Looking for a reliable bigger Hard Drive for MacBook

Hi all, I'm running out of space on my MacBook so I'm in the market for a bigger maybe faster Hard Drive, I understand it have to be a 2.5 inch ATA Fujitsu. My wish is to get a 1TB but 500GB or so will do it. I also understand it came with a 5400 RPM and wondering if would be a problem to install a faster 7200 RPM. Please if you have a model or brand you trust, I will appreciate your advice.

Another question for this thread. This regarding backing up the primary HD. I started with my PC because it is in the most danger of crashing. I used ¨CLONE¨ to my external hard drive. My understanding is that this will give me a backup external HD with everything, including applications, settings, data, pictures, mail and all, just in case I need to restore an entire hard drive, as has happened before.
The backup software also has a program for "IMAGE" although the instructions do not say what is the difference. Can you tell me the difference?
It seems to me that in past times, when I thought I backed up everything, the applications were not backed up and I lost any that I had downloaded from the Internet or that I lost the original discs. In one instance I did not lose the original disc, but the required license number. (Microsoft XP and I've lost it again) Try to convince Microsoft you lost that number you need to load XP! I am unsure of what backup software I was using and once it was a technician in Best Buy doing the backup of the PC to change the hard drive.
I have not started new with my MacBook, since it has proven reliable and I have the important things backed up in various ways, if not the best way yet.
So, I am asking what is the difference, if any, between CLONE and IMAGE in backup software language? Also, will EVERYTHING, including applications, settings etc. be backup.

  • I installed a new bigger hard drive and now spotlight does not work with outlook to search for emails

My old hard drive was full so I went to an apple authorized provider to install a new bigger hard drive. They also moved the data and applications from my old drive to the new one. They did not use time capsule because their way was faster. After the installation I did have to reenter the product code key for Office 2011 for the Mac. However, now I find that I cannot do email spotlight searches in Outlook. When I put in the search - it comes up with no results. This is true no matter what the search. Any ideas of how to point spotlight to look in the email folders so I can do searches again. This is a feature I use daily - so I am concerned that I have lost this feature. Also, I am noticing that alot of the settings did not carry over to the new hard drive. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I would recommend starting over and migrate using your Time Capsule backup however DO NOT do it wirelessly, connect using an Ethernet Connection. If you upgraded to Lion from Snow Leopard then follow the instructions in this video, the kid is annoying but he knows what he's doing. Clean Install Of Snow Leopard video. Once you have installed and updated Snow Leopard then update using the 10.6.8 Update Combo, then log into the Mac App Store and re-install Lion and all it's updates. My guess this is an afternoons work.

  • Bigger hard drive for PB 12"?

    hey all,
I've got a lovely PB12" 1.33 w/superdrive, which I use as my real portable machine, keeping my MBP 17" C2D for serious work.
I'm using the PB more and more for downloading podcasts and videos. also it holds my ever-expanding itunes library (which I share over my wireless network with other machines) and my photos. I don't want to use the MBP to hold my itunes library (which is currently about 25GB) because I need to keep its system drive as empty as possible for the high performance I need for my pro work.
so, the PB only has a 60GB hard drive, and it's starting to get harder and harder to keep it from getting too full and running into performance issues. currently I manage to keep about 8GBs free, but sometimes it gets down to as low as 2GBs before I do a clean up.
since I love this machine so much and want to hang on to it.. does anyone know what the options are for putting in a bigger hard drive for this model? I'd love to put in the very biggest capacity it can take! what am I looking at? 100GB tops, or more?
if anyone has had experience upgrading the system drive in a PB12", I'd love to hear about it..
    cheers..

thanks cornelius.. I'm still going to double check with the apple tech tomorrow on the phone, just to be absolutely super sure.. I wouldn't want to buy a 160GB drive only to find out that oops, the PB12" 1.33 was the only mac since 2002 that had a bootROM drive limitation at 128GB, uh, sorry we kind of forgot to mention that in our tech document.
that said, I seriously doubt that will be the case. am still trying to get used to the idea of having 100 extra GBs of space internally on this great little machine..! it's going to be awesome.
as for the RAM upgrade.. I'm still really not sure. the thing is, performance for me on this machine is not really a major issue. it's only a 1.33Ghz G4 with a 167Mhz system bus after all.. my MBP 17" C2D is my performance machine, and I've streamlined it to give me every drop of power it can for working with logic pro (I'm a music composer/producer). the only time my PB gets a little sluggish is when I have say safari, itunes and iphoto open all at once. one of them has to be shut down otherwise I get spinning beach balls of irritation. but it's really not a big deal.. I just have to remember to quit apps when I'm not using them. and as I said earlier, I bought the ifreemem app, which really works fantastically to reset the RAM after I've switched around too many apps, and I get back to normal performance right away. btw, I'd highly recommend that app to anyone. so even though I know that boosting it to the max 1.25GB RAM that this machine can have would be a little nicer, it's not absolutely necessary for me right now. however, I'm really looking forward to not having to constantly archive videos and music and podcasts and photos off this machine just to keep enough free drive space so that it doesn't turn into a complete slug. also, I didn't realise the drive it currently has is only 4200rpm, so moving up to a 5400rpm perpendicular drive is going to be another bonus in terms of performance. I'm totally keeping this machine for a few more years now.. I'd considered replacing it with a macbook, but for not even a couple of hundred bucks this machine is going to be an even better little personal laptop for a while to come..
thanks again to everyone for all the advice.
    all the best

Before you connect any device to a new library go to the Devices tab of the the preferences panel via Edit > Preferences (Windows) or iTunes > Preferences (Mac) and ensure the box next to Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically is ticked. You can now safely connect the device to your computer without the danger of media being automatically deleted or overwritten.
To get all your content off your connect your iPad to your new computer.
Then use a 3rd party piece of software to transfer your content
I have found Senuti useful but there are others listed in the article I linked to in a previous post.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
That will let you transfer your non purchased content
For Purchased content log in to iTunes on the new computer
In Itunes Store click on Purchased under the Quick Links section on the right.

  • Can I get a new and bigger hard drive on my macbook?

Right now I have an 80GB Hard Drive, It keeps getting filled up too easily and I need a bigger hard drive. When I chatted with a person (online) at the apple store they said it couldn't be replaced after it has been formatted or something, unless something was wrong with it. I'm not worried about losing information because everything is backed up to an external hard drive. Why isn't this possible? In January I got this new 80GB Hard drive along with a new battery. I'm wanting to upgrade it to around 120/150GB or something like that, whatever is in the hundreds. Any help would be appreciated. My macbook's specs are posted below. Your MacBook will support a 2.5" SATA drive. The largest drive currently available is 500 GB. Other sizes are 320 GB, 250 GB etc. The Apple tech was likely referring that Apple will not do a free replacement of your drive unless is was defective or failed. However, you can purchase the drive and install it yourself. It is relatively easy on the MacBook, or you can purchase the drive and have Apple or an Authorized Apple Dealer install it for you. The risk of DIY installation is that if you screw up Apple will not be responsible for any damages. If you are interested, please post back for a list of available HDDs and step by step directions and tips for installation.

There's no reason to install a smaller hard drive. In some cases, it may decrease performance.
Your MacBook Pro comes with a 5400 rpm hard drive, so what you can do is to install a smaller, 7200 rpm hard drive, so you will get a better performance. Any 2'5" SATA hard drive will work, but you can have a look at OWC for hard drives > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/
HGST and Seagate hard drives have a good reputation, so you can purchase one of them

  • Can i get a bigger hard drive?

i have the 11 inch macbook air, it keeps saying i dont have enough memory to run programs. Can I get bigger hard drive for it?  we keep deleting from hard drive but can't even back up iphones!  I have the time machine so we backed up a lot but its frustrating.  Am I stuck or can I add more memory to this computer?

See this OWC MacBook air storage upgrade (scroll down the page to the MBA section).

  • Want bigger hard drive and replace boot camp with parallels

Bought the 15" MBP on day one now more than two years ago. The 80 gig hard drive is nowhere near enough now and having to essentially shut down to run boot camp no longer works (I'm an accountant and need to be able to flip back and forth quickly).
    Two questions:
    1) Can I add a much bigger hard drive to my original version MBP?
    2) If so, can I expand my pitiful 5 gig boot camp windows partition to, say, 20 gig and have parallels run it without having to reinstall all the windows programs?
That would be my perfect world, is it possible?

Are you under warranty? If so, you would probably want to get an Apple authorized repair shop to replace the hard drive so you don't risk voiding your warranty. But you can replace it with a much larger one, like the 320 GB Western Digital or the 500 GB Samsung if you can find one. There is another thread on this forum concerning the 500 GB drives. Not all 500 GB drives will fit in a 15" MBP--some are too tall.
Not familiar with either boot camp or parallels, but with the bigger drive, you should be able to easily have a bigger partition for windows. As to whether you would need to reinstall the windows programs, someone more familiar with windows would have to address that part of your question.
    Good luck!

  • Need bigger hard drive.

I have a 80 gb in my minni. Can you get a bigger one or will it be easyer to use hard drive out of my old PC to usb. Can any one give me some ideas?
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   intel

The Mac Mini uses a standard 2.5" hard drive used in most notebooks. Being an Intel Mac Mini, it uses a SATA drive and not ATA/IDE. Installing the hard drive is not something I'd do yourself especially since it is still under a hardware warranty, and if you damage it, you could be culpible for any damages you might cause.
An old PC hard drive will work on the Mac Mini in Mac OS X only if it is formatted FAT32 for read/write, NTFS for read only, but neither format will support installing a bootable Mac OS X operating system. I strongly recommend finding some method of backing up your data before changing hard drives in anycase, as my FAQ explains:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
As FAT32, it still will probably only make documents as backup usable. For applications you will need a Mac formatted hard drive. Not all USB hard drives are Intel Mac bootable, but more Firewire hard drives are. You can swap out that PC hard drive and put it in a Firewire hard drive case like those from http://www.macsales.com/ or http://www.granitedigital.com/
By formatting, I mean erasing the PC data on it and putting a Mac formatting.
If you have an authorized service center near you, they may be able to safely put in a bigger hard drive. The biggest hard drive the Mac Mini will take internally is 160 GB.

  • Can I install a bigger hard drive on my HP Laptop dv9230us

Can I install a bigger hard drive on my HP Laptop dv9230us

Yes and in fact it can accept 2 hard drives. Any 2.5 inch wide SATA laptop hard drive 9.5 mm thick will work and those are available up to 1.5 TB I believe. To add a second hard drive you need a caddy and connector piece sold here:
    http://www.newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_5&products_id=131
There is a link on the page above which will lead you to installation instructions.
If you can give us some idea of what you are looking to do, we can link you to specific places to buy drives at good prices.

  • I am going to buy a bigger hard drive. i am operating on Lion. how do i install my os on the new disk? i can't use time machine.

i am going to buy a bigger hard drive. i am operating on Lion. how do i install my os on the new disk? i can't use time machine.

Plug this new drive as an external drive, boot from lion recovery "command-R" more info here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/recovery/
Open disk utility, format and partition the disk at your will (allways Mac OS plus...) and go ahead with the install, don't care if it tells you to whait thousands of hours, I did get installed in 2 hours and a half last week.
If you can't plug the disk as an external one, you'll have first to do an USB disk recovery utility, as easy as download the recovery utility and install it in an USB disk, you can find anything from the link above, plug the disk as a single master, and boot from the USB you created before.
    Tell me how it went!!!

  • Moving all my Itunes stuff to a bigger hard drive?

Hello, I hope someone can help me out. The hard drive I have all my music stuff on is about to be filled up and was wondering what would be the easiest way to get it all to a bigger hard drive. I was think of unistalling Itunes and then moving all my file to the new HD and the reinstalling Itunes to the new HD too. would that be the only way to got about this or is there an easier way to do it? Thnaks

    Hi meanmuttley29,
You don't need to uninstall iTunes and then move all your files. The most import part is to follow [this instructions|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305451].
    Hope this helps!

  • Can  i replace my 20gb 4th gen ipod with a bigger hard drive?

Can i replace my 20gb 4th gen ipod with a bigger hard drive are there any that fit?
Any help would be greatly appreciated here.

Assuming that the larger device would fit inside of the casing, yes.  However, I'm not aware of any such drives.   You may have to do a bit of digging around online to see if you can find out any more info.

Got a new external hard drive. Transferred all files from old hard drive to new hard drive. Connected hard drive to macbook. How do I get all my files to be recognized by iTunes and my already made playlists??

Trying to download photos from IPHONE, IPAD to IPHOTO in IMAC after installing new hard drive.
How did you import the photos to iPad and iPhone?
If the photos have been synced to the iPhone and iPad using iTunes, you cannot sync them back.
    See this document:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236
You can't reimport pictures synced from your computer to your device back to your computer. You can only import pictures in the Camera Roll or Saved Photos from your device to your computer. If you need to retrieve synced photos from your device:
If your photos are not in the Camera Roll on your devices, save them to the Camera Roll, share them to the Photo Stream, mail the photos, or, if you have iPhoto on the devices, use iTunes Photo Sharing.
    http://help.apple.com/iphoto/iphone/2.0/?handbuch#blnkee26bc1
Save photos to your computer using iTunes
Connect your iOS device to your computer.
Tap a photo, album, event, web journal, or slideshow and tap Share> iTunes.
Tap Selected, or change the photos you want to save (if you are saving a slideshow skip to step 4):
Select different photos: Tap Choose Photos, tap one or more photos, and tap Next.
Select a range of photos: Tap Choose Photos, tap Range, tap the first and last photos in the range, and tap Next.
Select all the photos in an album or event: Tap All.
In iTunes, click the button for your device and click Apps at the top of the window.
Below File Sharing, select iPhoto (in Apps).
Select the Shared Photos folder under iPhoto Documents.
Click Save To and select the location on your computer where you want to save the items.
To view your photos, go to the Finder and look in the location you selected above.
