Looking for a Rewind like app for Tiger

Back when I had my Performa 6360 running OS 8.1, I bought a utility called Rewind from Power on Software. The app could restore my Mac to an earlier date, or restore any file that had been deleted from the trash,etc.. It was more poweful than the similiar features found in TTP, and Norton.
Does such a utility exist for OSX? Rewind failed (and why Power on is trying to hide any indication that it ever existed) for a number of reasons. For one the utility slowed down my Mac by 50%, and for two the utility created huge archives, and often corrupted its restore rescue soft boot image.
I know such a utility may not be as essential in OSX as in the earlier OS. That os would often crash for one. My ibook has crashed no more than 20 times in the 10 months I have owned it. My Performa crashed that many times in 1 month alone.

You wrote: "But I am afraid that Retrospect is not the same as Rewind, or Norton Go Back for Windows."True. However, since you have Retrospect, if you're using Backup Sets for backup, you can Restore a disk for which there is a Backup Set to any point in time for which a backup session exists.
Perhaps the reason there is no Rewind or Go Back for Mac OS X is because it is far more stable than Windows, as you note.
Next time you're looking for solutions, I recommend searching MacUpdate or Version Tracker. The user-submitted reviews accompanying the listings are helpful in sorting the wheat from the chaff. Both commercial and shareware/freeware solutions list on those sites and you'll generally find an answer faster than posting here.
You wrote: "Therefore I have come to the conclusion that this is yet another limitation of owning a Mac...No question my XP box has many advantages, but its also quite obvious that OSX is far more stable and secure than XP."Only you can decide for yourself which platform fits your needs best.
Good luck!

  • Looking for Tiger compatable network logging tool/program

I have a client that has become email blacklisted. They are hosting their own email server on a Mac OS X server. However some of the clients in the building are PC. Not sure if someone is using them as relay or they have a zombie PC.
Looking for a program we can run on a Mac at the MOPE of the internet connection and log incomming and outgoing traffic. We want to determine whats going on. Anyone have a reccomendation? I looked at Net Monitor, but its logs look to vague. Only showing IP address and a connection, not whats going on with that connection. We are looking for something like Net Monitor but with packet sniffing I guess. Anyone ?

I've been blacklisted twice by Spamcop...

I assure you that I've not spammed once, nor are any of my machines compromised, never "used" for spamming... either the IP was Spoofed, or the fact that I didn't have a Static IP, means that IP was garnered by someone that was spamming or compromised.
If they are Macs, Little Snitch tells you when a program tries to send info to the internet so you can see what's going on in the background!

If there are PCs involved, 40% chance it's infected I read!

  • Looking for Video playback app, like a DDR

Hello, I'm looking for a program to cue up and playback quicktime files for live broadcast off of the computers hard drive. Kind of like a DDR but all running on the computer. It needs to have the ability to cue up files based on keystrokes, like 123 enter = playack of 123, and be pretty quick about it.
I found Playbackpro.... at WWW.DTVideolabs.com but I'm looking for some other options.
    Thank you.

Unfortuately I cant load the clips into quicktime since it's crashing when I load them..
Just hoping for a light weight app that's sole function is video file inspection

  • Looking for a simple Text App with options like columns, lists etc

I am looking for an app that lets me do simple things like type lists of things , create columns etc . PLEASE tell me that my Mac Pro with Snow Leopard already has the ability to do this somewhere and that i dont need to buy "iWork" or "Excell" to perform this basic function. Thanks

If you're talking about a simple word processor, then Bean (http://www.bean-osx.com/Bean.html) will be worth a look. It's simple, has the ability to create text columns, and best of all, is free!
NeoOffice (Mac port of OpenOffice) is fantastic if you need a complete Office suite (http://www.neooffice.org) - also free. Its spreadsheet app is called Calc.
Mac Mail and iCal can do 'To Do' lists, and there's also plenty of free apps that do simple to-do type lists.
When you mention 'lists' the app that comes to mind is OmniOutliner (http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omnioutliner/) but it's not free.

  • Looking for a journaling app that looks like and old fashion journal and alowws dictation and editing

Looking for a journaling app the allows dictation and editing and would look like and old fashion journal book that I can put in my iBook shelf.

You won't be able to put an app in iBooks. The only things you can put in iBooks are eBooks and PDFs. As far as narrowing down the list of possible apps, what ones have you looked at already when you searched the app store?

  • Looking for an app that will edit photos like Skitch

This is probably the wrong place to put this but maybe I can get help with finding a better than app like Skitch for photo manipulating.
Skitch is close but there are a few things I don't like and find it hard to use for my purpose.
I like to be able to change file name, adding arrows with narrative, and resize using pixel count and not percent.
An example would be FastStone Image viewer for a PC. Actually this has much more than I need but it is a good program.
    Thanks

What system is your MacBook currently using?
Some of the titles formerly available had not been updated to later OS X systems, and a few that I liked, do not appear to be available anymore from their authors source pages to download.
One I liked for a few years, went by the odd name 'ToyViewer for Mac, version 5.1.1' - free - & was in a 6.5GB download zip file. I saved the file but it was said to be for Leopard 10.5.x and a different one at the time was available for Tiger 10.4.11. Somewhere I probably still have a zip for the earlier Tiger version 4.x. in an archive.
There may be something out there that isn't a high-end image editor or image manipulator, at a fair price. Names like Acorn, Pixelmator, Graphic Converter, and then there's Gimp... are out there; plus a monthly fee to use some photoshop?
    see: image editor free= https://www.google.com/#q=mac+os+x+image+editor+free
Years ago, I'd found I can resize, edit, rotate and whatever on the desktop of my almost antique Mac in the Finder, using screenshots. Also to view an image, I can open a browser (mine go nowhere on launch) and drop in the image; then pull the window larger or smaller and the image fits that size automatically. I can screen capture in Finder. And the saved captures are .jpg since I changed the default, because .png did nothing for me.
That method plus  'ToyViewer for Mac' (leopard version, may work in snow leopard) has worked fine for me. Beyond my needs, actually. And I've seldom used the included Image Capture application in the OS X, and manually save images from digital camera into folders, so I avoid iPhoto's intervention and storage ideas totally. Even though it is installed.
If I were in the area, I'd give you a copy of the zip for ToyViewer v 5.1.1. (Maybe it won't work in SL10.6.8.) It can do more than expected for what was a free license application by an author in japan. His page is gone...
PS: yes, the system default viewer, Preview, can do quite a bit.
And so do screencapture keyboard shortcuts in Finder.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Looking for app to quickly with keyboard shortcut (i.e. Control   R) resize photos like I can do with Irfanview in Windows

    Hello,
I am trying to switch from Windows to OSX but must first find Mac equivalent solutions for daily tasks performed in Windows.
    1. I am looking for an app to quickly resize photos using keyboard shortcuts, i.e. Control + R, just like I can do with Irfanview in Windows.
    2. I am looking for an app which will quickly resize multiple photos like I can do with Irfanview.
    3. I am looking for another (or the same) light weight app to quickly convert and combine one or more jpgs to PDF. The windows app I am currently using is called JPEGtoPDF from www.compulsivecode.com.
Many thanks for helping me switch to OSX!

Photoshop Elements has the ability to sync and save photos in Adobe Revel with the use of mobile albums. Photoshop Elements is a consumer product that is not included in creative cloud. Photoshop is the professional photo editing app that is included in Creative Cloud.

I am looking for an application that would allow me to open a word doc, and take notes in the .doc using a stylus pen.  I'd then like to convert those notes to text, and then be able to copy / paste those notes into an email.  Does this app exist?  It seems like we were doing these same types of things with Palm Pilots years ago, one would think this would work with iPads?

I don't believe it will open a Word document, but Writepad allows for handwritten conversion of notes to text and then to email. Might help you some of the way...

  • Looking for IM app that is like the one on iPhone

I am looking for an app for IM that is like the one on the iPhone whereby I do not have to sign up for another account and can use my present email address.
    Thanks

You mean the one with the green icon with a white chat bubble? If so, that is the messaging app for SMS or MMS. It doesn't exist on the iPad as the iPad is not a phone and therefore does not have SMS/MMS capability (though there are apps you can use to fake it).

  • Im looking for a phone finder app..like Life360

I don't think I'm using the app store correctly.  I go to the blue round circle witht the A on it and try the search feature.  I'm looking for a phone or devicing finding app. Ihave one on my Samsung called Life 360 and also put it on an Iphone but don't know why I can't find it on the Macbook.

Basically, press Home and the sleep button simultaneously. The screen blinks, you hear a click, and the screenshot's saved to the camera roll. There's some finesse involved in the button pressing, however. Some people claim you have to press and hold Home first, then tap the sleep button. Just be prepared to experiment. I'm on OS 3.0. Other OS versions may behave differently.
