Long import times Ricoh GX100 to LR versions 1.3 & 1.4

Compared with importing 10mp raw files originated in a Pentax K10D, similar size files from my new Ricoh GX100 seem to take an eternity. (10x longer is typical). I shoot and record DNG files in both cameras which should import into Lightroom without problems. I use SanDisk Ultra II 2Mb cards in both cameras.
Has anyone experienced such lengthy import times from the GX100? If not, can anyone suggest the cause and a possible remedy? (The Ricoh GX100 won several awards last year so I cannot believe the camera is intrinsically slow).
Many thanks
David

Don, thank you for your ideas. I have carried out a trial shooting the same scene five times on the same SD card in the K10D and GX100. In each case I formatted the card in the respective camera. The card was a SanDisk Ultra II.
I then imported each batch of five pictures into LR copying the photos to a new folder, importing and rendering the new images.
The K10D completed the task in 4 min 20 seconds
The GX100 completed the task in 16 minutes 50 seconds.
K10D file size is 16.25mb and measures 3872x2592 pixels
GX100 files size is 14.44mb and measures 3648 x 2736 pixels
So you can see that import and rendering times are about four times longer for the Ricoh files. But, the Pentax files are slightly bigger. You can see why downloading 100 files gets frustrating!
I wonder whether DNG files conform tightly to a standard. (Only Adobe would be able to tell that). I used one card in my experiment in case an earlier card of like specification performed more slowly. The scenes were identical to minimize another variable.
Windows XP 2Gz Pentium 4 processor and loads of memory.
Puzzling, isn't it?

  • Very long Import Times

I have an MP4 movie file about 172MB in size. I wanted to pull it into iMove 08 for editing but when I select the file and begin the import, states it will take about 280 minutes. I tried a smaller version about 80MB an only took 20 minutes to import? So 172MB, maybe 50 minutes right?
Is the stated time by iMovie correct ? I have seen other posts where users have also indicated an import time of 280 minutes. Does iMove state this long import time and then adjust it to a more accurate calculation once it has read part of the file? Is the 240 minutes a real import time?

Believe much of the time required for import may be associated with the "thumbnail generation" process for simple file imports. The length of time required to generate thumbnails will depend on a number of factors to include, CPU power of your platform, the number of processing currently being performed, the display size of your importing file, the frame rate, and the duration of the clip. DO NOT RELY ON THE FILE SIZE IN MAKING YOUR ESTIMATES! iMovie '08 appears to generate 1 thumbnail for each frame being imported so the total number of thumbnails is equal to the frame rate time the file duration. While the thumbnails created are all the same size, the amount of data be "condensed" into the thumbnail depends on the size of the source frame and its graphic complexity. As to the the ETFC (estimated time for completion) of the generation process, the initial estimates are just that -- estimates. They will change as the application better refines its progress and can increase or decrease depending on what is going on at any given time. E.g., if you are ripping a DVD in one application, converting a file in another, answering questions in this forum, and generating your thumbnails simultaneously, each process will obviously run more slowly that if just one process were being performed independently.
ADDED: As Winston points out, "capture/imports" can add even more time to import process and will depend on the files being imported. SD DV files will take less time than HDV/AVCHD files.

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • I just upgraded to CC (from LR 5) on Macbook Pro and can no longer import to Network Drive.  New version is LR 5.7.  Help?

Just like the title says: MBP, retina works great with LR 5 installed from CD.  Added CC, upgraded to LR 5.7 and now import "hangs" with no activity.  Have been using LR since version 2.
More info: the problem is writing to my network drive (which has been working since LR 2...  It seems a Temporary Folder is created with permissions 755 (owner=rw, group=r, others=r),
    then nothing more.
Has something changed with respect to LR handling of network drives.  This is a Linux CIFS/SMB share (again, been using since LR 2).  Catalog is local on my MBP.

This is my post and I'm new, so I may not be providing the answer in the "usual" manner.  (Feel free to educate me!)
    Solution:
The mounted volume on MacBook is /Volumes/photowork.  Notice the lowercase 'p' in photowork.   In LR I had selected a mount point
with *uppercase* 'p'.  See screen shot.  Summary: The already-selected mount point was /Volumes/Photoshop.  LR had no complaints.  When
I changed the mount point to /Volumes/photowork LR imported as expected.
This only became an issue since the upgrade, as I simply never tinkered with mount points and so on.  This archive
server has files back to 2000 on it.    Thanks so much to those who responded.

        Feb 17, 2015, 05:36:32 PM    Self test - passed

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Shut down from safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • As of a few days ago, I can no longer import photos from my Nikon Coolpix s7c into iPhoto. Never before had a problem. (it is the version prior to iPhoto 11--all Apple software is UTD)

As of a few days ago, I can no longer import photos from my Nikon Coolpix s7c into iPhoto '08. Never before had a problem.  I sent a request to Nikon for help and they referred me back to Apple.  Help, if possible, please.

As the photos imported to the test library you know that it works with your version of iPhoto (so, you can skip the paranoia about Apple making you upgrade). The issue then is the Library, so
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/"><b><u>iPhoto Library Manager</b></u></a> and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Import time - why so long?

How come it takes so long to import a movie clip into iMovie? I've tried it using the same clip in mpeg4 and dv format. I'm trying to import a clip that's about 25 minutes in length, yet it's taking over 70 minutes just to bring it into iMovie? Is this normal? I'm also a new Mac user, just switched from PC. I'm used to working with clips that load almost immediately in whatever editing program I used on my PC. What is the best codec to use for iMovie and how can I shorten the import time?

    Hi Mike,
    welcome to this forum
    as Graig said:
iMovie is meant to work with firewire-connected mini-dv camcorders
that insults to stay with some standards, as PAL/NTSC (and their specific settings...) and to stay with "dv" as codec..
importing mpeg4 into iMHD needs a conversion (into Apple Intermediate Codec) because any mpeg isn't editable. That conversion is done automatically by iMHD.-
the import of .dv-files should be done faster; you haven't told us, what your workflow is: do you make use of any external drives? how are they connected (usb/fw)? how are they formatted? do you stay in ONE video standard, or do you (incidently) make some video standard conversion? is this "plain dv" or some "handmade, beside-the-standards" pseudo-dv, ... we had that on some other topic here, where someone was able to generate 30fps PAL on a PC... very weird..
this (shortened) list of Qs should show you: use iM as intended.... for some basic function, even editing in QTpro could be easier then to teach the dog new tricks ;-))
besides: here's a how-to for importing DVD's footage into iM

  • How do I deal with project bloat? Long Save time is getting worse?

Here are the FB posts I have got about this issue. I tried to paste them neatly but didn't work.
To be honest I am baffled that such an advanced NLE has so many issues. There should be a warning about the Warp Stabilizer messing up a project I had no idea till now.
This was my question to a PP user group on FB.
I am cutting a 60+ minute doc with lots of source material and the project takes a dogs age to save now which is beginning to interrupt my workflow. I would have thought the save would take less time depending on how much work was done since the last save. I suppose working with Proxies might be the solution but I am already 70% done.
    Here are the responses
Saving the project file on an SSD might be a good idea.
Your project size is slowing you down. Create a couple of projects, each containing a part of the footage. Organized in bins as needed. Call them footage projects. Create an other project named edit and cut in there. Use the media browser to browse the footage projects. Import what you need and use search bins to keep it organized.
If you didn't transcode your footage before you started the project it could be part of the problem. And like the other post says only having the footage you are currently working on will also help. The claim that you don't have to transcode when working in Premiere is misleading because in most cases when working with many different source codecs transcoding will always improve your computers performance.
I had the exact same experience cutting a 90 min feature with 120 hours of Pro Res 4444 footage. Long save times are caused by project bloat, either by having too many assets loaded or a lot of warp stabilizer effects applied. Transcoding will only affect playback performance and exports - it doesn't sound like it's the problem in this case.
only some codecs (4K GoPro, 6K R3D, lengthy h264/AVCHD clips for example) benefit from transcoding and will be snappier and playback smoother. But transcoding will never ever help the loading or saving time of your project
Don't apply warp stabilizsr to everything. All those coordinates get stored in project file
All I can say is that I worked on a Premiere project in November where my computer spent up to 5-7 minutes scanning through all the different directories with footage after the project was open before I could play back the sequences in my project. I ha...
some of the ftg is in need of stabilization so I did use the warp stabilizer but not excessively. 15 x 3-10 second clips. Is there a way of managing the storage of the coordinates too minimize the hit on the project size?
nope. Try importing existing project into a new project.
I usually stabilize footage in a separate project to avoid huge project files, and export the stabilized result. Then I use the stabilized version in the main project.
I also work with Nested Sequences a lot. Working in short, manageable timelines. When opening a large project, Premiere will find the footage for the active sequence first, so I can start working quickly, while Premiere is still finding the rest of the footage.
Could do your warp stabilizing in AE and export renders of them, then import those renders into your project so the are just media files instead of files with stabilizer tracking points.

I usually stabilize footage in a separate project to avoid huge project files, and export the stabilized result. Then I use the stabilized version in the main project.
That would be something like  the advice I would have given
    and  more likely...
Save heavy duty  FX application until after you have locked down your edit. (eg Blurs , Warp, 3rd party FX(MB)
I Create separate sequences or Duplicate Projects for many reasons.  eg CC/Grade  and
Warp Stabiliser ...definitely.  Its even has a slow save  impact on After Effects Projects!

  • Just upgraded to Lion and can no longer import any .mov files ("file not supported") to 3.1.3.  Also can no longer view any .mov or .mp4 files already in library.

Have been using Aperture 3.1.3 with no problems.  Importing from a Nikon D80 (RAW & JPEG), Casio (.MOV) and Flip (.mp4).  Could import and view all videos without issue prior to Lion upgrade.  After Lion installation, can no longer import .mov files (get "file not supported" error) or even view any .mov or .mp4 files currently in library (even though thumbnail is present).  Can watch the .mov files directly on my camera using Quicktime in Finder but can't even drag & drop that file into Aperture.  Anybody else having similar problems?

Still no resolution and Geniuses at store could not assist.  Unfortunately, it looks like not all the applications were ready to support the Lion operating system.  We could not import any .mov files, could no longer view any .mov files already in my Aperture library and could not email any .mov files.  Totally frustrated.  Use Aperture almost daily and can't lose the video functionality.  Was also running dog-slow.  Constantly looking at the spinning wheel.  Geniuses suggested that I wipe out hard drive and reinstall Snow Leopard.  Had full backup on external drive with Time Machine.
Not an easy process though...had to reinstall several times (at 5 hours each time) because I continued to have issues.  Finally figured out that I needed to delete every backup file from Time Machine on external drive from the date I installed Lion because some of the hidden files were still migrating back to Snow Leopard.
    I had to:
    1. Delete all time machine backup files from date/time of Lion installation forward
    2. Do "clean" installation of Snow Leopard (wiped hard drive using disk utility and booted with Snow Leopard disc)
    3. Chose option to reinstall from backup off Time Machine which eventually got me back to Snow Leopard desktop
    4. Deleted Aperture program and reinstalled (I had to install Aperture 2 and then install Aperture 3 upgrade.
    5. Reinstalled iLife apps
    5. Applied all Apple updates available (again this took a few hours because there were several updates from Snow Leopard's original release plus Aperture 3 and other application updates)
Still doing some tweaking on some of my other apps but got everything back to where I originally was.  Now plan to wait on a few version updates from Lion before reinstalling.
I am one of Apple's biggest fans, but was very disappointed in the fact that I lost functionality in one of their own pieces of software (which I use the most!)  by installing Lion.

  • Sudden increase in import time

    <p>On 9/6 I refreshed my database by exporting level 0 information,resetting the database, and importing the data back in.  Theimport took 984 seconds.  On 9/19, I performed the exact sameprocedure, and the import took 5,838 seconds.  While I hadadded some dimension members in the meanwhile, as well as somedata, I can't see anything that would account for such a drasticincrease in import time.  The size of the file on 9/6 was1,032,616 kb, and the file on 9/19 was 1,072,413 - not a bigdifference.  </p><p> </p><p>Statistics on 9/6</p><p>-------Statistics of Birdseye<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0">lan1 -------<br><br>Dimension Name Type Declared Size Actual Size<br>===================================================================<br> Accounts DENSE 2431 2254<br>Time Periods DENSE 23 14<br>Data Type SPARSE 8 8<br>Scenarios SPARSE 25 25<br>Versions SPARSE 5 5<br>Years SPARSE 7 7<br>Customer SPARSE 3281 2412<br>Product SPARSE 10786 10657<br>Commodity SPARSE 122 122<br>Dry - Frozen SPARSE 5 5<br>Family SPARSE 149 149<br>Label SPARSE 486 486<br><br>Number of dimensions : 12<br>Declared Block Size : 55913<br>Actual Block Size : 31556<br>Declared Maximum Blocks : 247722062000<br>Actual Maximum Blocks : 179932788000<br>Number of Non Missing Leaf Blocks : 373943<br>Number of Non Missing Non Leaf Blocks : 385909<br>Number of Total Blocks : 759852<br>Index Type : B+ TREE<br>Average Block Density : 0.2448663<br>Average Sparse Density : 0.0004222977<br>Block Compression Ratio : 0.01842294<br>Average Clustering Ratio : 0.5076456<br>Average Fragmentation Quotient : 7.292331</p><p> </p><p>Statistics on 9/19</p><p>-------Statistics of Birdseye<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0">lan1 -------<br><br>Dimension Name Type Declared Size Actual Size<br>===================================================================<br> Accounts DENSE 2431 2254<br>Time Periods DENSE 23 14<br>Data Type SPARSE 13 13<br>Scenarios SPARSE 25 25<br>Versions SPARSE 5 5<br>Years SPARSE 7 7<br>Customer SPARSE 3284 2414<br>Product SPARSE 10804 10660<br>Commodity SPARSE 122 122<br>Dry - Frozen SPARSE 5 5<br>Family SPARSE 149 149<br>Label SPARSE 486 486<br><br>Number of dimensions : 12<br>Declared Block Size : 55913<br>Actual Block Size : 31556<br>Declared Maximum Blocks : 403588822000<br>Actual Maximum Blocks : 292715605000<br>Number of Non Missing Leaf Blocks : 401337<br>Number of Non Missing Non Leaf Blocks : 437215<br>Number of Total Blocks : 838552<br>Index Type : B+ TREE<br>Average Block Density : 0.2189758<br>Average Sparse Density : 0.0002864733<br>Block Compression Ratio : 0.01815302<br>Average Clustering Ratio : 0.5888489<br>Average Fragmentation Quotient : 3.811463</p><p> </p><p>Any help would be greatly appreciated.</p>

  • If the flash object is placed in 0px div, the creationComplete event is fired after a long wait time

    <Problem>
My requirement is to hide flash object on browser. However, If the flash object is placed in 0px div, the creationComplete event is fired after a long wait time. Is this a bug of Flex? (or Flash Player?)
    <Sample Code>
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="absolute"

    2) Unzip TestSwf.zip.
    3) Copy MySwf.swf, TestInvisible.html, and TestVisible.html to "c:\inetpub\wwwroot\". (Need to install the IIS.)
    4) Visit "http://localhost/TestVisible.html" via IE. notice the creationComplete event fired after initialize event immediately.  -- Correct
    5) Visit "http://localhost/TestInvisible.html" via IE. notice the creationComplete event fired a long time after initialize event.  -- Incorrect
    <Environment>
    Win8.1x64+IIS8.5+IE11+Flash player(13.0.0.182)
    <Note>
If the flash object is placed in 1px or larger div, the creationComplete event is fired immediately.
The problem occurs with other browsers(IE9,IE10,FF,Chrome) too.

Thank you for your response. The computers are indeed running Flash Pro CC 13.1.0.226. I tried to generate a minidump file on four different computers where Flash Pro hung, but was not able to do so on any of them as Flash Pro makes the entire system unresponsive. I get the spinning circle cursor and then the GUI of all apps greys out and fails to update. I don't actually get any sort of error message; everything simply stops responding.
I was probably unclear above; even if I can alt-tab I can't really interact with any other programs once Flash Pro hangs beyond one or two mouse clicks. So on some computers I could right-click on the process in Process Explorer and choose to create a minidump, which then froze, or I might right-click on the process and have it immediatly freeze. I've experienced about two dozen crashes and I've never been able to really use another program or even kill the Flash process in task manager. I also have to power off the computer by holding down the power button, since while I might be able to open the Start menu I can't reach the point of being able to shut it down without it freezing.
From what I was able to see in Process Explorer, Flash Pro was using <1% CPU and 120M private / 170M working memory.

  • Final Cut 5.1.1 / Snow Leopard / Can no longer import P2 video

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard, I can no longer import P2 footage. I get the stop sign and error: no data.
In the import window I can play the clip and everything is fine, but when I add to the clip to the import queue it just times out.
Any thoughts? Is it somehow related to Quicktime being updated by Snow Leopard?
    thanks

Are we a tad snippy? But you are right, the do already have the footage offloaded.
Might be that FCP 5.1.4 is not fully supported under Snow Leopard? There might be OS components that stop the import process. Apple doesn't test all their old software with the new OS, only the current versions. So there might be some basic incompatibility with FCP 5.1.4 and Snow Leopard.
BUT...I'll post my stock answer for this issue...Although most of the things to try are features of FCP 6...
#36 - One or More P2 files failed to import.
Shane's Stock Answer #36 - "One or more clips failed to import..."
Very often in the field with this camera the camera operator will delete clips from the P2 card that they just don't like. That is the beauty of this camera. But, the still for that video file (located in the CLIP folder in the CONTENTS folder)...the still that you see when you are in the P2 Import window...is not deleted. So you will see the image, and the name, but the video file would have been deleted.
What you can do it compare the file names in the VIDEO folder and CLIP folder and see if anything is missing. If something is, then you know what the problem is. You can then just import the rest a few at time, skipping that one.
ALSO...in the P2 Import window...in the P2 Browser, there is a little sprocket drop down menu. Click on that and choose PREFERENCES. Uncheck REMOVE PULLDOWN and then try importing again.
ALSO...make sure your file names aren't too long. Try shortening them and see if that works.
ALSO make sure that the folders that contain the CONTENTS folder doesn't have any odd characters like /!@#$%^&*()?.
    There...continuing to be non-helpful.

  • I can no longer import any of my photos

Background: I have LR 3 Student edition.  I have an iMac running OS 10.7.4, I've been using LR for months with great success.  I have a Canon 60D.
After I updated to 3.6, I can't import photos any longer.  The error message says that the photos cannot be read.
I've done everything, from changing all the preferences, then back to the way they were, I've uninstalled and reinstalled LR from the original disc, I even tried importing from LR 3.2, without the update to 3.6 and that still didn't work.
I feel as though it's something that I did but I can't figure out what it is.  This is the second time I post this issue but there've been no responses.  The reason I think this, is that nobody else has posted that they're having this problem.
I've gone and bought Corel Aftershot Pro because I've become frustrated with trying to make this work.  I've checked other photo forums and have tried every thing I can find.  I've had to use the Canon DPP, which is inferior and Picasa, which I also don't like...I thought about buying LR 4.2 but didn't want to lay down the cash and that not work either.  I'd love to figure out what I've done to make this great program stop working, but I'm at my wit's end.  Amazon is delivering Corel in a couple of days...

  • Long Load Times on Graphic Intensive Games

I'm experiencing some absurdly long load times (1-3 hours) with many games (SPORE, Portal, X:3, etc...) that I believe may be related to how graphically intensive they are. Older games with lower graphics quality (WoW, Civ 4, etc...) load up fine.
When I load any newer game the icon appears in the tray and the computer does nothing else for at least an hour, whereupon the program loads and begins playing immediately--often without any further delays or issues.
I also use Boot Camp to run Windows Vista (Ultimate 32) and experience no delays when running SPORE on Windows.

  • HT6001 I have tried numerous time to update iTunes to Version 11.1.4.  Each time it has failed. I get the message of "This application has failed to start because MSVCR80.dll was not found".  Also I get a message of "Error 7". Advise please.

I have tried numerous time to update iTunes to version 11.1.4.  It has failed every time.  Now I can't even get into iTunes on my PC.  The message I get is "This application has failed to start because MSVCR60.dll was not found.  Re-installing the application may fix the problem."  Okay. Which application?  What steps are needed for this process?
Also, I get this message "iTunes was not installed correctly.  Please reinstall iTunes.  Error 7 (Windows error 126)"  Could someone please assist me in the steps necessary to remedy this issue.  Thanks.

For many users at this point in time (iTunes 11.1.4.62) uninstalling iTunes alone is not enough and they may need to undertake further steps...
Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:
Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

HT1923: Removing and reinstalling iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8

My MBA (10.8.2) iTunes has just been updated to v.11, and while I'm away from the library I thought I'd play some of what is in the cloud.  Thusfar, I've only found one of my purchased albums (indicated with the cloud icon, and it plays correctly).
