Long document greenhorn needs help
I want to create a user manual.
Regarding formating, I looked at the Apple iPhone Manual. Something along these lines would be nice.

I've never created a book or manual with decent formating, or better said, a polished look.
I have used Pages to an extent. But other than some letters and envelopes, I mainly use the Page Layout side of the program to create one page fliers. For this, I have always used text boxes and inserted graphics when needed. Easy to move things on a single page using page layout, without wrapping slowing me down.
The reason for this post is that I need some help before getting to far into this manual.
1) So from a greenhorn on LONG documents, such as a book or manual, I take it that using the word processor makes more sense than the page layout with text boxes that are linked, as everything naturally wraps upon doing inserts or deleting, or upon cut and paste. That is, there is no need to link one text box to the next as I would have to do on the page layout side, right?
2) Regarding Styles when using Pages, say I decide to change the font of all Chapter Titles after I've typed up everything. Is there an easy way to do this AFTER the book is typed up? Or should I get all my styles and fonts and font sizes established before I start typing away?
3) Are there any templates with styles that are close to the iPhone manual?

As your document is going to be very text-heavy, the word processor mode is absolutely the one to go for. Even in that mode, Pages handles images very well in case you will illustrations etc. As you mention, your don't need to link the text in anyway, as the text just goes in one long flow. As you might want new chapters to begin on new pages, you might want to insert page breaks at appropriate places in the Insert > Page Break menu.
2) Regarding Styles when using Pages, say I decide to change the font of all Chapter Titles after I've typed up everything. Is there an easy way to do this AFTER the book is typed up? Or should I get all my styles and fonts and font sizes established before I start typing away?
Instead of changing the font manually for all your titles, you might want to use styles from the styles drawer. They vary from template to template, so find one that comes as close as possible to the look you have in mind. Perhaps one of the outline templates would be best if you want to mimic the looks of the iPhone manual. Also, if you start out doing your text in outline mode, the application of styles are taken care of for you (there's a short tutorial on using the outline mode on Apple's website: http://www.apple.com/iwork/tutorials/#pages-outline ). Using styles is also a great help when you want Pages to auto-generate your table of contents.
When you're done with writing up the document you can tweak the styles. If you change the style of your level 1 headings, for example, the changes are reflected in all instances of level 1 headings throughout the document. Here's how you do it:
1) Make sure that the styles drawer is open.
2) Mark some of the text for which your want to change the style, for instance "Heading 1". You'll now see that "Heading 1" is highlighted in the styles drawer.
3) Make the changes to the style that you want to make (font, size, colour—spacing can be changed in the inspector).
4) Right-click on the style in the styles drawer and choose "Redefine style from selection". All instances of "Heading 1" are now changed.
You can of course do this with the body text and other headings as well. If you've never used the word processor mode before, it may take a bit of time to get used to this. Compared to Microsoft Word, Apple has implemented styles very nicely, and are far more easier to control and adjust than in Word. If you're doing a long document, the time spent on learning this is well spent. It'll pay off in the end!

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
Paste into the window of another application.
Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line

to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. Can't create Word Document report - need help
Hi,
I have been trying to create a report using a word document. I downloaded an example from ni.com that has Export_Info.vi. When I try to run it I get this error:
Error 1003 occurred at Open VI Reference in New Report.vi->Export_Info.vi
I traced the error back to New Report.vi which is a VI that comes with the LabView package. There is a Open VI reference that when it tries to open Word_Open.vi gives an error. So for some reason I can not open Word_Open.vi without an error, and it comes with the Report generation office library.
Does anyone know what could the problem be?
I tried reinstalling everything and i still keep getting the same error. This makes it impossible to create a report now.
Any help would be VERY appreciated.
Thank youYes I have it installed. When I went to open up Word_Open.vi it opened with an error and it said that the property was not valid.

I've had many issues with my .ost data file (couple years) with: very slow going into outlook 2007, scanpst.exe 3-4x before its "clean", and have to run it few times daily.
No major issues i can pinpoint, but just SLOW, hangs at times, file less than 1GB, IT people just mess it up more, etc.
NEED some PROFESSIONAL minds to help me get this data file cleaned up once and for all... forever hopefully.
Any help greatly appreciated.Why the need to repair it?

1. Create a new Outook profile a different name and a new ost will be created ( leaving the old one there)
2. Close up Outlook completely, delete the existing.ost and re-open Outlook to create a new one.

I have a really interesting dilemma that I really need some assistance with.
I took a 8 panoramic photographs of 8 individual lines of text and I need some help to re-expose the old words.
The images can be downloaded from my flickr album.
The photos I have posted show written text from an 18th century MIT professor's journal. The professor was fired and historians would like to know why. The only problem is... the professor had etched out crucial words/names to keep us from knowing what was originally written. In some cases, he etched out old words and rewrote newer words in there place.
Please download and play with the image and let me know if you have been successful. -or- let me know what I have to do to pull out the ink.

The image was shot with the Canon 6D in conjunction with our Macropod photomacrography system and the images are shown as they exist on the page.
I work closely with the researcher who needs to interpret this journal and I know that the faded ink has been neither transferred from the next page -or- stamped from the previous for two reasons.
1) The images are very high in resolution. If you download the full size image, you can see down the fibers in the paper. The ink is only shown on the surface of the fibers (this indicates a stamp as you suggest).
2) It is not a stamp or a transfer because we can look at what is written on the previous and following pages and they do not match the writing. We also see the words slanted as they should be.
This author is notorious for etching out ink. He even describes his technique in century old texts in Cambridge. He used a tool made of graded glass and and a pick in conjunction with minor amounts of a solution. However, some remnant ink still exists where it has been removed. Furthermore, he only removed words that contain critical information such as names. In some cases, there is also a small imprint superimposed onto the marks from the etching. However, 200 years of rebound was enough to make this extremely difficult to see.
If you can convince yourself that the subtle ink splotches are, in fact, words that have been removed from the page that is gown (as we have convinced ourselves over the past year after hours of examination) you will help us achieve our goal.
I've used techniques such as color-inversion, leveling, extreme contrast, but I have limited photoshop knowledge about how to best analyze and process these images in order to achieve the solution.

What is the version of your Adobe Reader? It sounds like you are using the desktop version of Adobe Reader.

Atwittsend I would recommend uninstalling and reinstalling the installed Adobe Creative software titles. It is likely reinstalling Mac OS 10.9 will lead to damage of the licensing files. Please make sure to use the uninstallers located in the Applications/Utilities/Adobe Installers folder.

Airport Extreme wireless no longer working. Need help!
Until a couple of days ago, I had my brand new Airport Extreme (ver 7.2.1) connected to a cable modem and everything was ok. My Macbook and my Airport Extreme were going wireless fast and easy.
After moving out of town, I’ve changed internet provider and I had to buy a ethernet modem, thus I bought a NETGEAR ADSL2+ modem (model DM111P) and suddenly I lost my wireless connectivity.
The modem looks working just fine. Infact, if I connect my Macbook to the modem NETGEAR DM111P with an ethernet cable, everything is ok.
Also, if I connect my Airport Extreme to the modem NETGEAR DM111P with an ethernet cable, and than I connect the Macbook to the Airport Extreme with another ethernet cable, everything is still fine: I can surf the web without any problems.
But when I try to go “wireless”, my Macbook is not able to find any base. I tried reseting my Airport Extreme to the factory settings and starting over, but It is impossible to “configure” the airport express wireless, because the Macbook doesn’t see it.
I’ve tried also with a wireless pc, but it was not able to find any wireless device.
I tried reseting my modem NETGEAR DM111P and my Airport Extreme to the factory settings and starting over again and I’m still not able to establish a wireless network. I can only access to the internet via ethernet cable. I’ve also turned off encryption. The computer still didn’t see the network. The IP address looks to be valid: 10.0.1.1.
I don’t know what else to do.
Is the Airport Extreme to be considered out of order and should I obtain warranty service or it is just a matter of settings? If so, what kink of settings?I have been having a similar problem using 802.11g
with the netgear DM111p it's happy with ethernet but apparently has compatibility issues with AEBS
I found a number of reviews from AEBS users who have effectively given up trying to make this work

App Crash..Sorry long post but need help
I installed lightroom 3.4.1 ( trial version) on my Windows (Vista 64 bit) laptop and it worked like a charm for two days. Now when I start it I get "lightroom-Opening Catalog: DSCxxxxx.JPG.lrcat" and the "windows" window with 'Adobe Photoshop lightroom 64-bit has stopped working" . I have un installed and re installed both with and without a restart and get the same results. I tried to find anything in the support pages but was unsuccessful. Then the "chat" window came up and I talked to a person named "banner" He/shewas very nice until I asked for a specific solution, he/she then became no use at all and kept directing me to this or the PAID support. I just want to get this program working again as I really enjoy it with my Elements 9.. Any ideas?

To get out of the problem, you can rename the LR preferences file as follows:
On your Win Vista system, while LR is closed, click on the start button and - under "Search Programs and Files", enter the following:

Then press Enter
You now see a folder called "Preferences", within which you see a file called "Lightroom 3 Preferences.agprefs"
Rename the file "Lightroom 3 Preferences.agprefs" to "Lightroom 3 Preferences.agprefs.old"

You cannot edit the content of the PDF file using Adobe Reader.
Or are you trying to delete the document(PDF) file?
You should be able to delete the PDF file like any other file on your computer.

Today after doing research on the support website for Adobe ShockWave flash player, I'm here as a last resourt.
Allow me to explain the issue!

I've waisted people's time because of this issue.
I'm using an HP Windows 7 Laptop with latest version of Windows 7!
I have Adobe ShockWave 11.7 the LATEST VERSION and It is a great program.
However in one of my simulators which is a V500 Evita Ventilator simulator from the company Drager, the performance is HORRID, and when I say horrid, I mean HORRID TIMES 30 and then some.
Keep in mind that this has been tested by the company on other computers, and it works just fine, however on mine the waveforms and data is choppy, slow and what it will do is it will be working smoothly one second, the next second It lags and then catches up, then lags again, and It basically drags along miserably. I used this program online and then when I contacted Drager the owners of the simulator, they thought I get a DVD of the simulator. THEY GAVE IT TO ME FREE OF CHARGE. I got it, and It was still slow and Jerky. I had used Google Chrome to use the simulator online HOWEVER, when I used the DVD, It was still slow. I have a LOAD of computer space, and have tried uninstalling Adobe Shockwave, Reinstalling it, then doing that several times. NOTHING. NOW WHAT??
I'm desperate right now. When I say DESPERATE, THIS HAS GOT TO BE FIXED AS SOON AS POSSIBLY POSSIBLE.

The thing is other things that require Adobe Shockwave work just fine. I use a lot of simulators.

Need help connecting to the internet via Dial-up?
Hi! My son and his mini have moved back to Vermont, and where he is only dial-up is available. I thought the hookup would be simple......I haven't a clue. I have been on high spped cable for so long that I need help!!!!! Here is what I tried. Phone cable to the modem. (Can't connect it directly to the mini because it only takes an ethernet cable) USB cable from the modem to the mini. Using the Verizon software we got nowhere because we could not get a connection...Need help, Thanks Bill
The first bit of info is which Verizon number to use to dial-up, so that it is a local call. Is your son going to call from Essex Jct or somewhere else? Basically we need his area code and first three digits of phone number, if you are comfortable giving that. Otherwise you'll have to call Verizon and ask them for the local number to call.
Then we have to look up how Verizon wants login info. Perhaps another customer can help here. The conventions vary from one ISP to another. Please don't give us you login here!
That should be enough to get you connected and surfing. Then we have to configure the mail program. But again a little research or help from another Verizon customer will do the trick.
Please don't install their software. I've spent countless hours removing ISPs' extra software from friends computers. Such software does not necessarily make things faster and it leaves you with a non-standard system. It's also about getting their hooks into you to push more advertising at you and more revenue their way. (This helps explain why they are so eager for you to use their software BTW.)
There are techniques to speed up dial-up, but they don't involve extra ISP software and ads. They have to do with keeping the ads away in the first place. -

I have tried to follow recommendations on previous posts and I would like to be told where I can clean up my code and how?
