Looking For A K8N Neo4 Platinum Ultra Board

I have had my 2nd MSI board fail and it is now out of warranty, GRR. Looking for a compatible MSI board but am not having much luck other than Ebay and I am not sure if I want to go that route. My cpu is the AMD Athlon64 4000 and I have 2 matched OCZ memory sticks which are the 400/3200 I think. Does anyone have a good suggestion for a board that would be compatible with this hardware?? Thanks much.

BOSSKILLER; Thanks for the come back. Yes, I am finding that out but still searching. I have found a couple new ones but they are overpriced. One is $146 and another is $124 plus shipping. Don't know for sure if it is worth all that at this point yet? I may just part out the machine before it is over, going to keep looking for a couple days yet though. This was the main ladies machine and she got frustrated and bought a huge 22 inch HP TouchSmart with Vista on it of course. That new OS does not show me much yet, slow and glitzy though.

  • Best Drivers for new K8N Neo4 Platinum Ultra 7125-010

Looking for just a little clarification on which drivers to load for this board. It is on the way with my CPU and should be here tomorrow. In reading through some of the posts, it seems to be a good idea to load the most recent drivers right from the start and not even use the CD that comes with the MSI board. Below is a list of the Drivers which I "think" are needed.
    Graphics Video Driver; 78.01
    Nforce AMD Driver; 6.66
    Audio Driver; 4.62
In doing some further reading, it seems I may need the following also but am not sure??
    Windows XP Unified Driver; 5.10
    Which includes the following:
    Audio; 4.42
    Audio Utilities: 4.44
    Ethernet; 4.42
    Gart; 4.36
    Memory Controller; 3.38
    SMBus; 4.04
    Installer;4.46
    IDE NVIDIA; 4.46
My plan is to setup the build with 1 WD 37.6 Sata drive as the boot drive and only the drive to start with. As for my Internet connection, I am going to use my USB Gigafast Wireless to connect to my D-Link DL-524 wireless router. I am going to Disable all of the onboard LAN features. Part of my confusion at this time is, do I need all of the Windows XP Unified Driver package??? Thanks in advance for any help in clearing up my confusion. Also, is there a specific order in which these should be installed??
    Regards; Pop's

No problem Pop,besides,I'm 42 now and still love to build on my computer
As for the link, you need the "AMD Athlon™ 64 Processor Driver for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Version (exe) 1.2.2.2"
or the one just above it "AMD Athlon™ 64 Processor Driver for Windows XP x64 Edition and Windows Server 2003 x64 Editions Version (exe) 1.2.2.1"
It will uninstall the current driver that was installed with the mainboard driver cd,and should install the newer afterwards, you can check in hardware device manager if the driver version is the newer for cpu after reboot.
Haha, yes,I had the same feelings before I build this system, reading all msi forums regarding mainboards.
And all I read was problems after problems. But I have another system based on the KT3ultra,which I build 3 years ago,and I'm still pleased with this system so I decided to stay with MSI for now. Also I noticed the problems were/are the same on the Asus platform, seems common on nforce4 mainboards.
As for building, just take your time,I had a slight incident with placing the heatsink+fan on the cpu socket, apparently in the corners of the cpu bracket is a small ledge(Énglish is not my nature language so don't know if I use the correct word) ,I couldn't get the retention lever in place, needed a lot of pressure and I became scared of damaging things.
So I waited a few seconds and tried again, suddenly with a loud click, the retention lever fell in place, the heatsink was hindered by this ledge in one of the corners from the bracket. So you have to place the heatsink correct and don't overuse the pressure you need for the retention lever.Slowly increase it,and all will go well.
Also I noticed the pcie graphics card fell right over the retention clip that holds it in place right besides the northbridge fan(well, actually on the left side from the fan),so installed once,it's very hard to get your finger behind to replace the card for example,or to clean it out from dust. But I used a small tool to get behind and press the clip for card removal(a bended metal tool,so I need to be carefull using this)
As for sata drives,I started with an ide to be on the safe side, but I do know you need the driver floppy disks for using the sata drive.
Can't help you any further with that for now, when I buy sata2 drives no doubt I also will need to check if I need a bios update etc.But that's with a smooth system already running,so I can take my time and redo any steps I made if things fail.
That's why you need to do the correct order of installing software,it's much easier then to fix problems that may arise.
Well, goodluck and don't be afraid, just take your time.

There is no driver for memory controller with A64 (nforce3/4) as stated earlier .
You see this in the memctrl.inf for UDP 5.10 , driver pack for nforce 3 and backwards down to nforce 1 .
Memctrl is only added to the 5.10 package for backward support to nf2 and lower as this is a unified driver package and
the memory controller is at chipset level on the motherboard that resides in the external northbridge on nf2 chipsets and lower .
What you see is just a vendor/machine id description and is just as it should be .

Took the cpu off and cleaned it, upgraded the video card started the computer and no post. Led's 1,3,4, green 2 red. Took cpu out and checked it no bent pins, checked all connections. Sometimes when it boots it will have 4 green led's but no video. Tried another vid card same thing. Tried booting and holding the insert, cont+home, F1, delete keys. Get power to the fans and hear the HDD sometimes.

No posts to your post either  LOL
Anyway - could be fans causing it - I had my Neo not booting until I disconnected a case fan from the mobo fan header output.
Try with just leaving the cpu fan (could also be this one of course) .

  • X2 3800+ (E6) support for the K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI

    Hi everyone:
I have decided to purchase the K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI (MS-7100-020) and I ready placed the order.  However, I wonder if it supports the AMD X2 3800+ (E6 Version) CPU?  The reason I asked the question because I found the following table from the Taiwan MSI web site which shows that X2 3800+ E6 is undertesting.
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_cpu_support_detail.php?UID=641&kind=1
    Thank you for any replies.

Mine worked, ran for 2 weeks already at stock, tried & ran to 2.2GHz on stock HSF with no problem.
    Using X2 3800+ E6, MSI K8N PLI Platinum mobo, 3.7 bios & Inno3D 7800GTX single latest nvidia 78 drivers, 2x512MB DDR400 CL2.5 Kingston Ram, Hitachi T7K250 Sata 250GB HDD, NEC ND-3530A Benq 1640, , Silverstone Zeus 650W PSU
At first I have this concern too, but tried it anyway.

  • New Build Update K8N Neo4 Platinum Ultra 7125-010

I will report on the positive results of my build first. All installs went very smooth, no problems except for a bad floppy drive from the start which I did replace. I have 1 Sata hard drive on Sata controller #1. Installed XP Pro/SP2 Slipstreamed without doing the F-6 thing and had no problem with the Sata drive booting after install. I have a DVD/RW on IDE 1 as Master and a CD-Rom on IDE 2 as Master. The board is functioning very well for 5 days now. My only disapointment with this board, is the onboard sound. This is supposed to be better than my old K7N2 Delta L onboard sound. I am here to say, it is the very worst sound system I have ever heard. While getting the new build setup, I had a pair of $4.00 speakers hooked up and thought it was acceptable. When I hooked the build up to the rest of my hardware, which has a pair Altec Lansing speakers that sounded great with my old K7N2 Delta L, I was very shocked. Sounds like crap. Not much volume or other settings can make it sound worth a darn. Just can not figure out how the el-cheapo speakers sounded better than a pair of quality speakers. I have fooled with settings until the lady of the house is ready to pull my plug. Other than the sound issue, I do have to say this is one incredible machine. Guess if I really want quality sound or even something close, I will have to install a sound card.
    Regards; Pops'
EDIT: Open mouth and insert foot. I was not about to quite give up on getting some decent sound from this system. Opened the Nvidia Mixer Application again and started fooling with selections. On the first screen, I had choosen the " 2 Speakers Mode ". Well, I started playing with the selections there and selected " 7.1 Speakers " and that made all the difference in the world. Now it is very acceptable. I am not real picky, but just could not figure out what happened when I moved the build to my office which had the Altec Lansing speakers and it sounded like crap without changing any settings??? Long story short, I guess it pays much reward to keep picking away at the settings.
Now I can go to bed and not have that grinding on my feeble mind.
    Regard's again; Pop's the pooped.

Yep,the 2T setting is much slower compared to 1T.
What I did was this,I set the top row at auto,so that covers all the cas latencies.
Somewhere below is a second option on auto,I set this at manual.and changed nothing but the 2T to 1T.
One thing to note though, when I build my system I had some nvraid complaints when booting, still after disabling them all.
It needed a cmos reset to work properly.
Also I noticed in memory section from bios two settings in the bottom row.
    read preamble value
    max Async latency
They were both on 6ns. Setting them on 5ns makes things a little faster but also made my windows show some error messages just out of the blue.So I kept them on 6.
Now after a bios flash without resetting the cmos they were both set at higher numbers, thus more stability at a cost of some speed.
Again I had the nvraid complaints,so I needed to reset cmos (which is commonly recommended, even by MSI) and noticed the 2 memory settings are back at 6ns.
This led me to believe the board picks this up automatically after a clear cmos.
So no need for you to change any setting in bios except for the 1T option.
You will understand what I mean when you visit this bios memory page.
On a side note,I run at stock speeds also, except for the cell menu,I use agressive timings as enabled, speeds up your ram a bit also.
Ofcourse you have to try if it works on your system since you got different memory compared to mine.
    Goodluck...

  • K8N NEO4 Platinum Ultra 4 Green Lights NO BOOT ??

I have a rig that is less than a year old. This morning when tunring on with the power button, all that happens is I get 4 green lights on the D-Bracket. No post screen or video. All fans are running and power supply seems fine. Re-seated the video card and memory modules plus did a bios reset with the little red button. Still no go. Does anyone have some advice on where to start?? Hard drive light does not come on at all. I also checked all connections to the hard drive and motherboard from the psu, all seem OK.
    Thanks; Pop's

Bas; I put the MB on the antistatic bag it came in when removing it. I then use a piece of clean cardboard to do the testing on. Was not aware of the bag being conductive though and thanks for that information.
qyx; The power cord was pulled and I always press the power button on the case 3 times to help discharge the PSU and then give it a couple minutes before taking off the side panel and doing a reset of cmos. I closely looked at the MB mounting studs and panel for any possible shorted areas. It all looked very good. What stumps me is this machine has not had one single falter since I built it in Sept. of 06. Just would not start up on Sun. morning. My one possible thought is this, the little woman just purchased us some cozy slippers that are all leather, soles and all. They are fleece lined. They are horrible for collecting static. This is her machine and it is almost identical to my build except for the CPU which is a 3700+ and the video card is one down from mine which is the 6600 lite. It is possible she gave off an ESD to the power button when shutting it down or starting it up. Don't know for sure and I am not going to go there at this time. Just easier to fix the machine and warn of the slippers used near the computers.

  • Share ShutDown hang solution on K8N Neo4 Platinum Ultra

From BIOS 1.0 to 1.64, my Neo4 CPU load to ~70% with System Idle is always 99% after some times. When shutdown, it always hang at the last shut down screen "... shut down...". I have two Hitachi 160GB SATA HDD connected to the Nvidia port (non-RAID mode), under drive C and D.
Lately, I found that the drive D is not responsive under such scenario. After reading the troubleshooting guide http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.php, I try to disable the "Turn off hard disks" in the "Power Option properties" menu. Amazingly it solves the problem!
I do not know the reasons behide but I hope the real solution can be come out soon, whether it is the Nvidia driver problem or is a BIOS issue.

    brianwtl,
I am running the Neo4 Plat/SLI and the solution to the hang on shutdown was in the BIOS in this thread:
New Award 219 beta bug bios needs testing
So there should also be a BIOS solution for the problem.

  • How to SET or Configure BIOS to use XFX6200 TC video card for MSI K8N NEO4 Plat.

    Hello Friends,
Can any body help me to the following problem?
I am having XFX 6200 TC Geforce / nvidia Grafix card for my MSI K8N NEO4 Platinum Ultra board.
The BIOS states PCIE clock speed as 100 Mhz as default.  The setting can be changed upto 145Mhz.
My Video card can be configured upto 350 Mhz.  How to do this and which is the right way to use the display card with optimum setting?
Thanks for all those who reply to this.

    the coolbits link http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=815
to manually set the clocks on the graphic card, after installing coolbits, just follow the instruction on that page:
    Quote
Unpack the achive (self extracting) and then in the setup directory simply click on the .reg file. To get to these options simply right-click on your desktop and go to 'NVIDIA Analog Display' (Win XP/2003). For Win 2000 and lower you may need to get to the Nvidia Control Panel the old way. Right click desktop > Properties > Settings > Advanced > GeForce xxxx
for overclocking just take a look at the overclocking sections of the forum. make sure to read the stickies before you do anything.

  • RMA'ed K8N Neo4 Platinum board, no sound on the new board's output

    Hi Folks,
I just got back the replacement for the K8N Neo4 Platinum boad I sent in a month ago.  The good news -- my mirrored RAID array came back up and my WinXP/SP2 setup looks fine.  The bad news -- my front speaker output doesn't put out any sound.  My Amplified 2.1 speaker set was plugged into my older machine and working fine, and I just swapped the speaker cable into the green output plug on my MB, and no sounds comes out.  Sounds was working on the previous MB which I sent in for RMA, so the software on my HDD's should have been set correctly to generate sounds on the new MB.
First, any suggestions on how to get the sound outputs working?  Second, any pointers on how to diagnose what's going on?  Should I be seeing "Realtek '97" (or something like that) for the playback and recording devices, for instance?
Thanks in advance for the help!
    Clark

Couple of things come to mind.  Power on the system and head on' over to the bios.  Ensure the audio onboard is actually turned on...or if the board they sent you had it disabled.
Check the Device manager for any "!" in yellow next to anything in the audio dept. (windows control panel/system/hardware...yadda yadda....)  If the onboard audio is turned 'on' and windows is seeing it? You'll have a heading for AC '97 listed, and also under sound effects options in the control panel it should be listed.  If it's listed as working 'ok'?  I seem to remember a set of jumpers on the motherboard for audio output.  In the manual it's listing as follows:
"If you don't want to connect the front audio header, pins 5&6, 9&10 have to be jumpered in order to have signal output directed to the rear audio ports.  Otherwise the line-out connector on the back panel will not function"  That's out of my manual regarding JAUD1 connector.  And I have the Neo4 K8N board.
    Best of luck!

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI

I am confused with regard to what is actually included with the K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI board in the US. Unfortunately, MSI isn't very clear with their information.
Does this board include the following, or are they optional, & if optional how can I get them:
IEEE 1394 (Firewire) ports (1 external, 2 internal)
    SPDIF Out
    D-Bracket 2
    SATA 5-6 ports
Anybody actually have this board installed & running yet, & would you buy this board if you were starting all over again? Were your experiences with this board good or bad? Any gotchas?
    Thanks

    Quote
Unfortunatly, the MSI-websites (american, european, taiwanese) all have slightly different specs listed, but none exactly covered what my package included.
I've read numerous posts about MSI motherboards & video cards not meeting the manufacturer's claimed specifications.   This deeply troubles me, & makes me wonder if I should buy MSI products at all.
    Quote
f you buy 2 6600GT's now, you're stuck on the performance of about a single 6800GT, less in some cases.
If you buy a 6800GT now, you get the same bang, but have the option to add anotherone later to up your rig!
Exactly my point! I just can't see paying extra money on a high-end, bleeding-edge SLI motherboard, then populating it with 2 mid-level graphics cards. I suppose that seems logical to some people, but not me. I've also read in the reviews that the attachment of the heatsink/fan on the 6600GT is not physically secure, & many of the heatsinks aren't properly attached to, or making full contact with, the GPU on retail versions of the cards!
Of course, SLI is still very much a technology that has yet to prove its promise. Very few games support it, & teething pains abound. We're still in the verion 1.0 of SLI motherboards, which is kind of scary, & all of the current crop of SLI motherboards seem to have their "issues." nVIDIA is lagging behind in releasing updated video card drivers. Maybe SLI isn't quite "ready for primetime" yet.
    Quote
An Ultra would be a waste of money. The difference is not worth the extra dough for it, and a brand GT can
be clocked to Ultra-levels as well.
Some people would not want to spend the extra $ on an Ultra, but others might feel that it is well worth the cost. Sure, you can overclock a GT to gain a bit of extra performance, but what levels of performance can you gain by overclocking the Ultra? I don't know the answer to this. I still have a lot of research to conduct concerning the nVIDIA 6800GT & Ultras, & the "real world" viability of SLI.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum

I purchased this board in May of 2005 and I am looking to upgrade the processor.
The MSI web site specs say that the board is X2 ready but doesn't state what processors it supports.  What X2 processors does it support?
The web specs also state that the board supports up to a 4000+ processor.  Has this changed and does it now support faster processors that are not shown on the web specs?

  • Difference between K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI and K8N-SLI Platinum

Hey guys.... I have one question and i hope you can help me.
I'm about to get an MSI SLI Platinum motherboard, but it seems that there are two versions, the K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI and the K8N-SLI Platinum.
What is the real difference between them? As i can see in the manual, the Neo4 version has the additional SATA2 and Gbit LAN controller.
Anyone: Does your K8N-SLI board have 4 or 6 SATA2 ports? and 1 or 2 LANs?
At this picture  http://www.midtdata.dk/asp/index.asp?varernr=K8N-SLI-PLAT&goto=productinfo&mainfunc=link I can see that there are 6 blue SATA connectors (lower right corner), and 2 LAN ports left to the LPT port... But the description says 4 SATA and 1 LAN, and so says the manual.
To all owners of this mobo:  Does this picture look like your K8N-SLI Platinum or does it look like your K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI ?

  • How are some guys running an Athlon 3800+ X2 chip on the K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI?

I see many people running an AMD Athlon 64 3800+ X2 Dual Core proccessor on a K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI board, but mine dosen't work.  I don't get any signal to my monitor (don't know if this is the cause).  MSI says the 3800+X2 dosen't support the SLI board, but many people got it to work.  Any one know how?

Mine working fine, but on cold boot, sometime it hang on me. I have changed 3 PSU to get it stable, from Coolermaster 450W, Be Quiet 520W to Silverstone 650W, ambient 25C, CPU 30C, Proc 37C.
Bios 3.7 the one they are still testing.
Have you check you PSU rails volt., disable CnQ,....
So far stable, multiple programs at once with no significant drop in responseness & speed,  Half Life 2, P2P downloading x2, IE x 3, encode DVD at the same time.
