Looking for a new laptop, need help!?!

I am searching for a new laptop to use in college and i am planning to spend $900 to $1000 on it and would like a laptop that is not too big (like equal to or under 16".) I would like at least 500GB hard drive and processor that is good but not to strong that I have no battery life. I was thinking i5 processor.  I would like it to have enough battery to be able to use through good chunk of day (like 6hr rated or so.)  It needs to be somewhat durable as I know college will take its toll on the computer.  It would be great addition to have a good video card.  I don't know if there is anything out there like this but hope there is.  Please post suggestions or new ideas about what i would need for college.  Thank you for any help!
Luke

Hi Lukedmann,
Thank you for considering Best Buy for the purchase of your next laptop. As we start off the Back to School season you should start seeing the introduction of quite a few new models,  and some that should be able to meet your need. With the way technology advances day to day, this shouldn't be impossible to maintain.
Personally, taking into account any and all biases I have and stuff, theres 4 models i'd point out to you inside my store. Understanding that these are not your only options, and that I think that the aethetic design of the computer (how nice you think it looks) should definitely play a role, i'm sure any of these should be able to meet the demands you specified.
3 Models to Compare
Overall these are pretty close to your price limit, and I chose these assuming you wish to spend 900-1000 on the laptop and already counted in taxes, accessories, softwares etc. Just to let you know I discounted some models to give you the higher quality, however some models which come out to cost less would still meet your specified criteria. Let us know if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Agent Lamar

  • Looking for a new laptop, please help

I am looking into purchasing a new laptop in the next couple weeks in the $700 price range and am wondering what the best options are. I have basically narrowed it down to the Toshiba P745-S4217 and Asus U46E-BAL5. But I also like the sony VPCEG16FM/W and Toshiba R835-P70. Which one is the best bange for the buck? I want something that is fast and not to loud or overheat. I like having good speakers and something that is fast. I know the Toshiba R835-P70 is only 4GB RAM but is it that much slower then the ASUS U46E-BAL5 8GB? I dont do any gaming so that doesnt matter, will just use for school and surfing the web so want something that is fast and built to last a few years. If they are all pretty similar I am thinking the Toshiba P745-S4217 is probably best option due to speakers and blu ray. Finally, besides what is already listed on your site, are there any major differences or things I should know about the four computers I have listed. Thank you for your time and help. Feel free to offer any other suggestions for laptops as well.

No one can answer this for you.  You will get lots of opinions, but you have to decide which of those laptops is right for you.  You'll have to compare keyboards, screens, what software is loaded on it, etc.
Now, for my opinion (remember, you'll get lots of those):  Stay as far away as you can from Sony computers.  They are overpriced, and they have terrible build wuality.  Toshiba has been going downhill the last two or three years, but not as badly as Sony.  Asus products are pretty good, I would not hesitate to recommend them.  THey have been making motherboards for a long time.
Any computer in your price range will easily handle the tasks you stated.  "Fast" is a relative term, and when comparing, the figures are pretty much meaningless .  Another reason to do a hands on comparison in the store.
If a single model in your price range has a lot fo features that the others do not have, then be very wary...that usually means sub-par components used just to get better specs.

  • Looking for a new laptop

    Hi.
Because of an unexpected hardware problem I'am looking for a new laptop.
The last weeks I've informed me a bit of some laptops but I'am not really sure:
My favorite is Samsung R560-Aura P8400 Madril but my last notebook had an ATI graphic card and the last months I was really enthusiastic about the getting better official drivers.
And whats with the the FN-keys, webcam, bluethooth, wlan card and support? Some experiences?
    Thanks, Andreas

  • Looking for a new laptop, I work in finance.  Air book or the macro with retina?

Looking for a new notebook.  I work in finance and travel.  Is the Mac Pro with Retina worth the extra weight or should I go with a Air book?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The MacBook Pro with Retina display is worth, but it's limited. Note that you can't upgrade anything after buying it without voiding the warranty. The same happens with the MacBook Air.
Simply, if you have to run heavy applications, buy the MacBook Pro with Retina display. If not, buy the MacBook Air

Can't speak for the VGA card but the wireless card works nicely with the IWL3945 driver which is included in the latest archlinux installer and is avaible as a package in the repos.
A quick tip though. The IWL3945 driver is new and therefor migth be buggy, some reports has been made but they seem to fix it rather quickly.
If you encounter a problem that cannot be resolved easily you migth atleast consider using the old IPW3945 module+userspace daemon.
Though the IWL3945 driver is to be recommended as it eliminates the need for a userspace daemon.

Your friend is right. the iPod cannot be used to update iTunes. I had the same problem about a year ago, and I just transferred each song using my jumpdrive. It's painstakingly boring, but it will work without wiping anything clean.

  • Looking for a new toy to help your editing workflow?  Try this!

I recently ditched my simple 2-button + scroll wheel mouse for a mouse on steroids: the Logitech G700.  What a difference!  It has 11 customizable functions that can be automatically activated depending on the program you're in!  So you can have a completely unique set of functions for Premiere, Photoshop, AE, Windows, etc, and each set will automatically/instantly be activated whenever that specific program/interface is the active one!
Here are my 2 layouts to give you some ideas:
    Premiere Pro Layout:
    Windows Layout:
You can even assign multi-step macros to keys.  For example, I set one of the keys to: Deselect clips + Add Default Video Transition.  So now, a single keypress will always apply my default video transition to the CTI, even if any clips were selected, just the way it worked in CS6 and I wanted it to keep working in CC!
If you're looking for a simple inexpensive way to improve your editing work, I highly recommend getting a programmable mouse like this one!  If anyone has any other hardware devices that help their workflow, please share so that we can all benefit from the knowledge.
    Cheers!

I am in the market for a new PC for my wife, and she will be inheriting the keyboard and mouse I am using now so I can get new ones. She picked these out to begin with since we were sharing a computer for a while so she will be happy with them.
That looks like a really great mouse. I may just have to take your advice on this one.
Although the newer version looks even cooler: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-G700s-Rechargeable-Gaming-Mouse/dp/B00BFOEY3Y/ref=dp_ob_tit le_ce
My wife would HATE that mouse, but since she will finally have her own again, I can get any mouse I want.
    Very cool. Thanks.

  • Looking for a new 13' or smaller laptop. Do you recommend U330 and U110?

    Hi all,
My 4-year old T42 just died. I'm looking for a new laptop. I want the following:
    13' or smaller
    Lightweight
Good performance for home and work use, may run PS or some authoring tools
May play small games, mainly Internet, movies
    DVD recordable?
    Bugget is up to $1500
I am interested in U330 or U110 (so pretty). Any recommendations?
    Thanks,
    CoCo

    CoCo,
I have found that there sadly isn't much information on this forum about the U110, but I'll offer some comments that perhaps you may find useful.  I also have a Thinkpad T40p that I have had for a few years and like it very much.  It has the SXGA+ screen (1140x1050) which I like a lot.  While it has been a great laptop and pretty portable (less than 5 pounds), my wife and I take a lot of road trips in our Corvette and the T40 is a bit hard to manage in the car (we use it for our map program a lot).  So when I saw the little notebooks (or netbooks) at Costco I was intrigued.
I didn't really like any of the cheaper netbooks that much, except for the nice price of $500 and under, so I started looking to see what else was available.  I found the U110, which seemed to be a comparitively powerful and well built computer (especially when compared to the cheap netbooks), but the price tag of $1500 and up was too much.  I found a slightly used one on ebay still under warrantee for $800, so I bought it.
I started reading up on it on various forums and online reviews and a common complaint about the U110 was that is was slow using Windows Vista.  But a number of opinions recommended Windows XP, and since my other computers (T40 and two desktops) run XP, I thought this would be for me as well on the U110.
When I got the U110, I too was somewhat disappointed in the performance of Vista, although I will admit I'm not familiar with Vista while being very familiar with XP.  So I decided to delete Vista and install XP, which turned out to be somewhat of an ordeal because I could find very little information on this forum or elsewhere regarding the details of the U110 partitioning and other related issues.  It is actually very easy, but it is very helpful if you talk to someone who has done it and can offer suggestions and procedures.
Since I installed XP I am very happy with the performance and it's a great little, and VERY portable, computer.  It will be a great travel computer because of its portability.
With all of that said, I'm not sure I would recommend it for a direct replacement of your T42.  First of all, you said your T42 "died".  Before giving up on it, I'd suggest you go to the Thinkpad forum - Google search for "thinkpad forum" and you'll find it - and go to the T4x Hardware forum.  There is a ton of information there and a lot of people contribute to it.  There are many problems solved, and it is likely your T42 may be salvagable.  It's a great computer.
While I like the U110 a lot, the larger Thinkpad displays are easier to read if you'll be staring at them for long times.  The U110 is fine for quick internet surfing and getting information, but it can't compare to the bigger displays.  What the U110 is great for is being really portable.  If that is your primary consideration, the U110 is your answer.  But if portability is not your primary concern, I'd stick with the Thinkpad.  And pricewise, the Thinkpad will be considerably less expensive than a late model Thinkpad like a T60 or similar.  You can pick up a good T60 for under $600, while I got a good price on my U110 for $800.  Performance wise, the Thinkpad is a real bargain.
The U110 will do what you want it to - DVD recording, small games, internet, movies, etc.  But you mentioned "home and work use", and I'm thinking you might mean this to be your only computer.  While I really like the U110, I wouldn't want it for my only computer - it's just too small.  The display is too small and the keyboard, while just fine for travel, will not compare to larger Thinkpad's.
I haven't seen the U330, but it's my impression that the Ideapads are sort of a lower end product when compared to the Thinkpads.   I won't give up my T40p until I can't fix it, and even then I will buy another one to replace it.  But my U110 is still a great little travel companion.
These are my opinions and impressions.  If you get a U110, please post your own impressions so others can benefit.
    Good luck,

  • TS4062 I've done all of these recommended steps.  My problem is that I have a new laptop that I am trying to sync my iPhone (and iPad for that matter) via Wi-Fi but both devices are looking for the old laptop to sync.  Any other suggestions?

I've done all of these recommended steps.  My problem is that I have a new laptop that I am trying to sync my iPhone (and iPad for that matter) via Wi-Fi but both devices are looking for the old laptop to sync.  My iTunes is version 11.0..3.42, iPhone is 6.1.4, and iPad 6.1.3.  Any suggestions?

All I had to do was complain.  I synced my iPhone to the Windows machine, checked the other account at iTunes prompting (where no apps had shown up previously), reconnected the iPad, and 140 apps downloaded including the App Store.  I have no idea why.

Apple will repair or replace at its discretions, parts found to be defective in materials or workmanship.
You will have to discuss whether your history warrants a complete replacement with the folks at the Genius Bar.
I do not speak for Apple, but it sounds to me like you have been unlucky, but not unlucky enough (or have spent so much time with your MacBook in the shop) to warrant a complete replacement.
You have not provided any details of what the faults were or what was replaced. If they replaced the motherboard, you already got a new computer -- because everything except the drive and the display is on that board.

  • Looking to buy new laptop?

I am in the market for a new laptop. Something I can use to surf the web, iTunes for music, nothing crazy, but still want something with a fast processor and decent graphics. Which models should I take a look at? Thanks

    Hi motherof4kids,
That is a good question and there is a lot to consider.  A lot of laptops should be able to help with your standard kind of school work (unless you are going to school for video editing, which you might need something more powerful) and also download music.  When it comes to gaming, a good video card, memory and processor are probably the top things I look for.  It also depends on how much you are looking to spend on your laptop.
League of Legends doesn't require a whole of graphics, however World of Warcraft can, depending if you want to run on Ultra or not.  Without knowing exactly how much you are looking to spend, something I can recommend is to check out BestBuy.com and type in "laptop".  When looking all "all laptops" you can narrow your search in the left hand column to specifications you'll need.
You can put your price range in there and then compare the specifications to WoW (since that will be the most resource heavy application you are looking to run).  WoW requires a 1.3GHz process, 2 GB's of memory and a 32MB video card.  More than this will certainly help the performance of your game.
I hope that this helps and gives some guidance and let me know if you have any questions.

  • Looking for a new Hard Drive

I am having trouble keeping up with my editing. With grand kids and RVing I am getting footage faster than I can edit. To that end I am looking into a Macbook pro so that I can edit when we travel.
For the new laptop I will need a scratch disk.
I would like a 1TB firewire drive that would be pretty durable. It would be getting moved around much more than the LaCie I am currently using.
    Any recommendations?

The Lacie d2 Quadra and Little Big Disk Quadra (7200rpm model) drives are pretty robust.
I also like the G-Drive and G-RAID mini from G-Tech.
If you are going to travel with a hard drive, get a padded case for it, or a laptop case big enough to store it and your MacBookPro.

  • Requirments for a new laptop.

I need a new laptop. This time I want a machine that I can trace items on screen with touch. On my old tablet ( Is a laptop) the brush, pen, could not keep up to speed with the touch feature of the screen. This time I want one that does. Any suggestion? What should I be looking for in a laptop that this will work or suggestion as to a laptop.
    Thanks

    Hi Dow04468,
My only suggestion around this would be the Wacom Cintiq series, they are not laptops, but for interactivity on a screen, for tracing and such, they are really nice. You might try finding a Wacom dealer in your area and see if you could test one out.

  • I'm looking for a new computer.

I'm looking for a new computer. one that can handle games well. I'm not sure if I should get a destop or a laptop. I like the facial reconzation and at least 4 usb ports, and the numbers on the right side. I like this one alot:
     http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=pcat17005&type=page&_requestid=48256
    and for destops:
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+Pavilion+Elite+Desktop+/+AMD+Phenom%26%23153%3B+II+Processor+/+8GB+...
If you have a destop or laptop to sugest it must meet these standards for me:
    more than 5 usb ports
    hdmi
    500 or more giggz
    windows 7

    @sweetpea79;
There is a few problems with your post.
Your claim that the asus laptops will "play any game out there that is compatible" is not very helpful.  Many games will *NOT* be compatible with either of those laptops.  Stating they will "play any game out there that is compatible" is meaningless.   That exact statement applies to every computer sold, latop, desktop, or netbook.
Your claim that "desktops are boat anchors" that are "not very protable" are humorous at best.  When it comes to gaming and game compatibility, a desktop will always be a better choice than a laptop.
Your anti-virus recommendation is not very useful.  There are other anti-virus products on the market that are tested to be better than Trend Micro.  No solution will give perfedct protection.  To claim that all other anti-virus solutions will leave the user unprotected is completely false.
You claim you were "hacked" because your "cursor moved" without you moving it, when this phenomenon is a know issue with the Microsoft audio control bar; it is enabled by default and can cause the issue you describe with certain sound cards.
Your claim that Norton allowed you to be infected is also misleading.  Chances are whatever infection you had would not have been caught by Trend Micro, either.  FWIW, Norton has won far more editor choice awards and top ratings from reviewers than Trend Micro.  I am not arguing which is better...just stating a fact.
In short, although you are a fan of Asus laptops and Trend Micro, it does not mean either is the best choice for the OP.
