Long sleep time

I have just got the new (mid-2011) iMac 21.5", and have observed that it takes a long time to go to sleep - typically 30 seconds after I press the sleep/power button.  This compares with the 3 or 4 seconds it took my previous iMac G5.  This means I have to sit there waiting to be sure it actually does sleep for that long.
Is this normal and should I be concerned?  Why would it take so long, and is there anything simple I can do about it?

I've been having a similar problem putting my new (mid-2011) 27" iMac to sleep over the past few days.  It had been taking about 30 seconds for the system to go to sleep, where previously it had been sleeping within 2-3 seconds.
In my case, the culprit was a setting for the external USB Fax modem I just installed late last week.
In the "Receive Options" menu for the USB Modem, I had set it to "Receive faxes on this computer" (since there was no manual answer setting in the options screen).  Once I unchecked the "Receive faxes on this computer" checkbox, voilà... my system went to sleep as quickly as I had been used to.
Thanks for the suggestion to look in the print queue, Kenneth.  While my answer wasn't a document in the print queue, your suggestion did make me realize that I'd noticed the slow sleep problem after I'd installed the USB modem.

    My wireless mouse disconnects after a long sleep time, always overnight, and pushing buttons, replacing batteries, etc. doesn't wake it up again.  I have to reboot the machine, sometimes losing data, in order to make it work again.  I am kinda new to mac, so hopefully I am just missing something easy.

    It sounds like you are not seeing the Sleep Timer setting in the lower right corner of your currently playing Podcast screen, as illustrated here:

    I would start by quitting all the running apps on the iPhone first:

  • Long Load Times on Graphic Intensive Games

    I'm experiencing some absurdly long load times (1-3 hours) with many games (SPORE, Portal, X:3, etc...) that I believe may be related to how graphically intensive they are. Older games with lower graphics quality (WoW, Civ 4, etc...) load up fine.
    When I load any newer game the icon appears in the tray and the computer does nothing else for at least an hour, whereupon the program loads and begins playing immediately--often without any further delays or issues.
    I also use Boot Camp to run Windows Vista (Ultimate 32) and experience no delays when running SPORE on Windows.

  • [Systemd] Very long boot time

    I have a very long boot time with my Arch.
    Startup finished in 828766ms (kernel) + 63430ms (userspace) = 892196ms
    Especially after login into gnome, it takes quite a while until the desktop is visible. In meanwhile, I only see the wallpaper.  Does anyone has a suggestion how to fix that?

    Wow, that solved this problem. I had 5 GB of systemd logs. I deleted them (after making a backup on another disk), I limited the journal size to only 50MB, and now NetworkManager only lasts 4 seconds to start, and GDM appears 10 seconds earlier. Thanks a lot

  • Recommended sleep time for Cinema HD display

    I have a new 23" Cinema HD display and am curious if there is any information for how many start cycles the display is rated for?
    It seems like cycling the bulb more than three times a day is too much... so the sleep time would be dependent on how the computer is used. i.e., it wouldn't make sense to set it to 90 minutes if I used the computer every 2 hours.
    I'm not going to lose sleep over a scientific analysis of my usage patterns; just curious if the new (just got it at the apple store yesterday) 23" displays had any published ratings, etc.

    Power-cycling the bulbs is definitely not good. Fluorescent lights (like those that illuminate the LCD displays) will last almost forever (but with decreasing brightness) if they are not powered off - the tubes weaken when they are cycled on and off.
    I spoke to a friend of mine who is an engineer in a related field to displays, etc... his advice for prolonging the life of the display was to turn the brightness down as low as possible when not in use and avoid turning powering the display on/off more than twice a day... The Cinema displays are rated at 50000 hours at half brightness; at 10 hours of use each day that is over 13 years of use. If you knock off 20% life by cranking up the brightness to 3/4 you're still within the 8-11 year life expectancy of the bulbs (@40000 hrs mtbf).
    I don't use my display where I need to make the display more than half way up the brightness scale so i've quit worrying about brightness. I adjusted the computer and display sleep timer to 3 hours and to not let the drives sleep until the machine itself goes to sleep. I use the computer a lot so this 3 hour setting is only set in case I forget to turn it off before going to bed.
    But to your original question, you'll definitely fatigue the bulbs prematurely by cycling them on and off. My parents have a single 40W fluorescent bulb wired directly into the 120V circuit, it is on 24x7x365 and never turned off - my dad dates the bulbs and has replaced the bulbs only twice in 23 years. The Phillips bulb lasted 14 years, but the other only 9. In their kitchen they have a 4-bulb fixture and those same bulbs last only about 2-3 years.
    The power inverter that powers the fluorescent bulb in LCD displays is the weak link in the chain as they aren't made as durable as a ballast inverter for full size bulbs. Do a search on the net and you'll find numerous pages about technicians finding the inverter in laptops, etc. failing long before the fluorescent bulbs.
    ... so i'm not going to worry about it getting dim but only concern myself with not powering it on and off more than once or twice a day.

    Looking to buy a MacBook for my wife to replace her old Dell D-420. The Dell still works fine but takes forever to boot and to wake from hibernation. I was given an old iBook a few weeks ago and was amazed at how fast it woke from sleep mode (the boot times were pretty snappy too). So my question is. What is the "normal" wake from sleep time on a MacBook? How long does a cold boot take?

    lancia is right- 56 second sound about right, my 2.0 GHz MacBook boots in about 49 seconds.
    If you want your MacBook to boot up faster, you can reset the PRAM (parameter random access memory). What this does is that it resets all the devices it searches for when it starts up: forgets about them, literally
    To do this, press down the command (the buttons next to the space bar) , option, P, and R keys at the same time when you turn on your MacBook. Press these keys until you hear the tone a second time. Make sure to do it quick, because after you hear the tone it won't work.

  • Where did the 'Sleep Timer' setting go?

    I know this seems like a bit of a silly question, BUT:
    I frequently fall asleep listening to my iPod. I've had 3 other iPods (1st and 2nd gen) which had sleep timers built in as a function on the menu. I could hook the ipod up to speakers in my bedroom, set the sleep timer, and drift off to music or books. With my new 5th gen iPod, however, I cannot find a sleep timer function anywhere. I purchased an iHome, so I can use the sleep timer function at home, but when I travel I either cannot use the iPod in this way, or have to leave the iPod running (and playing) all night long, which then actually wakes me up from sleep later in the night. Can anyone tell me if there is a sleep timer function on the 5th gen iPods, and if so, how do I activate it?

    Okay, DUH, I answered my own question. It was under the 'clock' function; I never bothered to set the clock as I was used to having the battery drain problem that occurred when the clock was set on the 1st and 2nd generation iPods. Now I know!

  • MacBook pro Extremely long booting time After 10.10.1 + strange icons when booting

    since the Yosemite update and the sequential patch, I've been experiencing lots and lots of issues with this releade
    I posses a
    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012)
    2,5 GHz Intel Core i5
    After a week after the Yosemite update my Mac just froze, and for a couple of days I was unable to access it. after 4 attempts of Clean install i was finally able to restore it. but the issue with long booting time and free after sleep/wake action are the same .
    I'm experiencing strange icons during boot as follows:
    Only after a second reboot and clearing ram with Cmd+Alt+P+R i'm able to get rid of this , and the reboot shows this
    That after 5 mins changes into this
    This routine keeps happening, every single time i have to restart my mac.
    Any suggestions?

    Well , i guess i a HDD issue, when i was experiencing the initial issues with yosemite , I've installed the system an external Hdd and everything was working fine.
    So i guess my suspicions were correct. I have to change my hdd.

  • Sleep Timer Reset (Zen Mic

    I was wondering, wouldn't it be nice if the sleep timer would reset every time the player is turned off by it. I use the timer when I'm going to sleep and I don't want the player to be playing all night long. After 5 minutes, the timer does its job and the player turns off. But then again, next morning, I'm listening music again and the sleep timer is still on, so after 5 minutes I have to turn the player on manually again.
    My suggestion is a reset after use, so when the sleep timer sets in, the sleep timer sets itself to off, and problem solved.
    Would this be something to think about for the next firmware?

  • Problems switching users and recovering from long sleep sessions

    I upgraded my 2008 MacBook Pro to Mavericks and am now having issues with switching users and recovering from sleep. I can sometimes go to the login window but the system hangs when switching from one user to another. It often hangs after long sleep sessions.
    Often I am finding that switching off and back on i sth easiest solution but I am getting a bit sick of it. Anyone have any suggestions?

    I usually leave my Pismo on and allow it to sleep. I find that waking from sleep and general functioning of the computer works a lot better if from time to time (I do it at least weekly) I shut down the computer, start up in Safe Mode, log in, empty Trash and reboot normally. The emptying Trash part clears the font caches.
    You should consider doing other maintenance procedures, if you don't already. Gulliver's Mac OS X System Maintenance has good ideas with linked resources.

  • One touch reset sleep timer and "off screen" podcasts app

    anyone know how to suggest the following to apple?
    In the podcasts app its such a pain to reset the sleep timer. If I awaken at night and I want to continue listening to my podcasts until I fall asleep there are five things I have to do:
    1) look at the screen
    2) select the sleep timer function
    3) try to find the selection which set the length of time I want to "time out" playback
    4 press done
    5) press play
    * additionally the screen remains on and does not turn off even if the iphone is flipped over.(proximity sensor should turn off the screen)
    There has only been one app that has supported "blind one touch restart" of the sleep timer (just find the phone and touch anywhere on the screen)  and also turn off the screen while iphone is turned onto its face (to save battery and keep room dark) and this app is no longer updated to work with the podcasts app.

  • Late 2012 iMac loses resolution after long sleep

    Hi guys, 1st time post that I hope someone can help me solve.
    After I wake my 27" iMac after a long sleep the text is blurred and when I look at display resolutions I only have two options (1024x768 & 800x600).
    A reboot does not always solve it, a NVRAM reset works sometimes and a Safe Boot always works. During NVRAM reset the 1st screen is the normal grey but after the second chime the screen can be snowy.
    Currently I have computer sleeps set to never and with the display set to sleep after 20mins, and I have not had a problem yet.
    I have reinstalled mavericks (not a clean install), removed memory, disconnected all usb devices and reset SMC but still have same problem.
    Anybody got any ideas?

    Text is blurred ..  Safe Boot always works.
    Might be a font causing this since Safe Mode disables all third party fonts.
    Open FontBook in your Applications folder.
    From the FontBook menu bar click File > Restore Standard Fonts
    Restart your Mac to test.

  • Adjust guided access sleep time

    When using Guided Access for a given app i timed 10 minutes between the last touch and the display turning off. Is there any way to adjust this time? I would like to change it to 1 or 2 minutes.
    To be clear i want the ipads display to turn off by itself meaning i DONT want to have to use the hard button built into the side bezel to turn the display off.

    Settings/general/autolock is set to 2 minutes. At the 2 minute mark the panel dims to about 25% but does not go off until 8 minutes later (the full 10 minutes i mentioned in my original post).
    I tried setting auto lock to never just to see if this was some weird bug that was causing the panel to stay on for ten minutes BECAUSE i had autolock enabled. Setting to never actually caused the panel to stay on forever and something crashed because triple click no longer worked until i hard/shutdown the iPad. I actually had to hard/shutdown it twice because the first time i forget to enable autolock again.
    So it looks like autolock is just dimming at 2 minutes instead of shutting the panel off. I think something is missing with guided access that would allow you to set auto lock to Never (because you don't want it to autolock) and then adjust sleep time within guided access. Or autolock should control when the panel dims and the 10 minute delay before sleep should be removed.
