Looking for a cross platform (Mac+Win) Photo+Movie organizer.

Hello,
I am not sure as to where to post this, but I am desperately looking for a program to organize my photos and movies on both platforms. iPhoto is great, but I can't use it on my win PC, Adobe Elements is perfect... on windows, but is gimped on a Mac (no organization features), Lightroom is ok... but doesn't organize my movies, and Aperture is mac only.
I have my livrary of pictures on an external disc, and was hoping to be able to roganize, tag, modify, and add keywords via my Mac AND PC.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for you input and insight on this matter!

Nah, you still get the points for the wonderful tip! What a life saver! Thanks so much! I think I agree with you as for the version to get, the non pro version will probably fit my needs fine... I still have 20 days to make up my mnd though.
On the other hand, I was wondering about the organization capabilities of this software: I was thinking of organizing all my pictures with keywords, as in if a picture was taken in NY, I am on it, and it is at night, I was thinking of adding the following keywords: NY, me, night.
The reason for that is that the keywords are written to the metadata of the picture file, and is permanent (as in not stored inside of iView's catalog).
The real question is that iView seems to offer many other possibilites of filing my pictures: it has a People, Places, Events (...) fields also. Are those also written to the metadata of my picture files? Would they be read by any other program? I am asking, because, if ever I switch programs in the distant future, I don't want to have to resort my whole collection (which I have to do right now since I am migrating from the windows version of Adobe Elements which stored all of the tags in a proprietary format).
Bah, I am sure this isn't the place to ask for these questions... but hey, you seem to know alot about this little gem of a program.
Thanks!

    Martnlindhe,
    I chose to purchase a MacMini Intel model to hookup to my 36 inch Sony TV.
    I chose this model for several reasons as I also have a Web Camera hooked up to it at the same time via Firewire. I use Front Row and iTunes to distribute music throughout the house wirelessly to other stereos and to view what is playing now via the TV.
    Here are some photos of the MacMini hooked up to the TV and using Front Row.

    The photos aren't that great but you get the idea. The TV screen looks great in person as opposed to the photos with the glare and the darkness.
    Some TV's don't look as good as my TV looks from what I have heard so your TV may or may not look as good. I am about to upgrade to a 42 inch Panasonic HD Plasma TV which should give an even better picture. At this time, my TV is connected to the MacMini via the "S-Video" cable. The HDMI video cable is a better choice if your TV has that capability.
    The new iTV from Apple is rumored to be released sometime this coming Spring.

    Yes you can make multiple backups on one hard drive, for example if you’ve 1TB hard drive installed in your PC and you’ve two Mac Machines with 500GB drive each then you just make two backup images with size of 500GB each.

  • Looking for a cheap used Mac

    Greetings,
    I'm looking for a cheap, used Mac to play around with iPhone app developement. How far back can I go hardware wise and still be able to install
    Snow Leopard?
    Thanks,
    Patrick

    You can install Snow Leopard on any Intel model as long as it has at least 1 GB of installed RAM.
    Snow Leopard General requirements
    Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
    Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
    Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.

    I am looking for software to store photos with.  I am not a fancy photographer, and really am just looking for the digital version of a photo album. iPhoto is not cutting it, mainly because it does not back up and restore easily on an external HD.

    That's how Time Machine and iPhoto now work.  Restore the library to one of the external HDs, check it for the photos you want, export them to the boot drive and delete the restored library.
    If you know the file name of the photo you're looking for you can search for them in the TM backup using Find Any File.
    My workflow allows me to do that:
    1 - upload new photos to a folder on the Desktop.
    2 - name the folder to represent the contents and date: 01/03/10-Toads Bday
    3 - use a file renaming app to sequentially rename the photos in the folder to: 2010-01-03-Toads Bday-001.JPG,  -002,JPG, -003.JPG,  etc.
    4 - import the folder into iPhoto creating an Event with the same title as the folder.
    Now I can search for those file by file name with any app of my choosing.

  • Cross platform update Win 1.x to Mac 3.x

    Hi,
    i'm going to ask that question here again, because i think that is has not been answered correctly by the Adobe Support.
    I like to update to the newest Lightroom version and use it on my new Mac computer.
    I have a valid, registered serial number of Lightroom 1.x for WINDOWS.
    I used it on Windows serveral years ago. Has not been used since 2007....
    I don't have any Lightroom 1.x software available any more, neither for Win or Mac...
    Now I installed the DEMO version of LR 3.x on my MAC. Now the evaluation period is over.
    My question is: can i just buy an upgrade packet to LR 3.5 (multiplatform?) and use it on my MAC now?
    How will that work? Will they create a new vaild serial number out of my old serial, just to activate the DEMO version ??
    Will i have any issues because the original version was used on windows, and now the new version will be used on MAC?
    Remember, i dont't have any old software version available any more, so i am not able to install an old software to let an upgrade software search for any old installation! Got me??
    It is my biggest concern that the new version will search for any old installed software version, which i don't have....
    Thanks for your help.

    The license for LR is platform independent.
    You do not require version 1 on your system. All you require is the original valid serial number.
    When you enter the upgrade serial number LR will ask for your old number, you enter this and all will be well.
    If you registered your original serial number with Adobe you can find this on your account.

  • Just purchased D7000, Looking for advice MacBook Pro or Win 7 64bit

    I just purchased a D7000 and I'm looking to upgrade my PC for photo work with Lightroom and Photoshop CS5. Looking for feedback from experienced users. What is better, MacBook Pro or Win 7 64 bit?

    Its hard to get reliable information about which platform Lightroom is most likely to work best on, since Adobe would say "works equally well on both", and most individuals have personal biases that cloud objectivity (plus, the users just dont have enough data points to make a curve, so to speak).
    I've used Lightroom on both platforms, but can't tell which is best, except:
    The Windows version supports hotkeys for menu accesses, which makes plugin use far more convenient (Mac version does not). Also, some (not many) plugin functions just dont work on the Mac because of it.
    Also (I'm a plugin author) there are some inefficiencies in the Windows implementation of the plugin infrastructure that make me wonder if the Lightroom software has a Mac bias under the hood - but I dont know. On the other hand, there are some anomalies in the Mac implementation of the plugin infrastructure that make it hard to program plugins to work as well - for example, edited text fields are not commited before a button click is processed, so having buttons that do things with freshly entered text can be a challenge - there are some workarounds but not always viable, and a plugin author must know about it, remember it, code for it, and test for it... And, Mac users need to be aware that they may need to tab out of a text field before clicking a button that processes the text...
    Anyway, in the grandest scheme of things, I think the differences are relatively minor, and the bigger question is: Which platform do you want to use for "other" things besides Lightroom.
    PS - There may be slightly more potential for problems on the Windows platform because of the larger variety of hardware and drivers which could have funny interactions, but these are the corner cases...
    Lightroom works great on my Mac, and on my Windows machine (much better on new machine than older), but Aperture hardly works at all on my (relatively new) Mac (sloooooooow), yet others dont have same problem... - go figure...
    Cheers,
    Rob

  • Looking for a way to make a photo less than 100kb

    I have all the 'considered best' photo apps for my Ipad3.  I've read every manual, looked on the net, downloaded any trial photo sizer app I can find and have spent hours trying to do what I believe should be a no brainier but have not found a resolution to a simple problem.
    I'm trying to find a way to make a photo a specific MB size.  I post on a bulletin board that has a restriction of 100MB upload.  There is a great app for Mac but ways to make a photo a specific file size doesn't seem to be available for the Ipad.  After hours of searching I'm at a loss as to why there aren't any apps to do this.
    A simple app with a slider or other that will give you the MB size as you move it would be great.  Every app has a plethora of options and they still can't even do that.
    Any suggestions?
    Dan

    Thanks sberman
    That will work taking a few steps although I would think it's a last resort with fair results.  Thanks again.  While waiting for a response I decided to bite the bullet and purchase an app that looked promising.  ( Don't like to purchase as I've purchased a number of .99 apps and wasted money )
    So, I purchased this app called 'Resizer' not knowing if it would do the trick.  It did!  I even got a bonus as the app lets you upload to a photo site.  From there it's a simple paste the link and I'm done.  The app appears to have been made for the purpose of posting photos to BB's which is what I'm doing.
    I was trying to get as close to the max size as I could as they have a weekly 'photo day' and wanted the best quality.  That app did it.
    Thanks again for the suggestion.

  • PDF with special characters (é, ñ) needs to be legible cross-platform(mac & pc)

    I am using Illustrator to design a PDF. Because it's in Spanish, accent marks and other special characters are needed (á, ñ).
    When I export the PDF from the ai file and view it on my mac it looks fine. However, when I open it on a pc some of the special characters are completely missing.
    I tried Creating Outlines with the text, although it will make it harder to update in the future and so less preferable to leaving the text editable. Creating Outlines works fine on the mac, however on the pc the L's appear thicker than they actually are.
    Does anyone know how to make special characters legible cross-platform when creating a PDF using Illustrator?
    Thanks!!

    Does anyone know how to make special characters legible cross-platform when creating a PDF using Illustrator?
    Yes. You use a correct OpenType font that has the glyphs in the place where they belong and can be embedded without limitations. Older TrueType or PostScript fonts are simply unsuitable as are fonts that cannot be emebdded and require to be installed locally. It all comes down to system language settings vs. the unified environment inside acrobat. This also requires any PDF to be created on systems with the language settings correct in the first place, i.e. creating Spanish text with a Japanese version of AI would be pretty desastrous due to how foreign language fonts are accessed... check these things and then try again. If possible, enforce embedding of the full font in the PDF settings, not just a subset and choose a suitable font.

  • Looking for an iPad(iPad/Mac) app that allows for playlists to migrate to iPad

    I am specifially and exclusively looking for recommendations for an iPad(iPad/Mac) app that allows for my playlists to be migrated to iPad intact and playable.
    iTunes -> Podcast/Music/Videos does not support mixed (music/video/podcast) playlits or video playlist at all. The app(s) should be able to easily create these playlist on the Mac (and manage content) much like iTunes (10).
    On the phone with tech support today and they agree this is missing functionality from Apple. They suggested I reach out on to other users that may have a thrid party solution.

    Requires each device/user have an unique Apple ID(verifiable email address):
    http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/find-my-friends/id466122094?mt=8
    Otherwise you can use Find My Phone, but requires logging in for each separate user. Find My Friends(built by Apple) will show everyone's location on one device.

  • Looking for a camera with the flip photo capability of the iPhone~ any suggestions?

    Looking for a digital (small) camera that would allow me to see myself when taking a photo without having to flip the camera completely around... Are there any suggestions on where I should start to look/recommendations? New to the camera world!

    How much do you want to spend?  What do you think about the D5200?  With a DSLR sensor, the image quality will be incredible compared to an iPhone.  Need more light?  Just add an external flash.

  • Looking for Toronto (GTS) based MAC expert... suggestions?

    Looking for a MAC expert that can come into by business and assist with all our computers.
    We have the need to configure all our computers, place a backup system in place. etc.

    These forums are mainly for asking technical questions; Apple does not participate except to occasionally make sure that the ToU are being followed. I believe there is a business section if I'm not mistaken? Ahh, here is a link to the Apple Business Store:

    You might want to start there; I am sure there'd be resources, but since I've never had the need, I don't know where to find them.

  • Grid Control for a cross-platform migration

    Is it possible to use Enterprise Manager Grid Control to execute a cross-platform migration? A co-worker suggested checking this out, but he wasn't sure if it would work or not.

    Cross-Platform transportation is a complex process and done by RMAN utility. Don't rely on GridControl, better follow the roadmap in

  • Looking for a script that will size photos down and give unique filenames

    Here's the challenge:
    I have a bunch of photos that need to be sized down to three different types of thumbnails, each group of thumbnails needs to have a specific prefix to the filename while keeping the rest of filename in tact.
    So example:
    I start out with a photo 1400 x 933
    That photo needs to be sized down to 3 different smaller sizes: 630 x 420, 210 x 140 and 140 x93 (all of those have the same aspect ratio as 1400 x 933). So far this is a simple Action in Photoshop.
    The trick I can't figure out is that these photos need to have a specific file naming convention. Say for example the 1400 x 933 photo we start out with is named w_paul_001.jpg the other photos once sized down need to be: x_paul_001.jpg (for the 630x420), y_paul_001.jpg (for the 210 x 140) and z_paul_001.jpg (for the 140x93).
    How I do dat?

    This will do what you want:
    var srcDoc = app.activeDocument;
    var imgNum = srcDoc.name.substring(7, (srcDoc.name.length)-4);
    var myJpgQuality = 12
    var sizeArray = [
    [1400, 933, "x_paul_"],
    [630,  420, "y_paul_"],
    [100,  100, "z_paul_"]
    for (var i=0; i<sizeArray.length; i++)
      var shrinkWidth =  sizeArray [i][0];
      var shrinkHeight = sizeArray [i][1];
      var mySaveName = sizeArray [i][2];
      var id428 = charIDToTypeID( "Dplc" );
      var desc92 = new ActionDescriptor();
      var id429 = charIDToTypeID( "null" );
      var ref27 = new ActionReference();
      var id430 = charIDToTypeID( "Dcmn" );
      var id431 = charIDToTypeID( "Ordn" );
      var id432 = charIDToTypeID( "Frst" );
      ref27.putEnumerated( id430, id431, id432 );
      desc92.putReference( id429, ref27 );
      var id433 = charIDToTypeID( "Nm  " );
      desc92.putString( id433, mySaveName );
      executeAction( id428, desc92, DialogModes.NO );
      activeDocument.resizeImage(shrinkWidth, shrinkHeight, 72, ResampleMethod.BICUBIC);
      filePath = srcDoc.path + '/' + mySaveName + imgNum + '.jpg';
      var jpgFile = new File(filePath);
      jpgSaveOptions = new JPEGSaveOptions();
      jpgSaveOptions.formatOptions = FormatOptions.OPTIMIZEDBASELINE;
      jpgSaveOptions.embedColorProfile = true;
      jpgSaveOptions.matte = MatteType.NONE;
      jpgSaveOptions.quality = myJpgQuality;
      activeDocument.saveAs(jpgFile, jpgSaveOptions, true, Extension.LOWERCASE);
      app.activeDocument.close(SaveOptions.DONOTSAVECHANGES);
