Looking for a keyboard/matrix mapping utility

I am designing my own keyboard and I need an application to tell me which keys do what. A word processing program only tells me which number or letter key I am pressing; I need one that tells me which Command, or Control, or Option, or Esc. key I am pressing, as well. I have hunted online for a few hours now, but for the five million instances Google will return, what terms do I use? Key? keyboard? Map? Matrix? For all I know, there may be a mini-app for seeing which key does what-already built into the OS X system. Or in the X11 package. Nobody told me about it. Is there a shareware program that will do it?

The standard tool for making a custom keyboard mapping is Ukelele:

However, this is only for customizing characters (not functions) made with normal, shift, option, and shift+option.

    Ah, thanks. Goes to show how carefully I look at keyboards these days...
    So Opt(alt) on the Mac should map to Alt on PC.
    It would actually be helpful if the OP told us waht the shortcuts were meant to do...
    And there's always the help files. A complete list of default shortcusts is at http://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/default-keyboard-shortcuts.html

  • My iMac is looking for wireless keyboard but I have a usb and it is plugged in.

    my iMac is looking for wireless keyboard but I have a usb and it is plugged in. Right now I am using the one from my old computer. This happened once before and I unplugged/plugged in, restarted. Didn't work. Repeated several times, it finally worked. This time not so much. Any one else have this problem and know how to solve it?

    Try turning off Blue Tooth in its respective preference panel. Do not try using the USB keyboard in a USB extender. Connect directly to the computer.

  • Looking for a keyboard

    I'm a MacBook Pro user looking for a bluetooth keyboard that includes a number pad (I work a lot in finance & spreadsheets). What have you found is the best bluetooth keyboard with number pad in the aftermarket world. Thanks.

    Logitech, Kensington, and Microsoft make the most robust wireless keyboards out there.  Unfortunately for each, the drivers need to be maintained as you update the operating system.  So keep track of them.  Also wireless keyboards eat batteries like a monster.  Consider getting high capacity rechargeable batteries for the keyboard once you discover which batteries it uses.

  • Looking for US keyboard for ThinkPad X220

    Hi,
    I bought a ThinkPad X220 with a Swiss keyboard, but I'd like to replace it with a "standard" US keyboard.
    Can anyone help me confirm the part number, and perhaps suggest where to get one? I presume it's easy enough to replace, according to the instructions in the User Guide...
    I did look on the Lenovo site under "Accessories" but of course they only list USB keyboards there.
    Thanks in advance!

    Oh really? Do you know of any difference in the keyboard, or have any advice as to which one might be the "best" choice?
    i've used all three on various models (T400s, T410s, W510, X220, external USB trackpoint keyboard, etc.) and personally prefer 45N2211.   it's the quietest of all three and feels the closest to older thinkpads.   if you prefer a more "clicky" keyboard then look for 45N2071.   of the one 45N2141 i tried, i didn't like the click of the mouse buttons as much.   however, this could have been a sample variation.
    there is no best choice here though since everyone's preferences are different.   i've heard and read about an equal amount of praise and complaints surrounding each of the three manufacturers (NMB, chicony, and alps) and cannot say which you would like the most.
    if you like what you have now in terms of feel, find out what FRU number you have and find the corresponding number in a US keyboard.   the chart you want can be found here: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?&LegacyDocID=MIGR-77194   lead_org's link above goes to a driver page rather than this one.

  • Looking for simple touch-to-command utility

    More and more people are using laptops these days, but the number of utilities providing extra touch functionality seems still lacking. I'm looking for a simple utility that will let me bind (multi-) touch gestures to keybindings, and preferably also commands.
    For instance:
    2-finger swipe-left > Mod1-arrowleft
    3-finger swipe-up > exec dmenu_run
    Does anyone know of such a utility?

    Hey litemotiv,
    Easystroke will do that. I use it with my stylus/tablet to execute apps, commands, text, (ie: passwords, signature, etc), key-bindings, etc... While easystroke <upstream version> isn't multi-touch, there does happen to be a multi-touch version - but as a disclaimer ~ i haven't actually used the MT version. However, here is a link to the blog about it (english translation);
    http://translate.google.com/translate?u … 1&ie=UTF-8
    It's also in the AUR;

    let me know how it works out! (i plan on going multitouch soonish)

  • Can't log in, because computer is looking for bluetooth keyboard

    When I start up my computer, it starts to look for a bluetooth keyboard - I guess at some point it recognized my husband's bluetooth keyboard for his iPad.
    It means, however, it doesn't recognize my USB keyboard even to key in my password, so I cannot access Preferences to stop it from searching for a bluetooth keyboard. My husband is traveling - with his iPad... Any advice on how to fix this?

    By the way the message says that the keyboard isn't connecting because the bluetooth keyboard setup isn't connecting. That it's looking for a wireless keyboard.

  • Looking for these keyboard shortcuts in FCP X

    Looked through the FCP X keyboard shortcut list and looks like I must have missed it, but can anyone tell me:
    What's the keyboard shortcut for:
    [1] advancing forward or back in the timeline by the second rather than every 10 frames?
    [2] Rippling forward/back? Keyboard shortcut? Can't find this anywhere! Do I really have to use the mouse for editing and trimming forward / back?
    When I click "Option+[" to trim forward, my whole timeline window moves more and more to the right, why????
    Not being able to find these keyboard shortcuts, causes my editing to take twice as long now.
    Looks like nearly every single keyboard shortcut is different in FCP X as opposed to FCP7. This is maddening, but I'm determined to learn it.

  • Looking for "Change Keyboard Type"-Button

    Hi. After installing Snow Leopard my Keyboard (from Cherry) works a bit wrong (some keys have wrong characters). I think there is something wrong with identification of the keyboard and wand to change it's type. "Help" (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8962.html) says:
    1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Keyboard.
    2. Click Change Keyboard Type.
    The problem is, that there is no such Button "Change Keyboard Type" in Keyboard Prefs!
    So where can I change the type?
    Thanks,
    JB

    Hello Tom,
    I'm using two layouts - one is German and one is Russian-PC (Russian layouts are a little different for PCs and Macs). I don't know if it matters, but the system is running in English.
    I still believe, that the problem is in keyboard configuration. As I was installing 10.6, system asked me to "Press a button next to the left Shift" to identify, which type of keyboard I use. I didn't understand what the system wants from me and pressed a wrong key (I believe, I tried to press "Escape" but instead pressed the "^" key).
    Exactly the same thing happend to me a couple of times as I was installing 10.5.x - this message for Keyboard config is some kind of, I dunno, magic for me (or some poor interface design) - I always miss the point, and I've always pressed the wrong key. But in 10.5. there was a possibility to run keyboard identification once again from "Keyboard" menu (and so says "Help", too). But there is no more this button and I don't know if there were any other way to run identification again. (I've tried to plug-out and plug-in again, but it didn't help).
    Thanks for your help, I look forward to try to change layouts.

  • I am looking for an animated globe/map with zoom capabilities for FCP

    I want to purchase a globe that will spin and look somewhat realistic and when I stop it on the country it will zoom in/out to the state I want. I have found globes at several companies, but I need the zoom effect. Or... I need a map of the U.S. with a zoom effect like this. Can anyone help?

    Google earth pro can be purchased with a modual that exports to AVI format, but only runs on the PC; its MUCH cheaper than 10k; I'm sure you can use the google search engine to find the home page to earth pro, with the movie maker plugin.
    You can use google earth the free version to create the sequance to test and see if you see what you like; and then upgrade to pro with movie plug in and get the best results; The free version will not be as smooth and hi res as the pro with movie maker, movie maker downloads all the data for each frame, then stores that frame in the AVI, the free version will download as much data as it can to display to keep up with the time alloted for the animation;
    You can get sneeaky and use your camera to record off the LCD panel, but this looks like crap as all the details are missing, not to mention its illegal. Pro with Movie plug in is worth it for exactly this type of thing...

  • Looking for a Generic_node-to-string utility

    Hello
    I'm creating a "SurveyEngine" application that will use a XML document defining the questions and storing the answers of the users. There is part of my webApp that must:
    1-parse the XML file (i am ok till there)
    2-append a XML child node (.. it should not be too hard, but if you have sample codes, please send)
    3-translate the modified document object back to a string to overwrite the file
    I need help mostly for the 3th step. I looked in the java API in the packages dom, sax, etc... and I didnt find anything. Could someone tell me which package.class I must use? If you know that such a class does not exist in the java API, but that you already defined a class to handle generic_node-to-string translation, I would be very grateful if you could send me your sources.
    Thanks in advance,
    Alexandre Bouchard

    ok here is the parsing section of my code:
             DocumentBuilderFactory factory = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance();
                //basic response configurations
              response.setContentType("text/html");
              out = response.getWriter();
             try
                //create the DOM parser and parse the XML docs
                DocumentBuilder builder = factory.newDocumentBuilder();
                Document document = builder.parse( new File("documents.xml") );
                ...here there will be modifications done to document
                ... and here, I want to ouput the modified document to the screen or to a file or whatever...
            catch (SAXException sxe)
            { // Error generated during parsing)
                    Exception x = sxe;
                    if (sxe.getException() != null)
                            x = sxe.getException();
                    x.printStackTrace();
                    out.println( "SAX Exception: " + sxe );
            catch (ParserConfigurationException pce)
            { // Parser with specified options can't be built
                    pce.printStackTrace();
                    out.println( "ParserConfigurationException: " + pce );
            catch (IOException ioe)
            { // I/O error
                    ioe.printStackTrace();
                    out.println( "io Exception: " + ioe );
            }All I want is a kind of document.toString() that really transform the document to a string. If you could write me some codes that do that using XMLSerializer, I would be very grateful.
    I know that it wouldnt be too hard to write my own XMLToString() utility, but it would violate my First Law of Programming: Never reinvent the wheel.

  • Looking for split keyboard with soft keys

    Does anyone know of a split keyboard that has keys as soft/sensitive as the powebook keys?

    Rubs me the wrong way when someone asks a question and people criticize the question, but I thought I'd pass on my experience.  I was disappointed that the "Nimitz" keyboard with the separate calculator-type numerical keypad and extra programmable buttons disappeared.  Part of the reason was that the keys on the "chicklet" board felt a little more tightly-spaced (way back in the day I had even gotten a keyboard that splayed apart and you could adjust the angle of the keys you hit with your left hand from those you hit with your right).  I didn't like the feel and I was typing more slowly (I'm a fairly quick typer).
    I started looking around to see what replacements would match the uncluttered modern look (wireless being part of that) while giving me the conventional keyboard feel.  (I'm also a keyboardist, as in synthesizer-player, so I know from the differences in tactile feel and resistance and such.)
    But the truth is I stayed with the "chicklet" keyboard.  I just got used to it.  Going back and forth from synth to piano means you never really get used to a bad keyboard feel and it affects your expressiveness.  But once I got used to the "chicklet" keyboard, now when I use a conventional typewriter-style keyboard, it feels clumsy and I find I type no faster than I do on the new one.
    My two cents.  If you find that's not so, good luck on the search for something suitable for you.  Would be nice to have the option for those who want it.
