  • Looking for good resources/articles

    Hi All
I know this isn't exactly the right place, however I know the collective knowledge and wisdom in this forum is great, so here goes:
Can anyone point me to some good articles relating to digital noise when shooting HD? At the university I work I am constantly having to defend the post-production workflow because of digital noise in our productions. I put it down to lack of light when shooting but, for some reason, I have a hard time getting my message across. So, any good articles on this topic will be greatly appreciated.
We record on P2 using the Panasonic 202/502 (think they might be called 201/501 in the states).
    Have a splendid day!
    cheers

Google. Look for VIDEO GAIN and SIGNAL TO NOISE RATIO
Noise is created when gain is applied. This cannot be prevented, it is physics. A weak signal is boosted by artificially processing the pixel information. Deep black areas have noise in them—random sparkly pixels—because the sensors do that when they are not stimulated properly by having light fall on them. when the signal to noise ratio is high, the noise is hidden in the signal, suppressed. When the amplification is applied to the signal, the SNR goes way down because those random sparklies get bigger and brighter.
I blame your professors and teachers. Your kids have failed to learn how to light because their cameras have been sold to them as either "super low-light capable" or they have a gain switch on them that might not include the option to be manually over-ridden. Simple education in proper shooting technique includes using lights and how to read a light meter. What's the world coming to?

  • Looking for instructions

    Hello,
I am looking for knowledge base article or a manual that will help me through the process of transferring the open directory master from a 10.4 server to a a new 10.5 server. We currently have OD running well on a 10.4.10 xserve but will be adding a new xserve to the domain soon. That server will have considerably more horsepower so we plan to move the OD master job to it.
The apple migration guide says to archive the info and then import it into the new computer which seems like an old fashioned way of doing business.
Isn't there a way to promote a replica holder and demote the master? If there is I can't find it on the Apple support site-hence this plea for help.
    Thanks

    Hi
Master/Replica relationships have to be the same versions. They won't function as Master/Replica otherwise. Unless the new Server is going to be exactly the same in terms of DNS then archiving the LDAP database is probably not an option.
A lot of this would depend on what you want to do with the older server and where your networked home directories are based.

I looked at Bento and at first glance I think it would do everything I want it to do, then I saw a review or something from a customer that indicated the information in Bento could not be exported (say to send out a mailing).  I may want a program that can do that as well, is there one out there? If not it does look like Bento will work.  When you save a picture to a customer in Bento can you open it up full size?

  • Looking for volunteers to write application comparison articles

There are a number of "what's the best?", "easiest to configure", and "lightest", questions that come up frequently in the forums: Image viewer, PDF/document viewer, tiling window manager, floating window manager, desktop environment, text editor, IDE, web browser, terminal emulator, ETC. And while there's very good documentation on some of the individual pieces in the wiki, there isn't as much on comparisons between them.
In order to help keep the forums from an endless cycle of repetition, we're looking for volunteers to add some application comparison articles to the wiki. The entries don't need to be comprehensive on individual programs, and there should be every attempt made to not unnecessarily duplicate what's already been written. Basic information on things like keyboard friendliness, lightness, text and/or graphic mode, and the like is encouraged though.
We'd like to use this page as the starting point:
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Common_Apps
Don't use it for the comparisons themselves, but put a link to the articles under the correct category. The page is already good as it is, although it needs both more entries and to be linked to in the Archwiki Table of Contents for higher visibility (please).
Of course the articles are not for flame wars or opinions. It's a place where users can go to get a good general view of how apps stack up against each other.
Report back any progress made here.

There's going to some gray areas, but most it falls into categories. For instance, having separate pages for IDE and text editors is probably silly. Vim is both a text editor and an IDE depending on how it's set up. So is Geany, SciTE, Texmaker, Emacs, ETC. Putting them all together makes sense.
The two categories of window managers (tiling and floating), as well as DE deserve their own pages. What do you do with E17 then? It's as much a DE as it is a WM. If ended up in the floating WM page, as well as the DE page, that'd be fine. And no, it's tiling module doesn't make it a tiling WM.
PDF viewers and document viewers should probably be lumped together because almost all document viewers can view PDF files. Image viewers should get their own page. Same with terminal emulators.
Stuff like GIMP, Inkscape, and Blender probably don't need a comparison page. Even though other stuff can duplicate parts of their functionality, they're pretty much special programs in the Linux world.
Why three pages for WM/DEs ? Put them all in one page, but separate tables or whatever.

  • Looking for Good Article/Explanation on Timezones

    Hi,
I'm looking for answers about timezones and if anyone could point me to a really good artilce I'd appreciate it. Here's the type of thing I'm looking for...
I'm writing an application that creates records in a file. The records are timestamped as to their creation. The catch is that the timestamp may not be the default timezone depending on the user's preference. I know the user's UTC offset and whether they use daylight saving time. The problem comes in when trying to figure out which timezone id to use to create the new timezone and set it in the calendar object. For example, if I know that the GMT offset is -7*60*60*1000, I get back 7 possible ids. I don't know anything about the rules for daylight saving time for the user, only if they use it or not. How do I know which id to choose? The users can be from anywhere in the world.
    Thanks for any help.

Yes, I'd thought about just having the user set their
timezone (similar to the forum Settings). However,
even this forum settings causes some confusion.
There's two options for a number of timezones. What
differentiates them? The daylight saving rules are
important to know and the list of timezones doesn't
indicate this in any way. This list doesn't show all
available timezones either (as previously mentionted,
there's seven timezones for GMT -0700).Then you would have to do a better job than Sun did, wouldn't you? After all if you are going to be interpreting the answer you get, you had better ask a clear question. If you want to know the list of timezones actually supported by Java, then examine the source code for the TimeZone class. You can also search Google for "time zones" for links that will keep you busy for weeks learning the arcana of time zones around the world.

  • Looking for OTN Article re DB triggers

    Hello,
I was wondering if someone can point me to the correct location.
I am looking for an artice that has appeared on OTN that described how to implement certain functionality within database triggers.
Specifically it covered such things as if a parent record was updated and you wanted a child/children records to be updated at the same time, it described how this could be done using SQL/PL-SQL code.
Can anyone help? I think it has appeared within the last year.
    regards,

And as previously mentioned, a snapshot requires all parent snapshots to be useful for data recovery. What? btrfs snapshots are independent -- they do not require parent snapshots for recovery. In fact, once a snapshot has been taken, it's literally indistinguishable from the original. You can remove/change/burn with fire the original and the snapshot will continue to operate. That's the whole point of snapshots. :)Doesn't BTRFS use copy-on-write technology? As far as I understand, creating a snapshot does not involve any copying of data and as such is similar to a restore point marker. When mounting a snapshot or subvolume, any file system changes are recorded in metadata, which contains information about what data blocks were changed and the differential data itself. Snapshot and subvolumes are independent files systems and have their own copy of a B-tree. When modifying data, such actions are again recorded and affect only the currently mounted volume. But unless data was modified, there is still only one copy of a data block on disk and hence the snapshot won't help if such data is lost due to a bad disk block or disk error.
SAN and virtualization products use similar snapshot technologies. As far as I'm aware, this is great for undoing data changes by deleting snapshots or mounting different versions of subvolumes, but its not a solution for full data recovery and not a suitable solution to recover Oracle databases.
Is this incorrect, please let me know where I'm mistaken. Thanks!

  • Looking for help - Company is going to Mobile Asset Management service that does not support BB - especially BB 10.

    Hello,
I am looking for ideas/help. I currently have a BB Z10 (10.1.0.2039) with Verizon Wireless.  The company has a BB Enterprise Server for older devices (I previously was on that).  I bought a Z10 several months ago and have been connecting to the corporate network through Lotus Traveler. They do not have and will not implement a BB 10 Enterprise Server. Some in IT informed that if the company used the BB software they could manage all devices..... not accepted.
All my contacts, calendar, and company email is funneled to the BB Hub.....
So my company is implementing a Mobile Asset Management Service that I have to sign up for (Airwatch?).  They only support Android and IPhone.
Will future versions of the BB OS support Android Apps.... Soon (I have less than 2 weeks)
I have read where it is possible to put the device in development mode to run Android Apps.  I don't know if that will work with this and have no idea how stable the phone is in that mode. I travel internationally so I don't know how a development mode would work overseas. Any thoughts?
I like my Z10 but will need to switch to keep functionality if I can't find a work around
    Any assistance ????
    Thanks for any help.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
BB10 devices have the ability to run .apk apps via special methods. Development Mode is used only for installing the app...not for normal operation. So you install (side-load) the app in Development Mode, then go back to normal mode for normal operations.
If a .bar file for the .apk app already exists somewhere, you can side load it to the BB10 device and see if it works or not. If there is not yet any .bar file, there is an app called SideSwype that can convert many .apk apps to .bar and install it to your device.
    Good luck!

    Hi
I have discovered that my question above is a non-question. A user triggered by looking at the below article about Illustrator 2014 cc 17.0.2

He had recently upgraded from wht we now know is 18.0 to 18.1 which is the latest version. He read the above artic
le and supposed that it was a bug fix release for his version - because the v17 ov18 number is not often displayed. It is usually just 2014 CC.
I have asked him to post a bug report about Adobe Illustrator CC 2014.1

  • Hallelujah, finally disabled OOPP. I use Firefox 9.0.1 and will not upgrade to anything that ignores my settings. Been looking for this info for years!

As soon as Firefox came out with OOPP, I immediately asked how to permanently disable it and had a Firefox developer straight-up lie to me and say it couldn't be done without downgrading. Thank GOODNESS for the instructions on https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/713600?page=1 Finally, finally I have excised the hated OOPP!
I run Firefox 9.0.1 and will not upgrade, ever, unless I see signs that Mozilla has radically altered its development direction and discarded most of the boneheaded, broken, anti-user development that has gone into versions more recent than Firefox 1.x. Actually making your mission statement more than an empty promise might be a good place to start.
Let's see...anything else? Oh yeah, any developer who advocates overriding or ignoring user settings, or taking control away from the user, should be kicked off the team. (and investigated as a possible Government mole, but that's a lot to ask for). I hear Konqueror and Safari are looking for new devs. It gets old fast when you try to get support and instead get haughty "You're doing it wrong, stop doing that" responses. I'm doing exactly what I intend to be doing and if you can't support that, someone else will. If you really gave a damn about your users, you might start by backporting security fixes to previous versions instead of spewing out a cacophony of incompatible new versions so rapidly you end up confusing and alienating users and making them switch updates off entirely. I mean seriously, what happens when Firefox hits triple digits? You could stick a decimal in front of it, and name that build after a historic baseball player who had that batting average. But even then you will run out of players in a few months.
It's truly sad. I switched to Firefox because it was the best browser. But Firefox has been backsliding horribly since around 2.0, and the other browsers seem to be in about the same boat. Firefox IS still the best browser - but only if you use an ancient, unsupported version. That's a big problem.

Using an obsolete version released [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox/9.0.1/releasenotes/ December 11th 2011] is the exact definition of downgrading. It exposes your system to all the security vulnerabilities that have been fixed since then.
    * https://www.mozilla.org/security/known-vulnerabilities/firefox.html
Out-of-process plug-ins was made mandatory on Windows Vista and later because Adobe don't test Flash Player's protected mode with OOPP disabled. This change didn't happen until Firefox 14, so there was no need to go as far back as Firefox 9.0.1.
If you absolutely have to, you can disable OOPP by creating the ''MOZ_DISABLE_OOP_PLUGINS'' environment variable and setting its value to '''1'''. Firefox must be restarted for the change to take effect. This works in the current version of Firefox, so there's no need to use obsolete insecure versions.<br>
If you don't know how to create an environment variable, see the following article for instructions (the "Using the Custom Environment Variable" section is not relevant).

  • Looking for a webmail with multiple accounts support

    Hi,
I would like to set up a webmail on my server which I will use to check my various mail accounts on gmail and others.
I tried mutt, alpine, claws-mail, but I don't really like "true" mail clients, I prefer to use webmails (so it can render HTML mails, and I can access it from anywhere). But since I have many accounts, I can't (and don't want) to use the gmail webmail.
So I'm looking for a webmail which could transparently handle multiple accounts from different mail providers. I will be the only one using it so I don't even need multiple users to log on.
Does it exists? What would you recommend? I don't know anything about webmails.
My server is running lighttpd, with php and python (webpy). I'm not afraid of modifying some of the code if needed.
    Thanks.

You can collect mail to your server, sort it (say have one local account with one folder per mail account), and view it via webmail.
    Check this wiki articles:
