Looking for a correct solution for fast external drives
It is unfortunately after having bought already 8 LaCie external drives of 500 Gb to 1 Tb a few years ago (Firewire 400/800) for my MacPro that I heard from this forum that I should never use these drives for video backup because being unreliable. The poeple who said that were right. Out of the 8 drives, 6 are now dead (disc failures) and lost some precious files.
So now I am looking for a more reliable solution : I read somewhere that I could have for external storage a PCIe SATA controller w/ RAID performance; a solid SATA case for 4-8 drives perhaps. But when looking at SATA controller on the web, I am not certain whether all these cards work on a MacPro (the first Intel 2006 model with Mac OS Tiger 10) or just with Windows. Can someone advise me on what would be the right SATA card to buy for that computer, where to find them and what case I could link it to to install several hard drives ?
(By the way, my 4 hard drive racks inside the MacPro are all used already.
I’m on my third G-Tech external drive and I love their quality. I simply grew out of one and gave it to my son. The new mini works great too although my MacPro doesn’t like it when I partition the drive. It tends to stutter a bit and can lock things up on the MacPro. Still, I plan on buying the G-Safe as soon as I can. They certainly offer RAID Enterprise units although I haven’t used them. G-Tech uses Hitachi drives as the company is owned or associated with Hitachi. Either way, they’re hard to beat.

Correct solution for login loop on admin account
Hello,
Can any mac experts help me find the correct solution for my log in loop problem.
I have been using my macbook pro for about six years without any touble, its a 2.16 GHz intel core 2 duo running OS X 10.6.8.
Yesterday when I went to log in to my main account I see the desk top and then a blue screen and then back to the login screen.
I can no longer log in to that account, I am now logged into another account which appears to be working fine.
I have done research for the past six hours trying to learn something about what is going wrong, I have no experience solving any problems in snow leopard as I have never had any to solve.
The problem is I have found lots of posts describing the same problem with as many different solutions. As a novice I have no idea how to identify my exact problem and the correct solution.
One sujests:
All I did to fix this was zap the P-Ram by holding down CommandOption+PR upon restarting. Hold down the keys and let the boot chime ring 3 times. Easy fix.

Besides the fix that worked in that case, you could try deleting the following files from the home folder of the problem account:
Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist
Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist

I think your problem may be due to a corrupt file, Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist in your home folder. You should delete that file; the question is how, since you can't log in.
The choices are:
1. Log in as a different user, if you've already defined one.
2. Start up from a bootable external drive, if you have one.
3. Start in FireWire target mode and connect to another Mac with a FireWire port.
4. Boot in single-user mode. That means typing commands into a full-screen shell interface.

The LaunchServices database in the problem account is corrupt. This is how you reset it. Launch the TextEdit application. Select the line of text below in your browser:

sudo -u fubar -H /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchS ervices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain user
It's all one line, though it will wrap on the page. Drag or copy the text into the TextEdit window. Change the word "fubar" to the short login name of the problem account. WARNING: The forum software may insert extra spaces into the text where it wraps. I can't find a way to keep that from happening. Remove any spaces that coincide with a line wrap and occur in the middle of a word.
Now launch the Terminal application. Copy or drag the whole line from the TextEdit window to the Terminal, and press return. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. Quit Terminal and try again to log in as the problem user.
Can anyone help me identify the exact problem and correct solution please.

Looking for a nice solution for different cases with nearly same operations

I'm looking for a nice solution for the following problem:
I'm measuring different data at the same time (with different devices).
I would like to save these data all in one array (or cluster?), but I
don't know exactly the way to do this. All values have corresponding
time values. So for one data type it would result in a 2d array,
wouldn't it? But how can I save different data types with their time
values in one array? Or should I take a cluster? And how can I get only
a certain type of data out of this array or cluster again? E.g. if I
only need data type "3" with its time stamps for evaluation? I would
really appreciate an example, I work with LV 7. Thanks!
Then - for evaluation - I only need one data type of these different
data. Which one I would like to choose via the frontpanel (it changes
from test to test). So, I thought of a case structure (where I can
choose which data type and correspondingly which evaluation way). The
evaluation steps for the different data types are quite the same, but
can vary in order of execution. I could write for every case the
(nearly) same evaluation steps, but this would take a lot of time, plus
if I need to change one step I need to change it in every case.
Does anybody know a better way?

There is "array subset", which allows you to get any desired subset from an array. If yoyu want entire rows or colums, use "index array".
To display the last 30 values in a chart, just feed the data to a chart with the history size set to 30 elements. The rest will fall into place.

General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive. Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk. Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

Fast External Drive Options Macbook Pro 15"
Hello.
I own a 15" Macbook pro 15" core i5 processor in it etc.. I have a dock style enclosure for 2 SATA hard drives that has USB connect and also eSATA. The USB is INCREDIBLY SLOW. I am waiting sometimes 2-3 minutes just to have a song start playing in iTunes... I am looking for a way to use eSATA on this laptop. I bought an Expresscard/34 with eSATA on it because I read that would work with Macbook pros but I was dissapointed when I found out that this generation of them does not support it!! I am running ProTools M-Powered 8, which requires me to use my only Firewire port to hook up my audio interface.
I love my Macbook and the MacOS, everything about it is better but this small problem is a large hindrance to my workflow. I guess I should add that the hard drive dock is plugged into a Hub. Perhaps If I plug the dock into the second USB port which I hope has it's own separate bus I should see SOME improvement. =(
Perhaps somebody here has something that might help.I knew it wasn't going to cut it, I just don't know much about all these small revisions to the macbook pro. Having never seen an expresscard before I assumed that the SD card slot doubled as the expresscard slot. The people at my apple store said nothing about the expresscard not being on the 15" model when I bought it and asked questions about it. In fact they went looking for expresscards for eSATA at the apple store and ended up recommending Newegg to purchase one. I've just been really mis-informed about this whole expresscard thing.
I guess I can sell this eSATA/USB dock and look for a firewire hub and enclosure. are there any docks that are reasonable priced?
By the way, My internal drive works fine for playing back audio that has already been recorded. Mixing is actually faster than on my desktop! The mac screams compared to it. I have sessions in excess of 5gb of audio that play back fine off the system drive, but I will need a decently fast external drive in order to record audio. No Digital Audio workstations respond well when recording to the system drive. =/ -

Assuming you have set up Purchasing with accrual method on receipt (and not on period end), you could enter the PO lines with receipt required. The receipt transactions you are uploading will generate the accounting to charge the expense accounts / or inventory valuation account.
There is no need to interface those also to Payables. In AP enter one invoice with the real monthly amount and match it to the purchase order level or to the receipts level. Approve and pay that invoice.

No, as Guitaristguy313 stated, the heat problem exist in most (or all?) Core Duo laptops, whether they are Apple branded or Sony branded or Dell branded. The MacBook is not running warmer than another Core Duo based laptop.
So it's apparently the normal operating temperature of Core Duo laptops.
That's not too surprising considering that Intel document its Core Duo to be in normal operating temperature if the cores of the CPU don't run higher than 100°C, and 100°C is a very high temperature.
Hopefully MacBooks Core Duo's cores generally don't run higher than 85°C, but while within specs according to Intel, it's still very high so it's not surprising that the notebook shell temperature is high also (according to a test on a website, the shell can reach 50°C when the Macbook is used intensively).
So if you really want to have a culprit for the high temperature of the Macbook (and in fact also other Core Duo notebooks), it would be Intel. -
Looking for a correct EDID for acer aspire 1690
Hi guys,
The EDID of my acer aspire got corrupted (the computer is pretty old).
If anyone has an acer aspire 1690 or similar model, can I get a dump of their EDID?
To get a dump, you need to install read-edid and then launch get-edid.
Or if anyone has tips on how to modify modelines to reduce scintillation, that would work too.
I know it's an old computer but it's the only one I have right and probably for a few months.
I would like to not kill my eyes.
Cheers,I’m on my third G-Tech external drive and I love their quality. I simply grew out of one and gave it to my son. The new mini works great too although my MacPro doesn’t like it when I partition the drive. It tends to stutter a bit and can lock things up on the MacPro. Still, I plan on buying the G-Safe as soon as I can. They certainly offer RAID Enterprise units although I haven’t used them. G-Tech uses Hitachi drives as the company is owned or associated with Hitachi. Either way, they’re hard to beat.

If I order a new MBP 17" for architecture and planning grad program, will SL come installed on the machine? Is SL considered a whole new OS or jut an update to Leopard? I am not even sure I am wording the questions correctly, so I apologize if I am not. I stopped at Tiger because the Leopard OS looked a bit too intimidating for me back then but I think I can deal with it now. Is it a big set-back that I did not learn how to use Leopard and now I am getting SL?

I will throw this out there. I also need a decent but very heavy duty external hard drive to use for the work done with CAD. Any recommendations on a top-of-the-line heavy duty external hard drive? I guess the case is the main thing but the drive should be able to take some extra abuse because I baby the MacBook Pros but sometime the external drives get the abuse. I think USB2.0 is good enough for what I need.
Thanks AgainI would imagine that you could turn up good and bad reports on any drive. I have been highly satisfied with my 3 LaCies, two dating back to 2004. And, LaCie has very good phone support.
I use only clones and drag and drop for data changes between clonings. If I had to choose one method of backing up, then I definitely would use this process. Still, one can take a dual approach other than mine. The idea is to have a clone, which is updated fairly recently, to serve as a fail-safe, system backup, and restoration device. And, one could still use TM for day-to-day backups because of the flexibility it allows in moving backwards in time to retrieve data and because it updates automatically frequently. I want to experiment more with TM. So, I will move to this sort of dual system in the near future--as soon as I figure out which partition on my main external I can do without.
For cloning, I like SuperDuper because it has the ability to make incremental clones--thus, shortening the recloning process significantly. CCC is good, but I have never used it. Actully, Disk Utility is a highly respectable cloner, but it does not have as many options as the others, including not having the ability to make incremental clones. -
MBP 2012 as Photoshop workstation: fast external drive solutions?
I'm a heavy Photoshop and Lightroom user. I have a current 2.6 ghz i7 MBP w/ a 750gb 7200 rpm internal hard drive, which I hook up to a 30" monitor and Wacom tablet.
If it were a desktop I'd have an internal dedicated scratch drive and RAID. What are my external oprions, and is it viable w/ USB 3 components, assuming they'd be less expensive than Thunderbolt?Stupid me for not reading the "2012"... anyway... here's what I would do.
Install a 480-512GB SSD in your internal drive slot. With a $400 SSD with your system, applications, working files, etc., you'll have plenty of space to use as a scratch disk and Photoshop will fly. Get a good FW800 4GB RAID for under $300, or a good 4GB Thunderbolt RAID for about $600 for storage. Most of these RAIDS will be configured as RAID 0, which is fine. You can get a G-Technology 4GB RAID for under $300 on Amazon - see here. The G-Drives get mixed reviews - I've three of them now and have had no problems, but perhaps someone else can suggest alternatives - LaCie maybe? So...
...worry first about a fast internal drive solution - and get a SSD for scratch, systems, apps, working files, etc. It's going to be your fastest option. And get a 4TB (at least) RAID 0 for storage - Thunderbolt if you can afford it or Firewire 800 for half the price. You can but an enclosure from OWC for your 750GB internal and use it as a Time Machine backup for your internal drive (not optimum space, but it will work - I have a 2TB G-Drive for my Time Machine backups for my 512GB internal just now).

HT1449 can i use this process for moving my library to an external drive?
My iMac is dying a slow death and I want to run itunes and iphoto off my external drive as the data may get corrupted if it stays on the computer hard drive.
If I designate a folder on my external drive and then cosolidate will that allow me to run itunes from the external drive?
When My iMac fails will I be able to take the data from that folder for the new iMac?
Thanks,I'd suggest you just drag the entire iTunes folder (the _entire_ folder, _not_ just the iTunes Music folder) to your desired location. Then hold down the Option key while launching iTunes. You'll be given a dialog box where you can select the iTunes library you want to use. Navigate to and select the iTunes folder in it's new location. Note that this procedure assumes that all of your content is contained in the iTunes Media/Music folder. If things are scattered around your drive, moving them becomes much more complex.
As to moving iPhoto, you may want to confirm the correct procedure for your version of iPhoto in the iPhoto forums.
Your iMac cannot be running Mac OS 9.2.x, by the way. It will help people offer advice if you'll correct that.

Fix for iPhoto lost thumbnails on an external drive
I've had a few times when iPhoto seems to have lost all my thumbnails and pictures. I finally figured out what caused it and how to solve it. I thought others might be interested.
The problem occurs because of 2 things:
1. I store my iPhoto Library on an external drive.
2. While running iPhoto, the external drive becomes disconnected by mistake (usually because I kick the power cord)
I found that the problem is that iPhoto still tries to write the library files to the same location as it used to be. In order to fix the problem, you just need to remove the files that were created accidently. Here are the steps I used for iPhoto '06 and Max OS X 10.3.9 on an eMac. I'm guessing they'll work with other versions, but have not tested them.
0. Quit iPhoto. Make sure you have a current back-up of all your files (don't you always
1. Write down the name of the drive where you store your iPhoto library on the external drive:
I'll use <drive> in the remainder of this description. Replace that text with the name you just wrote down.
2. Open the "Terminal" inside "Applications/Utilities/"
3. Type "cd /Volumes". This is where Mac connects external drives to your UNIX filesystem. "cd" means "change directory" to the "/Volumes" drive.
4. Type "ls". You should see the name of your drive there. "ls" means "list" the contents.
5. Eject the <drive> from you Mac via the Trash Can and turn it off as normal.
6. Type "ls". Normally your drive should disappear from this listing. However, you'll notice that the drive still appears there. The problem is that there are really 2 directories there, one gets over-written when you attach an external drive. But having 2 causes lots of problems.
7. With the drive off, you want to move the 2nd directory out of the way. To do this, you will need to become a root user for a moment. This is done with the "sudo" which means "switch user and do something then switch back". The first time you use it in a terminal you will be required to type the administrator password. It's a very powerful command, but keeps you from getting into the wrong mode forever.
8. Type "sudo mv '<drive>' '<drive>.wrong'". This switches users, "moves" the bad directory to another directory name (ie. rename for UNIX). Make sure to use the single quote (') in case the name of your drive has spaces in it.
This doesn't remove the bad files, just moves them out of the way. That way if this doesn't work, you can just move it back with the reverse command "sudo mv '<drive>.wrong' '<drive>'".
9. Now turn your drive back on.
10. Type "ls". Your <drive> should now re-appear in this listing.
11. Restart iPhoto. It may ask you to locate the Library again.
Please note that these instructions are only provided to help other users running into the same problem. Also, I am not responsible for any lost data by following these instructions.

eMac Mac OS X (10.3.9) iLife 06It would be much easier if you make frequent backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and when you have a disconnect like you did, just replace the damaged file with the backup version. It is important to have a "recent" backup so you can get back where you were. So I've created an Automator application that will copy the file to the Pictures folder, label it orange, any time you click on it. So you can backup after any import, or work on a book, slideshow,etc. You don't need to close iPhoto to do it. Just don't be writing the the database file. TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

Wrong Mouse Pointer for Adjustment Brush with Image on External Drive
Adjustment brush guide "circles" is not visible when hovering over the image. It is only visible when you are to the side of the image in the gray space. This only happens when I am using Lightroom from my external drive. It does not happen from the local copy.
After some research, the brush preset I created happened to have the same settings as "skin smooth +" in Lightroom, which is the one it kept switching to. Perhaps that was the problem...

Seeking suggestions for 2 separate BC eCommerce website product applications: I have within BC so far about 200 image in the in a folder in the "File Manager" -AND- each image has been optimized as a low-res digital image down-load product (divided among 20 catalogs).
#1. Image downloads not for individual purchase but as (a bundle of 6 for one price) and (a bundle of 13 for second price) only.
I'm trying to customize two BC products a 6 Pack & 13 Pack of digital image downloads. Normally in BC, a visitor could purchase a single image as a downloadable product and after successful check-out they would receive an email containing the download links. I need to disable single unit purchases and enable the customer to ONLY select 6 images for one price -or- select 13 images for one price. I have been looking into a drag n drop system that would allow the visitor to: purchase the product > select 12 images > submit their select by email to site admin.
I have limited coding skill and I should mention that I originally created and continue to add-on to the site with Adobe Muse. Because I chose to use Muse, I have been looking for solutions that I can embed in Muse pages as "Objects" as Muse will over-write BC custom elements as it is over-written. I have looked at either using a 12 field drag n drop which might work but I can't determine how to make the 20 catalogs available on the same page to select from.
Can ANYONE offer suggestions?
ThanksSorry but in no way will you get that to work using Muse.
You need to custom trigger the core functionality BC fires to add to cart in the system as well as update the visuals etc, and also overcome some of the BC scripting and what that does and function overrides etc. You need a high end front end developer at the least to be able to help you, and not using Muse. -
