Looking for a well-mannered external FW drive

I've ordered Leopard and have decided to add a new external 500MB FW drive to take advantage Time Machine. Is there a reasonably quiet one that will play nicely with both Time Machine and my G4 Mini? Do I need to order a powered hub since I boot from a partition on my Maxtor or can I daisy-chain without getting an ugly performance hit?

I tend to buy enclosures and bare drives but at work we are currently selling Western Digital My Book drives and Buffalo drives. I grabbed a 500GB My Drive for my wife and we've been happy with it. Whatever you drive, be sure to format it, nearly all external drives come formatted for Windows today.
Generally, daisy chaining two to three drives is no problem, beyond that it is a crap shoot in my experience. That's when I look at a hub.

  • Looking for help with an external hard drive....read on please...

I have all of my music on an external hard drive, and that's where my iTunes "points" to for all the songs in my library. Here is my question (and please be as literal as possible, even if you think it's obvious):
When I purchase new songs from iTunes Store, they don't go directly to the harddrive (at least I don't think so). So, what steps do I need to take to get any new songs from my iTunes library onto my external harddrive? Thanks in advance. I know it should be obvious, but I've been burned by countless "obvious" functions/actions in iTunes one too many times

RAIDing the two will destroy the data on the drive. I'm sure that's explained in the manual.

  • Looking for LabView 6i GPIB-USB-A driver for Agilent E7401A

I am looking for LabView 6i GPIB-USA-A driver for Agilent E7401A EMC ANALYZER.

    Hi,
There is a driver for this device available for downloading from the National Instruments Instrument Driver Network. Here is a link to the download page:
    Multi-Environment Certified IVI Instrument Driver
Unfortunately, however, this driver is only available for 7.0 and 7.1. Unless someone else on this message board has created one for 6i, you will need to create your own.
The other option is to upgrade to LabVIEW 7.1, which I highly recommend. There are many improvements over LabVIEW 6, including Express VIs, Event Structures, and many others. You can see the new funtionality of LabVIEW 7.1 with a free online demo version at this link
    Try LabVIEW 7.1 FREE Online
If you are interested in upgrading, you can call your National Instruments Technical Sales Representative at (888) 280-7645. Have a great day, and good luck with your driver search.

What are you using to search? You should be able to search any drive in from the Finder. If you're having trouble, try "EasyFind" from the App Store (free). You can search any volumes with it.

  • Looking for suggestions to sync external drives over internet

I have a iMac connected to an external hard drive at my house. I would like to sync this external drive to a another external drive connected to a Mac Mini at my parents house. I would like this sync to happen automatically at night and also be free.
    Anyone have any suggestions??

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I checked out the rsync stuff but I think its a little over my head. If I had the time or patience I could create a customized solution like that but it seems more trouble than its worth. I am looking more for an application that does the work for you like Crash Plan.
I tested out CrashPlan last night. I installed it on both machines and it was able to backup the files I need very quickly. It supports the ability to set times for the backup which is a big bonus.
The only problem I run into is that it does not make a 1:1 copy of the data. It backs it up to the destination drive in some weird file format that you can not just access the data. If I experienced a failure I would have to use their restore utility to recover the files.
What I would like is that if the drive at my house fails I can run over to my parents, grab that drive, plug it in and be working exactly as before. Crash Plan is so close to being what I want but I just do not want to have to take the time, and trust that their utility will restore the data when I need.

  • Open thread for new purchase of external hard drive

I have 4x 500 GB drives and 2x 250GB drives that I want to consolidate to one drive. I have trusted LaCie and recently (in the past 2 years) have been happy with the G-Drives as well.
To my suprise (and shock really) the Mac geniuses I spoke to at the Calgary Apple Store said their techs use the WD 500GB Passport drives all the time. Super durable etc etc. but I was in need of 2 TB. I was torn between the G-Drive and the WD My Book Studio. The difference in cost was about $70. Historically, I've had the "don't trust western digital for Macs" running through my head ever since I heard it.
However, I was convinced to go with the Western Digital My Book Studio 2TB (it's not a "new" company), but I've found that every time I boot up the drive, it runs the proprietary software which I don't intend to use. So far, I'm not finding any luck on how to get around this as I'm told it's "built into the firmware". Also, after my iMac goes to sleep, the drive disappears and I have to shut it off and turn it back on to bring it back.
What would you recommend for an external hard drive for long term storage (not to be used for time machine or iPhoto or iTunes)?
Would you recommend I take the WD drive back and get my head checked?

I'd return it for something else or a refund, but that's just me.
I too was shocked upon a recent visit to an Apple Store when I saw WD external drives for sale. One salesperson told me she was shocked that they were carrying them but that other staff member had told her that the WDs were now performing well for Mac users. I don't know what to make of it.
I find the external drive market to be confusing. I'll just say that I've been happy with an Iomega 250 GB triple interface drive that I bought 4 or 5 years ago and am happy with a 1 TB OWC Mercury Elite triple interface drive that I bought a couple of months ago.
Both these drives came WITHOUT any of the proprietary software so I didn't have to face the hassle of removing any of it.

  • Need advice on what to look for when buying an external HD

    Hello iBook enthusiasts,
I want to buy an external HD for backing up my important documents, and for having a way of booting up just in case the iBook should fail. I have searched some of the old posts, but I am still a bit confused.
So far, it seems that the most important criterion is that the drive have FireWire in order to be bootable.
I don't want to spend a ton of money. Somehow, I get these emails from Buy.com, advertising their specials. For example, they had a 250G one for $100 (although that particular deal is now expired). This seems like a good deal to me. Is that right? Should I try to buy the largest or smallest one that's in my price range? If iBook does die, I would like to still be able to use the HD with whatever replacement I get.
Also, is there any particular brand that I should either look for or avoid? How do I know these things?
Anyway, sorry these questions are so vague. Thanks in advance for any advice.
    Anna
    Ibook G3 500 MHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   14 GB HD, 640 MB RAM

    Anna:
Yes, rule no. 1, Firewire or FW/USB
    2. Largest HDD you can afford (having more space than you need it not a problem; needing more space than you have, is.)
    3. 7200 rpms. (Most of them are, but not all)
Here is a list of some of the best buys already sorted for 200-300 GB.
Different folks like different manufacturers. I have had my LaCie for 2 years. No problems. I like it for it's compact size and elegance.
Here are some good hints from Dr. Smoke on Backup and Recovery. Instead of Retropect, which I could never quite figure out, I use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper.
Post back with further questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • Just put my i-tunes library on a 2nd hard drive, how do I easily change the location where the program looks for current songs from the C:/ drive to the new drive without going thru each song individually in the "get info" tab

I just installed a new hard drive and transfered my i-tunes library to the new drive.  How can I make a bulk change of the location the program looks for the current songs.  I know you can do it song by song from the "get info" tab but I need to do it for all 4500 songs.  I have already changed the location that new files are stored to the new hard drive.

The pop-up lets you connect to the library file, iTunes Library.itl, on the external drive. This will, in turn, automatically update the preference for the iTunes Media folder to be the iTunes Media or iTunes Music folder inside the iTunes folder on the external drive and it will update the locations of all the content inside the media folder so that it uses the version on the external drive.
This works seamlessly if all iTunes content was inside the iTunes Media (or iTunes Music) folder (which was itself inside the iTunes library folder) before you moved/copied the iTunes folder. For content outside the iTunes Media folder iTunes should remain connected to the original location. These files should be consolidated (before or after the move/copy) and in addition, if available the library should be upgraded to the newer layout which places iPod Games and Mobile Applications inside the media folder instead of the library folder. (File > Library > Organize Library...)
For split libraries there are methods to rejoin them before moving (preferred) or repairing after the fact (e.g. my script) which I can go into if needed.

  • What to look for when purchasing iPhone external battery?

Next month I’ll be taking a 5 day trip to NYC and I’ll be using my built-in iPhone 4 Google Maps GPS a lot, so I’m in the market to buy an external battery. So with that said, what should I look for when purchasing one? I’ve noticed a lot of these advertise the mAh (milliampere-hour), and then some will also advertise the amperes themselves (i.e. 5200 mAh (2 amps)). What’s the difference when they advertise both?

DVI support is a must and most LCDs in the size that you are looking for are going to have it.
Your MB can drive a display with a resolution of up to 1920 x 1200 which just happens to be the resolution of the 23" Apple Cinema HD Display. I didn't want to pay Apple prices for a display, so I went looking at Dell. I picked up a 20" 2007WFP display from them for about $360 shipped and it works like a charm with the Apple Mini-DVI to DVI adapter.
I prefer displays that use a S-IPS panel over the more common and cheaper TN panels. S-IPS is much better for color reproduction and that is why Apple uses them in their Cinema Displays. Dell uses the same panel is some of their 20" models - I got one - but some buyers are very upset that they got a TN panel instead of the S-IPS panel. I was lucky I guess.

  • PSE 6 wants to look for reconnections on the wrong hard drive

I recently installed a new 500 GB hard drive.  I want that to be my new C [main/boot] drive and managed to accomplish this with some changes to the boot.ini file.  My original C is now named J and is a 120 GB hard drive that I wish to use to backup pictures. I have an identical set of digital pix on both the new C and J.
The problem I'm having with PSE 6 is that following a digital picture download to my new C, the thumbnails show up in PSE 6, but when I attempt to print one, the recently downloaded files are noted as disconnected.  When I try to reconnect, I find that the photos were indeed downloaded to my new C drive, but PSE 6 lists them as connected to the J [old C].  When I try to navigate the reconnect process to the proper hard drive, the button grays out and nothing happens.  I went to Edit>Preferences>Files>Folders for saved files and navigated to the new C and confirmed that is was set as the location for the stored files.  It seems that no matter what I do, PSE 6 wants to look for everything on the old C, now called J.
Any thoughts on why this is happening and how I can fix it?
Thanks for any and all help.

    John,
At long last, here is the output.log that I typed in.  For some reason, the site will not let me paste anything in it.  And, as I indicated earlier, any emails that I've sent by hitting REPLY keep bouncing back.
    Again, thanks for any help.

  • Can "Refit" Be Used for USB Boot From External Optical Drive?

Since the new Mac Mini 2011 has no optical drive, how would one make a generic USB 2.0 optical drive act as a boot device? I have heard that a utility called "Refit" can alter the boot loading order and device choices in Macs. I suppose it is also possible that the new Mini may already be set up to boot first from USB. I would appreciate any comments. It would be nice to have some kind of optical drive boot option for Windows installation and other possible utilities that need to boot before the OS in order to work. Maybe I will have to take my external optical drive to an Apple store to find out. Hope not. I also suspect that a USB keyboard will be mandatory for "Refit" and the boot drive to be used before Mac OS X is loaded.

    No utility should be needed.
You can hold the Option key down during the boot process to select which drive you wish to use as a boot device.
Also pressing and holding C boots to the optical drive.
There is reportedly a pretty broad number of USB optical drives that people have been able to use as a boot device, as inexpensively as $30. I don't know that there is a specific list though. I would research whichever model you wish to buy with a quick google search or searching that model here in the forum.
Or maybe somebody will have a recommendation which one they have.

  • Best software for backing up an external hard drive to another

I used to use the echo feature within SyncToy on a PC to create a backup of the external hard drive i keep all my work files on but want to find software that will do this Mac based.
Effectively SyncToy scanned the primary drive for additions and deletes and replicated these on the backup hard drive... it was called ECHO within SyncToy
Is there software for the mac that can do this?

  • Looking for a good FHD external monitor

What are people using for external monitors? I'm looking for a FHD (1920x1080) monitor to connect to my W520 system. I'm interested in something between 22 and 24". Suggestions.
    Thanks

I use a pair of Dell U2211H monitors, and would suggest anything in the Dell's UltraSharp range. My monitors are 21.5" IPS and cover close to 100% of sRGB. This monitor has display port, VGA, and DVI connections, and a built in 4 port USB 2.0 hub. The current version is the U2212HM is very similar and runs $219. It comes with a 3 year limited warranty and a 0 bright pixel warranty (Premium Panel Guarantee). I choose this panel due to warranty, price, and pixel density (I love dense panels).
If you choose to go larger, the 24" U2410 ($499) has a better gamut, and gives you a 16x10 resolution of 1920 x 1200.
If you want to stay with Lenovo, they offer the 23" IPS LT2323z ($399.99) it comes with 2 microphones and a full HD webcam. It also has 3 USB 3.0 ports and 2 USB 2.0 ports. Gamut is not specified.

I am looking for either a source or the part number for the bracket that holds the main hard drive in a T540 or W540.  It may be the same as a T440, but I don't have one to look at.  The parts list does not show it separate from the drive.  Any info would be appreciated

    Hi Richk,
I pulled the unit out from my W540 and funny enough, there are no markings of any kind on this plastic rail / bracket.
