Longest possible range using AirPort Express (N) and MacBook Air

I was wondering which setting i should use in the AirPort Express Setup for longest range possible. I am not really concerned with speed or compatibility because I only use this AP for an internet ONLY connection to my MacBook Air while traveling.
Typically, I create this network in hotel rooms but would like to gain access outside of the room such as common areas, pool etc. I imagine there would be some other WiFi Networks, cordless phones etc. in the area but not an overwhelming amount to cause too much interference.
Here are the options in the AirPort Utility program
-802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)
-802.11n (2.4 Ghz)
-802.11n (802.11a compatible)
-802.11n only (5 GHz)
Any help specific to my situation would much appreciated. I have done a lot of research on the internet but most articles are a comparison of speeds that is not overly relevant in my case as i am only concerned with internet not internal file transfers. I travel internationally so a cell connection isn't really an option for me either.
Thanks so much!
shane

2.4 GHz for sure. It has longer range due to the lower frequency band. There are fewer interferes in the 5 GHz band but the range is shorter.
The b/g/n don't matter as they are just bits that are carried over the radio waves. If the RSSI is too low, the link rate would just fall back, that's how they work.

  • Is it possible to use Airport Express to extend my Cisco E2500 wireless network

    Hi everyone,
I just bought the new 2012 Airport Express yesterday, and want to extend my network which is using Cisco E2500 via the Ethernet port, but I don't know how to do it, anyone can tell me if it is possible and how to do it?

Hi Bob, I have successfully extend my Cisco E2500 network using the 2012 Airport Express via Ethernet port, below is the things I have configured.
    1. Inside AirPort Utility - Wireless Tab, choose "Create a wireless network" in the Network Mode option, use the same Wireless Network Name, Wireless Security, Wireless Passowrd as the Cisco E2500.
    2. In the Internet Tab, I just choose using DHCP since the Cisco E2500 will be the one to distribute IP Address, then the IP address, subnet mask, router address and DNS servers address has been assigned successfully to Airport Express.
    3. In Network Tab, use "Off (Bridge Mode)" for the Router Mode option.
    4. Click Update, and let the Airport Express to update itself and restart.
All done, and all my devices in different part of my house can access the internet connection, also my iMac in the living room and airplay music to the speaker that connect to my Airport Express inside the bedroom.

  • Is it possible to use Airport Express as a repeater and as an airplay device at the same time?

    Hi,
I am using airplay with airport express stations in combination with conventional speakers for my home entertainment. Works great. Only thing is that I have a massive block of concrete in my flat. Is it possible to use one of my express stations as a repeater and at the same time as a streaming device for airplay? Thanks!

Sure it works only with apple routers? Cause than I could stop trying.
Yes, it's proprietary like everything else Apple. You could look at this:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B006BBYXPA/?tag=hydra0b-21&hvadid=9550946469&ref=asc_ df_B006BBYXPA
I have had great success installing these for BT Home Hubs and VM Superhubs.
@JoeMY - If it is "joined" to the FritzBox then it won't work, it only works with Apple routers connected via Ethernet or as the main router.

  • HT4587 Is it possible to use AirPort Express and wired speakers simultaneously?

While playing music via AirPort Express for AirPlay and iTunes can I additionally play the same music through a speaker wired directly (through the 3.5mm jack) from my iMac?

Ok so the answer is in itunes help all the time! I was directed to - Itunes Help - Listen and Watch - Choose Speakers. Thanks to the guys at Western Computers Cirencester for their help. All now setup.

  • How to use airport express wired and wireless at the same time

    Hi,
I currently have FiOS with Verizon, they ran a coax cable to the Verizon router. I didn't ask them to switch to CAT6 cable since I have an airport extreme base station and an airport express base station (both are the newest generation). I ran a CAT6 cable from the Verizon FiOS router to my AEBS (extreme) to make it the default wireless router. The Verizon router and extreme are in one room. Now, the Airport express is in my living. I'd like to extend the wireless network from the extreme. However, I can't seem to find a way to use both wired and wireless from the airport express at the same time. It's now either via wired, or wiresless. So is there a way to get both work?

Can you tell us if you used Apple's instructions for a "roaming" network?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4260
Although the instructions picture a 2nd AirPort Extreme in the illustrations, the setup instructions would be exactly the same for an AirPort Express.

  • Is it possible to use Airport Express via ethernet to connect to internet?

    Hi!
My MacBook Pros Wifi-antenna has stopped working and tells me there is no hardware installed.
As a quick fix I thought I could buy an Airport Express and an ethernet cable, thus connecting the Pro to the AE via ethernet, and then connecting the AE to my cable modem wireless router.
But it just seems impossible. Seems the other way works just fine, but that won't help me.
I'm having no problems connecting to the router via
    mac -->ethernet-->AE-->ethernet-->router,
but as soon as I pull out the ethernet cable between AE and router, the connection drops.
I tried restarting the computer, the router, the AE, but still no go.
I have tried both connecting to existing network, and expanding the wireless network.
Also the router bridge mode is greyed out in Airport Utility/Network.
    Anyone with any revelatory insights?
    Thanks in advance,
    Tom

  • AirPort Express capacity and MacBook compatibility?

Hi there to anyone that can help,
Just a few amature questions really before I buy. I have a 2Ghz Core Duo Macbook which is not compatible with 'n' speed wirless internet, therefore I'm not bothering with buying Airport Extreme. I will be plugging the Airport Express into a Netgear router via ethernet cable.
Please could someone answer these for me, thanks:
    - Will AirPort Express work with the Airport on my Macbook wirelessly, and therefore I'll be able to play my iTunes music from Express?
    - How do you put your iTunes music on Express in the first place?
    - Will I be able to able to use the internet and Airtunes at the same time ok?
    - How much capacity of music can the Airport Express hold?
Thank you very much for reading. I'll look forward to a reply,
    Reason 346

Hi there Tesserax, thanks very much for the reply and welcome.
Sorry I haven't been able to respond as fast as I'd hoped. Your post explained a lot thank you, and yes you're right I must have got the Apple TV information confused with Express
I thought that Express would act as a sharing server. Basically, I have purchased Logic Studio, with Logic Pro 8 included. I want to free up some space on my MacBook before I install it because it takes up a lot of room.
I was thinking of trying to put my iTunes music somewhere else so it is not taking up space on my MacBook hard drive. I have an external hard drive which I could use, but I'd have to keep connecting it everytime I wanted to use my iTunes music.
I saw this on the Apple Airport Extreme product page:
    "Instant drive sharing.
New to AirPort Extreme, AirPort Disk turns almost any external USB hard drive into a shared drive. Simply connect the drive to the USB port on the back of your AirPort Extreme and — voila — all the documents, videos, photos, and other files on the drive instantly become available to anyone on the secure network, Mac and PC alike. It’s perfect for file sharing, collaborative projects, and more."
So would I be able to put my iTunes music on the external hard drive, connect it to Extreme, and then tell iTunes that my Library is at that location? So every time I opened iTunes it wouldn't say "Your Library Is Missing", and all my files would be accessible wirelessly? I pressume this doesn't work with just Express?
    Thank you for reading.

  • How to use Lightroom from iMac and Macbook Air so that I can edit any/all photos in my catalog?

I have lightroom catalog setup on my desktop (iMac).  But, I would like to edit photos from my new MacBook Air when I have the free time.  How do I set this up so that any edits done on my laptop sync with my desktop catalog?

    Craig:
In the future you might look into an external FW hard drive from which you can operate the library.  Then, if you need to move it to another machine just unplug the drive and and plug it in to the other Mac.  For the MacBook Air you'd probably want a small (physical size) buss powered drive that would be an easy travel mate.
For future projects, particularly books, consider creating a separate library for it.  You can assemble the photos you want in it in an album in your primary library and use iPhoto Library Manager to copy that album to the project library.  They are often small enough that then can be copied to a flash drive for transfer to other Macs.

  • Using Airport Express as internet connection for one Mac and one PC

Will probably be judged a complete dork for this question. I have successfully set up my Imac G5 to run an internet connection through an Airport express. My partner runs a PC (Windows XP) and I want to connect this too. Have installed a USB wireless card on the PC, and installed Airport Utility, but it just won't find the Airport Express - it will however find the Imac with something like 96% signal strength. So I set up a network on the Mac and have successfully linked into it with the PC, but it soon comes up with a connectivity problem that will not allow internet browsing. So two questions - can I connect two computers to the Airport Express at once for internet browsing, or do I have to do it through linking the PC to a wireless network? If the latter is the route - any ideas on what the connectivity issue will be? Help!

No, not if the AirPort Express "joins" the wireless network.
No, I do not want to join a network.
It is possible to have the AirPort Express "create" a separate wireless network that would not have access to the Internet, but if you did this, you would need to log off of your normal network....(losing your Internet connection) and then log onto the AirPort Express network when you wanted to listen to AirPlay.
Then, when you wanted to have Internet access, you would have to log off of the AirPort Express network and log back onto your normal wireless network.
Ok, I understand that it is not possible to use airport express only for sound streaming while having an Internet connection at the same time. Airport express does need to join a network if I want sound streaming next an Internet connection. I wanted airport express not to get into way of my Internet connection because in this case the sound streaming messes up sometimes. When I configure airport express only as a sound output, the problems I encounter fade away but then I cannot access to the Internet. Anyhow thanks a lot for the answer.

  • I have a MacPro 2008 workstation without Airport or Airport Extreme CArd isntalled. Can I use Airport Express to connect (wireless) to my wireless network? If so, can I then connect my Airport Extreme to my MAcPro by a ethernetcable ?

I have a MacPro 2008 workstation. It has no Airport/Airport card so I have to use an ethernetcable to connect to my modem. As the MAcpro
is in my office in the attic and the wireless modem is in the basement I have a problem. I wonder if it is possible to use Airport Express to connect to the wireless network? Itshould be like this: in my office I connect the MacPro with AE through an ethernet cable. If I can then get AE to connect (wireless...) to my wireless network I should be ablle to connect my MacPro to internet/wireless network. Is this possible???? Any suggestions are very much appriciated. Thank you.

Apple calls this configuration a ProxySTA.
To activate ProxySTA, you must set up the Express to join a wireless network and then enable the Allow Ethernet Clients setting; both settings are located in the Wireless tab of AirPort Utility.

  • How do i sync iMessage on my phone and macbook air

imessage on my phone and macbook air used to be synced, in that all of the messages either sent or recieved would show up on both my iphone 5s and my macbook, in the last week this hasnt happened though and the messages only show up on one or ther other; if my computer is on they only show up on there but if its off they will come to my phone, how can i get them to sync again to make then come up on both??

    Hi bec1993,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities!
I believe there may be an issue revolving around the Apple iD or the iMessaging accounts being used on your iPhone and MacBook Air.
In order for iMessages to sync between iOS devices they need to use the same Apple iD. This basically will link all your iOS devices in n Apple ecosystem where they will all be synced across all your iOS devices.
The first thing to do is check if the iMessaging accounts are using the same Apple iD:
To do this first on the Mac go to the application Messages:
              1.          Click messages from the menu bar at the top of the screen
              2.          Click Preferences
              3.          Click Accounts, from here you will see all the places where you are getting messages to your MacBook.
              4.          Look at all the accounts where the iMessaging description is/the accounts that are sending and receiving iMessages on your MacBook Air. They all have iMessage in the description below the address
    Now go to your iPhone:
              1.          Go to settings
              2.          Scroll down to Messages
              3.          Make sure that iMessage is turned on
              4.          Then go to Send and Receive and click this
              5.          Make sure that the Apple iD at the top of the screen matches address that was found in Step 4 of the first part and make sure they match up and are identical.
If they aren't - you can change the wrong one and this with fix your problem and have the messages resyncing again.
If they are the same and still not syncing, simply log out of the accounts on both sign out in the preferences on Messages OS X and log out in Messages iOS and then reenter your details in both correctly.
I hope this helps and please keep be posted as to if you succeed.
    Many Thanks
    iBenjamin Crowley
