Looking for a reliable NAS Solution for my Mac Pro?

I upgraded my Mac Pro to the new one when they first came out. I needed a place to house the hard drives that were in the previous machine. I purchased a NAS enclosure for four hard drives at Micro Center, but the connection often drops, freezes or crashes. I am really worried about this potentially damaging the hard drives in the NAS enclosure.
Can anyone recommend a good, reliable NAS enclosure that will support SATA hard drives up to 3TB each in capacity?
Thanks.

And instead of say a nice reliable Thunderbolt enclosure?
Have a look on http://www.macsales.com/thunderbolt -
they have a good collection or are you in need of something that works on a LAN and makes NAS essential criteria?

http://www.muratec.com/new/support/drivers.asp does not appear to support that model at all on the Mac.
Some open source drivers* may exist to support it.

  • Can an iMac be used as a monitor for a Mac Pro?

    Hi all,
I'm getting nowhere looking in the search, so I'm hoping someone can clear something up for me:
is it possible to use an iMac as a display for a Mac Pro?
I am beginning to think I'd better get a Mac Pro, but I already have an iMac, for which I've been researching getting external storage so I can do Final Cut Studio editing and back up of it all... as someone suggested, might be better in the long run to just get it all in the Mac Pro, and have the option and simplicity to upgrade as and when... but then there's the need for a display for the Mac Pro, which does whack the price up... but if I could use this iMac, what a beautiful monitor...
I thought someone said that Final Cut would not allow another computer to be attached though... is that the case, anyone know?
Thanks for any knowledge and help, much appreciated... I'm learning to not rush into anything, as you learn more the whole picture seems to change!
    Cheers, Syd

The current 27-inch iMac can. Other iMac models can't outside of a VNC setup or ScreenRecycler; all such solutions require a standalone monitor for setup and troubleshooting.

  • RAID setup for a Mac Pro

I'm trying to figure out what would be the best configuration for my Mac Pro tower as far as storage and backup is concerned. I want a RAID drive with hot swappable slots but I'm not sure what the best solution is. Apple's SAN and xServe seem far too sophisticated for my needs (not to mention pricey). I bought a Norco DS-500B eSATA RAID storage array but the RAID controller card is a PCI-X and incompatible with my machine (although the documentation says it's totally compatible...weird). And so in my investigation as to what card to get to replace the one provided, I couldn't find any reviews on this product, save one which said that the array is very bad and will destroy all your hard drives. Sooo...I'm returning the array in search of a new one, but again my investigation has turned up very little. Am I the only one? Or am I out of touch with the real solution?

What's missing in your post is two of the most important elements.
How much storage do you need?
There is a myriad of options if you want 2-5TB of space. Not so many if you want 2-5 petabytes of space
How much are you prepared to spend?
You have many, many options at $100,000, but no so many at $100
The other thing to consider is that by and large, price reflects quality - either in reliability or performance (or both).
If your budget is, say, $2000 you have to decide whether you're better off buying a budget 5TB system or a pro 2TB system - the latter system clearly has less capacity but may offer higher performance and/or reliability. Any RAID system is only as good as all the parts, and the physical drives are only a small element there. The controller, internal electronics, cabling and even interface can have just as much impact on a reliable RAID system (almost any RAID system can recover from a failed disk, but a burned-out controller is harder to recover from).

  • How do I use Airport Extreme to act as a wireless receiver for a Mac Pro?

    Hello -
I'm trying to use an Airport Extreme (1st Generation) as a wireless receiver for a Mac Pro but I can't figure out how.  My main modem / wireless router (non-Apple) is upstairs.  My Mac Pro is down stairs.  I'm looking to get internet connection for that Mac Pro downstairs.  Is it possible to use the Airport Extreme to connect the Mac Pro to the wireless internet provided by my wireless router?
    Thanks for the help.
    Nathan

Is it possible to use the Airport Extreme to connect the Mac Pro to the wireless internet provided by my wireless router?
Unfortunately, Apple designed their routers to work with other Apple routers. It would be extremely unilikely that the AirPort Exteme could be configured to work with a router from another manufacturer.
The AirPort Extreme would need to be configured to "Extend a wireless network", but an error message is almost surely to occur when you try this.
There are other alternatives, but they would involve more hardware. Post back if you are interested.

  • Where can I obtain the AHT on disk for my Mac Pro 4.1?

Where can I obtain a disk (iso) of the AHT for my Mac Pro 4.1 (latest OS X Yosemite) that I am busy upgrading?

If you can fiddle with file permissions without going nuts, the original gray discs or the downloads mentioned (once the .dmg is mounted) provide a roughly 60 to 100 MByte .diagnostics [invisible] directory at:
    /Volumes/disc_name/System/Library/CoreServices/.diagnostics
You can see this folder (on the DVD or in the download) with the Finder by looking in CoreServices, using the Find command and specifying name .diagnostics and Visibility [invisible].
Open a second Finder window and navigate to the comparable place in the current Directory structure:
    /System/Library/CoreServices
drag and drop the .diagnostics directory from the DVD or the download in one window to the current Core Services folder in the other window. Observe carefully to see that it actually does the copy, as Find-ing it in the current directory structure is quirky.
You may have to authenticate as Admin, or you may already have access --
-- otherwise you can change the permissions of the current CoreServices folder to allow you to Read & Write
-- don't forget to change permissions back if you modified them.
NOW try Restart and hold the D key.

  • SSDs for 2008 Mac Pro

I'm thinking about buying an SSD for my Mac Pro (see specs in my signature), any recommendations?  I've been a big fan of products from OWC in the past, so I'm considering their Mercury line.  On the other hand, Crucial drives are a bit cheaper (especially on Amazon).  Question: would there be any point in my getting an M4 from Crucial rather than a V4?  My understanding is that the primary difference is the 6gb/s vs. 3gb/s transfer rates, but that my Mac Pro can only handle 3gb/s anyway.
I'm still on Snow Leopard for now, but I'm looking into whether or not Mountain Lion will be a worthwhile upgrade for me--still not sure about compatibility of certain key apps in my workflow.

The main improvement in performance in a Mac Pro is establishing a boot drive with only System, Library, Applications and the hidden Unix files including paging/swap.
The bulk of the performance increase is not from the speed of the Boot Drive, but from what it is NOT doing -- it is not moving the Data Drive heads away from your data files to go "snacking" for system files or Paging in the middle of your production work. At a cost of tens of milliseconds for every access plus that much time again to get back to the Data areas.
ANY separate drive will produce the majority of  the improvement.
A faster drive will produce a slight incremental improvement. A low-latency SSD will produce another slight incremental improvement. These incremental improvements will be most perceptible in a very slightly faster boot-up time and very slightly faster Application launch times.
You are concentrating on the absolute LEAST important issues, that will have the smallest, possibly not even perceptible performance impacts.
My Advice: Get a Boot Drive that is cheap and live happily ever after.

  • Are the new displays for MacBooks only - Options for a Mac Pro User?

I am currently running 23 inch displays in our small design studio (4 workstations). I need a new or a second display for my own Mac Pro. I hate the new 24 inch display. I cannot imagine running Final Cut Studio on this glossy screen. So is anyone else out there in this situation? Looking for other choices? I want to stay in the Apple line up if possible but now I am even looking at Dells, as I feel Apple will only continue with the glossy screens.
Are any pro-users in video or photography using the new 24 inch displays? and I mean users who do this for a living. Thanks everyone?

    Hello!
Sorry it took a while to notice your post. There are two options for your mac pro to use the new 24 inch cinema display. The ATI Radeon 4870 HD has the mini-display port on it, and the Nvidia GT120 also is an option. Personally, I'd go with the 4870 as its a much better graphics card.
You can find them on the Apple store's site under DISPLAYS/Graphics
    Hope this helps.
Now, just to clear something up. If you have a 2008 mac pro, you can run the GT120 if you prefer.

  • Options for second Mac Pro display

I have been looking for a second display for my Mac Pro. Since it won't be used all of the time I don't want to spend the money for the Apple display. I recently tried a Samsung T240 24" HD monitor but had to return it because it caused severe eye strain. I can use the 23" Apple display all day long with no problem, but an hour with the Samsung caused eye strain no matter what combination I set for brightness, contrast, etc. The "Apple Expert" at Best Buy claimed that it was because the graphics card doesn't support high definition, but his answers to some other questions didn't impress me. Will I have problems with any HD monitor, or was it this particular Samsung? Any suggestions?

I have solved the problem by purchasing a Dell S2209W display. It is an HD monitor and seems to be working fine with no eye strain. Of course, it is not as nice as my 23" Apple display, but at $239 it is perfectly adequate for use as a second display. I still don't know why I had problems with the Samsung, but I am happy for now.

    Buy yourself a 250GB Samsung SSD $150 or 500GB $250 are best.

  • Best Router for a Mac Pro with Leopard

Can anyone suggest a good router to purchase that would work with no problems for a Mac Pro with Leopard?
I would be connecting to the router via an ethernet cable, but I'm looking specifically for a g and b router, because my roommate has a Dell and she uses a wireless usb adapter to connect wirelessly. We have a modem (cable or DSL, I think?) and high-speed internet service.
I've heard that some routers are having problems with leopard and macs in general, so I wanted to be sure I'd be getting a good one before I go out and spend a hundred bucks or more.

    a linksys wrt150n i got mine for about $99 to 129
    and its pretty good
Since the cd comes with pc only software follow these instructions
1 hook up the router to the modem
    2 connect to the router
if you want to add a password continue the steps
3 you may have to plug in the router to your mac if not skip this
4 go to http://192.168.1.1 using the password admin
5 now your in the routers menu
6 change the network name if you want to
to add a password go to wireless once you click on it under you will see wireless security select your setting oh by the way passphrase is a name for password if you didint know.
sorry if that was a mouthful if you still dont understand
    email me at [email protected]
it works great with my imac my dell inspron and even my ipod touch

  • CPU stand for a Mac Pro?

Does anyone know of a good source for a CPU stand suitable for a Mac Pro? I know of a couple that I could get in Japan, but shipping or a plane ticket is a bit more then I want to spend.
    Something like the following items.
    http://www.assiston.co.jp/?item=831
    http://www.pawasapo.co.jp/products/mac/prs56.php

Kujako-  I do have a CPU 'skate' that I had a Mac Pro on for 4 yrs.   I don't know what the metal is but after 4 yrs use it doesn't flex so is sturdy.
I received the skate 4 yrs ago as a gift; it has no identification on it (manufacturer or source), giver not around so can't ask for info. Needs a bit of cleaning but  not hard & can do.
It looks a lot like the pics of the Japanese one but not as shiny, wheels smaller.
The base ht is ~3 1/4", wheels are nylon & ~1" diameter, length of inside bed=17.5", width=8".
Wheels don't lock, only go forward & back, not side to side.
If you're interested I'll take pics -1st ones didn't turn out, need better lighting, also not sure how to get in in here but will try if you are interested and I can get instructions for getting a pic on this site. Embarrassingly non-techy at the moment.
The Mac Pro went south--something elect. & I've given up, not worth my effort to do more. Have a new iMac.
So I'm willing to UPS the skate if you're interested in it.  Feel free to say No. Just would like to find a good home for a Useful Object.

Best look for usb/fw audio interfaces which can be inexpensive and easy to get up an running.
There are many many cards on the market all depending on how many I/O you are chasing and overall sonic results.
If your in the market for entry level cards - check out
    www.m-audio.com
    www.focusrite.com
    www.digidesign.com
    or
if your in the semi-pro market, look at www.rme-audio.com (mainly the fireface series)
My pick if you are an entry level user wanting a great 2in/2out interface, have a look at the Duet by Apogee.
