Longtime Apple Tech with superdrive-inspired "techie-block"

Greetings all,
I'm an Apple Tech and have been working on Apples for 24 years now (scary to be doing ANYTHING that long!) and occasionally I come across something I can't solve right away. I never give up and find that it is sometimes tough without a current ASD disc (I gave up my recertification/Apple affiliation because my certs (4 of them) used to be $90 total for renewal, then they went WAY up. Now, I do my best and I do very well 99% of the time. I'm in that 1% right now and wondering if this is a problem any of you may have run into. I have a 2007 iMac Alum. I am upgrading for a client. Put a nice new 1TB HD in and replaced the superdrive with a Matshita that was much better than the Sony Optiarc that was in there. All went without a hitch, but the drive spins up at the beginning of startup, then lays there, refusing to power up/take in a disk. This is precisely what the old superdrive was doing. So, I tested the Optiarc original with an ATAPI connector and ATI to USB adapter and it works JUST FINE. So, I'm thinking logic board, but that seems like an odd thing for the logic board to do. Could it be the PMU malfunctioning and not giving power to the drive after initial power up? System profiler sees NOTHING with both old and new drives. ANY help/experience would be appreciated, folks.
Sincerely,
Jeff

You've narrowed the issue to the highly integrated South Bridge I/O device and disk controller, or to it's path to the internal optical drive connector. The presence of disc spin and lack of logical recognition by the System Profiler application suggests that this is a logical issue with the drive controller itself, and not one involving power. There is likely no evidence of damage to the logic board at all.
In such cases, replacement of the logic board is in order. Out of warranty exchange of such logic boards is a relatively expensive proposition, though the exchange is about 60% of the cost of an outright purchase of such a module.

Another thing to consider, a free to use download (donationware) is
MacTracker; a small data base of Apple and Macintosh product specs.
If you don't already have it, see: http://www.mactracker.ca to download.
Some online manual sites had unauthorized copies of protected works
and those sites were pulled from the internet; but they had service
manuals in pdf for many models of computers. You may be able to get
the official versions of pdf manuals through a subscription service for
an annual fee; this may require searching and asking questions. It may
also require an IT budget you may not have, to get a Mac-only archive.
At one point I was given some technical support information to trouble-
shoot my own ailing under warranty Apple computer(s) and the information
is very helpful, when you have a need for the details they contain.
I was careful to use them for non-invasive troubleshooting only.
One older online source appears to have ftp:// links, but I was never
able to make them work. The site may not have valid content or could
be somehow blocked; so if you find such a site by searching for older
Apple Manuals online, it may not yield anything. Or it may be illegal.
Some of the low-end RAM chips can be problematic; I found at least
one to add major issues in my iMacG4 and made it hard to diagnose
another major hardware problem. Tossing the cheaper RAM (at retail
was higher cost than decent RAM) was the best thing; got a better one.
There should be a little information on boot ROM (firmware) per model in
the MacTracker database you can use offline. You may need to know more
about the use of Open Firmware in Macs. Hope this helps some.
PS: for a time, you could get tech manuals on CD from places
such as http://www.applerescue.com/ (they have OS installers
on disc for sale there, primarily) and also a search of the web
may get you a source of tech books for repair service.

You need to select the "Manage My Account" link and not the "Reset Your Password" link.  Once you use the "Manage My Account" it will ask you to log in and in there you should see which email addresses are verified.

I'm afraid this is by design.
You cannot Airplay Mirror a DVD using DVD Player - Apple block  screen mirroring of certain image data which might be protected.
I've a funny feeling Airplay mirroring can potentially be interecpted and decoded so someone could potentially copy the video stream (which would be poorer than DVD anyway).

    Anyone else tried this?

I don't think everyone with a Mac is having basic problems with Photoshop 2014.1.
What exact versions do you have in each case?  Is your updated version 2014.1, while the "new customer" version is 2014.0?  Choose Help - System Info to see.
Sounds like, given your specific system, you may want to try a full clean and reinstall, or maybe a downgrade to 2014.0 until 2014.1.1 or 2014.2 comes out.  I think the older versions are available through the Creative Cloud application.

I have a Lucid 2 LG.  I have been having trouble with insuffient storage.  I have a 8G phone and have spent hours with Tier 2 tech trying to move info from the internal storage to the SD card with no luck,  When I go to storage in the settings it states that over 4 gigs is for Misc?  System data takes up over 4 gigs.  No one can tell me what system data consist of.  So My question is does anyone know what system data is?  I am assuming I have a 8 gigphone but can only use 4 gigs???

System data is the OS or operating system.  That is where the recovery stays separated from the rest of the storage so that it doesn't get corrupted.  It is not accessible and non-movable.

Where do I go to get on live chat with a support tech?

I would do this, but I am unable to download anything to my iphone.  We restored to factory settings our old 3gs for our kids.  In the Itunes app, it shows all of my songs that I have purchased or uploaded.  I press on the cloud for it to download to the phone.  It shows the bar downloading, but, when i go to the music app to play the song, it says no content.  I have updated the phone to ios 1.6.3 and restored it, etc.  Nothing seems to work.  I have even purchased a new song on this device to see if it would work.  It does the download thing but then it does not go to the music app.  It shows no content.  Very frustrated!

This is going to sound dumb but I just got a call from someone claiming to be with Microsoft Windows tech dept. Apparently something malicious attacking my computer.  I hung up because Mac doesn't use Microsoft Window Operating System - right?  I have Mac OS X.  I have loaded Microsoft Office 2011.  Can that allow something malicious or is this guy a scammer and I was right to hang up???

Actually you can install Windows on your MBP via Bootcamp.
You should have kept the individual on the phone for as long as you can tolerate.  The time he wastes with you is time he cannot spend scamming an innocent victim.
You can always politely ask the caller to hold while you 'answer the front door' or the like and just set down the phone and go about your business.  The caller will eventually hang up.
But your analysis was 100% correct.
    Ciao.

  • I just got an eMac G4-1Ghz/256/80/SuperDrive/56k/220v the problem is, it's stuck on theLoading Screen everytime i turn it on it wont go any further it's stuck on the Gray Apple logo with whiteBG and the loading icon that keeps circling any ideas?

i got this emac from my uncles friend, and they said it's still working so i was likeok lemme see. and when i turned it on i was like "nice it really is working" but right after it went to the loading screen (Gray apple logo with a whiteBG and the loading icon that keeps circling) it wont go any further.. it just stays like that forever.. OMG any ideas???? thanks

Hello, do you have the Install Discs for it?
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • 7th generation iPod nano flashes apple logo with a white screen and won't play.  What is wrong with it?

I have a 7th Generation iPod Nano that started flashing the Apple logo with a white background.  I have tried Diagnostics, restoring the iPod and even resetting it.  At one point it was in a Restore Loop.  I'm thinking maybe it has a virus but reading further says that I may be missing one of the drivers.  Is there any way to fix it without taking into a tech?? Please help...miss my music!!

    Hi jkjuarez2012,
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like your iPod nano is only showing the Apple logo with a white background, and you've tried many good steps including resetting and restoring the device. I know I'd miss my music in this situation.
Make sure that you followed the steps in this article when restoring your iPod:
Restoring iPod to factory settings - Apple Support
If the issue continues after restoring, your iPod nano may need to be serviced. You can use this link to find out more about iPod service:
If the issue is still not resolved, please read this information on servicing your iPod.

  • We have an older apple computer with safari version 5.1.10 and snow leopard version 10.6.8 do you have something compatable?

Does adobe make a version for a older apple computer, with a safari version 5.1.10 and snow leopard 10.6.8 .

Flash Player is still supported on that os/browser combination (see Adobe Flash Player | Tech specs).  You can download the latest version from http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer.

  • Apple Configurator with 12 iPads

Hi I have 12 ipads in my department. I have 3 iTunes accounts which are assigned to the iPads - basically 4 to each account. Can I use Apple configurator with several different iTunes accounts to manage these iPads or should I keep it managed through iTunes??

I have the same issue I think.  Whenever I am trying to update or configure them they will all go to the iTunes symbol and I have to take each one out of the charging station and manually configure them with my MacBook.  Other times it just wiped them clean and then I just have to load the profile.  It is hit or miss.  When it works...it works great...when it doesn't....well it just doesn't.  I was told by our tech department that it should have an update coming this summer.

  • Apple USB External SuperDrive

Just purchased Apple USB External SuperDrive to use on MacBook Pro who's internal drive is kaput! Running OS X v.10.8.5 on it... have tried plugging USB into two different USB ports and the drive will not take any DVDs/CDs, having tried numerous ones... pushing them into the SuperDrive does nothing... they will only go so far into the drive and then stick part-way out, i.e., not mounting... have tried numerous DVDs/CDs... restarting the Mac with SuperDrive connected...
Other devices work with the USB ports
Is there something else I should be doing or did we get a bum drive?

    Is it this drive?:

    MacBook Pro with Retina display
    MacBook Air
    iMac (late 2012) and later
Mac mini (late 2009) and later
    Mac Pro (late 2013)"
If yours isn't in this group then it won't work. Actually there's a way to make it work but it requires messing w/ things that can get quickly complicated.
    Then go w/ OWC:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/optical-drives/
They are very knowledgeable and helpful. Call them to insure compatibility. Cheaper also and if there's a problem easy to return.
Definitely not as cool looking, more's the pity!

I am told to run DISK UTILITY as I get the "No Mountable File System" error for EVERY DMG I try to install. (Install works fine on my 2nd MacAir so the DMG is not damaged.) However DISK UTILITY does not fix this issue.
I am trying to boot to Disk Warrior 4.2 on my Apple MacBook Air SuperDrive. Holding C down for 10 minutes on reboot does not work. Selecting DVD SuperDrive using the REBOOT | OPTION KEY option does not work.
    Any ideas?
    My thanks!

Sorry, but the current Disk Warrior CD will not boot the recent MacBook Air models. See:
    http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/support.html
The only way to run DW on your system would be to boot the MBA from an external hard drive with your MBA's version of Mac OS X and DW installed on the drive. IF you don't have one available you can use, if there's an Apple Store in your area they may be able to help. Otherwise, you may have to reformat your MBA's hard drive.
    Regards.
