Long term battery life

Any idea how many cycles the battery can take before being replaced... anti-iPhone types are telling me only 400... anyone know for sure?

I believe that is true. But it's not counted as how many times you hook it up to charge. It's 400 full deplete and recharge cycles.
So, if you charge it when it's halfway down (as an example), that only counts as 1/4 of a charge cycle.
I think if you don't overheat the iPhone by leaving it in a hot car or something, it should last at least until you are ready to upgrade to a newer iPhone (like 2 years or more). I'm well into 2 years with my iPod Video with no signs of the battery going bad.

  • Best long term battery life  Should I leave plugged in when I can?"

    Hi
If I want to get the best life out of my battery, it would seem to me to get the lowest number of full "load cycles", that I would leave plugged in as much as possible.
    Is this logic corrrect?
    thanks

Charging to max capacity reduces battery service life. Getting close to max (but never waiting till the plug symbol shows up) will extend your service life.
So if you charge it this way (charge close to, but not full capacity--i.e., plug symbol does not appear)...won't this mean the iPhone's "Usage" meter would never display any figures since IIRC once the iPhone 3G detects that it's receiving power from an external power source (e.g., charger), it resets the Usage stats...at which point the Usage meter will then not display any usage info until/unless the phone is fully charged?
IOW--if you don't charge the iPhone to full capacity, you'd never be able to see how long it's been in use and/or in standby since the Usage meter will start to tick only from a full-charge condition (it even says "Time since last full charge" at the top of the Usage screen).

  • Long term Battery preservation...

A genius at Apple retail told me this tip for longterm battery life:
don't leave the computer plugged in while it sleeps. It's cool to let the HD spin down and let the screen sleep, but down let the system sleep without pulling the AC.
He also said that when it comes thime t do a weekly calibration, that letting it dry up all the way is sort of a wives tale... In fact, its better he says to let it go down almost to 0 and similarly not to let it get to full capacity on the recharge (this is achieved automatically whenthe AC is in and the system is still awake. Basically the system tricks the battery into not charging all the way which for some reason save it in the long term.
Does any of that make sense, and if so are there any other means by which one can keep the battery lving and lasting longer (short term and long term suggestion welcome, many thanks in advance.

It seems geniuses ain't what they used to be...
    1) You can choose to have the disks spun down when attached to external power.
    2) I'll take the word of the engineers who designed the device and chose its components over that of an hourly guy in a retail store any day. By that I mean I'll follow Apple's published instructions on maintenance. It's not that they might not discover a better way, but I just consider them a lot more authoritative.
The whole power and battery area seems rife with folklore. Folklore and computers don't mix!.
Take your advice from the horse's mouth. Follow Apple's instructions and recommendations. They publish a great deal of information on-line. I have to believe it's generally well vetted by their engineering staff.

  • Long Term Battery Storage

Hi! Last week at my local Apple Genius Bar, I was advised to long term store my unused PowerBook battery at a 50% charge (okay, standard advice I know)....the rest of the advice was "stored in the freezer and it didn't need to be protected in storage bag". Has anyone tried this? Does freezing offer more protection than just sitting in a drawer with a 50% charge? I want to prolong my battery as long as possible so all help is very much appreciated.
    15" PowerBook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Sounds like the tech was misinterpreting. According to this source, 40% charge in a refrigerator is good for long-term storage, but freezing is FORBIDDEN.
So 40%-50% charge, cold but NOT frozen.

  • How long of battery life can you actually get on your U410/U300?

    Hi --
I got my U410 Ultrabook today and thus far have been extremely happy.  The internet isn't spotty, the touchpad and keyboard work great, and it looks beautiful.  The only concern I have is the battery life.  Lenovo advertises 8 hours but I expected five or six realistcally.
I started mine up right off the bat and it was at around 80%.  I did some hardcore downloading and was using it constantly and it died in maybe 2.5 hours (to be generous).  I'm charging it right now and am hoping to get a better result off a full battery.
What's everyone else's actual batery life experience?  What are you usually averaging from a full battery?  I figure if I turn down the brightness a lot and don't download a lot I can probably max out the performance.
Honestly I'd be happy with five hours on a full charge.

    milwaukeephil wrote:
I was the one who reported 5.5 hours of battery.
On the first day, when the battery was dying pretty quickly, I went into Resource Monitor (quickest way to get there is to start Task Manager, go to the Performance tab, and click Resource Monitor at the bottom of that window.)
You can sort that list by the CPU column.
Anyway, I saw Quick Update eating up a large amount of CPU time.... like 25% or more. Quick Update is bloatware, designed to update email and social media in the background. Do people still even use local email clients??? ;-)
After uninstalling Lenovo Quick Update my CPU usage dropped dramatically and battery life went up 2x.
Thanks, battery life has definitely improved after a week now and with brightness settings adjusted and uninstalling Quick Update it's even better.

  • 30GB Ipod no longer has battery life

My old iPod (30GB) no longer holds a battery charge.  It drains to nothing in about 20 minutes.  It works fine when docked in a charger or in a sounddock the provides juice, but not so well during a longer workout.
    Any suggestions?

The Apple Store Genius Bar may still replace batteries for that model.
For a lower cost, or you could do it yourself, by buying a replacement battery for your iPod on eBay or other online source.  Be sure to get one that comes with a pair of the nylon pry tools.  NOTE:  Some iPod models are difficult to open, if you've never done it before.
Then, use online instructions, such as
    http://www.ifixit.com/Device/iPod_Original
to do the replacement.  There are probably YouTube "how to" videos as well.
Since it is fully functional except for a mostly dead battery, it might get you a reasonable amount for it on eBay.

  • HT3053 Can I run my MacBook Pro Late 2008 without battery forever? Is it bad in long term or anything? Does it make the system less stable?

Can I run my MacBook Pro Late 2008 without battery forever? Is it bad in long term or anything? Does it make the system less stable?
My battery got swollen (and I unfortunately noticed it very late and might have be running with it for months, which potentially explains all the crashes everyday and the trackpad not working anymore, the Apple test also says I have a bar of ram broken...) and I had to remove it because the back pannel did not close anymore... Can I still use my MBP normally forever that way? I was planning on buying a new mac anyway but maybe waiting for the next iMac upgrade in the year... Should I wait?

Other than the system shutting down instantly if you have a power outage, whcih could corrupt the OS. Nothing else bad will happen.

  • My Ipod touch battery life depreciating, and it seems to coincide with my earphones no longer registering

    Hello,
I have had a few iPod's over the last couple of years, and well I am starting to get bored of exchanging/purchasing a new one because of what seems like a reoccuring problem. My iPod's battery is dying... it no longer lasts a day even without use (I have taken off extra apps-I just have what came with my iPod on my phone, my bluetooth is disabled). This has happened to me before, I had reset my iPod. Reuploaded it from my back up as well as return it to manufaturers defaults and sync'd it as a brand new iPod and this has not helped. (Initially I thought maybe I had a corrupted file on there).
I had taken my iPod into the Genius Bar, told me to do the manufaturers reset, even had an ipod exchanged. I was told that doing mini charges would 'teach' the battery that it was empty before it truly was. So I stopped using a car charger, I now use my iPod and let it die before I charge it once again, or at least have it below the 20% battery life before I will plug it in. And yet the problem still persists. I know I have time to take it in and have it looked over, but I'm tired of the same issue.
This issue seems to come along with an issue with my earphones. I use the Skullcandy 50/50 ear buds that have been working on my iPod for months now. And yesterday I had been listening to my iPod in the car using the AUX port, have my iPod volume all the way up and my speakers down. Typically when I take out the AUX port cord and replace them with my earphones the iPod would change the volume level to what I was listening to last with earphones. But now it isn't doing that, and the controls for the pause, volume, skip/rewind no longer work.
The Apple staff have been very kind to me, but as a customer I am getting tired of having to deal with this. I am just at my wits ends as this would be my 3rd iPod... so I think that it's me causing this but what could I possibly be doing to create this?

    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. If defective and not abused Apple will experience it with a refurbished one since it should be within the one-year warranty.

Is Iphone5 really weak in terms of battery life?

Review the topics in this forum and you can see for yourself what problems people are coming here with. Keep in mind that judging a phone by the posts in a support forum gives you a very skewed view. Most people who bought the iPhone 5 are not having problems with it and they are not dropping into the forums to say "Hi, guys! Phone works great!" The people who aren't having battery issues aren't posting here. Keep that in mind as you read through the forums.

  • Why does the Battery life of my iPhone 4 doesn't last as long as it used to before updating my software to iOS 6? Can this problem be fixed?

    Hey there,

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Can MacBook battery life be as longer as MacBookPro

    Hello
I had watched the new add about MacBookPro' s battery life and thought if I could use my MacBook up to 8 hours and if I could charge my MacBook up to 1000 times, which is also extremely a big number for charging cycles, it would be really great for my education. During some long meetings or presentations (like Apple Keynotes) I need some charging equipment and sometimes the electrical sysytem of the meeting rooms don't let me to recharge my MacBooks battery. So my question is "Can a kind of powerfull battery, like MacBookPro's, seperately sold for also other Apple remote products?"

Nope not available for anything except the 17" MBP.
If you want to maximize your battery life turn off bluetooth, IR in the security prefs unless you are using a remote device, wifi, and turn down your brightness a bit. Also make sure you are calibrating your battery to keep it in shape every 2-3 months. by charging to full and letting it charge for two more hours, letting it drain all the way, and then letting it sit discharged for at least 5 hours. Last, charge it fully.
