Long time computer user looking into server techs for the first time

Hello there,
I was hoping to get some guidance on if we should upgrade to a server or not. We run a small three person business from our home doing audio and video work. Our main goal is to keep things organized and digital organization is not our strong suit as artists.
So, we would need large shared space for media and project files (gigabit ethernet is fine) as well as a large shared Time Machine for our three workstation's system drives. Also, the idea of a shared ical and shared contacts would be really helpful. None of this needs to be open to the public over the internet (security from the internet is greatly preferred), all just needs to be accessed via ethernet and local wifi via AirPort (iPhones for shared contacts and ical).
The only thing stopping us is the idea that a lot of this can be done without the $500 server software and the headaches of setting up something completely new to us. I have tried asking some Apple store reps for advice but have yet to find anyone there that can give me a for sure answer, which is why I am here to get some professional opinions. So the question, do we need to go the server route to have all these features even though none of it will go though the internet?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks all!

do we need to go the server route to have all these features even though none of it will go though the internet?
"need"? no, but you might prefer to do so.
Let me explain.
First off, there's nothing in Mac OS X Server, per se, that says it's designed for internet-facing applications. Sure, some of the services are internet-leaning, but don't think that internet/non-internet is the deciding factor of whether to use Server over client.
The fact is that much of what you describe can be done via Mac OS X Client, but it can be done much easier with Mac OS X Server. You might find that the hours you save, and the productivity you gain far outweighs the cost of Mac OS X Server.
Case in point, you have three workstations, right? Is each one used by an individual? or are they shared?
If they're shared, would it be easier for any user to be able to log on at any workstation and get their normal desktop environment, preferences, etc? That's something that's easy to do with Mac OS X Server, but not via Mac OS X Client.
You've already touched on shared iCal and contacts, neither of which are part of Mac OS X client, so you'll have to decide how much they're worth to you.
At the end of the day, you'll have to decide for yourself. Of course, you could take the easy option and defer until Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) comes later in the summer, in which case the server functions are included as optional installs for no additional cost (i.e. buy client and get the Server for free).

Most iPad come wit a 60-70% charge. You can use it immediately and then charge at your convenience.
    FYI
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery

At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • HT4859 How long should it take to back up iphone for the first time with about 6 gigs?

How long should it take to back up iphone for the first time with about 6 gigs?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
The first back up to iCloud may take some considerable time. Just how long isn't really possible to say without knowing how much is in your back up and your connection speed.
What many people don't realise is that upload speeds are often significantly less than download speeds, so for example a user may have a download speed of 40 Mbps, but only 1 Mbps for uploading. As a rough guide it will take around 2 ¼ hours to upload 1 GB of data at 1 Mbps.

For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, it’s important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally. Be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).

  • Is there any way to disable "Checking Your Add-ons" window that comes when user starts Firefox after update for the first time?

we have over 1500 firefox users and its very confusing to them if after update they start their Firefox and this "Checking Your Add-ons" window comes.
It would be much appreciated if it can somehow skipped this or do it silently.

Unfortunately this link does not help.
We currently have 3.6.x versions of Firefox in most computers, and if i do a silent install via sccm to version 12, then if user starts the new firefox for the first time, it checks addons, like java quick starter and browsing protection (f-secure) etc. Second time when they start firefox, it starts normally.
My question is - is there some way to avoid this first run addon compability checking?
I've tried numerous preferences in mozilla.cfg, nothing helps so far.

  • Time Machine: Repeated errors when backing up for the first time using a new external firewire drive

My Iomega 500GB firewire external drive failed on me last week and I have just replaced it with an identical model. I used to use the old drive with Time Machine on my MacBook Pro running 10.5.8 with no issues, until the drive had a hardware failure and stopped spinning up, hence the replacement.
Two days ago I tried using Time Machine for the first time with the replacement external drive. The backup failed and each subsequent backup attempt has failed since then with a different error each time. The drive cannot be ejected using Finder (Finder says disk is in use and cannot be ejected even when no processes are running except for Finder and Time Machine has been disabled), by dragging it to the dock (hangs computer which can only be fixed by a hard reboot), in Disk Utilities (drive cannot be unmounted) or in Terminal ("no such file or directory").
The first backup attempt failed after 3 hours of "preparing" with the message "The backup was not performed because an error occured while creating backup directory".
I tried repairing the disk in Disk Utilities and Disk Utilities said the drive was OK ("the volume Time Machine Backups appears to be OK"). I tried ejecting the drive (hard reboot of computer and disconnecting the drive), plugging it back in again and trying again.
This time it started backing up, then failed after a few minutes with the message "an error occured while copying files to the backup volume". I had a look at the troubleshooting suggested on http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/C3.html and followed instructions. It failed again, so I did a full reset as per http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/A4.html.
It failed again, so I tried reparing the drive again in Disk Utilities and again it said it was OK. I tried using different cables and ports (Firewire 400 instead of Firewire 800), and backups still fail.
I have turned off anti-virus scanning (Sophos). I have tried excluding it from Spotlight but this causes an error message from Spotlight. I have tried trashing the com.apple.TimeMachine.plist file and rebooting. I have tried selecting deselecting the drive as the back up in Time Machine preferences, selecting "None", then "Stop Backing Up" then quitting preferences, rebooting, disconnecting the drive, reconnecting the drive and selecting the drive again as the backup disk in Time Machine preferences. I have tried erasing the drive completely, rebooting, and trying to back up again.
None of these have worked. This is a brand new drive and I do not want to have to replace it again if I do not have to.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you.

    Hello, some possible clues...
Should you click “Start New Backup”? Not yet! If you see the dialog above, your existing Time Machine backup is corrupt, and you might not be able to recover data from it. But you can save a copy of the corrupt bundle and, perhaps, extract some data from it if needed.
Ask yourself if Time Machine has saved data you might need before deciding what to do next:
If you are sure you won’t need anything backed up before today, click “Start New Backup” and let Time Machine do its thing.
Otherwise, click “Back Up Later” and save a copy before letting Time Machine start a new backup. Just look for a file called “computername.sparsebundle” (for network backups) or “Backups.backupdb” (for local ones) and create a copy with a different name. You can open sparsebundle files with DiskImageMounter and browse them like any other disk. More information is available here.
There you go. If you click “Start New Backup” when you see this dialog box, Time Machine will erase all of your old backup data and start a new bundle. It won’t be corrupt, but it will be empty.
Note that you can manually initiate a Time Machine backup integrity check by option-clicking the “Time Machine” icon in the menu bar and selecting “Verify Backups.”
    http://blog.fosketts.net/2010/08/11/time-machine-completed-verification-backups- improve-reliability-time-machine-create-backup/
According to This Time Machine resource   “This appears only on Snow Leopard, and started with the Time Capsule Backup Update 1.0 in mid-May of 2010.  It also seems to have been included in the 10.6.3 v1.1 update and 10.6.4.”
So, what can you do about it?  Grin and bear it, it seems, until Apple fixes it.
One thing you can do to make the backup take less time is to connect your machine to your Time Capsule or other backup drive via Ethernet for the duration of the initial backup.

  • Using the SQL Server Agent for the first time

I have set up several jobs to run automatically throughout the day. Each job just does one thing: executes an SSIS package.
The packages themselves run perfect when I test them in Visual Studio 2005, but when the SQL Server Agent tries to run the job I am getting failed jobs.
Is there any tutorials or walkthroughs that can teach my about using the SQL Server Agent? If I wanted extensive help troubleshooting my SQL Server Agent problems which part of the message boards would I post that too?

  • For who long do i have to charge my iphone for the first time

can some one help me with thsi

It doesn't matter. You can start using the phone right away as long as it has charge on it. Lithium ion batteries have no requirements to be charged completlely or drained completely. You can also leave the device on the charger even after it has reached full charge.

  • HT4859 how long does it take to backup your phone for the first time using icloud?

I have never used Icloud before and now my phone wants to be resotred so I am trying to back everything up using Icloud it just dosent seem to be moving and it just continues to say estimated time ...

    Hello there jspin11,
The amount of time that the iCloud backup will take depends on a few factors the 2 most important are the amount of data to be backed up, and the internet connection speed.
I found a great resource for troubleshooting iCloud backups named iCloud: Troubleshooting creating backups found here http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3992.
    General information
iCloud Backup requires a Wi-Fi connection to the Internet.
Automatic backups occur when you've plugged in your iOS device, locked the screen, and have connected it to Wi-Fi.
You can manually start a backup by tapping Back Up Now in Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup (requires a Wi-Fi connection to the Internet).
iCloud Backup will provide helpful information and status messages related to backups at the bottom ofSettings > iCloud > Storage & Backup.
If automatic backups don't work as expected, test to see what happens when you start a manual backup by tapping Back Up Now at the bottom of the Storage & Backup screen.
Backups and restores both take time, especially if you have a lot of data or a slow connection. Depending on the size of your data and the speed of your network, you may need to give more time than you expected to a backup or restore.
Make sure you have at least 50 MB of free space available on your iOS device before you back up. If you have no space available on your device, iCloud Backup can fail in some cases. You can verify how much free space you have available on your iOS device in Settings > General > About.
SettingsiCloud Backup settings are controlled on a per-device basis from Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup.
To view Storage & Backup settings:
Tap Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup.
    Tap Manage Storage.
Tap your device's name. From here you can:
View the size of your backups and see the storage used by each app.
Enable or disable Backup for each app.
    Delete Backups.
    Buy more storage.
If you're out of iCloud Storage space, you can apply several solutions:
Exclude Camera Roll and other large data from iCloud backups of your device by going to iCloud > Storage & Backup > Manage Storage and choosing your device.
Remove some of the larger files on your device, such as large audio or video files, from your Camera Roll in order make more space.
    Remove existing Backups.
    Purchase more storage.
For more information about managing and using the Storage & Backup settings, see this article.
If an issue persists and you are not able to resolve it using the methods discussed in this article, contact iCloud Support for additional assistance.
    All the best,
    Sterling

How long should I charge it before using? Anyone knows?

    Hi Virginia,
It's probably best to just let it charge to 100%, however, if you needed to use it before it got to 100%, it won't hurt anything to do so.

  • How long dose it take to chare a playbook for the first time?

I just got a new PlayBook 16GB Wifi and wondering how long dose it take to charge? I didnt turn it on yet so im wondering. Also how will i know when charging is finished? Thanks!

with the charger that came in the box it can take 10 hours depending how depleted the battery is. touch the battery icon and a drop down window will open that shows percentage of charge. use only the original charger or optional rapid charger. a little lightning bolt symbol across the battery indicates that it's charging.
