Long WPA password reconnect problem

My iPod touch connects flawlessly to different known Wi-Fi networks when I move, but fails when coming back to a network where the password is particularly long (34 characters) : it asks for the passphrase as it had forgotten it.
Though, powering the iPod off and on again, it connects to Wi-Fi without asking for the (long) password, showing that it remembers it perfectly.
I suspect a bug related to password length in the reconnect function...
Did anybody observed this same behaviour ?

Mea culpa; that episode, by itself, is not a great reference. I was mostly mentioning Security Now! as a good introduction to cryptography - easily understandable by non-mathematicians.
Passwords MUST be over 8 characters for WPA/WPA2. Recommendations vary, since they're based on an individual's opinion and motives.
Calling this key a "password" can mislead users into thinking that "S3cur!ty" (for example) is a strong password. That string WILL appear in any rainbow table. If, for example, that's your password, and your SSID is "linksys", a script kiddie can be reading your traffic in less than an hour. If your password is 63 characters of randomly generated copied/pasted ASCII, it'll be good for much longer. I'd rather change my password once or twice a year than once an hour.
If you're using an iPhone or iPod Touch, and must actually type the password into the device, you might well want to use fewer characters.
I won't make a specific recommendation, since it's a personal decision, but I do think people should get good information if they want it. Sometimes, late at night, I'd rather let them listen to Steve Gibson than explain myself. Thanks for pointing out the need for clarification though, you're right, that episode is a little off topic.

  • Leopard won't accept WPA password where Tiger accepted

I've been doing all sorts of diagnostic experiments trying to figure out why I can't wirelessly connect under Leopard using WPA encryption while I was able to do so successfully under Tiger... With Leopard, encryption turned off or WEP encryption works just fine but NOT WPA and that's the encryption I want to use.. I've finally done what I believe to be a consistent and well controlled experiment which is telling me that Leopard will not accept a WPA password that is perfectly acceptable under Tiger... They changed some of the wireless interface gui's between Tiger and Leopard but there is one that appears to be identical between the two and that is the Network Setup Assistant.app that is found (under either Tiger or Leopard) at /System/Library/CoreServices... And I also have a cloned version of my two week old Tiger (10.4.9) system with all my files contained on an external firewire drive. If I boot off that Tiger system and walk through the above mentioned Assistant, when I get to the place where it asks me to enter the WPA password, it accepts that password and moves forward to the next step 100% of the time. I've tried it many times... If I then reboot under Leopard, walk through precisely the same assistant and enter precisely the same password (I've typed it many times, used copy and paste many other times to ensure no typos), instead of connecting I get (100% of the time) a message that says "Sorry, The Password you entered is invalid".... I also notice that it takes a while (maybe 10 seconds) for it to come back with that error for whatever that might be worth... The reason the "100% of the time" above is important is because when I just go to Network in system preferences and walk through that wizard while trying to set up this WPA network, I usually get simply "connection failed" but if I just keep trying eventually it always says it connected (though in reality it never does)... And it never tells me that the password is invalid but this other wizard tells me that 100 % of the time... So when it tells me it connected, I will then go try to connect to a web page and it never works... So why it sometimes tells me it connects I can't say but reality, it never does and now I'm slowly becoming convinced it is because it never accepts my WPA password, never....
So does anyone out there know whether there is some particular format for WPA passwords??? My router is a NetGear WGU624... I've contacted NetGear about this and they are worthless... I might try them again now that I've learned that the password is NEVER being accepted but I don't hold much hope that they can help...
Any ideas about what might be going wrong with passwords under WPA in Leopard???
    thanks... bob...

I've been pursuing the same issue for a few days and just found a resolution (but not the root cause). (Same symptoms seen by Jason Guinn's over on http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1195706) I upgraded my PowerBook and MBP just fine but my iMac had the problems you and Jason describe.
    Dig it. This WPA2 password:
    3R3HFVNGxe845xrk
Works for the PowerBook and MBP. But for some reason when I use that password from the iMac, I get the (broken) behavior described. Took my setup to the Genius and he reset my Airport Extreme base station and set the password to:
    testtest
And the problematic behavior resolved. I got full bars and was able to ping and browse everything. I have since changed my password to something more secure. My advice is start with testtest and see if the problem resolves. Then experiment with some stronger WPA2 passwords that work for all your systems.
Incidentally, I had similar issues with the wireless on my TiVO when I set it up about six months ago. For some reason their system wouldn't accept the (long) WPA2 password I was using that the time. At that time I configured the shorter one (3R3HFVNGxe845xrk) for the sake of the TiVO. It's so odd that two vendors have had bugs exercised by particular key material. So wierd.

  • WPA password stopped working for WIFi

This is a weird one. I'm staying at someone's home and using their WFi network with my MBP, iPhone and iPad. Everything has been fine until today. The iphone and iPad continue to work fine, but the MBP no longer connects. Airport now asks for the WPA password but will not accept it - I just get "connection timeout". I'm runnng Snow Leopard. I've seen others in the forum with similar problems, but no solutions. What could be the problem? Nothing has been changed in any settings!
    thanks

You're typing in the wrong password or typing it in incorrectly. Ask the someone to verify the password in their router's admin setup. BTW WPA passwords are very weak. Tell them to use WPA2

  • HP 7410 officejet-network wizard does allow me to enter WPA password

I upgraded my old Verizon router to a newer model (actiontec) and it works perfectly with all my wireless devices in the house, except for my printer! The wireless feature on my HP office jet 7410 All in One Printer worked great on my old router. However when I went to re-connect my printer with the new router I was not able to get to the WPA screen to allow me to add my WPA password (from my router.) I saw two other challenges on this forum about not being able to get to the WPA screen on the setup in the wizard. One guy got in and the other didn't (I believe he changed a setting in his router.) Well I'm one of those who didn't and I followed the instructions exactly from the manual. On the set-up button I went to "Network" and clicked on "Wireless setup wizard." I found my SSID and hit ok. I selected my network name and it automatically comes up with "Enter WEP Key". It doesn't offer any choices to go to  "Infrastructure" which would allow me to choose WPA.  This other guy on the forum had the same problem and someone tried to give him a solution but it didn't work. I reset my factory default, I unplugged the printer for 5 minutes, I even tried to restore my network defaults but nothing worked. It still defaults me to the WEP screen. I did notice when I printed my network configurations that my URL address, IP address, Subnet mask and default gateway were all 0's. I even uninstalled my printer software and re-installed it connecting with a USB to see if it would reset my settings but it didn't.  I am at a loss and very frustrated. Please help!

Hello there! Welcome to the forums @hotelexec,
I read through your post about how you're trying to connect to your new router with your Officejet 7410. I could be wrong, but I don't see where you had tried entering your WPA passphrase into the WEP screen that populates. It may not work, however I would suggest giving it a shot to see if it will take your password and connect to the network. I have seen it work before and I'm curious to hear if this will also work for you too!
    Let me know what happens!

  • Why does Mac Mini Server refuse to accept my Airport WPA password?

I've several Macs all able to access my ADSL net connection with no problems. However I am trying to configure a Mac Mini Server to do so but it keeps asking for the WPA password which I've correctly entered.
Any clues for a solution please?
    Thanks
    Peter

try again.  delete the account, and start from scratch.  pay real close attention to the password entry, including capitals and any special characters.
At one point i got real frustrated with that same issue.  to this day I do not know what the issue was.  but i ended up going into my google account from a pc, and changing the password to a new one, then readded the gmail account to the pad and all was well.  (you then need to updaye any other devices using the same g mail account)

  • WPA Password

I am trying to type my WPA password however the HP Officejet 4500 (G510n) does not allow me to type a $. I have went through all the symbols and it covers just about every single one except a $.  How can I get this to work?

     HI jdk70,
I'm sorry to hear you are having problems trying to get your Officejet 4500 onto your home wireless network.
I have included a copy of a post by Jon-W her on the HP Support Forums, with the relevant section highlighted.  I know it talks about a different printer and setting it up on Chromebox but the steps are still the same.  This is all done from your computer after resetting the network defaults from the front panel of your printer.  This will allow you to input the special character that is in your WPA passphrase. For reference I have also included a link to Jon-W's original post.

  • WPA password? URGENT HELP NEEDED

hi, i have a black macbook os x and i recently had a new hardrive put in at the panama city, panama macstore.. when i come home after my 10 months there I am asked for  a WPA password for my home wireless internet that i before was able to enter without this password with my other hardrive. I have "OUTRESEARCHED" google to find how people get this password and none of the recommendations work for me. its not in my keychain access in utilities, its not on the bottom of my router, and none of the http addresses that it says will load for me. the person who installed our wireless internet said he does not know of this password being created. i am desperate here. please help!!! thank you very very much for anyone who is able to

    Hi,
If necessary, you should not have a problem changing the password for the wireless network. Depending upon the exact base station (router) make and model, there should be a way of resetting this device and accessing a setup program/page.

  • C4385 WPA Password change dumps wireless

I made the mistake of changing the WPA passphrase on my wireless router. Is there no provision for this in the c4385 setup? The printer will not work as a wireless device anymore. I even tried changing the password back to the orginal password. No luck. Still broken. I've uninstalled all HP software and have done a clean install. Setup doesn't offer the option of setting up the printer as a wireless printer anymore. It's going from bad to worse. DO NOT EVER CHANGE YOUR WEP OR WPA PASSWORD is the only lesson I've learned from this little experience. Anyone have any advice or similar experiences?
    ~m

After two attempts at clean/rebooted reinstalling (with USB cable) on my last attempt worked inexplicably WITHOUT using the USB cable! Printer is working again. I had to change the password back to the old password. Now a new problem is happening the HP Digital Imaging Monitor continually pops up but I'm starting a new thread on that one.

  • Keep getting requests for a WPA password

This problem only seems to have occurred since I got my new imac. We have a Belkin wireless router and I continuously get a small window opening asking for a WPA password.  I have been to the belkin website and followed various steps as best I could http://en-uk-support.belkin.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1669 where you can set your own password.  but the windows continue to pop up with requests for said password.  whenever I submit the password it mostly just says connection timeout. I keep submitting and submitting  and then occasionally (sometimes after several hours of trying) the window just disappears at which stage it DOES re-connect me to the www.    It`s all a bit baffling.  I have tried telephoning belkin directly but so far have just had the usual infuriating recorded messages with a list of options followed by sub options which don`t help and don`t include getting through to a real human being.   hence my posting here. Though I don`t hold out much hope of being able to resolve this one through the apple boards. but you never know,  Many thanks,   Mark

A question: Does this dialogue  area where you have to enter your password also have a checkbox on it that asks you if you want your password saved to keychain?
If so, uncheck it first, then enter your password and recheck the box.
Not sure if this is a solution or not but I thought I'd throw my two cents worth in, if it's worth 2 cents.

  • Can't remember wpa password

I am trying to configure my printer to print wirelessly, but when i get it set up it asks for the wpa password. how can i find this password  or what is the password that i need to use/

    Hi,
Good change that if you do not know its, its a standard WPA from your ISP, so check the bottom of your accespoint/router.

  • Add WPA password to HP Wireless printer on iMac

I have a new (3 months old) and a HP Wireless printer. I did not have security on my wireless network and everything worked fine. Today I added WPA Security and now my printer cant connect to the wireless network. I assume the printer needs the WPA password, but how do I add it?? I tried pushing buttons on the printer but cant find any feature where you can update the wireless network. Do I need to uninstall the printer and reinstall with the new settings? If so, how do I uninstall a printer on my new iMac?
    Thank you

Access the HP printers internal web setup, security settings can be modified there.

Read another post in the forum about this and it appears this app also installs a profile with a proxy service that you will have to try and delete as well. Check that out.

  • Long list of "software" problems on iphone 4.

My wife and I have iphone 4s, purchased about a year apart (I got mine as a cheaper leftover after the 4S came out.) My phone is fine but hers is having a long list of weird problems nothing seems to permanently fix. It is about 2 1/2 years old, and covered under a product replacement plan from Future Shop, where we got it. (Our city just got it's first Apple Store over the holidays.)
The problem is all of her issues seem to be software or "network" related, yet all the common fixes/tests are not yielding any results.
The biggest issue with the phone is with iMessage. I know it is normal for the occasional iMessage to send as an SMS instead, especially if there is a hiccup in the network. The thing is, hers does this all the time, sometimes mid-conversation. If I send her 3 messages in quick succession, she might get #1 and #3 as iMessages but #2 wont appear until 15 minutes later as a text message--making trying to converse via message really annoying. It has done this for several months now, getting progressively worse. We have 3 friends who are our neighbors in our apartment building. We can send a group iMessage to everyone, everyone will get it as an iMessage, but she will get it as a text, usually anywhere from 10-20 minutes later. One of our friends can't even send her an iMessage--he will only ever get the green "send as text" option for the send button, even if they are in the same room, and connected to the same wireless network. When another friend in the same apartment tries to iMessage her from her iMac, it tells her "that is not a valid number for iMessage"--yet it clearly is, because iMessage DOES work...sometimes. All 5 of us are on the same network, Virgin Mobile, so it is not the network--none of us have any problems except for her. It is frustrating because during the day we are both at work and don't have coinciding breaks and sometimes I NEED her to get a message, and it is bad now to the point where I can't be guaranteed she got my message until I get a response back later on. We have not tried turning "send as SMS" off yet, because we don't mind the phone sending an iMessage as a text when iMessage is not available--what the problem is is the delay, the likelihood she may never even *get* the message, (sometimes it doesn't send at all.) and the fact that it will still do this even on a strong full signal or wifi (the wifi network in our apartment is fine, our computers, xbox, 3DS's and my phone never have any issues.) We can try it, but my worry is that if something is wrong with iMessage, turning off SMS will mean she'll never get some of these at all. (more often than this happens as it is, mind you)
Her safari is also extremely laggy, which seems to hint at a connection problem, maybe.
The phone has been reset 3 times. Once, we reset it and restored from backup. No dice. Then, future shop reset it from the phone itself while they had it over night trying to duplicate the issue. Still no dice. Finally, on the advice of a future shop tech, who said they can't do anything unless we can prove a hardware failure of some kind, advised resetting from itunes and NOT restoring from backup. So we did that--the phone was completely reset as "new phone", and nothing has been restored from backup, only contacts from iCloud. Right now the phone has only 2 apps re-downloaded on it, and a few songs, and it did it again earlier today. So, still no luck. (It hopefully goes without saying we have verified all her software updates are done and everything is fully up to date.)
After the reset, a new issue surfaced--it was vibrating randomly. After troubleshooting, we discovered she was getting vibrate alerts from email, despite the fact that email push notifications are OFF and her email app was closed at the time. She had to turn off vibration and sound for email to get it to stop. Now, maybe that is what she has to do, but my iphone has push notifications off as well--but sound and vibrate still on--but will only beep/vibrate if the mail app is open. Otherwise, I don't get the notification. (Maybe my phone is broken, and hers is doing what it should for once? LOL) The thing is, she never touched that setting the first time she got the phone, and has NEVER received vibrate alerts for email. Why suddenly after a full reset would things be enabled that were never on in the first place?
So I am stumped. It is a huge inconvenience to keep resetting this stupid thing, and we don't really want to pay the genius bar to look at it, but I can't help but feel like these recurring problems can't be software related when we've had this reset so many times--and it's not "network" issues because she is the only one. We have tried checking the diagnostic record for panic.plist (wishful thinking I guess), read through a ton of posts here, and tried what we could... any further advice/what we can try? Is there any chance this IS hardware, something corrupt in the phone memory/storage? An issue with the receiver? If so, how do we prove it? Can the genius bar scan it somehow?

If you have an Apple Store in town, setup a genius bar appointment.  The genius bar tech should look at the phone and try to diagnose the problem free of charge.  They may not want to fix it free of charge, but they should perform their diagnosis and tell you what they find for free.
It sounds to me like her iPhone is losing its connection to the Apple iMessage servers.  You might try actually turning off iMessage snd signing out of iCloud on her iPhone, then after a restart of the iPhone sign back into iCloud, then turn iMessage back on.  There is no guarnatee that this will resolve her problems, but it might help.  If her iPhone is not connected to external power, and it has been more than 10-15 minutes since she last used it, it has probably turned off the wifi radio, and will be depending upon cellular data for the iMessage traffic to flow.  This could easily account for the delays she is seeing, and even it dropping back to SMS, especially if you have poor cellular data coverage.  If this is the case, then getting something like a Mophie Juice Pack Air for her iPhone might help, as it would allow her iPhone to be connected to external power (the Juice Pack) thus keepig the wifi radio on more.

  • Mail Account NO LONGER stores Passwords for Mail Accounts

Since my last restart my mac mail accounts (.mac, company, etc) no longer STORE passwords for either the send or smtp receive... Anyone experience this before? I'm going to try and toss the mail pref files and even delete my accounts, but since it's happening to ALL of my accounts (5) at the same time I'm concerned that I'll be wasting my time until I fix what's gotten broken...

Since these password are stored in your Keychain, try running Keychain First Aid on your Keychain via Keychain Access.
