Long start up after I Login
Hi
Macbook Air 11 takes along time to get to the desktop after I enter my password 2-3 minutes. this is the same even if i creat a new user..
This happened about 5 months ago and an Apple repair shop reinstalled Lion over my current setup and all was fine.
any ideas.

Hi, I've just returned to Arch after a long break and decided to give it a proper go to get a better understanding of how the Unix OS and Linux Kernel works. (I gave up with Arch a year ago because I spent too much time trying to find solutions to problems and never actually fixing anything)
I found this article for configuring the bash shell to automatically Start X after a successful login.
I have two questions relating to this:
Is it possible to do something similar but to go straight to a desktop? (Be it GNOME/KDE/XFCE or whatever)... ie: I'd like to use tty1 terminal to input my credentials and bypass a Display Manager completely and go straight to Desktop.
Instead of using a .bash_profile inside each users home directory, can it be made global for all users?

EDIT: I also noticed that for some crazy reason, installing the "kde" group using "pacman -S kde" removed "startx" completely despite "xorg-server-utils" being installed? Could somebody please explain why?

Aha! The startx program was working before I did "pacman -S kde" as I previously installed xorg-server and must have installed xorg-xinit before. However I don't remember removing any xorg packages so I'm still not sure how startx got removed. Either way, installing xorg-xinit has brought it back. Thank you!

Running startx works now however I just need to learn how to configure xorg properly, right now it just starts and instantly exits with code 0 (successful). I'll try and figure out to get to a KDE desktop after starting X.

Acrobat Pro X no longer starts -- even after trying re-installing
OK. Opened a *.pdf file. Saw the file open a for a little bit, then the program closed by itself. Tried to re-start and it wouldn't. Re-boot the computer, no. tried to access it different ways. Nothing, not even a error message or any kind. Downloaded the program installation file, and repaired the installation. Still didn't work. When back to the CS6 installation files and tried re-installing. Still it won't start. Other CS6 programs (Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.), all still work. what's going on and how can I get it working again? OS is Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.
Thanks.Here is what I believe to be the problem. It is not that Acrobat is broken, it is that you cannot get it out of trial mode. Even though you have a valid license for a suite of apps such as CS6 Design and Web Premium, and have activated the suite, after 30 days Acrobat stops launching because the 30 day trial has expired. You do not have to reinstall Acrobat if this happens. If you go into another app such as Photoshop and "Deactivate" the program, once you re-launch and re-activate Photoshop, Acrobat will start working again. Unfortunately this still is not removing Acrobat from Trial mode and 30 days later it will stop launching again. You then have to repeat the deactivate - reactive process of Photoshop to fix the problem yet again for another 30 days fo use. Very frustrating.

MacBook pro no longer starts after a month of kernel panics. What to do?
After about a month of kernel panics, my Mac crashed one more time and will no longer start. It sits at a black screen and just beeps, sometimes once, three times or more. I've been waiting for a friend to bring me an osx startup disk so I can fix it from the disk utility, but in the meantime I've been avoiding suspect programs as well as starting the computer holding command + s and typing /sbin/fcsk fy as many people have told me, and each time it said my hard drive was all right. My friend is coming back this week with the disk, but I am afraid it will be impossible even to boot from that. Does anyone have any suggestions? I don't have apple care or a warranty so going to the nearest apple store (one hour away) or the nearest servicer (a few minutes away) doesn't seem good. What should I do? I'm also slightly worried because I installed a firmware update not long before the panics started, to get around the region limitations of the DVD drive. I'm hoping this didn't cause any problems, since these panics seem to be related to RAM but the timing is just too convenient. Could this be a factor?
Thanks again BDAqua, and sorry for the long delay between reponses. The computer's been out of sight and out of mind for me the past few weeks, but my wife reminded meabiut it this morning.
So I tried the repair disk function within disk utility on the install disc, and everything seemed to be ok. I got a message in green that says "the volume Jeffs OW Mac appears to be ok." And then "Volume repair complete." I also noticed that the capicity of the drive appeared to be 119.69 GB and the available space 119.61 GB, which I guess meant the drive was completely empty but working.
So I tried once again to restore from my time machine backup, and wonder of all wonders, it worked this time! Two hours of restoration later, I'm writing to you now from the restored computer, and my wife is thrilled (and thinks I'm a genius!). So thank you thank you thank you for taking the time to walk me through the steps! I really appreciate it!
But now we're afraid to try again to upgrade to Snow Leopard. Do you think there's any reason trying again would throw the computer into another state of confusion, flux, and ultimately disaster, or should I just give it a shot? It's a 2009 Macbook Pro 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, with 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, running OS X 10.5.8. Perhaps it just can't handle the new software?

LXDE Does Not Start After GDM Login
Hope someone can advise...
Have installed Arch and overall running OK...but having problem getting LXDE to start up after logging in with GDM.
Have followed instructions on this from the GDM and LXDE wiki pages...
After logging in with GDM (and see that LXDE is selected...), all I get is a dark gray screen with an arrow cursor on it....
Have to do ctrl+alt+f2 to get back to console and log back in and then do 'startx' to get LXDE running.

how long does it take for the credit on the iphone 5 itunes to start declining after a purchase? I used a $15 gift card, it was redeemed, and it showed up in my itunes account on my phone but after buying songs, the credit did not decline from 15, even after I restarted itunes on my phone.
Nt sure on O2, but that seems to be a long time, you need to call your carrier and make sure they dont need to activate it. I believe they do.

Start systemd --user once after first login, not per session?

So I've been toying around with using systemd to manage user daemons and some oneshot processes, it seems like it could be really nice
Here's what I'm thinking I would like to do:
I would have two user targets, `console.target` and `graphical.target`.
The console target will start things like pulseaudio, ssh-agent (envoy), transmission, stuff like that.
The graphical target will start xorg and then other things like the WM, set the wallpaper.. you get the idea. Obviously the graphical target will want the console target.
Now, the part I wanted to get some feedback on is this: I would like a systemd --user instance to only be started once after my first login, not once per session.
So for example, I login from vt1 and it brings systemd --user up to the graphical.target. Then if I later SSH in from somewhere, it won't start a new systemd --user session (Ie, won't start pulse-audio, transmission-daemon, etc).
However, if I haven't logged into my machine yet and I SSH in, it will start up systemd --user and will start the console.target. If I then later login via vt1 it will see that there's already a systemd --user session started and start the graphical.target

Ipod won't start up after a long time being off
Hey guys
well, I have a wierd problem, here it goes my ipod(5th gen video 30 gb) well not start up after it's been off for let's say a day. I know it must have a full charge and it does. The keys do not respond, I usally have to plug it in or sometimes get lucky and by unplugging the headphones and it starts up. Also I am wondering if it's because I have put the hold button on for that long period of time, and yes i do take it off of hold before i start it up.
peace outum ive never heard of a problem like this but does it stay on after you plug it in? and although u probably know u hold the play button down to turn it on.

If you have an iBook G4, (PPC) you can't do much.
But if that is a MacBook (intel) you may be able to
upgrade the OS X, if the hardware is up to it...
Since there were about nine different build models
of MacBook (not powerpc iBook) to identify what
one you have would be the first step to knowing
what OS X and RAM upgrades it could use.
If the computer is not already at OS X 10.6.8,
it can't go online to get or use OS X 10.7.5. So,
when you more accurately describe the 'Book,
detailed information is available.
When you find the serial number, there is a web
page that can be used to identify by serial no.

That'd be a first step. Or even the Model number
which should be visible on the outer case by hinge.

After running Migration Assistant, Dashboard no long starts
I installed OS X 10.5 retail, iLife 08, and updated them on a MacBook(2007). Dashboard worked fine, then I migrated my user accounts from a 10.4.11 Macbook, Dashboard no longer starts in any account.
Anyone else see this happen?Yeah, I thought about that being easier. And with as much time as I've spent on this, it was appealing. Anyway...the erase and install did not make a difference, still no working Dashboard. I guess I could try an archive and install, but I think I'll be wasting even more time.
I'm assuming that whatever is coming over in my Apps is the culprit. This is my master computer image to be cloned for labs in a Middle School, so losing Dashboard in this environment is not the end of the world, but this just should not happen in principle. -
Java Web Start aborts after upgrading to 10.4.4
After the upgrade to 10.4.4 Java Web Start (and any clients) aborts as soon as I try to launch them.
I have two clients (CGoban2 and Pokerpages Poker Client) I think uses Java Web Start and they worked fine under Mac OS X 10.4.3.
Even if I try to start Java Web Start directly - it aborts immediatly.
I have not had any other problems with the Mac OS X upgrade. And webpages using Java works fine.
Below is a log (long!!!!) from the crash if anyone knows how to interpret it.

But I don't know why. This i what happened.
Today my powerbook freezed and a pane/window saying
"You must restart your computer......" in four different languages.
I did so a couple of times but it always frooze and showed the same message just after the login window appered.
Someone told me that it was a "kernel panic" and that I should remove any attached devices and remove battery and power cord for some seconds.
And then it was possible to login in the system seems fine again. Then I accidently started one of my Java Web start clients and it worked. And I started the next - also OK.
So I don't know what has happened but everythings seems ok now. -
Not starting up after installation of Security Update 2008-002
Hi there,
After successfully downloading and installing the Sec. Upd 2008-002 and proceeding to a 'restart' as required, my mac no longer starts up. I get the chime but the 'wheel'keeps spinning without further action.
Any help on this ?

Welcome to the Apple boards:
Can you boot into the Safe mode? Hold down the shift key when booting.
If so, do not login but at the login screen, click restart. You may have to use the backarrow to get to the restart button.
Let the machine reboot normally.
Usually this will fix a stuck update, but there are no guarantees.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Shut down from safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
Unable to start xorg after latest nvidia update
Hi,
I have NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 card. I did update to version 346.47 of nvidia driver and figured out that after reboot SDDM dont start. I disabled login manager and tried to start xorg server manually but without success. I see that there is segmentation fault in log but don't understand where it comes from exectly.

In addition, in order to disable sddm I downloaded latest Arch linux installation CD (2015.02.01) but I was unable to start PC with this version. Loading stuck after first 3 lines, after "triggering udevevents".
I had old version 2014.08 and it worked ok.
