Longevity of Harman Soundsticks III speakers?

I just bought the Airport Express and am using it with Bose Companion II speakers (also new - trying out and not crazy about them). SO, I am considering buying the Harman Soundsticks III. I hear great things about them from reviews, but I just have one question - how long do they last? How long before they develop problems like a humming noise?
The reason I ask is because, for the past few years, I used Logitech z-2300's. The sound the 2300's is great, but after about 1 year, the subwoofer developed a steady hum when plugged into the electric socket even though the speakers were turned off. It's been like this in 2 apartments so I know it's not my electric wiring in the apartment building. The 2300's are plugged directly into the electricity with nothing else connected to them as I only connect the laptop when I listen to music. It has been very annoying to have to unplug them after each use because of the humming noise.
I don't want to repeat the humming problem with new speakers, so if anyone has any information as to how long the Soundsticks III last before you start noticing problems with them - I would really appreciate it.

I don't have either of the speakers that you mention, but hum can also be introduced by the RF energy generated by your wireless network or cordless phone systems. Of course, if you reside in a high density apartment complex, these RF sources may also be coming from your neighbors.
One simple solution, that is well known by HAM operaters is to employ RF chokes. These are simple devices that basically wrap around a wire to reduce the effects of RF and may be the only thing you need to solve this.
An example of one of these devices is the http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103222

  • 24" iMac with Bose Campanion III Speakers....strange noise?

    Dear All..
Not sure if I am posting in the right place, but perhaps someone can help me anyway. I have an iMac which has Bose Companion III speakers plugged in to it. I love them....absolutely amazing sounds. So much so that my neighbour has been down to me 3 times to complain about the noise.
Anyways, my problem is this. Every 3o minutes or so there is a loud noise comes from my iMac (Bose Speakers). It is just on for 1 split second but it's loud. It's like interference or something...not entirely sure. I just wondered if anyone else had experienced a similar sound when using external speakers.
I'd be delighted to hear what is causing it so I can fix it. I have absolutely no clue what so ever...
    Thanks in advance..

Do you have a GSM type of cell/mobile phone nearby? (like the iphone) - For whatever reasons, GSM phones emit some type of interference when they are searching for a signal, about to receive txt or calls are coming in.
i've had similar noises from my Harmon Karmon speakers attached to my iMac, I've also had the same types of noises from my car speakers/radio when my iphone is nearby. Just a thought, but if you have a mobile phone nearby, move it away and see if that noise persists..
    Good luck..

  • Can't Get Sound from Harmon Kardon Soundsticks External Speakers

My Soundsticks have worked fine on my eMac and iBook bow I can' get sound from them. The System Pref has only "Internal Speakers" as an output option. I've zapped the PRAM and fixed permissions with no luck.
What am I missing? They have worked before and all connections from speakers to the iBook headphone jack are fine. Earbuds work.
Any and all help is appreciated.

Do the speakers still work with the eMac?
Have you tried resetting the PMU?
Are you saying that earbuds work with the iBook, while the speakers do not? How can that be if the only output option is listed as internal speakers?

  • Just bought Harmon Kardon soundsticks III cannot get it to work on mac mini

    Hi
Just purchased the Harmon Kardon soundsticks very nice looking but does not work with my mac mini.  Connected it up as per manual instructions plugged it in line in cable to line in but no sound.  Went into system preferences to check to see Input (Line In) Output (Internal Speakers), is there something I am not doing correctly.  My other speakers which has decided to retire through old age was picked up perfectly.  Can anyone help.  Incidentally I am using an audio jack not usb.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Thanks for replying, I am unable to change to line out I have no options, the only way that I have been able to get t he speakers to work is by plugging into the headphone jack. Is it possible the sound card is broken?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated
    Thanks

  • This is driving me booloo - Harman Soundsticks and System Preferences

    Hello good people,
I am going insane with this, the keyboard volume controls only drive the internal speakers. I have to use the menu bar slider to adjust volume on the Soundsticks, which work fine btw. Although my output for Output and Sound Effects are both set to Soundsticks, the keboard still click-click-clicks the internal speakers up and down.
    System Preferences/Sound is configured correctly;
    Audio MIDI Setup looks OK
I have rebooted (This is a three week old problem)
I have powered down the (USB) Soundsticks
I have uplugged the Soundsticks USB and returned it
It isn't hardware because if I create a new user all is well.
    Arghhhhh. Please someone say, "Ah-Ha!"

    Hi, switchlight.
    1. Since the problem is "three week old" what changes did you make to your Mac, specifically your account, before the problem arose?
    2. An errant Startup or Login Item maybe the cause. Since this only affects your account, that implies a Login Item. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.
    3. The preferences for Bezel Services may be corrupted.
Bezel Services is the function which handles things like the display of the large white "Eject" icon on the screen when you press the Eject key, or the large Volume and Mute icons that appear when you press these keys.1. Trash file com.apple.BezelServices.plist in your Home > Library > Preferences folder.
    2. Empty the Trash.
    3. Either Log out then log in, or restrt your Mac.4. Try cheking the other preferences in your account with Preferential Treatment.
    Good luck!

  • Sound problem after repair

    Hi
I have just received my Imac back from being repaired (an uneven screen colour problem).
On turning on the machine it was obvious the sound was distorted, on investigation it seems only from the right hand speaker.
I suspect it will have to go back again, but just wondered if anyone has any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Steve

It is quite possible that Apple somehow damaged your iMac's speakers when you sent it in to be fixed. Apple makes you agree to a disclaimer saying that they are not responsible for damage to your Mac. But there is good news. There are many great speaker systems that you can get for a moderate price instead of paying to get your standard speakers fixed. I just bought Harman Kardon: Soundsticks III speakers and i love them. You get a large powerful subwoofer and 2 speakers with a surprising amount of volume. They come in around $169.95, which is not bad for the incredible, crisp, and clear sound I receive out of my speakers. I would eliminate the service charge by buying these speakers. That way, you not only have solved your speaker issue, but you have eliminated your pesky service charge. If you don't feel like buying these speakers, then look in system preferences under sound. Go to output and make sure that the balance is in the middle and not all the way to the left.

  • Harman-kardon speakers and various loud noises( mac mini)

My Harman-Kardon ball speakers, which have served me well from my old Cube days, are going loopy.
They have been happily USB connected to my 17" studio display (and powered from it) Recently, I've been hearing clicking noises, which can turn to a very loud 'rushing' sound if the computer has been active for more than an hour. I know some have had software issues with their sound systems due to 10.4 updates, but none reported very loud sounds. I came home yesterday to what sounded like an apartment fire alarm, it was that loud, but it was only my 'sleeping' computer. The noise ended when I pulled out the USB.
Could it be software? I don't want to buy new speakers if it might be. Or, time for knew speakers?-- if so, any advice? Happy New Year. Kevin

While it may not be all that helpful, I had some issues with an Altec lansing speaker set on my G5, where background noise was abnormally high almost all the time, and from time to time there would be rushing noises which grew very loud. It turned out to be a faulty USB hub, even though the speakers were not USB connected.
To troubleshoot your system, I would disconnect everything external bar the basic essentials, including any hubs or other devices, even the keyboard and mouse, and test the system that way. It would not be expected for software or MacOS itself to cause the sort of effects you describe.

  • How to test harman-kardon 4+1 speakers on Qosmio X305-712?

Hello -- when I open up the Realtek HD Audio Manager, the only option for "Speaker Configuration" is Stereo, but the system has the Harman-Kardon 4 speakers on the top and the subwoofer on the bottom -- that's the physical layout. Things sound good in stereo, but I can't tell whether the 4+1 speaker layout is working properly. Anyone happen to know what I can do to verify / test / find out? Is there a third-party testing program? Some other testing program from Harman-Kardon or from Realtek? Any other ideas? I have the latest sound drivers from the Toshiba web site for Windows 7 64-bit (Dolby, Realtek, and Speech I think are the three drivers in the "sound" category.
    System is a brand-new X305-712 Qosmio.
    Thanks in advance!

I own an X305-Q706 which also comes with Harman Kardon 4.1 speakers... and just like everybody else I'm very disappointed with this sound issue. A real let down.
Everything worked nicely on Vista. I decided to upgrade to Windows 7 and everything seemed to also work nicely until I tried out the sound. It was horrible. the Dolby Control Center was working but there were only two speakers available. With the sound expander and natural bass it sounded even worse, probably because it wasn't working with all 4 speakers. Not sure tho. I definitely get a great deal of bass from the woofer, probably what's wrong is that the Dolby Control Center doesn't work so well on 7.The sound just sucks when the Dolby features are enabled.
As for the speaker configuration, the only setup I have available is Stereo, no Surround or 4 speaker option. I could have sworn there was a 4 speaker choice on Vista. Also, I remember there was another program that came with Vista that's not included in 7, I think it was Sound Max or soemthing like that. It was a small tool to enhance the bass and treble besides the one from Dolby.

  • I can't get my Airplay speakers to work properly.

I bought two of the Harman Kardan Aura speakers to use at my residence.  I followed the directions but they do not seem to use airplay and my wifi network.  What am I doing wrong before I

Look inside the audio output port.  If there is a red light, that signifies that the internal switch is stuck in the output position.  Insert the headphone plug a few times.  If no success, blow in it real hard or use compressed air.  If still no success, jiggle a toothpick inside the port.  Last resort is a trip to the genius bar.
    Ciao.

  • Bose Companion 2 Series III doest not have sound on imac 10.8.5. Appreciate for advise. Thanks

    Hi All,
Would like to get advised here, bought a bose Companion 2 Series iii speakers. But it doesn't produce the sound if connected to my iMac ( 10.8.5 ) . Tried on my ipad and it work perfectly.
My troubleshooting : try to changed the sound setting at system preferences . Only internal speakers is available.
Appreciate all help and advise here. Thanks in advanced !
    Regards,
    Taufiqo

Try a pair of headhones in the headphone socket on the computer, if those work ok perhaps the plug on the Bose is not making contact properly. There is I think a switch in the headphone socket on the iMac and that sometimes sticks. Try putting the plug in and out a few times if the headphones do not work, it may free the switch.

  • Use Macbook Air with external speakers

Does anybody know if the Bose Companion 2 Series III Speakers can be used with an macbook air. If yes, is there any adapter needed or can I just plug the cable of the speakers into the MacBook Air headphone jack?

Naturally yes .. The problem is not the USB itsself, but the fact that original adapters from Apple (LAN and DVI) are made from a Thunderbolt connector, and they do not replicate the port where they are connected to.
Others party LAN adapters that comes on USB port are only 10/100 Mbs, whilst the Apple's one is a Gigabit. This is why I asked for some sort of Thnderbolt hub, or any other experinced advice..
I know that the MacBookAir comes with a good 802.11n integrated wireless, but as you know (or can imagine), when you are in the office a Gigabit connection is another movie, especially if you are tranferring large amount of data or are connected to huge centralized databases.
I was preferring a MacBook Air to the pro for it's monitor: for me a 1440x900 is much more better than a 1280x800 when I'm out of office. On the other hand, the version with the retina display is at the moment too expensive for my budget.
The final solution could be a MacBook pro 15", but I was preferring the 13" when in mobility, for its form-factor.

  • The New Mail sound won't play through SoundSticks

After many many years of using Eudora as my E-mail client, I have finally switched to Apple's Mail. So far, so good, EXCEPT for an inability to have Mail's "New Mail" sound play through my SoundStick USB speakers.
I should mention that I use a "dummy plug" plugged into the front headphone jack of my G5 so that I don't have to listen to the startup bong when I turn the computer on. This has never been a problem because I use SoundSticks for my audio and, since the G5 can't "see" the SoundSticks when you first turn the G5 on, no bong through the SoundSticks either. Once the computer is up and running, all audio comes out of the SoundSticks. This is true of all of the alert sounds my Mac makes too. Even the "Send Mail" sound (swooshing plane) plays through the SoundSticks as it should.
But the sound I have selected for "New Mail" (no matter which sound I select) just won't play through the SoundSticks. If I unplug the dummy plug from the headphone jack I can then hear the "New Mail" sound through the internal speaker. But I don't want to hear it that way (and I don't want to permanently remove the dummy plug either).
Why is it that Mail's "New Mail" sound is the ONLY bit of Audio that I've found that WON'T play through my SoundSticks?
    Help!
    Mark
P.S. A friend of mine is having the exact same problem with a G4 connected to SoundSticks. He says "HELP" too!

    Anyone?

    Hi Jerry,
As per your directions i located a service center near me.. I gave my laptop to the engineer stating him the problem with my laptop.. They made a Jobsheet regarding the Audio Device Issue. later on I called them to check the status of my laptop they told me that my laptop is repaired so i went there to recieve my laptop but to my astonishment the laptop wasnt repaired instead the engineer created another problem in my laptop.. he flashed the BIOS to upgrade it and he corrupted the BIOS while doing that and now my laptop wont BOOT.. so he assured me that he has ordered the part called "PCB" from singapore but when i demanded the exact part description and Part Number he failed give the details of the same.. The engineer gave me another Job sheet wherein he has mentioned about the previous Audio Issue but he has not updated this "BIOS" issue which he created.. So i called him again and told him to order the MotherBoard and he didnt give me any information about the part description or part number and the Jobsheet that he gave me nowhere mentions that he has ordered Motherboard from singapore.. Now Jerry this really is deficiency of service.. I gave my laptop in perfectly working condition only problem was with the sound device and what he did is.. he gave me completely dead Laptop and on top of that he is not givin me any information about the parts ordered.. I mean this is ridiculous.. and i want to complaint regarding this to Toshiba officials who have appointed there dealers and service centers all over the world..Jerry Please help me get this straight coz i have put my hard earned money to get this laptop..
    Thank you so much..
