Long time users-Is it better to shut down at night or leave on continuously

Just wondering if there's a difference in the long run or not.
My MacBook is 2 months old, and I want to do what's best.
Thanks for the input. (I didn't know when I bought my Mac what a great support group I was getting!)

I normally just close the lid and let it go to sleep for the night...just like me, I guess. Anyway, whether plugged in or on battery, sleep turns the hard disk off but allows it to "wake" as you left it. There should be no reason to power it down unless a download requires it, rare occasions when a glitch may happen, or you won't be using it for a length of time.
Computers are built to run...I say let it run.

  • My laptop takes an extremely long time to start up after being shut down

When I try to start up my computer it takes between 3-5 mintues to start back up again.

    Any ideas?

There are probably a lot of items being started when the computer does. You can open up "System Preferences", click on "Users & Groups", and then click on "Login Items" for a particular user. If you don't see anything suspicious, or anything that can cause long startup issues, navigate to (by pressing shift-command-G when in Finder, and yes, the ~ is necessary):
~/Library/LaunchAgents (can also get here by typing /Users/<account name>/Library)
    /Library/LaunchAgents
    /Library/LanuchDaemons
    /Library/StartupItems
    /System/LaunchAgents
    /System/LaunchDaemons
    /System/StartupItems
If you don't see anything in there that would cause the "long" boot up time, then it is most likely something else (obviously...). If you have FileVault2 enabled, causing your entire hard drive to be enabled for Full Disk Encryption, that might increase the boot up time by a small amount. If you feel that your computer still is booting up way too slowly for your liking, then there could be some helpful indications during bootup. The next time you startup your mac, hold down the Command+V buttons on your keyboard, and you will see lines of text rather than your usual grey screen with the Apple logo

  • My mail program takes a long time to open and the whole system takes almost 2 minutes to shut down at night What should I do?

Hi, Recently my system has been slow to boot up in the morning & slower still to shut down at night.
Also my mail program is slow to open. I do have emails archived but my trash is always deleted & I'm trying to keep my "sent" folder not too full
Occasionally any programs I'm working in (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, etc) takes time to process whatever task I'm doing. (This happens maybe once or twice a week, not often)
    thanks

Yes it is.  Thank you very much.  You appear to have adaquate hard drive space available.  Now try the following....
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer.
Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963 and restart your computer.

  • Very long blue screen with spinning sprocket at shut down

When I shut down my Mac Mini, after everything closes properly I get a blue screen with a spinning sprocket for a very long time. I end up having to power down and restart. It happens most of the time, interupted with an occasional proper shut down.
Any ideas on what this means?
    Thanks for your time.
    Kevin

Check Console in Utilities for messages from around the time of the shutdown. Check system.log expecially, but look around at some of the other logs as well. Also, try booting in Verbose Mode, CMD-V at startup. This will scroll text of the bootup sequence before it goes to the regular screen, but the next time you shutdown, it might scroll text of the shutdown sequence and give a clue as to what's going on there. Be ready with a camera or notepad to write down what you see.

I have an older macbook pro and the hard drive is starting to go (making loud noises). i tried to back up to an external hard drive (my passport essential se) using time machine and the computer keeps shutting down. the same thing happens when just trying to save my pictures from iphoto to a flash drive. suggestions to complete backup please?

Sounds like you'll need to access that drive while it is not booted. You need to replace it anyway, so do that, then one way or another (ext enclusure, et), access it and copy files.
If you keep trying to boot it, you might kill it for good and not get your files, so just swap it out first.

    Hello christine valentina,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
If the failed installation of Java is preventing your computer from shutting down normally, then I'd like you to please first try to force quit the unresponsive installer.

  • Sleep or shut down at night?

Hi, it just occurred to me that in summer with frequent lightning storms especially during the night, might it be a good idea to shut the computer down and disconnect the power adapter at night?
I tend to use the computer plugged in during the day, with short periods of battery use, and then at night I leave it plugged in and just close the lid. Even with old PC's I did this without a problem, but with my new MBP I don't want to take any chances!
    Thanks,
    Karen

Thanks.. re. shutting down at night, I thought there was an issue of wear and tear from starting up so often.. otherwise it would certainly be simpler to shut down and not worry about nighttime power surges.
I don't worry about wear and tear, because although technically it might be better to run your computer at full power 24/7 to avoid premature wear from thermal and power cycling, realistically nearly every Mac user either sleeps or shuts down their laptop at least once a day whether that's at night or merely to transport it (since it is a laptop after all) and therefore powering off is the norm, and it is not causing mass early laptop deaths.
We are also weighing leaving the computer plugged in versus the potential damage from a lightning strike, and we're saying the potential damage from sleeping or shutting down at night is assumed to be less severe than that of a direct lightning hit.
Re. sleeping the computer all night and draining the battery, I do that once a month to calibrate the battery, but isn't it recommended to not drain deeply too often?
You are right that is is recommended to not do deep discharges too often. But an overnight sleep does not drain the battery that far, maybe a few percent. What I didn't mention is that if your battery is new and fully charged, it will probably last around a week in sleep mode. One night off the charger isn't going to drain the battery unless, as I mentioned, it's an old battery with a fraction of its original capacity.

  • 1020 shuts down at night - requires soft reset

I am on my second 1020 .  First one had a faulty audio jack.
This one shuts down at night inexplicably.  I wake up to check email in the morning and the screen is black.  No buttons do anything.  My only hope is to soft reset.  I charge overnight using the charger that shipped with it.  Twice it has happened while charging.  Once it happened while not charging.  I've had one other likely unrelated crash - while on a call I hit the camera button by accident and the screen turned a rainbow of colored pixels.  Had to soft reset.
I emailed Nokia support - nothing.  I'm assuming I should take this 1020 back as well but I can't keep dealing with faulty phones.  I tried removing a bunch of apps from my start screen and didn't seem to make a difference.  All I have is basic stuff - phone, email accounts, facebook, store, xbox music.
any suggestions or best to assume some faulty hardware, perhaps memory?  It has had a shut down 4 of the 5 nights I've owned it.

No not exactly - that particular phone did better by ensuring I killed all app background tasks (check settings periodically as apps turn them back up after updates and running for 1st time), and using the back button to back out of apps instead of hitting the home button.
However - that phone got stuck in a funky state where it thought the phone had a headset plugged in even when it didn't.  So it was returned, and I'm not on my third 1020.  The reboots on this one are worse then the prior 2 in frequency - happens once or twice a day at least.  The only benfit of this one is that it doesn't lock up like the other one did.  It will reboot and come back gracefully. Background tasks and backing out of apps hasn't helped this behavior.
What is baffling is how all three of my phones despite being set up the same have had very different  behaviors in terms of random restarts.

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

my imac (intel core i5, OS 10.10.1) shuts down every night and will not "wake up" next morning -- it never used to do that -- if I hold down the start button more than twice for many seconds, then it will finally boot up and works fine all day – I’ve tried shutting it down and unplugging it, and that does not work -- I’ve run disk utilities checked permissions, and run anti-virus and get no adverse results – I cannot figure out what is different that causes this problem

From previous experience 3 indicates a shutdown initiated by the SMC (System Management Controller) — hardware responsible for many low-level functions including power, sleep, lights, and fan activity.
    Try resetting it:
Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset. Read all the steps.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

Updated clean install of OS 10.9.5 to new HDD on my 2008 Mac Pro running 10.6.8 via the app store:  The Mac seems to shut down over night.  Not overheating.   Energy Saver, Computer sleep set to Never, and Display sleep set to Never.  Screen saver set to never.   Very odd.  will see if it does it 3rd night in a row.

PowerMac do not run 10.6, and are not Intel Xeon....
    Repair
Boot from another hard drive or 10.6 DVD or fsck
    Or restore from last backup
Clone your system to another drive
I advise Disk Utility AND Disk Warrior as a start along with multiple backup sets.

  • Long time user, starting over?

Preliminary: Lightroom 5 (cc), on Mac OS 10.9.2
I have "used" Lightroom for a long time, mostly as a browser. I have tended to work with the same organization as my original file folders. A couple of years ago, I started going back through all of my 40,000 photos and using flags, and creating smart folders. Having obtained a couple of books on Lightroom, I now wonder if I would be better off re-importing my files in date format, or some new form of organization.
I worry about working with my existing catalog. When I use the synchronize command on some of the older folders, I get the famous spinning beachball, so I wonder if a new clean catalog might be a good idea. Are the pick flags included in the metadata which is placed in sidecar files? If I import from the folders where the files are now, will the picks and keywords get imported? If not, should I export parts of my current catalog piecemeal, then import into a new catalog to preserve the picks?
In other words, what are the best options to clean up a flawed organizational system. Try to work within an existing catalog or create a new one?
    Thanks for any help.

In my opinion: NO don't do this
The biggest bang for your buck, the most powerful thing you can do now to organize your photos, the best use of your time and energy, is to add keywords, captions and other metadata, and use those as your tool for organizing and searching. Furthermore, if you already have meaningful folders today (sounds like you do), then going to an organization with folders in date format destroys the meaningful organization you have today, and replaces it with something harder to remember and use, namely date folders. Date based folders would be a step backwards in your ability to find your photos. Unless you can remember the dates that all 40,000 of your photos were taken, date based folders do not help you in any way, this will cause dis-organization.
re the pick flags included in the metadata which is placed in sidecar files?
    No
If I import from the folders where the files are now, will the picks and keywords get imported?
    No for picks
If not, should I export parts of my current catalog piecemeal, then import into a new catalog to preserve the picks?
What would be the point? You would still have the same "organization" that is making you unhappy today.
In other words, what are the best options to clean up a flawed organizational system. Try to work within an existing catalog or create a new one?
It sounds like what you are thinking about destroys any organization you might have now that you might want to keep, your folders and picks and "smart collections" (yes, I know you said "smart folders", I believe you really meant "smart collections"); and what you are thinking about doesn't replace your existing system with improved organization, it replaces it with a system with worse organziation where you have to remember the dates that all 40,000 of your images were taken, something I highly doubt you are able to remember. Don't go that way. Instead, Lightroom gives you very powerful tools, keywords, captions and other metadata. Work within your existing organizaton and catalog. Use these tools to your benefit.

This has nothing to do with Adobe. You are running with insufficient user privileges and are not allowed to make permanent changes to the system. Make sure to install with admin priivileges and also tame system restore and otehr security functions.
