Long delay going back to coverflow

From cover flow I press play to start playing an album (that works)
now one the song is playing, I believe that if I press MENU it should go back up to coverflow, but it doesn't happen.
I have to hold menu for about a full second and it goes back to the main menu with "music" selected.
Is this the expected behavior? I could have sworn that a few days ago it simply went back up to coverflow, making it easier to switch to a different album.
Not that if I do a short click on the menu button while the album is playing, nothing happens.
I think this started happening after I updated my library to a full set of albums (450+ albums and 6500+ tracks)
Is there a bug in the firmware that makes it misbehave with large libraries? I still have another 100+ CDs to add (my whole classical collection)

Mine can take around two seconds from clicking Menu to the Cover Flow showing. I'm sure the iPod could do a better job of caching the data that's going to be needed (not least because it had it all when you selected the album that's playing) but it's not a big deal - I just forget the lag every now and again and press menu twice when I don't want to. I've got about 22,000 tracks on it.

Long Delay Going to Sleep Mode

This is a strange problem that just recently started.
My Mac delays going to sleep from both my login and hers whenever my she is logged in. If she isn't logged in, everything works fine and the computer immediately goes to sleep as it should.
I have zapped my parameter memory, repaired permissions and verified that the hard drive is working properly. I've shut down all apps running under her login. There are 90 some processes running in the background, but nothing looks suspect.
Maybe I should try dumping her login preferences?
Any ideas? TIA.

Okay, some further troubleshooting has revealed that this problem is being caused by ARD. Last week I turned on Remote Management under Sharing. I checked my log files today and discovered several recent crash logs for my ARDAgent.

Turning off Remote Management fixed the problem. I noticed that Apple has a new update out for Remote Management (ARD):

I'll try the update to see if it fixes the problem.

Long waiting times when going back to the organizer after doing changes of images. Elements 11.

After doing changes of images and going back to the organizer I have to wait a long time. This was not the case when I used elements 9. I have a lot of images stored around 18000. There are also often long waiting times when I move around in the organizer. Any suggestion?

Click the Firefox button, go to Add-ons, then Plugins and disable "'''My Web Search'''". This is adware which runs in the background and spends its time trawling the web searching for ads to feed you.
Also, something shows in your system details with the number '''2,5,3,1 '''. Can you tell me what that is please? It's located in the same Plugins menu.
Similarly, I see three versions of Veetle. Disable the older ones if you don't need them.

OK, just remembered that someone had posted a solution for this "login loop" issue.
If you follow the directions here and be sure to enter all of this EXACTLY as it appears here, you may be able to solve this problem.
You will first need to boot into single user mode, which will bring you to a scary looking text only screen. Don't be frightened.
To do this, startup holding the Cmd-S keys together. At the entry which shows root# enter the following exactly. Write it down now, since you won't be able to copy/paste. Pay attention to case and spaces. Everything is lower case. The only spaces are between /sbin/mount and -uw, between -uw and / and between rm and /var/audit/current
Type in
/sbin/mount -uw /
Hit return and then at the next root# prompt, type in
rm /var/audit/current
Then hit return and at the next root# prompt type in "reboot" no quotes. Don't type in anything new until you get the root# prompt after entering each command.
If after entering rm /var/audit/current, you get a message back saying "no such file," then just type in "reboot" at the prompt.

My iPad is going back to the main screen with many of my applications. I have several desk tops, laptop and a Nook Color and none of them have any problems, so it is not my internet. Any idea how to fix the iPad or should I just toss it?

You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. When I type there's a long delay before the letters show up on the screen. Also when I backspace it goes crazy and erases entire sentences

This began several days ago and seems to be a problem in Firefox. I did download an update recently but don't thjink the problem developped simultaneously. When I used the computer's feature of resetting the computer to a prior day (May 19, before the update) I could not get Firefox to open at all. So I undid the reset but typing in Firefox is very difficult due to the extremely long delay in the letters I'm typing showing up.

Try a Restart.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
Resetting your settings
You can also try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your device settings again.... All of the settings in the settings app will have to be re-entered. You won't lose any data, but it takes time to enter all of the settings again.
Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Apple recommends this only if you are unable to restart it.
Or if this doesn't work and nobody else on the blog doesn't have a better idea you can contact Apple.

Long delays with BI Office and many Excel cell comments

We experience long delays in Excel spreadsheets that have many cell comments when opening, switching between, saving, or closing the spreadsheet with BI Office add-in installed. Uninstall the plugin and the delay goes away. It appears the plugin scans through all cell comments at specific times, whether there is OBIEE embedded content or not. I would estimate the spreadsheets have hundreds of comments. This basically kills usability to the point that people prefer to not install the add-in.
We are using 10.1.3.4.0. The problem exists on both Excel 2003 and 2007.
Other than "don't use cell comments", has anyone found a solution or workaround to this problem?

but I suspect your going to first have to create a data recovery drive
Create a data recovery, undelete boot drive
to get your data off the machine,
then do a #20 to eliminate the bad sectors as that's why your getting the "pinwheel" it's getting a delay reading from the drive, right when your trying to log in too, what a bad spot for it to happen.

Save a Switcher from Going Back to a PC Tonight!

I've been using PCs for as long as I can remember. With parallels available to run Windows XP within OS X, I finally made the switch and bought an MBP. Two weeks and one exchange later, I'm planning to return my MBP tonight and buy a VAIO SZ or Thinkpad.
But the truth is, I'm hoping someone on this forum can save me from going back to a PC. I've posted individually on some of these issues below, but haven't read any solutions. If you've got a solution to any of the following, please let me know!
- HOT HOT HOT: This is my biggest problem. Completely idle w/ no programs open = 48C. Running a few apps = 60-65C. Peak = 78C. These seem in line with intelmactemp.com, but even the top/wristwrest at 65C is too uncomfortable to type on for longer than 1/2 hour. I've been waiting and hoping for thermal paste break-in, but no signs yet. Even then, I've read to expect only a 2-5C drop, which doesn't sound like much. I think I need 10C.
- EXCHANGE INTEGRATION: I use Goodlink on my Treo 700p, and sync Notes and Tasks with Exchange so that I never have to sync my Treo with my computer. Entourage is horrible, but would be acceptable if it synced Notes and Tasks. From my Google searches, it sounds like there is no way to edit and sync Notes and Tasks with Exchange in OS X. Anyone have a solution?
- GARAGEBAND HISS: When I record a podcast, I hear a hiss in the background every time I speak. Again, Google search and posts on forums yield nothing. This makes GarageBand unusable to me for podcasts.
- ICHAT QUALITY: The very first time I tested ichat with my brother, we got a huge screen with great quality. Clearly H.264 at work. In the 10 times since with him and friends, I haven't been able to get that screen, even while monitoring Network Doctor and plugging in directly to high-speed broadband connections. The quality now is worse than Skype video on Windows. Any clue what's going on?
So that's it. The rest I can live with: poor battery life, heavy laptop for features, lack of dual-layer, no PCMCIA like the VAIO SZ which has both PCMCIA and ExpressCard, etc. But the above is just killing me, both on the hardware and software front.
Please save me from switching!

Well I switched 2 years ago, some specific suggestions:

--- Mine runs at 43 deg idle 50 deg running apps, so this has never been an issue for me. Sorry....

--- Exchange doesn't sync notes and tasks. I use the palm entourage conduit to sync calendar and addressbook, but gave up using notes and tasks to sync - they just live on my palm now.

The only thing I'd suggest is to get out of the PC 'habit'.
The OSX interface is much nicer with its 'floating' windows, widgets and expose features.
The adjustment pallets in office are great.
Most of all I like the look and feel of the true fonts rather than windowsvery bitmapped 'jaggy' ones.
IPhoto, iWeb and Aperture are great for photography
Mail is nicer to use than outlook
Spotlight is superb for finding things really fast
I simply couldn't work without iDisk for syncing my work and swapping files
Need I go on...?
Switching is about workarounds, giving some things up and finding new delights. You can't expect your mac to behave just like your PC as well as being a mac....

Returning my (2) Droid Incredibles and going back to AT&T iPhones

I decide to get rid of my iphones because of constant dropped calls on AT&T service in NYC area. However I was only able to tolerate the Incredible for 7 days before switching back to AT&T and my iPhones. Here are the reasons:
1) Call Quality- The call quality on the HTC Incredible was horrible on both my devices. I don't attribute this to Verizon and think it has to be on the HTC end. I spoke with a Verizon Corp store yesterday and they said that HTC is working on a ROM update to fix this issue and there is no current ETA. What happens is on calls the sound gets scratchy and is very difficult to hear and words that come over the line keep dropping. So if someone is speaking you only hear about every other word. It is extremely annoying and I can't believe that HTC and Verizon would release a phone with such a defect. Since there is no ETA for a fix I'm going back to my iphone since the calls are always crystal clear and the service sometimes intermittent. Here is the link to a thread on HTC about the issue.

2) Ease of Use - The layout on the Incredible is very difficult and not as polished as an iphone. Using an iphone is so easy. The incredible takes a lot of extra buttons to do some simple things. Like using the address book. The iphone has the alphabet Vertically in the contacts so you can quickly hit the last name of a person you need to reach.
3) Cut & Paste in Gmail- There is no cut/ past in gmail client. I primarily bought this device because I'm a heavy gmail user and i thought it would be better integrated in which case it is. You can get all your labels, star items etc. But I can't believe there is no cut/paste function in Gmail client. What a waste. Apple went thru so much when the first 3g phone came outyou think soemone would be listening or remember that.
4) Screen is unusable outside- The phone can't be used outside in any type of clear sunny day. I practically got hit by a car in manhattan because I was trying to pull up a phone number which is extrmely difficult to begin with ( see item # 2) and you can't see anything because of the OLED screen. This is a big difference from the iphone.
5) Media Management( Music, Video) - This is definitely a big downgrade coming from an ipod/ itunes experience. I use my ipod a lot so this experience stinks. Not as easy to use.
6) Battery Life/Multitask - Since the phone does Multitask you have to always be aware of what services are running in the background. If you don't your phone won't last long. Again I feel that isn't polished enough for everyday use and they are going to have to keep designing the multitask to manage battery power effectively. This reminds of the old PC days were you had to keep hitting CTRL+ ALT + DEL to kill services. Why bother, I can't manage a phone like a PC device. This is 2010.
My overall experiece is that I think there is still alot of work that needs to be done on the OS layer and Hardware layer to get this phone to compete with an iphone experiece. Apple does quality very good, i feel that this phone has very bad quality.
How in the world can you design a phone that you can't even see the screen outside in the sun. Just mind boggling.

i use mine in the sun too with no problems. there's a glare if it's at the wrong angle, but no worse than any phone i've had. you can also adjust the screen's brightness, etc.
my call quality is fine, but i have seen a NUMBER of complaints about this...i just haven't had that issue.
as far as my address book goes...i jus start typing the name i want and it narrows down to the the person i want. usually 3 touches to the screen and i'm there. doesn't seem to be too much work. (type a and all a's show up. then m and it narrows to amy and amanda and i jus touch the one i want). i actually love the way it handles it.
battery life/multitask....i downloaded an app killer.....and i just periodically kill the running apps with one touch. i get a full day off of a charge, which is good enough for me. i also ordered 2 spare batteries (ebay for $12...and they came with a wall charger). i switch out the battery in about 10 seconds in the morning, and only have to charge everything sunday night and wed or thurs. i've never had an iphone, but i've seen stories of having to make an appointment to go to the store to buy and have apple change your battery??? that may be exagerated though.
media....if you're an ipod guy then the iphone is prolly better for you. i just don't like the level of control that apple has over everything. i have a zune and my wife has a zen. i find it MUCH easier to manage our music and videos between our devices and the incredible (particularly using an sd card). i've never been a fan of the ipod...but if that's what you have and like, then i'm sure the iphone is much more compatible.
i guess cut and paste is an issue. i just don't use it or have a need so i didn't realize it doesn't do that?
the new iphones are coming soon and i'm sure they are better than the old. hopefully they'll include some pretty basic and convenient features, like expandable memory and the ability to change your own battery (maybe they do?? i don't follow them...but i've heard they should be pretty sweet....and apple usually doesn't disappoint it's following).
