Looking for a spot to buy RAM

Looking to upgrade iMAC G5 (1.6ghz) from 512mb to 2G. Where is a good place on the internet or in shop to buy RAM??
And is it easy to install the RAM or self? I've done it a bunch of times on a PC but never on a MAC.

Installing RAM on the iSight is very easy, there's a compartment on the bottom that opens, and you just insert the RAM.. A good place to buy it is smalldog.com or macsales.com, but Google for other vendors and make sure to look for RAM that comes with a lifetime guarantee.

Any recommendations on an extra long black charging/sync cable for iPads? Found one but it does not actually charge. Desperately looking for a source to buy in quantity. Any recommendations welcome.

If you're only looking for a longer charging cord, have you considered just buying an extenstion cord? Obviously, that won't work if you're connecting it to a computer but should do fine if you're using the power adapter.

    Hi, X, et al,
I too have been using these exact same Corsair DIMMs with no problems since April. The "however" part is that I would get 1600mhz CL 9 DIMMs instead at this juncture. They don't cost much more, and if you want to upgrade your existing 1333mhz RAM at some point you can, without throwing away all four DIMMs. Yes, you can mix 1600 and 1333 - they will be clocked at 1333. Just make sure to get CL 9 and not CL 11. For example:
    1600 mhz CL 9 $50 8GB
might work out for you. I do prefer buying from Amazon over Newegg though. Less return hassles.
Anything higher than 1600mhz is a waste - it's the fastest clock rate your chip set can handle.

This Feedback about the Discussions forum is intended for questions about how to use Apple Discussions
......but not sure where this one should go: looking for info & advice as to what Mac configuration I should build/buy with a $2000 --> $2500 budget.
Thought it would be fun to post a 'Wish List' from other Mac users if they could set up a system from the ground up with the above budget limitations.
I'm currently an iLamp user who's in need of more computing power for working with digital photos and just recently I started shooting underwater video so I need a bit more power than what my iLamp can deliver.
But first: where do I post this question???

    Hi, Modiver -
There is no forum in Discussions perfectly designed for your type question - all forums are specific to certain hardware or software. Perhaps it would be a good idea for our Hosts to add a forum for this purpose.
You can do some prescreening of your own in order to find the best hardware forum to discuss this in. A good place to do that is in the Apple Store - check out the specs of the machines in your price range. Don't forget to allow space in your budget for additional items, such as for a monitor for the Mac Pro or Mac Mini models, and for software.
For example, are you looking for a laptop type machine, or a desktop type?
Do you need, or envison a need for, any expandability beyond adding RAM?
Examine the specs of current models, run up a cost total including ancillary hardware (extra RAM, monitor if needed, etc.), and compare the results. Then go into the hardware forums for the two or three best choices and discuss the models vs. your needs with the folk there.

Looking for suggestion buying 8GB RAM for my latptop T420
I recently bought a used T420 which came with a 2GB from an online site. Machine woks all great with the current config. I would like to install 8GB RAM to make it faster as I have been installing lot of softwares on it.
Bit confused what to look for as products have keywords like DDR3 / PCI slots / 1333MHz, 1.5V .. not sure what to get.. can someone suggest what should I be getting ? If possible can you share a link ..
    Thanks.

    This is from Toms Hardware;
"2x4GB allows to run in dual channel, but no, not 2 times faster, a single stick operates as a 64bit device in dual channel the two sticks operate together as a 128bit device which in reality provides for up to an appr 15% gain in performance vs single channel - the lower the latency at a given freq the better performance, however have to take into account the freq also a 1333/CL7 set can't touch a 2133/9 set in sheer performance + the higher the freq the higher the bandwidth so the more data can be dealt with in a single clock cycle"
However, the best choice for you now, since you're upgrading your RAM is to go Full Monty on it and get 2x 8GB paired, because if you only decide on getting one, then you might have a hard time finding a matching 2nd module later. But there would not be a significant performance hit you'd take from getting a different module, not anything you'd notice at least. It's just good practice to get them paired. My 2 cents.

  • What to Look For when Buying a Used Storm to activate on Verizon Pre-Pay

Hi, I am looking to buy a Storm 9550 refurbished for use on Verizon Pre-Pay and am just wondering what all I need to look for.
    Would something like this work:

Or is it more complicated than just finding a Verizon-branded phone?

The lugs that hold the base onto the phone are not strong enough and the base often needs to be replaced. Give the base (the bit with the button on it) a tug to see whether it's broken.

  • What One Specification Should I Look for When Buying Optical 5.1 Speakers for the iMac 27" i7?

Hi. I have an analog 5.1 (it came from my previous PC setup) now but only the subwoofer works, the controller for its satellite speakers maybe have been busted by the high voltage from the outlet (I've since gotten a nice AVR). If replace it since the late 2009 iMac and Macs in general only do surround sound (5.1 or higher) if it's not analog. I've read somewhere that is should be digital or optical.
When I look for the specification that'll make this Mac do 5.1 surround, what should I look for in the speaker's specifications. I believe the non-analog 5.1 speakers are way more expensive, I'll probably buy one used but what brand and model can anyone recommend that's not that expensive, iMac/Mac compatible and will be easy to setup (you just plug it in into it's the headphone jack at the back) that'll do 5.1 on Lion and Snow Leopard (I have both installed for backup OSes and experiments). Thank you in advance.

  • Need advice on what to look for when buying an external HD

    Hello iBook enthusiasts,
I want to buy an external HD for backing up my important documents, and for having a way of booting up just in case the iBook should fail. I have searched some of the old posts, but I am still a bit confused.
So far, it seems that the most important criterion is that the drive have FireWire in order to be bootable.
I don't want to spend a ton of money. Somehow, I get these emails from Buy.com, advertising their specials. For example, they had a 250G one for $100 (although that particular deal is now expired). This seems like a good deal to me. Is that right? Should I try to buy the largest or smallest one that's in my price range? If iBook does die, I would like to still be able to use the HD with whatever replacement I get.
Also, is there any particular brand that I should either look for or avoid? How do I know these things?
Anyway, sorry these questions are so vague. Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Anna:
Yes, rule no. 1, Firewire or FW/USB
    2. Largest HDD you can afford (having more space than you need it not a problem; needing more space than you have, is.)
    3. 7200 rpms. (Most of them are, but not all)
Here is a list of some of the best buys already sorted for 200-300 GB.
Different folks like different manufacturers. I have had my LaCie for 2 years. No problems. I like it for it's compact size and elegance.
Here are some good hints from Dr. Smoke on Backup and Recovery. Instead of Retropect, which I could never quite figure out, I use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper.
Post back with further questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • What to look for when buying a used MacBook Pro? Tips

Here to acquire a few tips on purchasing a used Macbook Pro. I am not graced with an Apple Store in my area, so I must rely on my own sub par geek wit and with the help of yours.
    Tips I know.
Checking Battery Cycles and mAh capacity.
    Looking for third party applications.
    Request the original StartUp/Install Disks.
    Checking memory ratios...

Shop your local and nearby Craigslist websites, starting with:

    Avoid Ebay.
If third-party applications or other software are included, they add nothing at all to the value of the machine unless you are given the original installer discs for them. Otherwise, they are just pirated software that you can't reinstall if you ever need to.

  • Buying an external DVD burner, what to look for?

Hi, I am buying an external DVD burner in the morning, anything I should look for feature wise, any models which are recommended?
    Cheers, S.

Patrica, we'll forgive you this once! For future reference at the top of each Discussions Forum section there's a blue "Post a New Topic" link - that's where you start. Anyway as to your problem as to what to do now. You can ignore the "Easy Media Creator" disc - this is an application for Windows machines.
All you need now is a blank DVD to record onto. Usually LaCie include a complimentary DVD-R disc - didn't you get one?
It's useful because it will give you a good idea as to which brand of disc works best with your burner. My LaCie likes Maxell and Verbatim but not TDK even though it's on LaCies's approved list (which you can find on their website). Buy a small pack until you are sure they work OK. Whether you get DVD-R or DVD+R is up to you, but the minus format tends to work better with domestic DVD players.
I don't know what you want to burn onto DVD - is it files or movies? If it's the former you have all the software you need in Disk Utility. As far as I know iDVD on the other hand doesn't work with an external burner (someone please correct me if I'm wrong!) you need to buy something like Toast for that. I notice also that you're in the PowerBook forum although you have an iMac! Does this not have an internal DVD writer? I thought all versions of the G5 had a SuperDrive? My final bit of advice to you would be to get yourself whichever of these http://www.missingmanuals.com/ you feel you might need. Certainly the 10.3 book will help you enormously. Good luck.

  • Shopping For Ram: What to Look For?

I'm looking at NewEgg for ddr2 67mhz ram for my MBP (mid 08) and I see a "cas latency" of either 4 or 5 (mostly 5's).
What should I look for when getting ram? Is there much of a difference between 4 or 5? Any other "features" I should look for?
    Thanks

I'm reading that the ram I'm looking at (around $35-$40) is "slow" ram and not worth it. Is this true? Computer use= occasional game of Tiberium Wars, Office, iTunes, occasional video encoding, internet apps such as safari (with LOTS of tabs open), ichat. I run a lot of these "small" apps at once though and my computer has seemed to be slowing down a bit (I'm reinstalling the system tomorrow)...
Anyway, any more insight would be appreciated.

  • Buying Used iMac - What to look for?

    Hello,
I'm a devoted mac user. I currently own a late 2008 unibody Macbook, and have been looking for an upgrade. I came across a used iMac posting on a craigslist-like website. The configuration is a low-end mid-2011 21" iMac (quad core i5, 4gb, 500gb).
I asked the seller for the serial number and checked it out the support site. The warranty is due to run out on Thursday, just enough time for me to buy extended AppleCare. The price seems reasonable (approx $730 whereas a new iMac is $1200), and I've asked to see the iMac in person tomorrow. I wanted to know what to look for when making the final decision.
Also do you think I should hold out for an Ivy Bridge iMac (rumoured to be coming soon??) or will it not make a difference for normal coding/browsing (no photo/video editing/gaming)? One factor discouraging me is that Apple has hitched up the prices for the newly released Macbooks here in India (the base 13" pro used to be $1250, now $1530!!!).
    Thanks a lot!
