Long boot time after 10.8.4

Question

Boot time takes about 10-12 minutes after installing the 10.8.4 update on a mid-2012 MacBook Pro.
I looked around for a solution for this on discussions and saw that removing a microsd adapter would fix it. But I don't have a microsd adapter plugged into the MacBook. (MicroSD cards don't mount anyway, when I'm using an adapter. Just SD cards)
Same symptoms as other threads. Spinning wheel, cursor stuck in left corner and can't be moved, then the desktop appears after some time.
Did various resets as others suggested, repaired disk permissions, reinstalled the 10.8.4 combo update but nothing seems to be working.
Any ideas?
