I need to keep this setup.
    My setup:
ATT Uverse 2Wire Router with both Network notifications turned on and Wireless network turned off.
Airport Extreme router is in the DMZ zone of the router.
Airport ExTreme Router (current version just bought it a month ago)
This acts as my main wireless router
Back to my MAC turn on it
         Network port forward turned on
                   TimeCapsuleAccess
                   tcp  5678
                   udp 5678
Direct IP to the Time capsule
                   tcp  578
                   udp 578
      {wireless connection to timecapsule}
Time Capsule version 1(setup as an wireless extention to the Airport Extreme Router)
Back to my MAC turn on it
         {usally use a wired connection to timecapsule but also use wireless connection when I walk around my place}
    MacBookPro17" late 2011
Back To My Mac turned on
server connection ATT Uverse Modem IP:5678  <<<---- can't create the connection
I was able to get back to my TimeCapsule with Lion successfully but now something as died.
Has anyone got any suggestions?? What have I forgotten?
More details can be given on request.
    Thanks

  • Can't Backup with Time Machine under Mac OS X 10.6.6

Ever since I updated my Late 2009 Core i5 iMac with the 10.6.6 Combined Update, I can't backup my computer with Time Machine, either the Automatic Backup or the Backup Now command.
After backing up 20 MB or so, I get a message that the backup was interrupted because of disk problems, presumably the Time Machine external disk. I get the message to retry later and, if difficulties persist, to use the Apple Disk Utility to correct the problem. I followed the advice to no avail, retrying later, erasing the Time Machine hard disk and, the last time, erasing the Time Machine hard disk followed by a new partition creation.
As I filed a bug report for the Time Machine Back up command when Apple was developping Mac OS X 10.6.5, I am inclined to believe that the previous beta software bug was re-introduced by the 10.6.6 update.
I will use the Disk Utility on the Macintosh HD to check whether it would solve anything. Repairing the permissions and checking for disk problems. If the problem isn't corrected, I will submit a bug report.

    Update:
It was the Macintosh HD which was corrupt, reporting 1 fewer folder and 1 more file than it should have. The solution was to start the iMac with the Mac OS X Install DVD, use Disk Utility to repair the Macintosh HD, and back up the computer with Time Machine.
The Macintosh HD became corrupt while installing the Mac OS X 10.6.6 Combined Update, a not so infrequent problem I am told.
In this instance, Time Machine realized the corruption problem, warned me, and stopped the back up before the records were falsified. Great!
Time Machine performed as expected, but its warning should have identified which hard disk was corrupt, saving me the confusion with the Time Machine external hard drive. Had Time Machine warning clearly identified the corrupt drive, I wouldn't have erased my Time Machine backup.
That's one point to improve with Lion.

  • Funny bugs with Time Machine connecting to MacBook when reboot

Found a bug for Time Machine.
Reboot with TM disk connect to the MacBook. Most of the time, there will be no show of TM Disk on the desktop and connect thumb drives will not detect too. And do a normal shutdown, I can still feel the warm air venting out from the MacBook.
Have to remove the battery for a few seconds, replace it back and power up. Then everything will back to normal. If reboot with thumb drive connect, such symptoms will not appear.

Yes, that message is not some of Apple's best work.
Most likely, there's a damaged/corrupted file that Time Machine is choking on. See #C3 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).

  • Can I restore with time machine with different OS?

My internal hard drive went kaput, but managed to backup to external with Time Machine.  I was running Mountain Lion.  I replaced the drive today, and rebooted to install Snow Leopard (have the disks), but it won't properly restore.  Do I need to upgrade to Mountain Lion for it to properly restore?  If so, how do I best do that without repurchasing from the App Store.  Many Thanks in advance!-Stan

  • Macbook backs up with time machine to time capsule, imac won't

I'm going nuts, and have spent hours trying to fix this. My family moved from PCs to macs a couple of years ago- we've got three Macs having varying success backing up with time capsule. 1. Our macbook backs up with time machine to time capsule- it even backed up today. 2. Recently attempted to back up the imac for the first time- it starts backing up (maybe 3%) but stops and I end up getting an error message-it has never backed up- 3. The macbook pro has backed up many times but recently has not backed up. It gets the same error message as the imac when time machine is used to back up to time capsule. As an added treat, i attempted to backup the imac with time machine to an external hard drive, it began backing up, stopped and I got the same error message: "time machine error unable to complete backup an error occurred while copying files." Little help!

  • I have been using a WD Passport with Time Machine on my iMac.  Since I upgraded to Mavericks, the backup no longer works.  What do I need to do?

I have been using a WD Passport with Time Machine on my iMac.  Since I upgraded to Mavericks, the backup no longer works.  What do I need to do?
I assume that upgrading the WD SmartWare is irrelevant as it is not being used.  Should I upgrade just as a precaution?
One complication is that I have renamed my user since the last time I backed up.

the problem is with the WD Passport drives.   I also have one, and since upgrading to 10.9 I can no longer use mine either.  See if this solution works for you: https://discussions.apple.com/message/23943103#23943103

  • Can no longer backup with time machine to WD MyBookLive.

Earlier I got the "OSStatus error 2" and now I get a message that the backup failed, "time machine couldn't back up to mybooklive. Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder."
I've signed in as guest, which I have always done in the past but it keeps failing.
I am using WD MyBookLive and can access my files from my iphone without issues.
Current OS X v 10.9.2. updated back in March and my last successful backup was April 13, 2014.
Am up to date with updating all software.

No matter how long is take but at least i will be an online back up. I couldn't find anything useful so if there is some that could give a hint or just for to know if this is doable. Any suggestion, thoughts or ideas?
