Longstanding problem with Sleep causing Bomb

Hello,
iMac Intel Core 2 Duo running X v10.4.11
all updates applied whenever system says they're available
no peripherals
The problem is a simple one to describe: if I put the iMac to sleep manually all is well. If I leave the iMac to its own devices, it bombs out and when I come back to it, it's sitting there at the log-in screen waiting for me.
I'm a careful user. I rarely leave applications running but hidden, preferring instead to Quit them. (Old habit from pre-X days.) The exceptions are Mail and Firefox, which are always on but hidden when not in use.
Settings from relevant Prefs:
Energy Saver - Never and never (I've tried other settings)
Screen Saver - 15 minutes (I've tried it with this set to Never as well)
As you can see, the system should not be going to sleep at all. But whatever it's doing is causing a crash. And as mentioned above, I have tried other settings in the Energy Saver control panel with exactly the same result.
Can you suggest other info that might be helpful -- a crash log maybe? Or other options to try to isolate the problem?
TIA
Rob

Fascinating links you offered there!
I ran the scripts (mentioned in the first link) manually, using terminal. Here's some of the output...
blk-215-67-54:~ me$ ls -al /var/log/*.out
-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 288534 May 17 10:15 /var/log/daily.out
-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 612 Jun 11 2007 /var/log/monthly.out
-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 4040 Apr 10 10:57 /var/log/weekly.out
Which shows that 10.4.11 is trying to do the right thing, but was getting interrupted too often, especially with the monthly logs. When I ran the scripts the process took almost 5 minutes for all three. I'll try to remember to do that about weekly.
A also checked for disk fragmentation using a utility mentioned in the second link. I don't have to worry about that -- yet. And another utility reported that I have lots of RAM available, most of the time. I'd feel a lot more comfortable about replacing my half-gig chip with a ful gig if I could do anything with the half-gig one, but I guess they'rre worth nothing. Amazing!
Thanks again for your help and suggestions.

  • Problem with sleep button

I have problem with sleep button on my hp pavilion dv6-1354us When i press FN + F5 nothing happend. I reinstalled drivers for hp quick lunch buttons but the same problem.. Any solutions ? Thanks.

The operations of FN functions mainly based on the intrinsic working between the drivers and System BIOS.
If you already upgraded the Quick Lanuch Driver, then you may want to upgrade your System BIOS to the latest one in HP website to see if it can resolve the problem for you.
However, you need to be careful while upgrading your System BIOS.

  • Problem with sleep mode!!! Help!!

I have an Ipod nano and recently updated it. Since then, when my ipod automatically goes to sleep mode it no longer plays the music/audiobooks I listen to, when it would continue before. This is terribly inconvienent and pretty much goes against the whole point of listening to my ipod. HOW do I fix this?! I can only guess it was part of the update. Help

There is another thread about the sleep/wake mode issue as well. I really didn't think that this was my issue until you said that the update included a change in this specifically. I'm not sure why the headphones would start playing music through them until it was plugged in all the way--that would be a better way of preventing this problem and not causing this misunderstanding with the sleep/wake mode. But my issue is that I can not push the headphones in any farther (it does make that click sound and it is clear it is in)...but this problem hasn't been since I bought the nano, just since the update so I know it is related to this change. So basically I have to buy new headphones because of the update??? What I was doing before was unplugging the headphones from the nano in hopes the music would not start playing again in my bag. That seemed to be working fine. Isn't there another solution for people who have the headphones in as far as they can go and don't want to have to replace their headphones?

  • Problem with sleep mode in Win 7

    Hello Friends,
I have a great problem after Windows 7 updated itself. I have a laptop Toshiba Satellite L505D. When I close the lid, it should automatically go to the sleep mode. Unfortunately, only the screen is black and the laptop is still running, I have to shut it down then switch on again. Is it a problem with the 'battery driver'?Please, help me :)

Before you continue to wait for solution and waste your time back-up all your important data and reinstall OS again using HDD recovery installation - http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD1303440001R01.htm
After doing this you will have clean preinstalled and well working OS again.
The first thing you should do after OS installation is to disable automatic Windows update. Do it manually and install important updates only.

  • Satellite L505D - Problem with sleep mode in Win 7

It's me again, in last thread :
    "Hello Friends,

The sleep mode worked perfeclty for couple of days and it is again gone.. What is more when I try to enter the sleep mode I can't do anything on the notebook , it is still running on blank screen and the processors' fan is working on high speed. During these last days, when the sleep mode worked, windows didn't update itself..
I don't know what is happening.. :) Weird problem, isn't it?

It is not easy to say why this happen. In your last posting you wrote about some windows updates. Who knows what is wrong there.
If nothing helps, not even system restore and you want to use stand-by mode I recommend you to back-up all your data and install OS again using recovery mode.
With factory settings everything will be OK again but then be careful with updates.

  • Problems with sleep

    Hello.
I have a 20G ipod photo that will not go to sleep. Once I start playing (or even just click the center button), the ipod will stay on until the battery runs out. After I charge it, it will stay dormant until I turn it on, but it won't go to sleep either by holding down play/pause OR by selecting sleep from the menu (the backlight will turn off, but the display remains visible until the battery dies). Selecting sleep while a song is playing will pause the song, but doesn't actually put the player to sleep. If I get to the end of the album (back to the main menu), selecting sleep doesn't do anything. This is a problem that only recently developed (about 2 weeks ago when I updated to the latest version of itunes). Up until then, it was perfectly fine and would go to sleep using either method (menu AND play/pause).
I've already tried the 5 R's. In fact, I've restored the ipod twice (once using the latest version of the software, and once using the CD that came with the ipod). Neither restore produced any change (except for erasing all my songs). I'm hoping that someone has a helpful suggestion (other than replacing my ipod).
      Windows XP Pro

Normally, by pressing the play/pause key for a few sec will able to turn it off, but some how either a hardware or software problem stop it to turn it off.
Try to do a reset with the ipod connecting with a pc or ac charger, and pressing slect+menu keys until you see the apple logo should help.
If it is a software issue try the following:-
    1. do a restore
    2. do a restore with the iPod in disk mode
If it is a hardware issue (someone did mention about the humidity causing the problem, but I am not too sure about it), try to play your iPod till the battery drain out then have a full charge

  • Problem with sleep mode-T400

    Hey Guys,
I have a lenovo T-400, Windows Vista Home Basic 32Bit. When I put my computer to sleep and try to wake it up within 5 minutes, it wakes up but it doesn't wake up when the sleep time goes beyond 5 mins.
Here are the "few" things that I have tried:
    1) Installed Windows Xp Pro(Service Pack 2 and 3)
    2) Installed Windows Vista Home Premium( My own Copy)
    3) Installed Windows Vista Home Basic( Lenovo Recovery Disks)
    4) Installed Service packs for the above mentioned windows.
    5) Ran Lenovo System Update and updated all softwares(Including BIOS, Power Manager and Display Drivers)
    6) Ran Lenovo System Toolbox(which says everything is working fine)
    7) Called Lenovo Customer Care every other day for past one month-with no success)
    8) Turned Security Chip as "Active" in the bios( as suggested by someone in this forum)
    9) Spoke to Lenovo Customer Support to replace my laptop( but they say that it is not a hardware issue so they can't do anything about it)
    10) Visited many windows forums and tried installing windows hotfix meant to cure this problem but again no success.
    11) I have also tried matching settings of my laptop with another T400 laptop(in which sleep mode works), but no success.
12)Finally I was suggested by a friend to use this forum and that I would definitely get a solution here.
Please help me. I am a student and therefore the proper functioning of sleep mode feature is very important for me.
Also, My laptop is under warranty for one more year.

    Hi,
Have you check you settings in Power Manager. If you start it, switch to advanced mode and check inactivity settings for the power profile you are using  you will find that you can set times for shutting down certain things. Look if you have things set to shutdown after 5 minutes.
The obvious suspect would be that you have set the machine to hibernate after  5 minutes (although this seems very short). Once you have found the "suspect" change the time to verify that this is what causes the problem.

  • Problems with sleep in 10.5.8

So, I recently rebuilt my iMAC with Leopard 10.5.8. It had been working fine and I decided to load Snow Leopard, with somewhat disastrous results. (This thread is not about bashing Snow Leopard.) Anyway, I decided to retrofit the OS by performing a clean installation from the original installation disks provided with the model. I then uploaded all the new updates to 10.5.8. After I did all of this, I began having this problem:
When I cold boot the computer after being off for several hours, everything works fine initially. However, if I put the computer in sleep mode, or it times out to sleep mode, the problem starts. The computer will wake up normally, but if you attempt any mouse click, the computer begins a prolonged session with the spinning beach ball of doom. It may or may not resolve this in about 20-30 minutes (meaning whatever you clicked on, say, a drop down menu, will open). However, if you click on anything again, it begins the spinning again. I am unable to force quit applications during these sessions of the ball, if any are open. If I hard boot the computer, it cannot find this system folder and pops up the folder with a question mark icon. If you put the Leopard OS disk in the drive, it begins the boot process, but then it pops up the multi-language "Restart your Computer" message. This starts the process over again. If you leave the computer off for several hours, literally more than about 5 or 6, it boots normally again. You cannot get it to boot no matter what you do for several hours. It is making me a bit crazy.
Here is what I have tried so far:
    Resetting the NVRAM
    Fixing disk permissions
    Verifying the disk
Backing up the system folder and recopying a prior system folder with the same OS.
None of this has done anything to fix the problem. One thing I had noticed was that when the computer comes out of sleep mode, the icon for the airport is missing in the Finder bar. There is a space where it is supposed to be, but it is missing. I thought maybe the delay had something to do with the airport software, so I reinstalled it. This did nothing to fix the problem.
I need some help. Any suggestions beyond the ones I have tried would be appreciated. I can print out the verbose boot screen if you think that will help. I comes up with what seems like alot of targeting errors, but I am not that buff on Darwin. I bought my MAC so I wouldn't have to be.
    Thanks

    HI,
but then it pops up the multi-language "Restart your Computer" message.
That's what is referred to as a kernel panic.
Kernel panics can result from faulty RAM, outdated drivers, hard disk corruption, etc.
Go here for help to Resolve Kernel Panics
it cannot find this system folder and pops up the folder with a question mark icon.
A question mark on startup means your Mac can't find a System Folder to boot from.
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac

  • Problems with sleep mode in 10.4.7

I recently upgraded to OS 10.4.7 and now the sleep mode doesn't work like it used to. On all other versions of the OS, i'd put the computer to sleep and whenever I wanted to start it up again I'd wiggle the mouse or hit any key on the keyboard. Now, neither of those work. The system goes into sleep mode as usual, but the only way to wake it is by hitting the power button on the tower. Is this an OS bug? Is there a fix? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
    G4 MDD 1.42 Dual, 1.5GB RAM, 4 Hard drives (1 system, 1 media, 1 render, 1 elements)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

If your Mac happily goes to sleep but won't wake up--Hold down the power switch to force-reboot your machine and get it running again.
Don't worry-your Mac isn't narcoleptic. Its Open Firmware system or NVRAM (nonvolatile RAM) is likely corrupt, and your Mac can't remember how to wake up.
Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Command-Option-O-F key combo until you see a somewhat intimidating command-line display that ends with the Open Fimware prompt. Type the following line:
    reset-nvram
press the return key on your keyboard
    set-defaults
    press return
    reset-all
    press return
Your Mac will reboot. Once it's running, put it back to sleep to test. If the problem recurs your Energy Saver preferences may be the culprit. Delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file (go to Finder/Hard drive/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration)--don't worry, your Mac will regenerate a new one--and then restart to see if that rights the wrong.
Still did'nt work? Might be time to call AppleCare or see an Apple Genius or a technician.
    Cheers!

  • Problem with sleep mode reset

When my iPhone is unattached from the charging source and the phone goes into sleep mode it automatically, continuously resets itself and kills the battery. There is no way to take the phone out of this cycle unless it is plugged back into a charging source. Once plugged in the phone will automatically turn on and function normally. If the settings on the phone are changed so the phone does not enter a sleep mode the phone functions normally. If the phone is plugged into the power source and goes into sleep mode it does not reset itself, it functions normally. Can someone please help with this problem. I have already completely uninstalled and reinstalled the software via Apple consultant at 800-my-apple.

by "wake up" i mean not powering it up from start. but wake it from sleep. (push sleep button, so it goes dark. then push home button to wake it up again. try swiping up.)
This problem do not happend everytime.
can`t find out when it does.
    Thanks for awnsere.

  • Problem with sleep & log in screen - log in disappears & screen goes black

System: Mid 2009 MBPro 15". 4GB memory. 59.98 GB of 500 GB free. 10.7.2. External devices: Time Capsule, but not all the time.
My MacBook Pro has been developing this issue over the last several weeks. It is happening more and more frequently and I am afraid I may lose everything.
Another poster had a similar problem, which I have excerpted to save time (and he described it very well):
Scenario: Plugged into a power adapter, I close the lid of the machine to put it to sleep. When I open the lid to log back in, the screen comes up for approximately 4-5 seconds, then goes black. I cannot type fast enough to get logged in before it goes black. In fact, it seems to go black faster when I try to type.
If I close the lid while on battery power, everything works normally - although a couple of times today, it happened exactly as described above.
In addition, with the machine plugged in, I can close the lid, open it, wait for the screen to go black, UNPLUG it, and the screen comes back like nothing is weird. - again, this pretty much stopped working this afternoon.
I also noticed that when plugged in and the screen goes black, the white standby light never starts "breathing." When on battery power, however, it starts "breathing" normally.
Please help. My entire life (and career!) is on this machine.

It is not easy to say why this happen. In your last posting you wrote about some windows updates. Who knows what is wrong there.

  • Problems with sleep password

We upgrade to Mountain Lion the last friday, but we have a problem: after the mac goes to sleep, it doesn't accept the current password, but if we choose "change user" and select the logged one and type the password it works fine.  Does anybody can help us with that?  Thanks in advance...

If you're still having the problem; try removing that SSID from your Wireless Network List by selecting it (click the little > icon) & click 'Forget This Network'.
    Then, Rejoin it.
After that if you're still no good, I'd do a clean RESTORE & DO NOT restore any backed up settings when iTunes prompts you for that.
