Looking for a external blu ray dvd burner for my mac

looking for a external blu ray dvd burner for my mac

There are plenty of options but I have found that the LaCie d2 http://blu-ray.burnworld.com/burners/lacie-d2.htm works more consistantly. I use Toast 11 mainly for Blu-Ray. The drive does come with a basic verison of the software which is good for most but you need to upgrade to do some serious authoring.

  • Looking for an external USB CD/DVD burner

    Hello all,
I just got my MacBook Air 13" and I'm in need of an external USB CD/DVD burner.  I've read on Newegg and Amazon that certain drives require two USB plugs just to get sufficient power.  With the MBA, however, this isn't really feasible because the USB ports are on either side of the machine.
We already broke the bank buying this laptop, so we'd like to save money on the DVD burner if possible.  Those of you with Airs, let me know which DVD drives you've had success with.
    Thanks!!

I'm a big fan of LaCie products so I've had this external CD/DVD drive for a while -
    http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?id=10340
It's a little on the high end but it's been fantastic in the close to 3 years I've owned it. It only requires a single USB port, mainly due to the fact that it requires A/C power to run.

They are all the same dimensionally, you just change out your front bezel and the rear mounting bracket. When you install it Windows automatically installs the drivers, but you will have to install your own Blu-ray burning software of course.
Some advice, the laptop burners are not that great and they are all single layer (25GB) An external burner is way better, but the laptop Blu-ray readers are OK.
I am running an LG external Blu-ray burner and it's very reliable.
This software is good and it's free. It lets you go through the burning process first with out the lazar to make sure everything is OK. With this feature you don't waste expensive media.

PS : Just checked, this one does appear to be duel layer as well. Contact the seller to ask him what he means by "rewriting speed"
There is even a little you-tube video on the e-bay link I gave you on how to exchange the bezel.

  • Looking for an (external) Vendor Supported DVD burner

    Hi all,
For years I've been working with pleasure on my 700 MHz eMac, despite of the loud fan noise. The only thing is that not until now I regret the fact I didn't bought the SuperDrive at the time, for budget reasons.
Looking for an external solution, I encountered the LaCie FireWire DVD burners, but those machines don't seem to be cooperative as it comes to iMovie and iDVD. Apparently Apple don't consider them equal to 'their' SuperDrives
What brand and type (or part number) should I be looking for to have the external drive be recognised as a Vendor Supported device?
Please, somebody help me here. Otherwise I will have to ask a new Mac with those specs for Christmas and that means waiting another year....
    Olaf

Patchburn is a free software download that allows you to use Apple's iApps application such as itunes for burning of non native drives. Your OS will most likely be ok with the new drive for playing movies & audio cd's but have you tried burning with your drive? If you have iDVD this will most certainly not be supported by your drive due to special firmware within Apple superdrives that technically you cannot get around. Though if you have the version of iDVD with iLife 05/06 it places a disk image on your desktop so that with application such as Roxio Toast you can burn freely with.

  • Qosmio x775-3dv80 Blu Ray/DVD burning gets Blue Screen of Death.

    I just got a new Qosmio X775 3DV80 laptop.
Tried to burn a Blu Ray movie with DVDfab 8. The process went through all the way till the very end and then I get a blue screen of death every single time. the brief error says IRQ problem. burning DVD gets the same.
a friend as a same model laptop. tried on his with the same result.
So it's not my particular machine!
i installed a copy of Windows 7 Pro on the sencond HD. burning either DVD or Blu Ray with no problem.
it suggests there's a glitch with combo of the original Windows 7 and the Blu Ray drive.
i have not contacted Tosh yet.
    Anyone else experience the same???

Peter, thanks for your suggestions. I tried so and didn’t work either however. I compared the drivers for the blu ray disk between the preinstalled Windows 7 version and my Windows 7 Pro (works as my first post). The only difference is the former has two drivers: (1) cdrom.sys, and (2) tdcmdpst.sys. (the Windows 7 Pro has only one : cdrom.sys). It seems this model shares the a common problem, but not enough users with the app combo to stir up some waves… Additionally: Between my first post and this one, the screen acted up. It would go black and came back in 2 sec with full brightness. The current app would freeze and brightness control function stopped working. Happened in random and a few times within an hour. Got a replacement from Amazon where I bought it (same blue screen problem on this one, too). Two weeks or so later, the 3D function went out on the new one. Today, the wireless function went south… am I "lucky" or crap on Tosh’s side?

  • Blue Ray DVD Burner: Will the drive play both formats i.e. Blue Ray

  • Optimal Quicktime Export Settings For Eventual Burning to Blu-Ray DVD

Hello. We currently have a huge backlog of FCP, FCE HD and iMovie HD projects created in 720p and 1080i formats. While we all await FCP and DVD Pro support of the 1080p Blu-Ray DVD burning, in the mean time, what are the optimal Quicktime Export settings to get best possible rendering of my existing FCP, FCE HD and iMovie HD in preparation for eventual transfer to Blu-Ray DVD for best possible viewing on my large screen LCD TV via Blu-Ray DVD player. I'd like to get to work exporting all my movies into the optimal Quicktime format in preparation for 1080p Blu-Ray.
For example, I have been creating FCE projects in a 1080i 60fps format. Once completed I typically have been exporting a "Full Quality" stand-alone movie. Is that what's optimal for the 1080p Blu-Ray DVD format, or something else? For example, what about interlacing? Should I be "de-interlacing" my outputted quicktime movies for better playback in the Blu-Ray 1080p format? What other things should I be considering.

Full quality sounds like you'll be safe. Keep in mind that WHEN DVDSP gets Blu-ray support, it will be able to do al the encoding itself. I do know that the next generation DVDs are using MPEG4 or VC1 compression instead of MPEG2 like standard DVDs are today. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264/MPEG-4_AVC http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VC-1 That being said, I don't believe that Compressor has a VC-1 encoder, but it definitely has H.264, so if you wanted to do the encode yourself, I guess you could pick that and be set. I would do some research on the technology behind Blu-ray and then base an encode on what you find. There's also MANY threads on here about this already, so Search is your friend and use it to get more info.
Good luck and don't forget to rate if this was helpful,
    -Brian

  • Blu-ray DVD production ...all that...

    Hi,
I am looking to start creating blu-ray DVD's through using DVDSP4 and was wondering if any of you had any ideas on the best external drives an players out there at the moment.
    thanks

    You'll need either:
    FCS3 (2009)
    Toast 9/10
    Encore CS3/4
    and a blu ray burner.
    OWC (macsales.com) sells several.
In FCS3, you can use Compressor 3.5 to create basic blu ray discs; DVD SP does not.

  • External Blue-Ray Device

I've noticed around the web a few blue-ray external drives for PC's popping up, I know an iMac wont display HD but would it be possible to play the blue-ray disc through such a device since DVD's will be getting phased out sooner or later.
    Thanks,

If you just want to use the BR disk for storing a large amount of data, as you would with a CD or DVD but with more capacity, yes. At least there are companies selling external Blu-Ray drives - OWC, for one - for such a use; I haven't used any of them so I can't say of my own knowledge how well they work.

  • Creating a Blu-Ray DVD from Final Cut Express

    Hi,
I work in avchd ingested video in FCE. I'd have thought that to make a full HD hard copy of my final movie that I would need to purchase a Blu-Ray DVD burner and hook it into my MacBook Pro and just burn. I read recently somewhere that FCE doesn't allow HD DVDs to be created. I find this strange. Why am I bothering to shoot in HD if I can't see the final production in HD? I may as well have just bought a standard DV camera, and saved myself a whole lot of hard drive space and edit processing time. Am I missing something?
    Thanks,
    Vic
