Long time iTunes beach-balling problem

This issue has been driving me insane for a good 3 years now and I cant seem to find an answer to this anywhere (not even by calling Apple Support).
Basically the problem is this; I have an early 2008 (8,1) iMac and ever since it's purchase, iTunes has constantly frozen on me with the spinning beach ball forcing me to manually powering down the iMac by holding the power button.
I've upgraded 2 operating systems since its original purchase: Leopard > Snow Leopard > Lion, with no luck.
I've upgraded to every single new release of iTunes when made available, still no luck.
I've low-level formatted and reinstalled Mac OS countless times, again...no luck. I cant seem to find out what the issue is.
I have approx 24,500 songs in iTunes, and I believe my iMac spec is fairly decent, Which is as follows:

nVidia GeForce 8800GS

By authorizing her computer it only allows her to play the tunes. It does not give her access to your account for purchases.
The tunes a attached to your account and there is no way that I have heard to transfer them to another person.

Macbook Pro Beach Ball Problems
I have a '08 MBP that has the spinning beach ball showing up in all the apps during use and everything runs slower.
Web pages take 5-10 seconds to load.
Lightroom photos take 5-10 seconds to load. Commands and mouse selections take 4-5 seconds to respond.
It slows down even more with an external monitor being used.
The fan runs high 85% of the time.
Hard drive was replaced with an SSD about 2 years ago, which helped calm HD noise.
The HD has 15.5 GB left right now, but the beach ball problem has been there even with half the HD full.
Problem has been going on for a couple of years, but I've managed around it.
This issue occurs even with only 1 app running. For instance, I'll shut all apps except one application, and it still drags, whether that one app be Safari or LR.
I realize the MBP is older, but it used to be very responsive with the same apps. Never used to see the beach ball during app usage, only at startup of app if anytime.
I believe the RAM is maxed out for what this machine can handle at 4GB, but again, the system didn't slow down before.
I believe the problem may be some processes running in the background that are dragging down everything, but not sure what to look for.
Any advice any fixes are greatly appreciated.

28 MB Page-outs1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.

5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

Hi everyone,
I have macbook pro mid 2012, i7 processor, 8GB of RAM, 750 Harddrive. It was running perfect, I partitioned the disk into two, and made one partition full with movies. Before it was OK, it start becoming slow so, I think it might be because of no disk space on one of the partition. I bought external harddrive and transfer all movies to that harddrive. It was still slow so I formatted the harddrive, made it one partition and install mavericks. It still shows the beach ball problem. I did hardware test, RAM test. All was fine. I tried to recover to mountain lion but the internet was slow so it could not be downloaded, also my wifi automatically disconnects after some minutes so l have to reconnect my wifi and start the download. Please guys help me, what is the problem with my mac?.......I followed to step two, it was slow. The same problem continued here also. No beachball in Safe mode, but yes there was beachball problem in safe mode too. The internet connection disconnects frequently.

I am a long time iTunes user but a new MacBook owner! I keep the majority of my music files on an external hard drive. I'm trying to view all those files on my MacBook through iTunes. With windows you would go to : File/Add To Library, and iTunes would add all your selected files to your music library BUT WOULD NOT COPY THEM TO YOUR HARD DRIVE. In other words, if the external hard drive was connected, you could listen, drag/drop, and edit the files. When I tried the same thing with my new MacBook... it actually started coping the files to my MacBook harddrive. I don't want that, it's millions and millions of mp3's that I don't want to keep on my computer, only my external hard drive. Can anyone help? I'm sure it's something easy, I'm just so new to the Mac world. Being an iPhone owner for many many years I'm picking up things fast, but this is getting the best of me! Help !

I am trying to do a full Time Machine Backup to a new external disk. The backup starts, and it says "Time remaining about 4 days." That seems like a very long time, but the real problem is that the computer "logs off" after a few hours, and the backup stops. The system preferences are set to "Never" for Computer sleep and Display sleep. The computer does not ordinarily log off automatically, but it has done this twice since I started the Time Machine backup.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the search box.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.

Authoritative, Real-time, Spinning Beach Ball Diagnostic Tool/Utility?

Is there an effective, real-time diagnostic tool/utility that authoritatively explains why my Mac is so-darn-slow...soooo mmaaannnnyyyyy times during the day?
The spinning beach ball is ubiquitous on my machine.
For example:
Sometimes--but not always--it can take Evernote, MS-PowerPoint, MS-Word, MS-Excel, and the like, as long as 3-5 minutes to become active.
Another example: Viewing "Open Recent" in just about any application can take 2-4 minutes.
Sometimes, again, not always: it can take 2-3 minutes for a browser tab to open.
To date, I have purchased, and run, virtually all the major "Keeper," "Cleaner," "Go Faster," "Tools" utilities (each promising to speed up a Mac)...but none of them either report a meaningful problem (however, some of the do report many, many trivial problems)--and none of them have had any effect whatsoever on system performance.
Also, I constantly check "Monitor" (which routinely reports CPU at ~3-7%) and iStat Mini (which routinely reports CPU at ~5%). Additionally, many, many times, I've examined the console.logs looking (without success) for anomalous events.
Hence this request. Is there a useful tool/utility/magic incantation which can help diagnosis this productivity-sapping issue and explain--in real-time--the cause of a spinning beach ball?
Conjecture: Given the consistently low reported CPU utilization...16Gb memory (1333 MHz DDR3)...1Tb SATA disk...2.8 GHz Intel Core 5 (1 processor, 4 cores)...in this somewhat beefy Mid-2010 27-inch--could the dominant constraint be the internal bus? If the bus is relatively slow...would that explain the too, too frequent beach ball?

InDesign CS5 beach ball problem
Hi - I haven't used my ID CS5 for years, but now when I want to it launches into the beach ball. I am on a MAC and it ID opens okay, but when I ask it to create a new document it launches the beach ball. I was trying to open an old document with broken links, and I think I deleted that document, but it hasn't helped. I did the trouble shooting of using cntrol, cmd, shift and option on the launch of ID and I was able to reset preferences, but still have the problem.
Other troubleshooting I have tried. I moved the Mark II file to the desktop and back and the plugins and the Recovery data file. But it is still happening. Maybe my novice troubleshooting has made matters worse. Any suggestions?Hi Bob - Yes, I updated the OS in the last four years. I'm hoping there

ITunes beach balls when I buy a movie
I'm running OS X 10.6.8 with iTunes 10.6.1(7). When I click on "Buy HD Movie" (Blade Runner Final Cut) with 1080p or 720p enabled, iTunes simply beach balls. I've given it about 20 minutes and it continues to beach ball.
So I force close iTunes, reload it, try it again, same thing. I've rebooted, and I've done software update. Everything is current according to software update.

I keep getting software update alert, but when I go to update, I am asked to log into a hotmail account which does not belong to me, and which I obviously do not have a password to. Fortunately i was able to find a solution from a thread where someone asked the same question. I did what they Said, which was something to dó with spotlight, and Bingo it Worlked. -
I've recently switched routers on my iMac. The set-up seemed to go well, and the incoming mail works. The outgoing mail is the issue - it sits in the outbox buffering and doesn't send. After several calls to my service provider they decided the issue was on the "Apple side" since my internet connection seemed to be working fine, and all input information was correct - ports selected, etc. Any ideas what to try next?
Open Keychain in Utilites and delete all the "outgoing" entries (will probably be smtp.<your ISP name>.net). Then go into Mail Preferences>Accounts, clear out any passwords for the outgoing. Can't say exactly where this is or what this looks like in 10.7, since I'm running 10.6. Then enter new (EDIT: or can be the same old ones) passwords, or password. Allow Keychain to save those new ones.

I just upgraded to iTunes 10.5 through Software Update. When I plug in my iPhone 4, iTunes beach balls until literally the instant the phone gets unplugged - then it's instantly responsive.
I do for a split second then see the top status bar update to "Updating Files on iPhone" with a small bit filled up. This happens no matter how long I leave it beach balling.
Is anyone else seeing this?I did end up with a solution that was a bit complicated, but worked.
I used an application called AppZapper to completely delete iTunes off my computer. I then reinstalled with the DMG downloaded directly from apple.com.
It did force me to restore my phone from a previous backup, so I lost about two weeks of data.
Then I was able to download and install iOS 5. -
Eternal beach ball after 10.8.5 Combo Update
Just installed the 10.8.5 combo update on my mac mini (2013, i7).
Everything was, of course, working perfectly with 10.8.4
Now I get the eternal spinning beach ball just before the login.
I've already verified the boot hard drive, repaired permissions, cleared the chaches, reset pram, reset smc, etc.
Pretty much everything I can do just shy of a clean reinstall (which would've taken less time).
Boots fine in sigle user and safe mode.
Only workaround has been to remove the physical ethernet connection (using wireless) and ensure the two usb bus powered devices -- a canon lide scanner, and an Asus USB DVD burner -- are disconnected prior to booting the computer. Symptoms that are widespread and linked directly to the .5 update and are not addressed in the supplementals.
Any other possible solutions or perhaps someone knows if apple is still working on the issue?
Unplugging USB devices is merely a hassle, but not one i'm going to live with. I will take the time to reinstall and stop with the 10.8.4 update if I have to. I'd rather not, but since there was nothing wrong with the system or hardware I have no problem with stopping there. the .5 update didn't include anything i needed.
Don't waste your time posting if you are going to advise me that it's something other than the update that borked things. It's the update and I've already confirmed it. It's not my software as i run nothing aside from MS Office and Adobe CS6 beyond what apple preinstalled. Unless you can specifically point to a conflict with the files in the update and either of those two packages, keep your opinions out of this discussion. If you can, i welcome the data.
Thank you.I also encountered this "spinning beach ball of death right when I'm supposed to see the login screen" issue. It happened to three of the laptops I manage (two MacBook Pro 13" retina, and one MacBook Pro 15" retina; all late 2012 models). The "spinning beach ball of death" symptoms started manifesting themselves right after I performed "software update" on them.
The symptoms: I get the spinning beach ball (or sometimes just stuck with a grey screen) when waking from sleep, when switching users, right after a reboot, right after a cold boot, just as I was trying to get back to work after the screen saver kicked in ... it doesn't happen 100% of the time, but I'd say about 3/4 of the times I expect to see a login screen, I got the spinning beach ball of death (or the grey screen of death).
This is what I think solved the problem: Rebuilding the Spotlight Search Index.

Be sure to disable screen saver, set "computer sleep" and "display sleep" timers to infinity before the start the rebuilt process (explanation below).
I also did other things like resetting PRAM, repairing disk permissions, rebuilding the directories with DiskWarrior, etc. But the best I could tell, it's the rebuilding of the Spotlight Search Index that actually did it. I speculate that the system, while trying to show you the login screen, was also trying to fetch some images or info (the users' login profile pictures, the background wallpaper, whatever), but somehow couldn't find the data and got stuck because of some issue with the Spotlight Search Index. So once the Spotlight Search Index is rebuilt, the "spinning beach ball" problem went away.
So which software update component broke the system? As counter-intuitive as it may seem, I'm pointing my finger at the component Apple calls the "Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update" version 5.01. As I mentioned earlier, I observed this problem on three different laptops, and I updated them weeks apart on multiple occasions ... I've gone days and weeks on two of them after the 10.8.5 Supplemental Update without problem, I've gonve days on another laptop after the Safari 6.1, Remote Desktop Client 3.7.0, iTunes 11.1.3 updates without problem. The only constant that applies across all three laptops was that right after the "Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update" version 5.01 was applied, the "spinning beach ball of death" symptoms started manifesting themselves. That's why I'm pointing my finger at the "Digital Camera RAW Compatibility" version 5.01 update as the prime suspect. (Secondary suspects, if I have to name them, would be the Safari 6.1, Remote Desktop Client 3.7.0, iTunes 11.1.3 updates.)
On rebuilding the Spotlight Search Index ... this is a long process. It's will likely take hours (depends on how much data you have on your drive). You don't want the screen saver or the display sleep or the computer sleep timer to trigger and lead you right back to the spinning beach ball while you wait for the Spotlight Search Idex to rebuild. That's why the recommendation to disable screen saver and set the sleep timers to "infinity" before starting the index rebuild process. If you try monitor the rebuild process by eyeing at the "mds" and mdworker" CPU utilization ... don't get faked out by the occasional lulls when the system shows you that "mds" and "mdworker" CPU utilizations are zeros. "mds" and "mdworker" appear to take short breaks once in a while, and that starts up in earnest again eating up close to 100% of CPU cycles when they work. Rebuilding the Spotlight Search Index is supposed to take "hours," so best guest, I'd say wait at least one hour, then check if "mds" and "mdworker" CPU utilization figures stay consistently close to zero for a few minutes before calling it done. I do not know of any better way to tell if the system has finished rebuilding the Spotlight Search Index.
All the above are based on my experience rescueing a grand total of THREE computers back from their software update-induced "spinning beach ball of death" problem. So granted it is a very small sample base. My apologies in advance if it turns out the above does not solve the problem for you. (I'm just going to skip the "Digital Camera RAW Compatibility" version 5.01 update going forward as I have no desire to "recreate the problem" just to test my hypothesis.)

Solution to iPhoto spinning beach ball for Book projects with too many unplaced photos
A few days ago I discovered the solution to this problem for a client using iPhoto 9.5.1 in OS X Mavericks 10.9.4.

TRIED ALL KNOWN SUGGESTIONS BUT NONE HELPED
My client had already tried repairing, rebuilding etc. the iPhoto Library, and I tried OS X's Disk Verify and Repair Permissions plus emptied the cache folder in system Library and in the hidden user Library folder (option-key "Go" menu, Library). None of this helped.
CLUE TO PROBLEM
I noticed several of her iPhoto Book projects each had thousands of "unplaced" photos. In each of those cases, each Book project only had 10-50 "placed" photos used to order the book but thousands of "unplaced" photos. In a Book project, clicking on the bottom-right corner's "Photo" icon-button caused an extremely long lasting spinning beach ball making iPhoto unusable for long periods.
I discovered the problem by clicking once on an existing Book project's name in the left column of iPhoto, then letting go of the mouse with its arrow cursor hovering over the selected Book project name. Within 1-7 seconds, a little pop-up appears listing the total number of photos (placed + unplaced) in that Book project. For many Book projects, the total number was just several more photos than the number of "placed" photos, e.g., a Book with 25 photos showed "(37)" in the pop-up info by the hovering stationary mouse, meaning 37 total photos (placed + unplaced) are associated with that Book project.
BUT...
...some projects listed over 5,000 (five thousand) photos associated with a single Book project that had only placed 20-40 photos in the final printed book. One Book project had 6,070 and several other small book projects showed over 1,000 photos. In each Book project with a mass of unplaced photos, clicking the bottom-right "Photo" icon-button caused a very long-lasting spinning beach ball, almost certainly because iPhoto struggled to build a huge list of thumbnails for the mass of unplaced photos.
My client didn't understand how to efficiently add photos to a new Book project and was clicking on the pull-down menu in the right column that appears after clicking the Photo icon-button within the Book project. From the menu she chose "Last import..." or other menu choice that added a mass of "unplaced" photos to the Book project.
She didn't realize that after creating a new Book project, she could simply drag an individual photo or multi-selected group of photos or an event or "faces" group from its respective library section and drop it onto the Book project's name in the left column, thereby adding only a small group of "unplaced" photos.
USER SOLUTIONS
=====Delete mass of "unplaced photos" within a Book project
This works best for cleaning up smaller number of unplaced photos from completed Book projects.
Problems with solution:
- if the number of unplaced photos is huge, e.g., 6,070, the list of unplaced photos won't appear for a long, long time if ever.
- even if the list of unplaced photos finally appears, there's no way to select more than one thumbnail at a time, i.e., command-a for Select All doesn't work, nor do shift-clicks and command-clicks for multi-item selecting. You must click one photo then tap the "delete" key on your keyboard repeatedly and fast for this to be practical (note: delete key presses are cached here (meaning accumulated until it catches up processing them later); tapping the delete key like mad then waiting for iPhoto to catch up takes lots of patience.
====Delete an entire existing Book project containing a mass association of unplaced photos
This is practical if you've already printed your Book project and no longer need it. My client chose this method for Book projects with a mega mass of unplaced photos.
Problem with solution:
- for incomplete Book projects in progress with a mass of unplaced photos, you'd have to start over after deleting the whole thing.
NEED FOR IMPROVED IPHOTO FEATURE(S)
(1) The existing "Clear Placed Photos" button within a Book project might be useful, but it'd be even better to also have a button to "Clear Unplaced Photos,” and this button should be available outside of the section that struggles to display thumbnails of large numbers of unplaced photos. Clicking "Clear Unplaced Photos" would do the trick.
(2) An additional iPhoto behavior might help: iPhoto should warn with an option to cancel when adding a mass of photos to the "unplaced photo" section if the number of photos exceeds ??? (400??).
(3) Add another choice to iPhoto’s special startup Administrative window (Repair, Rebuild, etc.): "Remove unplaced photos from existing projects. (Doesn't destroy any photos in Library)"
Whew!Like I mentioned in the post, corruption was probably ruled out by running all the Admin features at iPhoto startup (e.g., Rebuild, etc.). I also stated in my post that I also ran a Disk Verify and Repaired Permissions in OSX (via Disk Utility). I also emptied system Library cache files as I stated in my post.
I was paid to figure out the solution and am not getting paid to troubleshoot for Apple. The more unplaced photos there are in a Book project, the longer it takes to build thumbnails. It's an old general problem in computing when building lists on the fly.
The delay happened for all Book projects with lots of unplaced photos (almost*** certainly more than Apple imagined a user would use), and the beach ball delay was proportional to the number unplaced photos, which super large numbers of photos.
I very much doubt photos are corrupt. But Apple will probably figure it out. It was EASILY reproducible. Try it with different number of unplaced photos known not be corrupt (they display fine elsewhere and iPhoto's and Disk Utlity's admin Verify, Repair etc features show no problems).
I'm done with this.
My client's iPhoto works well now and she knows how avoid placing exorbitant numbers of unplaced photos into her project. I'm not getting paid to answer all this, so good night.

Hi it's my first time posting here so please forgive me if any important information is missing.
My Imac have been running very slow and freeze from time to time, nonstop beach ball whenever I click on anything, just freeze for hours. I always have to turn it off manually and wait for another 30 mins for it to reboot.
I'm wondering if that's because of my memory? I'm thinking about reinstall , i have time machine back up but I really want just music and picture. Is there a way I can just restore these two ? Or do I need to upgrade any hardware?

Whilst deleting the Safari cache seemed to solve the problem in the first instance, it did not resolve my problem of a slow and unresponsive machine.
Then I stopped iTunes. Who stops iTunes??? I certainly hadn't looked at stopping it before, especially since I rely on it to pump an almost continuous feed of music throughout the house.
As soon as iTunes exited (and it took some time to respond and to close), my zippy iMac was back.
Repeatedly starting and stopping iTunes was, in my mind, now giving clear evidence to the problem. I tried installing the new iTunes 10.3.1 from a download (rather than software update) and this still did not solve the problem.
I made sure that any plugins were removed - still no joy.
I did a complete uninstall of iTunes (tracking down and removing preference plists, etc) and re-installed - still no
luck.
As an example of the problems I was having with iTunes, I was playing a music track quite happily and during this, I added a folder of files to the library. The track continued to play as the files were imported, the playback levels set, etc. At the end of my playing track, the music stopped, but iTunes "appeared" to continue playing music - it's just that there was no sound, and no track playing / progress bar displayed!!
Importing and level checking continued, as cover flow continued to change tracks as if iTunes was playing music normally.
At the end of my imports, still with tracks ticking over but no sound, I paused playback, and ht play again - and sound returned.
Thinking that there might be a corrupted iTunes library (or indeed, a corrupt media file - which one of 16,000 could it be?) I decided to rebuild my iTunes library.
I again deleted all traces of iTunes, installed 10.3.1 from a fresh download, then imported files from my backup disc to a fresh iTunes directory structure.
As an aside, my iTunes library is on my DroboPro, in the "/Volumes/drobo/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music" folder. I backup this folder to en external 1TB WD hard drive as well. Rebuilding my iTunes library was done by adding media files from the "/Volumes/drobo/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music" folder and, since this is a newer version of iTunes, writing the media files to "/Volumes/drobo/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media".
I left this to run overnight (and yes, I was till having spinning ball halts and delays from time to time if I tried to do other things).
Later that night, I was presented with a spinning ball, no response, and a machine that, although running, was not interested in keyboard or mouse input from me!!
On restarting my Mac, I used Terminal and went wandering through the "/Volumes/drobo/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media" directories and I identified that the last items being copied across were some podcasts. Since I could blow these away if I wanted to, I cleaned these files out of the backups stored on my WD drive, and then deleted the new directories I had been trying to create on my DroboPro.
Back to the last option given to me my the Genius - rebuild my Mac and recover from Time Machine.
Given that my Mac is now three years old and was delivered with Leopard (10.5.2, if I recall), and has migrated through all upgrades to Snow Leopard 10.6.7, as well as numerous software installations, removals and other tweaks, it was time to rebuild.
I did another Time Machine backup - just to be sure.
Snow Leopard DVD in hand, I re-initialised the hard drive and reinstalled OS X. On restarting, I was offered the option of restoring my data from Time Machine - I did NOT include settings or applications in the restore.
This means I now have a machine built from a fresh 10.6, and not a migration from 10.5.
After restoring, I used Software Update to bring everything up to scratch.
I also looked at my ~/Library/Preferences folder and deleted any plists that weren't at the current date. Reinstalling my applications would restore those anyway.
I was ruthless with the list of software I was prepared to reinstall, and further cut the list as I installed apps.
Now, with my backup iTunes library on my WD hard drive - missing a few podcasts - I built a new iTunes library from scratch, and all went well.
Any other things I tiied to do - watch and record television using EyeTV, run Terminal, install apps, etc - all proceeded without any hitches, and without spinning balls.
I was surprised at how many apps simply took off from where they left off - Dropbox and Evernote didn't even ask for my account details when they started up. Only a small number of apps wanted me to reinstall a licence key.
My zippy Mac was back, iTunes was feeding itself media files, and all was good with the world.
Now that my iTunes library has been rebuilt, all is working as I expect a Mac to work. My only "losses" have been a couple of iTunes playlists - but I see on the net that there is a workaround to recover these from an old iTunes library from Time Machine.
Rebuild and recovery was much quicker and easier that I thought - otherwise I'd have done it sooner!!! And after three years of constant use, upgrades and tweaking, it's good to have a fresh installation, especially with Lion only weeks away.
I reckon I'm ready for the next three years!!!!

Spinning beach ball for 45-60 seconds, then fine
For several months now, I've had the spinning beach ball issue on my Macbook Pro. Within the first 5 minutes after boot up, the spinning beach ball will occur, seemingly at random (no specific app or action), for 45-60 seconds. While this happens, the system becomes completely unresponsive. But after this occurrence within the first five minutes after startup, it never happens again and everything is fine - until I reboot of course.
I am running Snow Leopard and this problem was happening before I installed Snow Leopard, so that's not it. But one thing I did do, which I am semi-convinced is the culprit, is I replaced my hard drive with a Seagate 500 mb Momentus drive. The actual model # is SEAST9500420AS. I don't know for sure, but that's around the time this issue first started. I know there is/was a spinning beach ball problem with the newer Macbook Pros and they were attributing it to the hard drive which just so happens to be the same hard drive I now have in my Macbook Pro. There was recently an EFI update that seemed to fix the problem for the newer models, but mine is the first generation right when they went to Intel chips (bought mine in April, 2006). Problem is, if it is my drive, this new EFI update that fixes the issue on the new models won't install on mine.
I also did a verify disk and repair disk permissions, but that was no help. Another thing I found going through the discussion groups was that the problem could happen because both the Macbook Pro and the Seagate drive have anti-shock technology that could conflict with one another. So if you disabled the anti-shock on the Macbook Pro, it might solve the problem as it seemed to for some folks out there. But I did that and it didn't help either.
I'm thinking it's my hard drive, but don't know how to fix it. But it could be something I haven't looked at yet or thought of. I've been trying everything the last several months with no luck and it's been driving me batty! What's really strange is it only happens once and always within the first 5 minutes after start up. First I removed all my login items and restarted my computer. That didn't fix the problem.
So then I thought it might have something to do with Safari since that's one of the first things I open up when I start my computer and there are numerous reports in the discussions of spinning beach balls with Safari 4.0.3 which I have. So I purposely did not open Safari after startup. Problem still happened.
So then I thought maybe it has something to do with my internet connection. So I disconnected my internet connection and rebooted. Then I only opened programs that don't use online access. I leisurely opened up a program, did a few things in it, closed it, and then did the same thing with another program. Did some things with Finder. Purposely did not rush things. Waited 4-5 seconds after every operation's completion before executing another task. Never had more than one program open at any given time to eliminate any issue with two many resources open. You guessed it - the problem STILL happened. Not that it matters, but it happened when I hit Command-I on my hard drive icon to get the info pane. A fairly innocuous task. Froze up with the spinning beach ball for at least 45-50 seconds. Tried clicking a few other things while this was happening, but nothing. Once it freed up, a few things I clicked on previously suddenly became active and everything was fine again. Tried Command-I for a lot of different things with no problem. Response was instantaneous.
It pretty much happens 3-4 minutes into a session and then never happens again. And I think my test here eliminated several possibilities. Very frustrating. I hope this helps someone come up with a possible solution. Thanks.
