Looking for a professional Pre Amp.

I use a Shure KMS 32 for voice recording for music. I want a professional quality for the final mix. I tested the AVALON 737 and liked the sound but this pre amp is much too expensive. How do I go about looking for the right pre amp? Do you have any specific recommendations? I just need a single microphone, no gimmicks, just quality and hopefully something not too expensive.

>the E-MU which you refer to is the USB Box version. I use the PCI version. I'm not sure they're the same. What do you think?
The quoted specification figures were from the PCI version, which performs similarly to the Lynx II (although the Lynx has more facilities - but that's only a consideration if you actually want to use them). The newer USB version comfortably outperforms the Lynx. Apart from dealers who don't get much of a mark-up from them, I've never heard a single serious complaint about the 0404 from a quality point of view - and I know somebody with
seriously acute hearing who bought one and swears by it. You really don't want to believe dealers - they are only motivated by profit. It's almost worse than talking to manufacturer's reps about their kit!
The only comments I can offer from any degree of experience at all of the other preamps in the list is that by all accounts, the SPL GoldMics have a noticeably 'warm' sound - and with a mic that's already on the warm side, this might be a bit much. I personally wasn't that impressed with the Focusrites when I heard them, but that was under less than ideal conditions.
Since I only have any real interest in mic preamps that are neutral in character, it doesn't take too much to stop me even listening to quite a few - just adding the word 'character' without the 'neutral' to its description is enough to put me off, as a rule. But I would say in general that you get what you pay for, within reason - but you still have to be careful with some mic/pre combinations; if you are just going to buy the one, it's well worth making absolutely sure that the particular combination you end up with is reasonably compatible. You can get reasonably similar results from 'warm' mics with neutral preamps versus neutral mics with warmer ones. But, I have to say that if I was recording a female voice I'd pick the mic first and the preamp second, and it would probably be a warmer mic I'd use because of the relative lack of lower frequency output. With male voices, it's anybody's guess, as they are all different.
In general though, I'd say pick the mic for the vocalist, and use a preamp that tends towards the neutral - you tend to spend rather less time mucking about with the sound that way, simply because you have one less variable to consider.

  • What to Look For when Buying a Used Storm to activate on Verizon Pre-Pay

Hi, I am looking to buy a Storm 9550 refurbished for use on Verizon Pre-Pay and am just wondering what all I need to look for.
    Would something like this work:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Great-BlackBerry-Storm2-9550-2GB-Black-Verizon-Smartphone-WIFI-GSM-Phone-/181217767463?pt=Cell_Phones&hash=item2a316bb027
Or is it more complicated than just finding a Verizon-branded phone?

The lugs that hold the base onto the phone are not strong enough and the base often needs to be replaced. Give the base (the bit with the button on it) a tug to see whether it's broken.

  • Looking for Mac network professional to setup our small business network.

I've installed OS X Server on an iMac within our office to act as a file server and also allow us to access files using a VPN.  Probably should have purchased a Mac Mini Server and will likely go that route in the end.
I'm computer savy, but little networks experience and just can't get this working correctly. If we had more time to dedicate to this and with help from this forum, I'm sure we could get it up and running.  The goal is to get a simple network going that will allow us to access files, etc in the field and at our home offices with the ability to grow as our business expands.
At this time I'd really like to have someone just handle the setup of the network so we can get functionality asap.  I've done some searches and looked for a network professional in our area with experience in Mac networking within a business environment, but haven't had much luck.
If anyone point me in a direction of someone that can help get this going I'd be forever greatful:)
    Location: Southern California (Rancho Cucamonga)

I'm not a rocket scientist but I do have a working mail server and website using a mini mac and os x server (Mavericks).
It all begins with your DNS and I recommend you do use a mac mini with OS X Server as it's designed for that very purpose. You absolutely must get your DNS situation working first. There's a guy in this forum named Mr. Hoffman who is particularly useful (there are others) in this area. He has a website with lots of helpful advice and, in particular, this: http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1436.
However, before you embark on that journey, this is what you'll basically need to do:
You're going to need a public (external/public facing) DNS and a private (internal) DNS. Your private DNS (served by your os x server) needs to live behind some kind of hardware firewall/router to prevent the great unwashed and curious from venturing into places they probably shouldn't be venturing. It's port(s) should never be exposed to the outside world.
Get a static IP from your ISP and register a domain name.
Let your domain registrar provide the external DNS.
You'll want to set up an internal DNS using OS X Server in the 10.0.0.0/16 subnet (it doesn't seem to let you use 10.0.0.0/8 and it really hates 192.168.0.0/24).
The server itself will need to be "self-aware" by setting it's System Preferences > Network Preferences > DNS Server to 127.0.0.1.
Of course, once you get the DNS working you'll want to turn on File Sharing and then (and only then) Open Directory. THen you can begin adding other services such as web, mail, vpn, etc...
I'm sure there is lots more that I've missed but this should do for now. Good luck.

  • Looking for Pre-Rendered Editing / Color Grading Workflow suggestions.

Looking for Pre-Rendered Editing / Color Grading Workflow suggestions.
All my material is rendered via RenderMan, our resolution is 1280x544, and our format is generally .exr in 32 bit space.
Our editor has been converting over to 32-bit tiffs, and using Apple Intermediate Codec for editing, mostly for speed concerns.
We need to re-vamp our workflow so that we can edit our footage, and then do color grading of the edit head to tail to smooth the look between scenes. We want to do this in Color, being fed by Final Cut Pro's timeline.
We want to keep our bit depth as high as possible when coming into Color.
My question is, does anyone here have any workflow suggestions for doing what I am talking about.
I wasn't sure if we should just export and EDL from FCP and try to get Color to load our single frames from that. Or if there is a special Quicktime wrapper we should be using, or converting our 32-bit .exr files into some other format more readily available for using in Color?
Any thoughts would be great, thanks in advance!

You're not going to get anywhere beyond 10-bit. That's it.
Try encoding to 10-bit LOG dpx if you need upscale RGB.

  • Looking for footswitch or stompbox to change amps in Garageband

Sorry I can't find this answer anywhere...looking for a footswitch to cycle/change amps (or even tracks I have set up with different amps ie clean/distortion) in garageband. I have my ipad set up for a live situation and want to be able to change amps with a footswitch or stomp box. Something other than apogee. I've seen Griffin Stompbox and it looks like it would do the trick but since they are promoting it with their app, it doesn't say if it works for this situation in Garageband.

I know it's not a Garageband one but have you thought about iRig Stompbox

  • PRE 8.0 Just looking for a way to delete titles

I have just started using PRE 8.0 and was adding titles yesturday, having learned it in an online adobe tutorial. However I could not find the delete button to remove the title once created. I was dragging different titles from the title menu onto the preview screen and playing with them a lttle bit. I noticed the little red line appearing down in the timeline representing the added title, but could not delete it again. i tried just looking for a delete button or a trashcan. i search all the menus around that screen. i tried highlighting and pressing keyboard delete. i tried right clicking the title in the preview pane and looking for a delete options. I would be glad to be glad to solve this little technique?? Other than that happy with its performance on my new Sony Vaio. I would also be keen to be pointed to a online tutorial to goes slowly though how to make a simple video

You need to use the scroll button along the right side of the timeline to scroll up.
The title is a clip on an upper video track.
You can find out more about using this program in my free Basic Training with Premiere Elements tutorials on Muvipix.com and in my books, which are available on Amazon.

  • Looking for Simple JSTL Example

    Hi Everyone,
I'm looking for an example of a simple Web application that uses "JavaServer Pages Standard Tag Library" (JSTL) -- that doesn't use JDeveloper!
    I have OC4J stand-alone 10.1.3.0.0 on Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack2 with JDK 1.5.0_07
I created and packaged a J2EE application in a EAR file. The EAR file contents:
    META-INF/application.xml
    frstjstl.warContents of "application.xml"
    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <application

</html>My JSTL implementation comes from here:
    http://jakarta.apache.org/taglibs/doc/standard-doc/intro.html
The distribution contains a "standard.jar" file and a "jstl.jar" file (among other things). The "standard.jar" file is included in my WAR (see above) and I have copied the "jstl.jar" file to:
%J2EE_HOME%\jsp\lib\taglibI launch OC4J from the command prompt like this:
java -jar oc4j.jarI deploy my EAR using the following command:
java -jar admin.jar ormi://localhost oc4jadmin xxx -deploy -file frstjstl.ear -deploymentName FirstJSTL -bindWebApp default-web-siteThen I launch my Web browser and enter the following URL:
http://localhost/frstjstlAnd I get the following error message:
    500 Internal Server Error
    OracleJSP: oracle.jsp.parse.JspParseException: /index.jsp: Line # 8, <c:forEach var="httpRequestHeaders" items="${headerValues}">
Error: Attribute: items is not a valid attribute nameThanks (for reading),
    Avi.

    Thanks Qiang.
Yes, when I copy file "index.jsp" to directory "%J2EE_HOME%\default-web-app\testJstl.jsp" it works.
    I use the following URL:
http://localhost:8888/testJstl.jspAnd this is the output I get:
[Format modified to be more suitable to post on this forum.]
    Simplest JSTL
    CONNECTION = [Ljava.lang.String;@7348e
    USER-AGENT = [Ljava.lang.String;@10b8d03
    ACCEPT-LANGUAGE = [Ljava.lang.String;@157011e
    ACCEPT-ENCODING = [Ljava.lang.String;@10a8143
    ACCEPT = [Ljava.lang.String;@ac8360 HOST = [Ljava.lang.String;@1e534cb
    [/pre]
But I guess, since the JSTL related JAR files are part of the default Web application, there is no reason it shouldn't work.
    That's why you said:
Let us do a sanity test first. So now what?
(And, by the way, thanks for your help.)
    Cheers,
    Avi.

  • Looking for a 'Magic Bullet' control

    Hello there
I need to develop a Windows application that will allow users to open dynamic PDF forms, view them on-screen and fill the forms with data. The data may be typed in on the form or chosen from a picklist.
The requirement is for a Windows Forms based solution developed in VB.Net, so ideally I would be looking for a control that I can drop on to a Windows form in Visual Studio.
Given the project requirements, it is vital that the control is capable of all of the following:
    - Open PDF forms in a windows application
    - Respond to click events in the individual editable form fields
    - Allow both user-based and code-based update of form fields
    - Allow saving of partially completed PDF forms for later completion
    - Support JavaScript within a PDF form
I've tried a good few things and the closest I have so far are:
    - Adobe's own control; this doesn't appear to respond to click events from the individual fields within a form when it is displayed, and I also couldn't see how to progrmatically set form field values.
    - O2Solutions PDFView4Net control; this however doesn't support Javascript or appear to allow partially filled forms to be saved.
I'm tearing my hair out over this one...
    I appreciate your help,
    Keith

    Hi,
The item you listed is a pre-amp usually used in conjunction with microphones to provide phantom power (to large diameter mics) and to boost/warm their signal.
From your description, it seems you are looking for an audio interface. An audio interface would convert the incoming signal from analog to digital at the interface, instead of inside the computer, and route the signal into your computer through the firewire or usb (depending on model) port. The advantage is that the AD/DA converter on these units is normally of much higher quality than the one included with the macbook pro and the signal is subject to less interference.
I've linked a unit in the mac store http://store.apple.com/us/product/TQ936Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDA3MA&mco=MjE2MzAxNw which is very popular, but it's a little pricey considering it's only 2 channel but then, for your application, that's all you'll need. There are cheaper alternatives to be found at music hardware sales websites eg. musiciansfriend.com . Again, you'd search for 'audio interface' for a mac.

  • Pre-Amp Xfi Fatali

Hello i bought the Soundblaster X-Fi Fatality Professional Series Xtreme Gamer with 64 mb X-Ram soundcard and was wondering if there is pre-amp on the soundcard for the line in/mic jack. I want to know this so i can decide if its suitable for recording from a Mic for studio/production/mix work. Thanks in advance

I haven't tried to on my system. I went from the Audigy 2 plat. to the X-Fi Platinum Fatalty Champion. I was recording from a dynamic mic and found the sound slightly low even with the input volume turned up. If you use a condensed mic with phantom power you may have better results.
