Looking for a gaming laptop...

Hi,
I am really not a fan of PC's. In my past experience, PC's have just felt cheap and the build quality was lacking. They never lasted very long either. I was wondering that if I buy the 15 inch Retina MacBook Pro with the GT 750m, will that be enough to game on smite, Titanfall, Metro etc.? Also, does anyone own this computer and have experience with gaming that they would like to share?
Thanks!

Macbook Pros are not the best gaming computers.

  • Warning to people looking for a gaming laptop

    I bought Gateway FX P-7805u(Core Duo 2 P8400, 4GB RAM, 17.1" monitor with 1920x1200 max res, and GeForce M 9800GTS 1GB for $1,150 ) about 10
days ago. It was an amazing deal! I searched the internet for hours and couldn't find a laptop that was a bigger bang for the buck. I was extremely happy
with it...for the first few days.
At some point however it started to crash most games I played, showing the infamous nvlddmkm.sys error. I tried every suggestion I could find on
    google:
-Installed latest drivers from nvidia and gateway
-Ran a memory test with no problem reported
    -Switched between opengl and d3d
    -Disabled Aero theme
-Decreased clock speed up to 10%(did work on one game)
    -Formatted to factory condition
At that point I thought it must have been a faulty mobo/gpu, but I doubt it now. There are many people with the same model and the same problem:

The error happens only when certain 3d apps are running, so if you don't play any games, this shouldn't be a problem. But this is supposed to be a
GAMING laptop! Too bad I have to return this tomorrow. I won't find a budget laptop as good as this(as far as the specs go, of course).

That is the number 1 reason why I do not recommend a laptop for gaming. There are just no upgrade options avaiable for most notebook computers.
    1. Let's say you spend $2000 in May 2009 for a laptop so you can play Crysis.
    2. January 2010 Crysis 2 comes out (just an example) and you want to play Crysis 2 on your laptop.
    3. Guess what?? Your videocard in your less than 1 year old notebook computer will not play Crysis 2.
    4. You cannot upgrade the videocard.
    5. So you have to pay out another $2000 or more for another laptop just so you can play Crysis 2.
PC gaming requires constant upgrades and you can't do that on most laptops.
    Exactly.
While my Nvidia 8800GTX is still able to play the majority of the games on the market

  • Looking for a new laptop

    Hi.
Because of an unexpected hardware problem I'am looking for a new laptop.
The last weeks I've informed me a bit of some laptops but I'am not really sure:
My favorite is Samsung R560-Aura P8400 Madril but my last notebook had an ATI graphic card and the last months I was really enthusiastic about the getting better official drivers.
And whats with the the FN-keys, webcam, bluethooth, wlan card and support? Some experiences?
    Thanks, Andreas

    Or get a Bamboo?

  • TS4062 I've done all of these recommended steps.  My problem is that I have a new laptop that I am trying to sync my iPhone (and iPad for that matter) via Wi-Fi but both devices are looking for the old laptop to sync.  Any other suggestions?

I've done all of these recommended steps.  My problem is that I have a new laptop that I am trying to sync my iPhone (and iPad for that matter) via Wi-Fi but both devices are looking for the old laptop to sync.  My iTunes is version 11.0..3.42, iPhone is 6.1.4, and iPad 6.1.3.  Any suggestions?

All I had to do was complain.  I synced my iPhone to the Windows machine, checked the other account at iTunes prompting (where no apps had shown up previously), reconnected the iPad, and 140 apps downloaded including the App Store.  I have no idea why.

  • Suggestions for a gaming laptop

So I am curious about buying a laptop that can handle games, even if it is at the lowest available setting. The sims 3 would a great game to base the requirements off of. I am willing to spend up to about 1000$ but would really like to go cheaper than that.

for gaming, you can't go wrong with Alienware ...
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Alienware+-+M14X+Laptop+/+Intel%26%23174%3B+Core%26%23153%3B+i5+Processo...
I know it's a bit out of your price range, but keep an eye out for those 10% off coupons you get in the mail and it'll bring the price just under $1000 like you're looking for.
I'm personally getting the M17X very soon and this is after a good solid couple of weeks researching different laptops for gaming.  Although I'm also going with this because I have like $300 in best buy gift cards to help lower my out-of-pocket cost.

  • Looking for the right laptop for school use

I'm hoping to find some good suggestions for a new laptop.
I'm a college student and need something I can take with me from class to class & use for typing notes (in Microsoft Word) and opening and editing PowerPoint documents.  I'm also wanting a fast internet connection.  Other than that, I'm hoping to spend as little money as possible.   I'd like something slightly compact, but price is more important than size.  I won't need much memory at all- my school documents will be stored on a USB and on my home PC. (Dell Studio PC)  No gaming, no need for music or pics.
    Any suggestions????  Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Pretty much any netbook will work.
BUT.... the part that you'll need to clarify. Most netbooks/laptops don't come with an internet source built in. You'd either need to look at an air card from a wireless provider, or check to see if you'll have WiFi where you go to school. To be clear though.... Air Card = Internet pretty much everywhere. Wifi = Internet where it's provided by someone, either the college, or at your home, or Starbucks.
If you like my post, or solution to your issue/question, go ahead and click on the little star by my name and/or accept the post as the Solution. It makes me happy.
I'm NOT an employee of Best Buy, or Geek Squad, though I did work as an Agent for a year 5 years ago. None of my posts are to be taken as the official stance that Best Buy will take on your situation. My advice is just that, advice.
Unfortunately, that's the bad luck of any electronic, there's going to be bad Apples... wait that's a horrible pun.

  • Looking for a Multipurpose Laptop

Mmkay, I have about four things that I would use a laptop for--that I use my desktop for now--that I would like to know what kind of qualitifications I'm looking for.
    1: Writing(General word documents)
2: Playing music. Preferably in winamp, mp3s. Sometimes from youtube.
    3: Playing World of Warcraft.
4: Surfing the web, most typically on webcomics and places like Deviantart.
Can anyone help me out, here? I know alot of laptops are leaning towards superaffordable so specs as well as price quotes would be an awesome thing to have.
and I fully plan to buy a USB mouse, I can't stand using a touchpad to play WoW.
    So, any ideas, anyone? ^-^;;

$1100 is a decent PC budget. Let's set aside 10% for a wireless mouse and laptop bag.
I think these models should get the job done..,..
HP HDX 16-1375DX-- Plenty of power, at the expense of battery life.  A handsome laptop, but you'll have to be on top of the fingerprints.
Asus G51VX-RX05-- Another heavy hitter, but the looks will take some getting used to.
Sony VGN-NW150J/S-- This bad boy is packin' Blu-Ray. If you like movies, it worth a look.
Dell X1340-024B-- I have a soft spot for this one. It's a little thing, that packs a punch.
    Disclosure: Former BBY employee.

  • Looking for a new laptop, need help!?!

I am searching for a new laptop to use in college and i am planning to spend $900 to $1000 on it and would like a laptop that is not too big (like equal to or under 16".) I would like at least 500GB hard drive and processor that is good but not to strong that I have no battery life. I was thinking i5 processor.  I would like it to have enough battery to be able to use through good chunk of day (like 6hr rated or so.)  It needs to be somewhat durable as I know college will take its toll on the computer.  It would be great addition to have a good video card.  I don't know if there is anything out there like this but hope there is.  Please post suggestions or new ideas about what i would need for college.  Thank you for any help!
    Luke

    Hi Lukedmann,
Thank you for considering Best Buy for the purchase of your next laptop. As we start off the Back to School season you should start seeing the introduction of quite a few new models,  and some that should be able to meet your need. With the way technology advances day to day, this shouldn't be impossible to maintain.
Personally, taking into account any and all biases I have and stuff, theres 4 models i'd point out to you inside my store. Understanding that these are not your only options, and that I think that the aethetic design of the computer (how nice you think it looks) should definitely play a role, i'm sure any of these should be able to meet the demands you specified.
    3 Models to Compare
Overall these are pretty close to your price limit, and I chose these assuming you wish to spend 900-1000 on the laptop and already counted in taxes, accessories, softwares etc. Just to let you know I discounted some models to give you the higher quality, however some models which come out to cost less would still meet your specified criteria. Let us know if you have any questions.
    Sincerely,
    Agent Lamar

Can't speak for the VGA card but the wireless card works nicely with the IWL3945 driver which is included in the latest archlinux installer and is avaible as a package in the repos.
A quick tip though. The IWL3945 driver is new and therefor migth be buggy, some reports has been made but they seem to fix it rather quickly.
If you encounter a problem that cannot be resolved easily you migth atleast consider using the old IPW3945 module+userspace daemon.
Though the IWL3945 driver is to be recommended as it eliminates the need for a userspace daemon.

  • Looking for a new laptop, I work in finance.  Air book or the macro with retina?

Looking for a new notebook.  I work in finance and travel.  Is the Mac Pro with Retina worth the extra weight or should I go with a Air book?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The MacBook Pro with Retina display is worth, but it's limited. Note that you can't upgrade anything after buying it without voiding the warranty. The same happens with the MacBook Air.
Simply, if you have to run heavy applications, buy the MacBook Pro with Retina display. If not, buy the MacBook Air

  • Looking for a new laptop, please help

I am looking into purchasing a new laptop in the next couple weeks in the $700 price range and am wondering what the best options are. I have basically narrowed it down to the Toshiba P745-S4217 and Asus U46E-BAL5. But I also like the sony VPCEG16FM/W and Toshiba R835-P70. Which one is the best bange for the buck? I want something that is fast and not to loud or overheat. I like having good speakers and something that is fast. I know the Toshiba R835-P70 is only 4GB RAM but is it that much slower then the ASUS U46E-BAL5 8GB? I dont do any gaming so that doesnt matter, will just use for school and surfing the web so want something that is fast and built to last a few years. If they are all pretty similar I am thinking the Toshiba P745-S4217 is probably best option due to speakers and blu ray. Finally, besides what is already listed on your site, are there any major differences or things I should know about the four computers I have listed. Thank you for your time and help. Feel free to offer any other suggestions for laptops as well.

No one can answer this for you.  You will get lots of opinions, but you have to decide which of those laptops is right for you.  You'll have to compare keyboards, screens, what software is loaded on it, etc.
Now, for my opinion (remember, you'll get lots of those):  Stay as far away as you can from Sony computers.  They are overpriced, and they have terrible build wuality.  Toshiba has been going downhill the last two or three years, but not as badly as Sony.  Asus products are pretty good, I would not hesitate to recommend them.  THey have been making motherboards for a long time.
Any computer in your price range will easily handle the tasks you stated.  "Fast" is a relative term, and when comparing, the figures are pretty much meaningless .  Another reason to do a hands on comparison in the store.
If a single model in your price range has a lot fo features that the others do not have, then be very wary...that usually means sub-par components used just to get better specs.

  • What should I look for in a laptop for CS4?

    Hi All:
My laptop which I use heavily for photoshop supports openGL 1.5 only. So
I suppose it will not work with the new features in CS4. As I would
really like some of the new features it looks like as I need to upgrade.
So the question, how do I pick one that has good chance to work with CS4?
From what I've read here CS4 is picky about what video it will work
with and I don't want to spend money on a laptop that doesn't support
the flavor of openGL that CS4 likes. And no I don't want an Apple, they
cost just too much for what you get.

I have a desktop, but the problem is the desktop is not were I am. I'm
mobile, its not. I'm taking care of my 86 year old mother with dementia
and I can't be near her and near the desktop at the same time so the
laptop is the best answer. I've been fairly happy with using the laptop.
The screen calibrated well and it's been fast enough. But the new
versions of lightroom and CS4 seem to hit new highs in computer horse
power requirements. Like Microsoft, Adobe seems to be telling their
users "if you want usable performance, get a bigger computer." And I
will but looking at the video spec's and deciding if they are compatible
    with CS4 is not easy.

  • Looking for a gaming controller that will work with iMac

I'm not really into gaming, but I just bought a game and right now I have to use the keyboard keys and I'm finding it to be a not so enjoyable gaming experience. So I would like to purchase a gaming controller.... does anyone have any recommendations on ones that work for the IMac?
    Thanks!

I second the logitech rumblepad 2. I have the cordless version. Works like a charm, I had a 3rd party system preference pane for changing the buttons, I used it once to set up, the buttons didn't really do what I said, could well have been me not doing it right.
I had the 3rd part pane because I couldn't get it set up in Need For Speed Carbon, but now it works perfectly on its own.

  • Been Looking For A Gaming Desktop PC for Years

Alright , So i want to get a Gaming PC Desktop this year.. I've been thinking and i only want to use 1,000-1,200 with screen! What is the best i can get? Thanks! Also i don't want to build so please don't say build it.. I want a pre-build system. Any recommend brands? Any deals you know of!? Thanks!

Cheaper computer that has graphics good enough for your purposes. You will need to play the newest games with top of the line graphics from medium - high settings. You can upgrade the graphics card in the future if you feel a need for it. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/iBuyPower+-+Desktop+-+8GB+Memory+-+500GB+Hard+Drive/6979787.p?id=1218818... Same as above, but with a better graphics card. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/CyberPowerPC+-+Gamer+Ultra+Desktop+-+8GB+Memory+-+2TB+Hard+Drive/6979369... The most expensive I would recommend because anything better is just for showing off your computer. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/iBuyPower+-+Desktop+-+8GB+Memory+-+500GB+Hard+Drive/6979823.p?id=1218818... All these choices are computer with Quad core processors( 4 processors working together at the same time), so you computer should handle most programs and games for a long time. All these desktops should be fairly easy to upgrade or use a base to do a full self built computer if you decide to later.

Hi! I am looking for an apple computer that would be good for gaming and music, movies etc. So I would like some input on some different products I'd be able to buy? The types of games I play are downloaded also. Any help would be good! Thank YOU!

while the Air can play many games fine, it is not an idealized gaming machine.
