Looking for a tiny MTA

Hi guys.
I'am looking for a tiny MTA only to forward my user mails to my real mailbox.
Perhaps there is a smarter solution than using a MTA daemon. A script using msmtp/ssmtp or so...
Thanks in advance

man crond
You can send the output anywhere you want (-m), you can use a script (-M) so I guess you could just append it to the end of a file?

  • Looking for 2x2 drum control pads for Logic

    Hi all, happy new year.
I'm looking for a tiny control pad instrument with only 4 pads - small enough that I can sit anywhere (eg plane seat - economy :)) and tap out rhythms.
    Any suggestions out there?
    Cheers,

  • Looking for note taking software to use with a graphics tablet

    Hello folks,
I am trying to find a software that would allow me to interchangably use typing and writing/drawing on a graphics tablet smoothly.
I'm looking for something that would essentially provide a 'blank sheet of lined-paper' where i can quickly type what my professors are saying, as well as easily draw whatever they are drawing. Also, since I am studying engineering, I would need something that I can easily write math symbols and equations so I can use it as scratch paper.
At the same time, I am looking to save trees and money, as well as keep organized and simplicity when it comes to archiving.
I have tried Microsoft Word 2008's notebook view, and this is currently the closest thing to what I want, but it favors mostly the text side of what I want (of course), and isn't very good in the drawing part. It also isn't very smooth when I try to do practice math/physics/engineering problems on it, nor is it very good at drawing molecular structures (O-Chem)... but for the most part, it gets the job done. It is also a headache because when you zoom in a lot to make it easier to write (mind you, I am using a tiny macbook screen..), the title bar also zooms in, and ends up taking half of the screen, making zooming in practically useless. (the title bar is also locked, so even as you scroll down, it stays in the top half.)
I have also tried Adobe Acrobat Professional 7, where I simply made a blank notebook from some image online, and I use it as scratch paper. When it comes to drawing, it is very smooth, but it's a headache sometimes, because after writing something and pausing for a second or two, the pen tool automatically becomes a 'selector' tool, and so if i want to draw over what I previously wrote, it changes to selector and instead of writing over, it drags and drops the object around a bit. The tolerance for that is really high too, and i'd have to bring the pointer about half an inch or so before I can start writing something again. I also haven't given the text a try yet, but it lets me make collapseable text boxes, so that is good for further annotating my equations and drawings, but isn't very useful for a full-lecture class (i.e. biology)
I also don't even want to consider photoshop, because it's basically too powerful, and I don't want my laptop fans going off in-class (its SUPER loud when it happens...) and I need it to last the day.
    So just a sum up:
I'm looking for a good note-taking software (for mac) that will allow me to smoothly use my graphics tablet AND be able to type.
MS Word '08 and Adobe Acrobat are close... but aren't quite to what I want exactly...
I have a Wacom Bamboo tablet and an '09 Intel-based MacBook.
    Thank you in advance!

I have had this same issue and found this program called NoteBook that allows you to type, and draw (write) notes on a variety of paper types, (lined, graphing, engineering, etc.) and it uses the .nb file type that allows you to save multiple "pages" inside one file in a sort-of "notebook" if you will. It works great, but has several minor disadvantages. I can't change the ink color, I can't change the tip thickness (other than the pressure sensitive option with my wacom graphics tablet), and it doesn't allow you to open pdfs or other documents to inscribe upon. All around though it has been wonderful. There are really no good note taking apps out there...

  • Looking for a lens

Looking for a lens that will take sharp flower, bug photography, but also sharp portrait pictures. Thank you!

Incidentally, a true "macro" lens (1:1 image scale meaning image on the sensor is the same size as the object being photographed in real life) provides the best performance.
There are other ways to do close-up photgraphy.
You can use "close up diopters" -- these are filters that thread onto the front of your lens (like a jeweler's magnifying loupe).  They're much less expensive, but not as versatile and you may notice the image quality around the edges of the frame aren't quite as good.
You can use "extension tubes".  These are hollow barrels (there is no glass in an extension tube) that are mounted between the camera and lens.  You attach the extension tube to the camera body (as if it were a lens) then you attach the lens to the extension tube.  They're not very expensive.  By moving the entire lens farther away from the sensor, the entire focus range of the lens is shifted closer (the lens can now focus on subjects much closer than it could previously manage focus -- but also can not focus all the way out to "infinity" when the extension tube is in use.
When doing very close photography the depth of field gets extremely narrow.  If you lock focus, but then your body moves forward or backward -- even by just a few millimeters -- then you'll throw off the focus on your intended subject.  A tripod is a very handy at preventing that accidental shift.
Since the depth of field is so very narrow, it may not be possible to capture some objects completely in focus from front to back.  Part of a flower may be sharp... but other areas quite out of focus.  To resolve this, you can take multiple images and manually shift the focus just a very tiny bit each time.  The set of images can be combined using "focus stacking" (Photoshop does this as part of the "photo merge" capability.)  There are stand-alone programs that do focus stacking as well.   You can also buy a device which mounts on the tripod called a "focus rail"... the camera is mounted on a short "track" ... perhaps 6" long.  The rail has a knob on it with index marks and allows you to carefully move the camera by precise distances for each exposure.

  • Looking for handy Alarm app!

I am looking for a very small, small, compact, simple application that sits in the menu bar and allows me to set a time at which it will remind me of something. (ex.: taking an eye-break, taking food out of the oven, etc..)
No, iCal doesn't cut it (at all) -- too big, etc.
High Priority(.app) doesn't cut it either.
I am seriously seeking a tiny application that literally just lets me set a timer-alarm with a small reminder-message that pops up. No note-taking-features, no calendar; just something that I won't even notice running until it reminds me to call at work!
Hopefully someone knows something like this and let's me know quick
    Thanks

  • Mac Newbie looking for short answers to multiple questions...

My computer experience started with the Commodore 64 in the 1980's and progressed to building my own Core Duo PC with 4 GIG RAM running 64 bit Vista Ultimate and several flavors of Linux. My only Mac experiences happened when I visited my elderly parents, who insisted on only using Mac's, generally ancient Mac's that they bought on eBay.
I was not interested at all in Macs and found the GUI very confusing to use. All that changed when my dad showed me the Mac Mini he bought. Instead of the hulking, slow, underpowered behemoths he usually used, this little machine was amazing. I had to have one, and yesterday bought a Mac Mini with superdrive and 512 MB of RAM, along with Bluetooth wireless keyboard and mouse. This was amazingly easy to set up, just starting with all of the PC stuff I have lying around.
Now, I need some one-line opinions from people who use Mac's, nothing complicated, just opinions. I don't need help configuring this machine, I just want to know what I can do with it. I find most people enjoy giving opinions!
--Is it worth it to upgrade the RAM to 2 GB? I wanted to do that at the store yesterday, but the salesman said that the procedure was too complicated in a Mac Mini to do myself, and I wanted to take the computer home right way.
--I use Photoshop Elements 5. Is it worth it to get Photoshop Elements 4 for Mac, or does my machine come with imaging editing software that does the same thing, just as well?
--I use Quicken 2007. I read a couple of reviews of Quicken for Mac from unhappy customers. Any comments?
--Can I use my existing external USB 2 or Firewire drives with my Mac Mini, even though they are partitioned as FAT32 and have many backup files from PC's on them? Do Mac Mini's write to FAT32 like Linux does, or do I have to reformat the drives?
--I use Acronis True Image to backup & image my hard drives so I can restore them if disaster occurs (as it seems to, rather often). How do you image a hard drive with a Mac, and is it worth doing?
--Is it worth it to use antivirus software on a Mac?
--Does anyone have any experience using open source software like Open Office or GIMP on a Mac?
--Are there any decent flight simulators that work on a Mac?
Please don't flame me or tell me to read the manual. I am looking for opinions, not instructions. I am also not interested in running Windows software on my Mac - I have had mixed results trying to do this under Linux, and I also have plenty of Windows machines to operate Windows software. Remember, the more people like me who are interested in switching over to Mac's, the better and cheaper the platform should become. Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Glad you found your way to the Mac in the present incarnation of MacOS. Earlier flavors of it were perhaps somewhat less elegant, though I have always had a liking for the relative simplicity and the integration of features which tend to make some work more easily accomplished than on the PCs I have also used.
--Is it worth it to upgrade the RAM to 2 GB? I wanted to do that at the store yesterday, but the salesman said that the procedure was too complicated in a Mac Mini to do myself, and I wanted to take the computer home right way.
Yes, the memory upgrade is very worthwhile. A stock mac mini runs perfectly well, but when taking into account the RAM used by the on board video, and the possibility of using Rosetta if you're using any non-native software, 512Mb is really not enough for smooth operation. Indeed, you'll tend to get pauses which can become annoying, particularly if you want to run multiple applications.
The salesman really should have pointed out that while the procedure to upgrade RAM isn't really all that difficult, the mini is not intended to be opened by the user at all because there are no user serviceable parts inside. However, RAM is readily available from third party suppliers and with a little on-line research, is a fairly simple job to undertake. Two things to watch for: 1) that the memory comes from a supplier who will swap it without question, because Macs are rather more fussy about RAM than PCs tend to be, and 2), when completing the memory upgrade, ensure you reconnect the tiny fan control cable - failing to do so will leave the fan running at full blast all the time. It's an easy omission, and even the experts forget it sometimes!
--I use Photoshop Elements 5. Is it worth it to get Photoshop Elements 4 for Mac, or does my machine come with imaging editing software that does the same thing, just as well?
Depends on what kind of editing and image adjustment you generally do. The mini comes with iLife, which includes iPhoto, which has all the usual array of adjustment tools for brightness, contrast, color balance etc, plus a useful one for tilting images to straighten them if taken at an angle, but it doesn't include the filters and effects of a true image editing application. Photoshop Elements on the other hand is feature rich and easy to use, though at a cost. Personally, I don't like iPhoto much and use Photoshop Elements, though there is also a truly excellent shareware application called GraphicConverter, which started life as a tool to convert images from one format to another (hence the name) but is now a very feature-rich image processor in it's own right. Worth a look and can be tried out for free. Have a look at http://www.lemkesoft.com/xd/public/content/index.cGlkPTE5Mw.html
--I use Quicken 2007. I read a couple of reviews of Quicken for Mac from unhappy customers. Any comments?
No experience of this personally, but I'd check those reviews and any others you can find to see what it is the writers liked or didn't like about using the software, and see if that helps you. There are always unhappy customers though, so reviews in magazines may be more objective.
--Can I use my existing external USB 2 or Firewire drives with my Mac Mini, even though they are partitioned as FAT32 and have many backup files from PC's on them? Do Mac Mini's write to FAT32 like Linux does, or do I have to reformat the drives?
You can use your FAT32 formatted drives with the Mac though you are limited to files of 4Gb maximum.
--I use Acronis True Image to backup & image my hard drives so I can restore them if disaster occurs (as it seems to, rather often). How do you image a hard drive with a Mac, and is it worth doing?
It IS worth doing, yes. I use SuperDuper! which is first rate and free for making complete duplicates of a drive, or $29 for the paid/registered version to allow incremental backups. Works like a charm. If you use a drive partitioned in the GUID scheme (as the mini's internal is) you can even then set that drive, and the cloned copy of your system to boot the mini.
--Is it worth it to use antivirus software on a Mac?
Personally I'd say yes. ClamXav is open source (thus free) and reliable, has a marginal hit on CPU load and helps ensure you don't inadvertently pass on infections (it can also spot types of malware such as phishing scames). As yet, however, there are no known viruses/worms/trojans that affect MacOS, so it isn't critical at this time. However at some point it is likely there will be - in my view it's better to be prepared than to be left to react at the time.
--Does anyone have any experience using open source software like Open Office or GIMP on a Mac?
Yes. Like all open source projects, there are some good and some bad, but by and large the open source community for MacOS based systems is active and effective. Both Open Office and Gimp work well for example.
--Are there any decent flight simulators that work on a Mac?
    X-Plane springs to mind.
There really are very few people you'll find in Apple Discussions who would flame you for asking such questions. Indeed, answering such things is one of the prime reasons we're here, and while there's always value in reading the manuals, it must also be said that in many ways getting useful information out of them means you have to know enough already to be able to work out what information you need from all the stuff available. Questions are easier to ask and pertinent information easier to give as a result!

  • Looking for a Flash Coder

Hello! I'm looking for a Flash Coder/Designer to Create Quantity of 5 Flash Animations which pull dynamic text from a XML File.
Here's the URL of the type of animation styles we like,
    http://tinyurl.com/38r8wo2
Our finished animation graphics should have a fun look with easy interchangeable sponsors sponsors like the ones in these examples.
    http://tinyurl.com/249gf5l
The 2 types of animations we require are, one that will display dynamic polling information, the other will be text scrolling horizontally and vertically in a smooth manor.
The selected designer will receive the .XML Files which the action script will pull the information from.
We would like the following animations:
    1) Every time a new Text is added to the external XML file, that text is "SMACKED" on the screen, tiny from the distance to big on the screen, it will streak down the screen until it disappears off the bottom of the screen, this will be in a random manor, the text will have rotation angles of 140degrees. The font can be changed easily, as well as the background graphic. It should also contain a holder for a logo in the lower right hand corner which will jiggle whenever a new TEXT is detected.
    2) Every time a new Text is added to the external XML file, it will jump up from the lower part of the screen and stop at the top of the screen, every time a new text comes in, it will stack below that, bumping the top one up. This will happen infinitely. There should be a holder for a logo in the lower right hand corner, this logo should Blink everytime a new text is detected.
    3) Every time a new Text is detected is should scroll from right to left. In between each new text, a logo should scroll with the text. This scroll should easily be able to switch from right to left, and with logo and no logo.
    4) If possible to create a 3D effect, the actual REAL 3D effect that people use to watch with those RED and BLUE glasses. This text would fly in from the far distance and appear big on the screen, it should use Depth of field so the text appear to be flying out of the screen.
    5) Voting Poll Animation, should match the examples given in the URL.
Thanks! Budget is about $200 total. If interested please email me [email protected]

Is apple tv the only item that can be connected to a tv for airplay to work?  Looking for something smaller for the office

How big do you believe an ATV is?  They are tiny compared to most devices.
The ATV is the only AirPlay receiver, short of an actual AV receiver with AirPlay support, but those are MUCH larger.

  • Looking for app: show # of files inside folder

Does anyone know of an app that will show the number of files contained inside a folder on the desktop? I'm looking for something along the lines of the new-mail indicator for the Mail dock icon.
    Thanks!

Click on the Desktop and open View Options (Command + J). Then check 'Show item info'.
All the folders on the desktop will then have "xx items" in tiny writing under them, images will have their dimensions, drives their capacities etc etc.

  • Intermittant "Unknown Status" for POA and MTA

    Hello,
I'm getting intermittent "Unknown Status" in my GroupWise monitor for both my MTA and POA for a certain location. When I check the console for these two agents, they look just fine...
The box running GroupWise monitor is on the same physical location as the MTA and POA that is having the issue.
All of my other MTA and POA's at our primary remote location are just fine.
I've already verified that the SNMP strings are correct - they are identical to the working MTAs and POAs...
If there isn't a way to repair this issue, could someone please come up with a way from preventing "Unknown Status" messages from making it to my inbox? I've already tweaked the "Minimum Threshold level for notiifcation" to critical, yet it continues to "SPAM" me with "Unknown Status" messages...
If there isn't a way to "tune it out" of monitor, then I guess I'll just go ahead and make a rule in my GroupWise client to "move to trash" any "unknown status" messages... At least that will allow me to see any notifications of real problems...
    Thanks! :)

  • After Mozy's Time Capsule fiasco, looking for cloud alternative

I've kind of had it with Mozy as an adjunct to Time Capsule (e.g. the fire or burglary scenario). I'm a very new customer, a paying customer. It affected my Time Capsule adversely and Mozy has been zero help (details below for potential Mozy customers who want the grisly details). I'm wondering what other options there are out there to back up to a cloud somewhere and am looking for recommendations from someone who had good recovery experiences with postal-mailed recovered files from a service that will work alongside Time Capsule or maybe even integrate with it in some way.
If I might digress for an example... Not too long ago I had a hardware failure with a hard drive (that wasn't networked with the Time Capsule), a unit the Apple Store said was a goner and one that resisted a variety of recovery programs, and this great discount repair place I found (Sassinsky) let me send them a portable hard drive along with my iMac's heart. A week later, back came all my files in separate drive partitions on that portable just as my original hard drive had been partitioned, all the data in the right places. I love those guys at Sassinsky. This is what I want from the cloud, too.
As for Mozy, I've read some user posts of horror stories in how their recovered files came back, scrambled over multiple disks. But in fairness to Mozy, some of those posts are pretty old. So to refocus on my question, are there services out there that will coexist with Time Capsule and that will send you your hundreds of gigabytes of backed up data on a hard drive in a perfect match to your folder structure as it was on your original disk?
And the postscript for those curious about one Mozy experience, a bit off-topic for this forum, though...
First, let me say I am heartened to see some Mozy folks (Dave DeLong and Mark Suman) knowledgeable about the Time Capsule conflict and posting here, engaged and really trying to help users. Kudos, Mozy. But I'm disappointed with Mozy Support when I went through channels asking about my problems with Mozy corrupting my Time Capsule. As others have reported, I get the "Time Machine Error. The backup disk image could not be mounted." I had just started with two paid accounts with Mozy. Wow, what an introduction to a new service. I included links to other users' dialogues about the problem, including some discussions.apple.com chatter.
From Tech Support on Aug. 16 I got a swell response, "We’re sorry about the trouble some of you ran into with this latest version. We’re working quickly to get this issue resolved and expect to release the fix soon." Helpfully adding, "If you uninstall Mozy and reboot, you should be able to use Time Capsule as before. " Of course, this missed the point that in my request for assistance I started off by noting that I had already uninstalled Mozy. Did you notice I said this email came Aug. 16?
I referred my new Tech Support friend Mubarak to the Aug. 13 Mozy blog entry about new v.1.4.3 that provided a link to the "fix" that already had been released supposedly resolving the Mozy conflict with Time Capsule. You can't expect the tech support folks to keep up on their releases. To his credit, I did get a friendly acknowledgement to my rude missive, a promise two days ago to elevate my inquiry, with no further Mozy response. I understand that I'm asking them about an Apple equipment problem, but darn it, their software caused it. I'm just a little tiny user, two paid accounts, but I think maybe I was wise to go month-to-month and not fall for those discounts with the annual subscription.

For those who may belated stumble into this thread and have similar questions about cloud alternatives, I found an interesting comparison article at: http://theappleblog.com/2009/07/16/mozy-vs-carbonite-mac-backup-smackdown/
And with a little more research, I did find that a service mentioned in some posts related to the above review, Blackblaze, does prominently advertise a $189 restore option to a USB drive, which was one of my dreams... see:
    https://www.backblaze.com/internet-backup.html
Like Mozy, it has exceptions... "backs up everything on your computer except your operating system, applications, temporary files, or those over 4GB." Hmmm... I wonder if a few of my Final Cut Pro projects exceed 4GB? Like Mozy, it will will let you include physically attached external hard drive. Yay.
Because it requires Intel Macs, I'm thinking that I may keep Mozy for one of my laptops, but switch my main iMac network server to Blackblaze. I've been having problems with Mozy on the laptop, though -- it just stops backing up and doesn't alert me (log shows repeated "churn is not running" and "Could not load version info from server: Error NSUnknownErrorDomain 7." Not very user friendly info. I'll still hold out hope that Apple may do something with Time Machine that would make it easy for vendors to provide a Time Machine compatible service that would integrate seamlessly and adjust fees for all the applications and other memory hog files it would otherwise exclude. I really don't want to have to learn what Mozy churn is, not that my Time Capsule gives me much user-friendly log detail.

  • Advice - Looking for FW 800 pc express card

    Hi all,
Am looking for advice re the PC express FW800 cards out there, want to get one to use with my MBP core 2 duo 2.33 17".
I have used a Belkin one (someone else's), which seemed mostly fine, didn't require a driver or anything like that. However, I did find that I couldn't use it 'hot-swappable'.. or at least, it was fine to insert the card and start using it when the MBP was already on. But when I tried to remove it (after switching it off from its control panel), I got a kernel panic a while later.
So I did some research and have found that there's also a Lacie one on the market, which has two 800 ports and one 400. It says on the Lacie site that it's hot-swappable, so if they claim this I would presume you should be able to insert and also remove the card without the machine freezing up. I couldn't find however if it needs a driver or not, I'd prefer something without one frankly, as it seems like that might mean less could go wrong..
Anyway, any advice or experiences (especially bad experiences!) are most welcome.
    Cheers!
btw thanks to everyone that gave me advice on swapping out my MBP's internal drive recently.. I ended up doing it myself (following the instructional vid on youtube) and it went very smoothly. The new drive (a Seagate 500GB 7200rpm drive, the one without the dodgy conflicting anti shock thingy) seems to be working perfectly.. No noisier, the drive itself is physically a little lighter than the old one I had, and I've been monitoring the temperature and it seems fine. Perhaps there is a tiny bit more of a drain on the battery, but not much, in any case I already had a 7200rpm drive albeit a smaller one, so it shouldn't change it all that much. Anyway, thanks for the tips on installing it myself, it was a good thing to do.

I have a SIIG two-port ExpressCard that works well, and can be hot-swapped with no problems. The SIIG cards can use an AC adapter to boost the bus power to the port (if you have devices that need a substantial amount of power from the bus).

  • Movie rentals that I downloaded onto iMac with Lion to do not show up on ATV 2 in menu for computers.  Purchased movies show up just fine.  What to do or look for?

I have an imac that is running lion and an Apple TV generation 2.  I have rented a movie from itunes and it shows up on my imac in Itunes under a rental icon, and will play fine on my computer.  However, it does not show up as choice to play on my apple tv.  I have homesharing enabled and everything else works fine including purchased movies that are on my imac, but no where does it show rental movies.
What do I look for?  What do I do to play the rental movie on my apple tv 2?

    Answer to my own question:
Wait until the downloaded rental has completed its download to the imac.  This took a long time for me, since it was part of several things that I was downloading at the same time.
Finally, it showed up on my apple tv.   Interestingly, I was able to watch much of the movie on my iMac before the movie finished its download and was available to the ATV 2.

  • Looking for a Darknet/Secure BBS app

I have been a fan of Haxial KDX for the longest time, but due to the bugs, etc., I would like to move on.  I'm looking for a secure darknet/bbs styled program that supports chat, filesharing, and of basic user management (who can login, who can't, etc..).  I have been asking this question all over the web, and haven't gotten (or found) a single response.  Waste has never worked right for me, by the way.  I would definitely prefer it to be open source, which is why I thought it best to post here.  Please help out, or at least direct me somewhere where I should ask... Hinckley) claimed on the Haxial website that he is willing to sell the project.  I wouldn't mine purchasing and restarting the KDX Project, but I've been unable to get in contact with him.  So...if you are him, or know him, or own the rights to Haxial KDX and all related projects...$$$$$

I've recently become a big fan of OneSwarm - http://oneswarm.cs.washington.edu - I like that it supports remote access.
But I'm definitely interested to see what this thread brings up!
