Looking at a new computer

So  my HP PAvilion zd8000 can't handle the AVCHD format. The video skps and the audio is messed up and I have been told that I should get a new desktop/laptop with a new configuration preferably a dell instead upgrading my laptop.
Any suggestions on what type of setup would be appropriate? My only requirement is to that my computer has to be able to handle AVCHD Files.

Dell or HP, pick your poison, within a given price range they will be quite similiar in price/performance.
For many the choice in HW vendors comes down to past experiences with their box or post sales support.
I've leaned towards HP as a preference, and usually purchase online via their website (www.hpshopping.com).
I also like the fact that HP with sell their box with PE as a software purchase add-on. They test in-house and state the software will run in any of their configurations that are sold with the PE add-on purchase.
Every PC I bought from them online with PE as an add-on, ran out-of-the-box with no issues.
I might be wrong, but I think Dell may also sell PE as an add-on, but I'm not sure.
Back to your AVCHD issue, many recommend at least a Quad Core with 4 gig as a bare MINIMUM.
If you have the bucks, I would go with an i7Core, 6 gig of ram or better, and as much Drive storage as your wallet will bear...

  • I'm looking for a new computer.

I'm looking for a new computer. one that can handle games well. I'm not sure if I should get a destop or a laptop. I like the facial reconzation and at least 4 usb ports, and the numbers on the right side. I like this one alot:
     http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=pcat17005&type=page&_requestid=48256
    and for destops:
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+Pavilion+Elite+Desktop+/+AMD+Phenom%26%23153%3B+II+Processor+/+8GB+...
If you have a destop or laptop to sugest it must meet these standards for me:
    more than 5 usb ports
    hdmi
    500 or more giggz
    windows 7

    @sweetpea79;
There is a few problems with your post.
Your claim that the asus laptops will "play any game out there that is compatible" is not very helpful.  Many games will *NOT* be compatible with either of those laptops.  Stating they will "play any game out there that is compatible" is meaningless.   That exact statement applies to every computer sold, latop, desktop, or netbook.
Your claim that "desktops are boat anchors" that are "not very protable" are humorous at best.  When it comes to gaming and game compatibility, a desktop will always be a better choice than a laptop.
Your anti-virus recommendation is not very useful.  There are other anti-virus products on the market that are tested to be better than Trend Micro.  No solution will give perfedct protection.  To claim that all other anti-virus solutions will leave the user unprotected is completely false.
You claim you were "hacked" because your "cursor moved" without you moving it, when this phenomenon is a know issue with the Microsoft audio control bar; it is enabled by default and can cause the issue you describe with certain sound cards.
Your claim that Norton allowed you to be infected is also misleading.  Chances are whatever infection you had would not have been caught by Trend Micro, either.  FWIW, Norton has won far more editor choice awards and top ratings from reviewers than Trend Micro.  I am not arguing which is better...just stating a fact.
In short, although you are a fan of Asus laptops and Trend Micro, it does not mean either is the best choice for the OP.

  • Looking for A New Computer

    Hey all,
Like the subject says, I'm in the market for a new desktop machine but after spending several days looking at various sites, I think I'm more confused than informed. So if anyone who knows a bit about computers could give me a hand, I'd really appreciate it.
    Here's what I'm looking for:
My price range is around $1000-$1500. Ideally I'd like to stick more in the lower range but I'm willing to go even higher if it's for a good machine.
I'm a digital artists so I run some decently heavy duty applications like photoshop, illustrator, poser, etc.
I do most of my work with a tablet so I need something that doesn't lag or freeze up. (This is very important.)
I tend to run a lot of programs at the same time so something with a lot of memory and a fast processor would be ideal.
I create big files so a large amount of storage space would be good as well, maybe even an extra hardrive specifically just for art files.
    An awesome video card.
I don't play games very often but something that plays games wells and handles 3D would be nice too.
No Macs please. I had to use those at school and I'm just not a fan.
A fair number of USB ports.
Something I can update would be nice. I've had the same computer for the past 6 years so I like being able to replace parts whenever the situation    calls for it.
I think those are the most important things so to recap:
    $1000-$1500 Price range
    Can handle big/multiple programs
    A lot of memory
    Fast processor
    A lot of storage space
    Good graphics card
    Plays video games decently
    No Macs
    Extra USBs
    Updatable
Sorry if that's a a lot of information, but I just wanted to make sure I gave as much as possible. If there's anything I didn't answer, please let me know. And thanks in advance, I just want to make sure that if I spend the money, it's for a worth while machine.

  • Buying a new computer, what to get?

(Warning: Long post ahead; I'm quite thorough =p )
I've been around town; Best Buy, Staples, C. City, Dell etc. looking for a new computer. My current computer is only 2 years old and it's already atrociously obsolete (only 448 megs RAM), and rather than upgrading I decided to just buy a new one.
Well, the problem is that at all the places I go, their definition of a "gaming" computer is some monster powerhouse that can play games and end world hunger all at once; usually costing well over 1000 dollars. I'm 16, I don't have $1.5k to spend on a computer. My budget is <$600.
Another problem is the stock video cards. They're almost always "NVIDIA 6150" cards... my current computer already has one of those, and I'd like something better (preferably something that Spore supports, since that's my goal), unless it can do more than I'm giving it credit for.
So, here's what I would like at the lowest possible price.
-A moderate gaming computer; does not need to be able to play Xbox 360/Wii/PS3 graphic games (eg: Call of Duty, Fallout 3, etc.). Should be able to play other games well, however (eg: Spore, World of Warcraft, etc.). I would assume a good Nvidia card above 6150 (not 7100 though) will fit this purpose okay. Games don't have to be played on the absolute highest resolution, etc. but the lagging/skipping/stalling of my current computer makes them unplayable, and I don't want that to happen.
-4 gigs RAM, as that seems to be most common. 3gigs will do, though.
-Any size HD, but 300gig+ preferred
-Processor can be Duo or Quad, but power should be 2.4ghz+ (total). AMD or Intel preferred, but whatever I can get will do.
The rest, I really don't care about. I've got all the accessories (keyboard, mouse, monitor, speaker, etc.) so bundles aren't needed.
I'm not up for building my own computer as I don't have the time, skill, or resources to do so. In regards to the video card, all the stock computers I've found have the following:
    -Nvidia 6150
    -Nvidia 7100
    -Intel GMA 3100
-Radeon 3450 (rare, and usually expensive)
If need be, I suppose I can buy my own card, but I have no idea how to install it or even if I COULD. (I've heard some cards are integrated so you can't just swap them)
So really, what I'm asking is for recommendations; either specific products or places where I could get something like this. Or if any of the computers I've found would do what I want anyways, and I'm just not understanding the power they have (I've never done anything on a computer with more than 1gig RAM). So if any of the "stock" computers that fit the above description will do what I want, that's excellent. I'm just not sure if I'll need to be customizing stuff.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hey!
Don't think of this of being rude.. But there is a really nice gaming computer that came out a couple of weeks ago. Its the New Gateway FX. It runs about $1,299.99 I believe. Now don't let that scare you away. This comes with a HD Radion 4850 in it. A really nice Graphics card. Not only that it has the NEW Intel i7 Quad Core, that runs at 2.6 Ghz. I have done many Services on the FX, and its a fast computer, and the thing is it can go even faster. It holds a 3gb of ram, With a 750 GB Hdd? And 2 HDD spots in the front. For even more space! Also has a couple of other neat features, but I think you got the point.
If I had the money this is the computer that I would buy. Also with your budget, Best Buy is having the 18 Months finance with 0% interest rates. I would do that but I have to be 18 for a credit card >.>. Hope this helps =]

  • TS4062 how to Wifi Sync with new computer

My iphone wants to wifi with a computer that no longer exists.  how do I get it to look for a new computer?  I teathered it to my main computer and authorized it.  Still looks for wrong computer.  ***

    iDevices are not backup devices.
Attempts to sync an iDevice to a new computer will result in the media on the device being removed and replaced with the media from the new computer (i.e. nothing).
Copy the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer.

  • Itunes library cannot locate files on new computer

I've attempted to transfer my itunes library from one computer to another; however, when I click on the music, I get an error message:  "the file for the song cannot be used because the original file cannot be found".  I attempted to import the library using Homesharing initally, then attempted to transfer it via an external harddrive.  When the computer is connected to the external harddrive, the music will play.

I know how infuriating it can get and how you start to doubt your own sanity. The best thing is to go back to basics.
    1) Locate your actual music files.
If you look on your new computer, by default your music should be stored in my music\itunes\itunes media\ if you cannot see folders in there which contain your music it is fair to assume the media isnt on your computer. I tend to suspect that the music is on your external hard drive which is why it plays when you have that plugged in.
If you find the music on your hard drive I would go into preferences in itunes and tick the option in advanced that I mentioned previously, then, in itunes go to file and "add folder to library". If you cannot see the menu bar which contains "file - edit - view - controls - store - help"   you may need to press ctrl B to show it, alternatively if you click on the little box in the top left corner of the itunes screen and drop the menu and select "show menu bar"
So now when you press the add folder to library simply browse to where your actual music files are, find the folder which has all you r music etc in it and then click "select folder" in the bottom right of the window.
If you have done all that correctly and have ticked the "Copy media to itunes folder when adding library" option in "edit / preferences / advanced" your music should be copied from your external hard drive into the itunes folder and all should then work properly.
Fingers crossed lets hope thiat works for you.
Just a thought - if that creates duplicate entries in itunes then I would select all your music in itunes and delete it, then go through the above again so you only have the one set of music.

  • Moved to a new computer, but iTunes looking for songs at old folder locatio

My old pc crashed, so I copied all the songs from my old hard drive to my new machine. Now my iTunes shows 2 versions of each song and 1 version says it can't find the file. Does anyone know an easy way to have iTunes delete all the songs it can't find.

The best way to migrate an iTunes library to a new computer is simply to copy the entire iTunes folder from the old computer into the <User's Music> folder of the new one, then install iTunes. It only becomes more complicated if the media folder is split out of its usual place as a subfolder of the iTunes library folder, in which case the media folder needs to be placed on the same path that it had previously or the library needs to be made portable before it is copied across.
If whatever your brother has done leaves the iTunes Media folders looking the same on both machines then copying over the library files and Album Artwork folder from the old iTunes folder to the new one should fix things, otherwise just do the whole process over.

  • My husband's Ipod touch classic doesn't show up in devices or on our account in our new computer.  I've looked at many tutorials without any luck.  We can't transfer any new music to his device.

I have tried everything to add my husband's ipod to our new computer in Itunes.  I have looked at many tutorials with no luck.  Iexplorer allowed us to add all of the music from the Ipod classic to Itunes.  However, I tried to add his device with a new library with no luck.  For some reason, his Ipod isn't on my account in Itunes even though the majority of music he has purchased has been with my account. I can't figure out how to add his Ipod to my account.  We have authorized the computer for his device. I want to make sure he has his own library because I don't want all of his music on my Ipad. Also, Itunes is updated. This is driving me crazy, and anybody who can help me will be very appreciated.

If it shows up in iTunes:
What happens when you try to sync?
Was the iPod previous synced to another iTunes library/computer?
Have you successfully synced from this iTunes library/computer before?
Do the songs play in iTunes?
Do you have the right boxes checked to sync?

  • Looking for suggestions for a new computer

    Hello!
I am curently an undergrad student with a 4(ish) year old Toshiba Satellite A505. It has an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU Processor (P7350 @2.00 GHz), 4GB RAM, and a 64-bit opperating system. I bought it with Windows Vista on it and still use it. No changes have been made to the opperating system or other specs on the computer. It runs fine but is getting a little slow and I know that it is getting behind on opperating system capablilities and harddrive capabilities.
I am planning on going on to Grad school within the next 2 years. I know that is a long time to be looking for a computer now, but I need to start saving and thought that I could find at leas ta ball park of what I will be spending and what to look for when I finally get around to buying a new computer. I will be studying archaeology and will be using programs like AutoCAD as well as running my own reasearch, which will include a lot of image editing, storage, and use. I will also probably be using a lot of data and database programs as well as writing many, many very long research papers and doing many presentations. Not to mention everyday student use for note taking and studying. I also like playing The Sims (FYI). I want something that can be used for perosnal use as well as a research tool so I would like to have something that can hold up to frequent "light" use and frequent "heavy" use. I love my Toshiba. It has been a wonderful computer and wouldn't mind staying with that company. However, I'm not afraid of going to a different company as long as it isn't Apple. I wouldn't mind using a Mac, but with all the research I plan on doing I would like to have a computer that is as compatable with the University system as possible.
In summation, I'll need something with a lot of power, a lot of space, and the ability to run both light and heavy programs like AutoCAD and photo/data editing and storage software as well as being suited for normal student and personal use. No Macs.
    Thank you!

Both computers I would like to suggest are both out of stock at the moment due to the holidays. However, both of these would be excellent choices considering we are talking about heavy cpu usage.
I believe both of these are possible heavy hitters for you.
I personally own this machine so can claim that this machine should meet your every need without a hiccup.

  • I downloaded Lion on my iMac.  It apparently cleaned out the hard drive.  Nothing shows up from before.  It looks like a brand new computer.  It is backed up on Time machine.  Any idea of why this happened and suggestions on restoring?  Thanks.

I downloaded Lion on my 4 yr old iMac.  The download stalled at the last minute so I clicked "CANCEL".  When it was restarted, Lion was there, with no apparent option but to go ahead and install so I assumed it was okay.  Didn't transfer data from "another computer" when prompted - assumed it would transfer from that computer.  It apparently cleaned out the hard drive.  It looks like a brand new computer.  None of my apps, programs,  files, or thousands of photos.   It is backed up on Time machine, but it's a sickening sight.  Any idea why this happened and suggestions before restoring?  Thanks.

I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.
See Pondini's page for more explanation:   What are Local Snapshots?   http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.
