Looking for a device. Need suggestions

Looking for a reasonably priced device that will allow me to plug in at least one usb mic, (ideally 2 in the future), and a headphone jack so two people can listen. I have headphone splitters. I'd like to record right into Garageband. Let me know. Thanks

  • Looking for a device to control the incoming audio

    Hello together,
I use my MacBook Pro as a visual artist, who does audio-reactive stuff.
I usually hook up to the DJ mixer, who provides me with a stereo cinch signal.
But every DJ mixer has a different signal level. And often the DJ gets drunk & turns up the volume during the night.
I'm looking for a device that I can plug between the DJ's cinch cabel and my microphone input jack at my MacBook Pro. A device that shows me the actual signal level via LED or a gauge and let me adjust the audio level. Up or down. To make sure I always have (more or less) the same level reaching my MBP.
I cant open the SysPrefs 10x a night to adjust the audio signal. Plus I want to protect my MBP agains high peak levels.
Maybe something like this microphone thing:
    http://behringer.de/MIC100/index.cfm?lang=ENG
    Do you have other suggestions?
    Kind regards, Jan

    Hi,
The item you listed is a pre-amp usually used in conjunction with microphones to provide phantom power (to large diameter mics) and to boost/warm their signal.
From your description, it seems you are looking for an audio interface. An audio interface would convert the incoming signal from analog to digital at the interface, instead of inside the computer, and route the signal into your computer through the firewire or usb (depending on model) port. The advantage is that the AD/DA converter on these units is normally of much higher quality than the one included with the macbook pro and the signal is subject to less interference.
I've linked a unit in the mac store http://store.apple.com/us/product/TQ936Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDA3MA&mco=MjE2MzAxNw which is very popular, but it's a little pricey considering it's only 2 channel but then, for your application, that's all you'll need. There are cheaper alternatives to be found at music hardware sales websites eg. musiciansfriend.com . Again, you'd search for 'audio interface' for a mac.

  • I am looking for a device that will answer phone calls on my Mac. I have had a Phonevalet, and it is great, but it is no longer made.

I am looking for a device that will answer a landline phone. I have a Phonevalet, which answers, takes messages, has call block and is pluged into my Address Book, but it was discontinued, and I would like to add another line. Ovalabs made a similar device, but it also is gone. Is ther a way to use an Apple Modem to take calls? Any other product? The best part of the PhoneValet for me was it would announce the caller ID over my stereo (pluged into my Mac) and I could hear who was calling in my workshop and decide if I wanted to interupt the call.

I know I'm talking about expensive apps, but having been in prepress for about 30 years now, I really don't look at anything other than Quark XPress or InDesign for page layout apps. Your printing vendor will also be much happier with you when you use these products. Some areas of the U.S. tend to be mostly Quark oriented; others, InDesign. Ask your vendor what they would prefer, and if there are any free or cheap alternative apps they'll accept documents from.
Apple's Pages app (part of iWork) is a decent page layout program, but hasn't been updated in four years. It also doesn't support CMYK. If you place a CMYK image in the app, it will export out an RGB version of it. Not good! You can work with RGB images if you prefer, but your CMYK translations will be left to the skill of the print shop you use to do the conversions.
Don't even think about using Word. It has what it calls a page layout option, and does pretty much work like one, but there's no good way to import it into a real layout app such as InDesign. You end up paying the printer for their time to rebuild your entire project in either XPress or InDesign so they can actually do something with it.

  • I am looking for a device that I can use to record a lecture (2 to 3 hours long or more) and later access to write notes to paper or convert the file to a printable file, is the iPad 2 the device that will do this?

In your reply you stated that iPad microphone is not very sensitive. And that you could hardly hear the play back.
Are you speaking of a speaker's  nature voice or an individual using an audio system. Also how close were you to the speaker?

  • Looking for multiple graph logging suggestions

I have a "host program" that is attached to a cRIO platform used for precision controlling of some heavy machinery.  The current host is used to set parameters, but primarily to read values and display trends for the operators and maintenance personnel.  I had previously been looking for a method to put a correct timestamp on my historical charts, which allow the user to scroll back if something odd occurs, but this has become more trouble than it is worth.  One of my main difficulties in all of this is that I have 6 synchronized graphs that need the "roll back" ability, and putting a live timestamp on a chart you must be able to pause and rewind is unfathomably difficult with LabVIEW...
So, I have decided to kill 2 birds with 1 stone, so to speak.  I needed to work out logging the graphed signals to file anyhow, so I decided I might as well just do this and externally reference the log files for the "rewind" functionality.  My problem now is finding the best approach to log these 6 graphs of differing types...  The first graph has 3 overlaid analog values, the second graph has 2 overlaid values, and the last 4 are each just a single individual (scaled) sensor reading.  The graphs are updated every 100ms.  Accurate timestamps (date and time) need to be attached to the data as well.
This logging is a new arena of LabVIEW for me, but I figured there has to be at least a few experienced users or developers out there who know all of the ins and outs.  Any suggestions on the best way for me to log this data?  Individual files for each chart, or is there a better method to combine the data to keep it cleaner (not multiple files to track)?  Are there pitfalls I should be watching out for?

Take a look at tdms files.  They are a binary format that is open (www.ni.com/white-paper/5696/en).  You can define groups of channels and they can be logged at different rates.  The LabVIEW API makes it relatively easy to retrieve a channel or group, although it may be more challenging to find a specific time if your files are large.  Besides the examples included with LabVIEW, you can drill down into the TDMS File Viewer that's in the TDMS palette for another example.  Also, there is a plug in for Excel that will allow it to import TDMS files (zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/epd/p/id/2944).

    For the BlackBerry?
Try getting a new theme for the device, look for one that is called a "Today" theme, which includes calendar and task items.
You don't say what model you have, but look at various theme sites, like phttp://www.pimpmyberry.com/

  • New Ipad User looking for some good CRM suggestions for small business

    Hello All,
I am a new (and satisfied) Apple Ipad2 user.  I am the sales rep for a small business that is in the health care field.  I am looking for a good CRM program for the following reasons and I am wanting to know if there is a particular program that can provide any of these things for me:
Ability to put in all of my customers information.  Seperate folders for each.
Ability to add information to customer folders/files based on recent phoen conversations or actual on-site visits.
Ability to set a reminder of when to call back on that customer to see status of his/her patient that was fit with our product.
Ability to allow other members of the company to check in on this information as well.
A little background, we are a small company in the health care field.  We have 90 customers currently and we are growing at a steady pace.  I would like for my upper management to look at the CRM at any point and see what is going on with each customer.  If I sell a product to Customer A, then I would like a reminder to pop up 6 months from now when that patient will be ready for another product.  I would also like to be able to update a customer file so that management can see when I called on a customer, etc.
I appreciate everyone's input as I have never utilized a CRM program.  I am currently using Dropbox for all of this right now, but it seems like a CRM would be more organized,
    Thank you,
    --Ryan

    HI Ryan,
Did you find an app for CRM, one thing that I'm also curious about, you may need to find one that is HIPPA compliant.

  • SQL Performance - Looking for a hint or suggestion on how to improve performance.

I've linked several tables for the Sales Order, Delivery, and Invoicing. In essence, a query to show shipments and invoicing to a sales order.
Throughput is poor....60 + seconds, so I am looking for a solution...perhaps /* + hints*/ techinques to improve the performance of this code.
Here is a functional version of the code....
/* Functionally tested join between OM, WSH, AR Tables */
    Select oeh.order_number
         , trx_number as invc_no
         , rctl.line_number as invc_line_no

         , apps.ra_customer_trx_all rct
         , apps.ra_customer_trx_lines_all rctl
    Where oeh.header_id = oel.header_id
       and wdd.source_header_id = oeh.header_id
       and wdd.source_header_id = oel.header_id
           and wdd.source_line_id = oel.line_id
           and wdd.SOURCE_CODE = 'OE'
       and wdd.delivery_detail_id = wda.delivery_detail_id
       and wda.delivery_id = wnd.delivery_id
       and rctl.interface_line_attribute1 = to_char(oeh.order_number)
and rctl.interface_line_attribute6 = to_char(oel.line_id) --this is where explain plan cost is high!
           and rctl.org_id = oel.org_id
       and rctl.interface_line_attribute3 = to_char(wnd.delivery_id)
       and rctl.customer_trx_id = rct.customer_trx_id
       and rct.interface_header_context = 'ORDER ENTRY'
and oeh.order_number = '99999' --enter desired sales order here....
    Order by 1,2,3,4;

    Can you provide your explain?
Also, can you do an "set autotrace traceonly" and run it again and post results?  The results of that would help people here provide more reasonable suggestions.
(Mine so far is only: avoid hints - that's a crutch and not solving the real problem).
Are your statistics up to date?
    select table_name, last_analyzed from dba_tables
    where table_name in (
           'OE_ORDER_HEADERS_ALL OEH','OE_ORDER_LINES_ALL OEL','WSH_DELIVERY_DETAILS WDD',
           'WSH_NEW_DELIVERIES WND','WSH_DELIVERY_ASSIGNMENTS WDA','RA_CUSTOMER_TRX_ALL RCT',
            'RA_CUSTOMER_TRX_LINES_ALL RCTL' );

  • If ur looking for best answer, I suggest you.

there's Alot of customers who have not solved the issues, even I have an issues with my iPhone since the new upgrade. I tried calling, it was a long hold and also wastes of time so I hung up. I had problem
with wifi and freezing application, I tried going on apple online support to find the answer for this. I seen so many I mean billions of comment and I got too tired of looking for it so I just used google and typed down what the problem I was having, guess what... It works like charm everythi g on my iPhone works perfectly fine. So my opinion is just google seach them and also make sure u type in for example I typed in iphone 2.0 version wifi problem and there's a list but all of them were helpful they answer faster than calling or searching on apple and macworld.com. So that's my opinion. Remeber take ur time reading it. Good luck with the search.

I also found this case from amazon and it works great for $6

  • Web gallery or slideshow, non-Flash, for mobile devices needed

    Hi,
My website -- www.johnblaustein.com -- is all Flash and I'm getting some mild complaints from viewers who would like to see my work on an iPad or iPhone.  I built my galleries with SlideShowPro and I know Todd at SSP is working on a mobile device solution.  In the meantime, however, I'm wondering if anyone here has some solutions they might share.  The iPhone screen is so small that I find thumbnails to be just about useless and navigation difficult.  I'm wondering if there is a Lr solution that will produce a web gallery or slideshow that will run full-screen on a mobile device with a simple next and previous button.  I'm even thinking I might just do a limited portfolio as a video file with no navigation at all.
    Any thoughts?
    Thank you.
    John

    John,
Unless I go for mobile support, I am doing just fine as-is with SSP/LR.  I understand the benefits of Director, but at this point I don't have the energy to learn yet another application... unless I really need to.  I trust you that learning Director won't be as complicated as I am imagining, but at the moment "it ain't broke, so I don't want to fix it."
I do all my site work myself with Lightroom, SSP and Dreamweaver, so I agree that I could probably get up and running with Director fairly easily.  The time will come no doubt.
Thanks again for all of your comments.
I was hoping that others might chime in here with other suggestions on making mobile device web galleries, but maybe there just aren't any good ones.

  • Little progress = still looking for usb devices

hey there. i am running Arch w/ 2..6.7
my usb system seems to be jaxed up. xcdroast did not find my usb cd/writer and although gtkam selects the right camera for my usb camera, it gives me an error like
    "cannot list folders in / " -
i may have some kernel modules that still need to load but i dont know which ones.
any help here would be great. How do you get usb working in Arch ? thanks all

ok, well i got the usb camera working. Google prodced this, modprobe ochi-hcd. so i did that and added it to rc.conf and now the camera works ok. still think i am going to go for digikam though. he he.
the CDRW is a TDK usb one. Its usb 2 but i think that my motherboard usb port is only usb 1.
It works fine in Debian ( which i got rid of for Arch ) and thats cool. This is the last piece of hardware now i have yet to get going.
the google results also suggested loading echi-hcd but when i tried the messsage i got was "could not find module echi_hcd.

  • Looking for cheap device to view VHS

I've done a quick search through the forums and haven't found an answer yet. I have an old pile of VHS tapes that I need to quickly scan through. I don't know whether there's anything worth saving (or if they have degraded enough to the point where they're no longer viewable), but I need a way to quickly plug in the old VCR into my MBP and casually go through them.
I've noticed a number of cheapie devices on the market. Can anyone recommend one that works well enough to just view them? If I find anything worth of value, I'll spring for better equipment later on (as I don't want to invest in a Grass Valley device at the moment), but for now I just want to go through the stack and put things into a bulk erasure pile as needed.
    Thanks.

if you got the vcr, then i'd just hook it up to a tv. you can pick up an older analog, like a 13" or so at a goodwill or salvation army / similar resale shop. they are littered with them. now for converting, elgato makes a basic usb input under $100. the eyetv hybrid costs $50 more, but adds ota hdtv & fm tuner. grass valley is about the only one that still makes a firewire input box that doesn't cost a fortune. blackmagic also has some good stuff. I picked up a matrox mini, but it's an expresscard interface. hope to see some good boxes come out for this thunderbolt port...
