LONG display of rainbow pinwheel/beachball

I am fairly new to the mac OS. I have almost made the FULL switch to using only the mac. It is a great system.
The problem I'm having is when I sit down at the machine and want to start the mail app or Safari app. I end up waiting a while for the machine to think about it them it finally opens the app.
During this wait I get the lovely beach-ball/pinwheel. Not sure what's going on here. Why is it so slow to get going?
I do have a large photo collection (980 photos), as well as home movies. But I have about 15 GB left on my hard-drive?
Any suggestions would be great as my PC never hangs likes this...
This is a new thing the MAC is doing...

My thought is to try to find out what process is using lots of cpu cycles, thereby causing the freeze and the spinning beachball.
To try do to that, start Activity Monitor from the Utilities menu. Under Monitor, select Show Activity Monitor. Then, click on %cpu and make sure the triangle is pointing down. Then, do whatever it takes to make the freeze occur. Look in Activity Monitor to see if some app is consuming lots of cpu cycles - perhaps 50% or more.
If you can identify something, someone can probably offer a suggestion. Often it is a matter of removing a corrupted preference file. Sometimes 3rd party items interfere with Apple apps and cause these hangs.

  • Freezing and Blackout problem: Pinwheel/Beachball icon, please help!

I've had my MacBook Pro for 3 years now. It's finally starting to act up.
Out of nowhere, it will just freeze up, and the pinwheel/beachball thingy icon shows up, and there's nothing I can do but power off with the power button, and press it again to start up.
These "hard shut downs" I'm afraid could ruin my computer? I've done it too many times and it's getting scary.
ALSO: I've had the computer suddenly & unexpectedly just go black on me, nothing on the screen, like it's just died. This is with my power adapter plugged in! Is this a battery issue or a hard drive issue? My battery no longer holds power for more than a few minutes without the power adapter plugged in (it always has to be plugged in or the laptop will die).
Someone who knows, please tell me the causes for these 2 problems
    (1. freezing/pinwheel icon and 2. blackout screen/dead laptop)
    THANK YOU!!!

I too am having the same problem (or at least a similar one)! My MBP is also 3 years old, and it also is suffering from random freezes. I don't know if this is true for macluvr7, but when my computer freezes, background operations still generally continue; in other words, iTunes continues to play music, files will continue to download, and discs continue to burn (at least for a while).
The screen will also at times go black (or white, once or twice), although this happens less often than the general freezing problem. When I perform a hard reboot, the operating system often hangs during its loading process, forcing me to reboot multiple times.
Although this sounds like a possible hard drive issue, I have run multiple scans with Drive Genius II and have found nothing. My battery is relatively new, and works beautifully, so I don't think that's an issue (in my case, at least). Any thoughts?
    Thanks very, very much.

Since upgrading to Mavericks, 10.9.1, pictures that come attached to emails no longer display.  There is only a blank space that after about 1 minute, has a small box with a question mark.  Double clicking on the box will open the image in a separate window.  It's very slow and tedious for multiple images.  How can I go back to attached and displayed  images?  If I click on "Forward", the images appear instantly in the email to be forwarded.

    Scott,
My problem seemed to fix itself.  Or, by shutting down the computer one night, instead of putting it to sleep, may have reset something.  Since updating to Mavericks, I always (or usually) let the computer sleep overnight or anytime I'm walking away from it.  A few days ago, I was updating notes for my kids about how to find all my stuff and how to turn on my computer, so I wanted to rewrite the start-up procedures for the iMac, just in case they ever need to.  Well, I shut it down one night so the following morning, I could write down each step.  Lo and behold, the images, etc. are all there again!  Solved, but I'm not sure why.

  • My artwork no longer displays correctly after updating to iTunes 10.5.

With the most recent iTunes update, the artwork is no longer displayed properly.  The songs on my hard drive display fine in iTunes. However, the artwork for songs on my iPod do not display in iTunes (I have limited space on my computer's hard drive, so when I manually add songs to my iPod, I delete them from my hard drive, therefore the songs on my drive and on my iPod are different). Thankfully, the artwork does display properly on the iPod itself.  So it is not a corrupted artwork issue.  When I am playing a song from my iPod through iTunes, it WILL show the artwork, but ONLY if the playing song is highlighted.  Once I highlight another song, the artwork display window goes blank. This is regardless of whether the artwork window is set to "Now Playing" or "Selected Item."  Also, if I change the window setting to "Now Playing" and I highlight a song other than the one playing, the window automatically reverts itself back to "Selected Item" and again no longer displays the artwork (unless I go back and highlight the currently playing track).  Additionally, when adding artwork through the "Get Info" display for groups of songs, it will not display the artwork in the "Get Info" box after I have added it to the file(s) as it used to do prior to updating the software.  This is true for songs both on the iPod and on my hard drive.  The artwork is indeed being added, because when I click "ok" and then play (and highlight) the song, the new artwork displays.  This is really frustrating!   (I should note that I tend not to use "automatically download artwork" because most of the music I listen to is quite obscure and often does not have artwork available by iTunes without me adding it myself).

  • ICal no longer displays caldav calendar but it's still there...

I find myself to have a strange problem... iCal no longer display a caldav calendar (which is my work exchange calendar via davmail app). But, it still appears to be there. In iTunes it is still listed in the calendars which can be synchronized with my iPhone. In fact, it is still synchronizing with my iPhone and up to date. If I add a new identical caldav calender in iCal, iCal only displays one calendar, as if there are no more, but in iTunes then two identical calendars are listed and on my iPhone all events are displayed double...
Any suggestion to get my calendar displayed in iCal again, or alternatively, how to remove the hidden agenda from the system so that I can resetup the calendar? By the way, I also have an MobileMe calendar running.
I look forward to receiving some hints as I am not yet able to solve this one.
    Cheers!

Problem solved by myself Rebuild the calendar database by exporting the ical archive and then importing it. After that the hidden agenda was gone in Itunes. After a fresh set up of the caldav calendar in iCal it was back in iCal and iTunes. The mysterious ghost agenda is gone. Hope that this explanation may help someone else in the future.

  • Stuck pinwheel/beachball and other coinciding issues

I've recently run into a major problem on my 2006 Macbook Pro.  Soon upon booting to the desktop in Snow Leopard, the mouse icon changes to the spinning pinwheel/beachball as if waiting on a process to complete.  I can open programs from the task panel, such as Office or the calendar, but the pointer icon remains stuck as a pinwheel.  I am unable to open any drop-down menus from the top such as Finder, and can't get Force Quit to open.  Additionally, the Snow Leopard partition of the computer seems to be unable to establish an internet connection.  There is a list of the usual networks detected, however trying to connect under each one yields a "little or no connectivity" alert.  Oddly though the other partition on my computer (Windows 7) has no issues with connecting, as I typed this question out using the same computer under Windows.  Finally, I cannot get the computer to shut down in Snow Leopard, neither by going to Finder nor by tapping the power button, and I have to hold down the power button to do so.

If you want to replace your battery you can get one fairly cheap on eBay http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=aluminum+macbook++battery+A1280&_sacat=0&_od kw=aluminum+macbook++battery+A1278&_sop=12&_osacat=0

    MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008)
    Removing the battery:
Shut down the computer. Disconnect any cords connected to the computer.
    Turn the computer over.
    Locate the access door latch.
Push down to release the latch, this sets it in the open position, and remove the access door that covers the battery.
With the latch still in its open position, gently pull up on the battery tab to remove the battery.
Note: The latch must be in its released, open position to remove or replace the battery and access door.
    Installing the battery:
To replace the battery, make sure the latch is in its open position.
Hold the battery at an angle and slide the lipped edge of the battery below the brackets on the outside edge of the battery bay. Gently press the battery down.
    To replace the access door:
Line the access door up with the bottom case and the tabs in the battery bay.
Lower the access door into place.
Make sure it is level with the bottom case of your MacBook.
Press the latch into place, so it is in the closed position.

  • IMovie no longer displays my iTunes or my iPhoto libraries.  Can anyone help me get them back?

My iTunes and my iPhoto libraries no longer display in iMovie.  I have to drag and drop directly from the applications.  Can anyone help me get the them back?

I tried to restore from back up but this was the first time I connected my phone to my computer so when I ran backup my contacts did not return.  When I go to mobileme.com my calandar shows up but not my contacts.  I could cry.

  • Desktop is no longer displaying all the colors on it's monitor.

My desktop computer is no longer displaying all the colors on its montior.  I've replaced the monitor with a known good one and the problem remains the same.  The desktop is 6 months old and when I purchased it, the first one had to be replaced because of this exact same issue. This appears to be a common problem.  Is anyone else experienced this is issue and has HP recalled any of these specific desktop's because of it?

Wjile there can be no consolation with your plight, you do have the replacement option under warrant.  BTW, it does help if you state the exact model or product #.   Saying a "series" is like called out that I had a Chevy.

  • My printer menu is no longer displaying in English. I can't read the display to try to troubleshoot

My boss' printer HP Color LaserJet CP2025 - menu no longer displays in English. I can't read the display to troubleshoot or reset. Is there another way to change the setting?

I have not verified these steps, but this is what I located:
    A. To change the display language back to English, please perform the following steps:
    1. Press the right arrow 2 times, press the OK button (you should be in the System Setup menu).
    2. Press the OK button again (you should be in Language).
    3. Press the right arrow until you see something that may be English, press OK button. The menu is a continuous loop, so if you miss it the first time the option will return.

  • Mail icon no longer displays unread message count

The mail icon in my dock no longer displays the number of unread messages. Is there a fix for this?

  • How do I solve this problem:Photo's no longer displayed (Adobe Flash player 13,0,0,214) in online photo album maker (Webprint.nl) after update to Firefox 29.0.1

After I (automatically) updated to Mozilla Firefox version 29.0.1, the online photo album crreator of Webprint.nl no longer displayes the photo's that I uploaded.
The photo's are displayed again when I use an older Firefox browser (version 28.*) from an another computer. This is my old (WIndows Vista) computer that I use when my new Windows 7 computer has problems.
It looks like the new Firefox has a problem with Adobe Flash player 13,0,0,214; which is the newest version according to Adobe.

  • Ios 6: Apps no longer displaying on my iPhone 4S

After downloading ios 6, I noticed that certain apps are no longer displayed on my iPhone 4S screen.  I had these apps grouped under 2 different folders and the folders plus the apps were removed from my screen.  I can view the apps under purchased but the only option it gives me is "open".  After I open, I can access the apps, but it does not install the app back on my screen.  It is frustrating because I do not get my notifications and I have to go to the app store to access my previously purchased apps.  Does anyone know how I can get these apps back on my screens?  Please help.  Thanks!

@Briantopp, THANKS so much... I feel a little silly, but am so happy that the solution was that simple.  Thank you so much for responding to my question.  I really appreciate it!!!!!

    Hi,
This behavior may also be caused by following factors:
•NetBIOS over TCP/IP is not turned on (enabled).
•The Computer Browser service is not started or is turned off.
•Then File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks is corrupted.
Please follow these steps to check these factors:
Step 1: Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP
1.Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Network and Internet Connections.
2.Right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties.
3.Click Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and then click Properties.
5.Click the General tab, and then click Advanced.
    6.Click the WINS tab.
7.Under NetBIOS setting, click Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP, and then click OK two times.
8.Click Close to close the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box.
    9.Close the Network Connections window.
Step 2: Start the Computer Browser service
1.Click Start, type services in Search box, and then click Services.
2.On the right side, right-click Computer Browser, and then click Restart.
    3.Close the Service window.
Step 3: Install File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks
1.Click Start, click Run, type ncpa.cpl, and then click OK.
2.Right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties.
3.Highlight File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks, and then click uninstall.
4.Repeat above steps and check on File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks to install this item again.
If the issue still persists, please post back the error message when you try to access the shared folder or files.

  • Images no longer display properly in Firefox

I use ancestry.com where they have a lot of images of documents - not PDFs - and this morning they no longer display, but instead seem to show underlying html or other code. I noticed in the google home page, the icon for the google apps no longer appears - really odd things are happening. Most web sites are fine. Have screened three ways for malware, downloaded and installed latest Firefox browser - no change.
I have a screen image that shows the issue, but can't figure out how to post it here.

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:
You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.
*Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
    *Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
    *Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)
Clear the cache and cookies only from websites that cause problems.
    "Clear the Cache":
*Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
*Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
*Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window
