Looking for additional storage to attach to xserve

I have a client that has filled up the space on their xserve. They would like to add a firewire 800 drive for additional storage. They cannot afford the Promise products. Does anyone have a recomendation? I would prefer if the additional storage was at least Raid 1. We have looked at everything from WD Raid 1 externals to Drobo. Reliablity is more imprtant than performance for now.

You will not get the performance from the Sonnet cards -especially in a RAID configuration- that you would expect. Those cards employ 'port multipliers' and any RAID configuration will be through software. You would better serve your client with an Areca product such as one of these:
http://www.areca.com.tw/products/externalx.htm
as these employ a dedicated hardware I/O processor and do support EFI booting on Intel XServes. They are not cheap, around $600US from Newegg for the 1120ML, but they are not as expensive as a VTrak, either. Also, when buying disks for the storage array, avoid bulk OEM desktop class drives and invest in server class products such as the Western Digital RE3 or RE4 series drives.

With the Camera Connection Kit you can input data from an external USB device to the iPad, but you cannot write from the iPad to the connected drive.

I purchased a  MBP 13.3/2.5/8GB/128GB FLASH from Apple store in Manhattan Beach,CA some months ago. It has only 128 GB storage.
I soon realized that I did a big mistake not upgrading the storage when purchasing. I thought I could upgrade later which is not possible I understand.
    My Q:
What is the best and most practical/userer friendly option for additional storage say up to 1 TB ?

    Hey leiv karsten,
As your macbook is retina, you can't upgrade it like previous generation macbook pro.You can purchase a portable 1TB external harddrive.

  • TS4009 How do I get a full uk refund for additional storage bought but realized not needed?

How do I get a full uk refund for additional storage bought but realized not needed?
All I wanted to do was upgrade my ipad 2 to ios 6 but in my settings it was greyed out and it told me I did not have enough storage to upgrade so I bought additional icloud storage and realised that this made no difference whatsoever
Now I was a refund but typical apple, one click to buy but a million and a phone call to get back
I just want this iPad upgraded and my refund for storage that aint storage!?? and someone to explain to me in LAYMAN's terms what the difference is between iPad storage and iCloud and what is the point if you cannot upgrade even though you bought more storage!?
    Thank you

Use instructions to downgrade your storage.
difference in laymans terms is simple. You ipad has local storage. Icloud is storage on apple server, that people by to create backup. Local storage for ipad can not be expanded. New ipad with bigger storage can be purchased and Apple makes them is up to 128 gigs size.

  • HT4623 I couldn't download the new software to my ipad or iphone because not enough storage so I paid the $20 for additional storage.  The purchase went thru and both phone and ipad are showing 15 GB of storage but I am still getting the message

I couldn't download the new software onto my iPad or iphone because I didn't have enough storage.  I paid the $20 for additional storage.  Both devices are showing 15 GB of storage but both are still saying that I don't have enough storage available for the new download (3.3 GB req'd)  What else can I do?

Delete some apps or stuff off your devices. The 'not enough storage' doesn't refer to iCloud space but space on your device.
If you have a bunch of downloaded music from iTunes, delete it to make room, you can always redownload it after the update. If you have movies, I'd go for them first since video takes up tons more room than audio (delete less movies is the same space as lots of music)
If you have apps you don't use, you can delete those, as long as you don't mind losing any data associated with them.

  • Best Format for Additional Storage

I've read a few threads on this issue, but none seem to provide the answers I need, so I'm starting a new one.
I'm trying to make the best decision for additional storage for editing with FCP 4.5. I have a new project for a new customer that will require a significant amount of video storage while I am still doing my current projects (so I can't make room/stop what I'm doing, I'll be doing projects concurrently). This storage solution will just be a capture scratch disc.
You can see below what I've got, system-wise. My current storage consists of 2 internal drives and 3 external fw800 drives. This setup has worked effectively for a number of years, but I'm now a little nervous (after reading some other posts on this subject) about adding another fw800 drive to the mix (such as the 1.2 TB Lacie Bigger disk).
    Here are my questions:
    1) Is the most reasonable (balancing price and performance) thing to do is add another fw800 drive? I have a PCI card with open fw800 ports.
    2) Are any ethernet solutions viable for working in FCP? If so, which ones? My current router is an old one but upgrading that to a gigabit option is reasonable if this will allow enough throughput for editing video from this storage solution.
    3) Is a SATA card, such as the Sonnet Tempo-X eSATA (http://www.sonnettech.com/product/tempo-x_esata8.html), a viable option?
I'm gathering data at this point so any input is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Yea. The site is www.granitedigital.com if you didn't get that. I would probably go with them for heavy-lifting video jobs or go with Glyph (www.glyph.com) if you've got the means. They've got great flexible rackmount stuff in addition to enclosures. (They are, in the opinion of many, simply the best made external drives on the planet, used in almost every audio recording studio. You get what you pay for.) I would also check out G-technology. They all make great stuff; it's a matter of what fits your budget and needs based on what each company can offer you in terms of flexibility.
Those notes being said I have had good experience with the LaCie drives I have encountered. I have an external CD-RW drive which is several years old and is still cranking out my CD masters for me without fail. I have a great deal of friends who use the D2 drives as well... they are solidly built (all metal) and use an Oxford chipset (I believe the more dated 922 but it's a decent chip) and like someone else said probably whatever batch of drives they can get cheapest. Inevitably, like any other drive, there are bound to be duds and drives that will fail prematurely. All things considered, in my experience they are workhorses and great "all-around" drives for doing whatever needs to be done in your everyday life.
    hope this helps,
    bret

  • Im completely new to Mac. Im swapping my windows laptop for macbook pro and looking for network storage solution which the Time Capsule seems to do. Is it possible to use this as NAS for my desktop Windows PC - windows 7

Im completely new to Mac. Im swapping my windows laptop for macbook pro and looking for network storage solution which the Time Capsule seems to do. Is it possible to use this as NAS for my desktop Windows PC - windows 7

Broadly speaking I want some sort of network storage( wireless or through my existing wifi router) that I can access files for both my windows PC and Macbook and also to access files to my iPad/ iPhone. Some sort of backup and sychronisation so that I can access certain files remotely.
Buy a real NAS.. synology or QNAP are the standard... although companies like Netgear and Western Digital and Seagate make them as well.
There is no problem sharing between Mac and PC now.. you do not even need a NAS to do that.. you simply share the hard disk directly. Mac talk SMB.. everything talks SMB nowadays.. so it is easy.
ipad and iphone are not designed to use NAS.. they are designed to backup only to the cloud or itunes.. but you can load an app like file browser if you want.
    http://www.stratospherix.com/products/filebrowser/
Remote access to the Apple TC is somewhere between difficult, to impossible from a PC.. Apple use BTMM and iCloud but the service is not offered to PC.
A real NAS will offer HTTPS or SFTP or several other methods.. that both Mac and PC can use.
You simply plug it into the current wireless router.. it is a network device and assessable over the network. It is not necessary to buy another router.. in fact that is a waste.

  • If I paid for additional storage how can i tell when it expires?

I thought I paid for additional storage when icloud started, why is it telling me it is about to expire?

Click on the apple logo upper left hand corner and select about this mac,in the box that comes up click on more info which will launch the system profiler. Under the hardware tab click on Serial-ATA the name and model # of your HD will be listed, copy and paste into a google search and you should find plenty of info about the HD. Cheers.

  • HT201318 How I cancel a purchase  i did for additional storage in iCloud?

I would like to cancel a purchase made for additional storage in iCloud.  How I do it ?????

You can cancel an iCloud storage upgrade but only within 15 days of buying:
Apple seem to have made this as difficult as possible. You may be able to do this using http://expresslane.apple.com - Click on 'More products and services', then 'iCloud', 'Account and setup' then 'This topic is not listed'. Explain the situation in the box provided and wait for a response - include a phone number. However you may find you cannot proceed without entering a hardware serial number which is still eligible for AppleCare.
In that event you will need to phone them directly, using the Apple Online Store number given at the bottom of this page. The first person you speak to may tell you to do it from the iCloud website but this is not possible. Politely insist on escalating the issue to a more senior person and eventually you should be able to get through to someone who can deal with this (you may have to wait for them to call you back) - you will be asked security questions and for part of your credit card number to identify yourself.
If it is more than 15 days since you purchased the storage you cannot cancel it for a refund; you can downgrade your plan as from your next renewal date. Please see

  • Can I use a Time Capsule for ADDITIONAL storage for a Mac Air which has run limited storage space

    Hi
I am looking at purchasing the current MacBook Air but am aware of its limited storage space in terms of files, photos etc.
Was wondering if I could use a time Capsule for both back-up and as an additional storage device.  Ie: would I be able to store photos and files on the Time Capsule that I do not wish to store on a MacBook Air and be able to retrieve them as and when - or would these be deleted after a period of time?  Is there any way of protecting certain files on the Time capsule to prevent them from being deleted?
    Many thanks in advance

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can but it's not recommended, because you can damage the Time Machine structure.

Only files backed up with Time Machine are deleted from your Time Capsule when there's no enough storage. If you store other files, they are not deleted. However, for what you want to do, I recommend you to buy a big external drive and make two partitions, one for Time Machine and another one to store files, or get two external drives

  • Looking for longlife storage solution - is tape still an option?

    hi there,
im looking for a long life and very safe way for backing up 6 TB of data.
is the magnetic tape option reliable? or what would u suggest to go for?
    thx
    manuel

Tape is still very much a viable option, and is used regularly to backup petabytes of data on a daily basis.
At that capacity there are basically three different formats to consider, AIT (developed by Sony), LTO (from IBM/HP), and SDLT (from Quantum).
Of the three, LTO offers the highest speed and tape capacity with an LTO3 tape holding 400GB native (800GB at 2:1 compression) and a speed of 80MB/sec.
Behind that comes SDLT-II at 300GB per tape and 36MB/sec (the newer, bleeding-edge SDLT-III drives run 800GB per tape at 60MB/sec).
Trailing the list comes AIT at 200GB per tape and 24MB/sec.
Clearly, to manage terabytes of storage you need more than one tape, which is where autoloaders and libraries come into play - a chassis that contains multiple tapes and some robotic mechanism that transports the tapes from their storage bin to the tape drive mechanism itself. Larger units support multiple drive units in the box and potentially hundreds or thousands of tapes.
As for interface, SCSI is the predominant interface for tape backup, although Fiber Channel is sometimes an option.
There are FireWire options, too, but this is unlikely to be viable for your volume of data.
As for vendors, consider Quantum, Overland, Exabyte and ADIC.
Of the vendors mentioned, ADIC are probably the best at the high-end with Overland my preferred mid-level systems, and Exabyte at the lower end.
You should look at your data to decide a backup strategy before you go much further, though. Even though you have 6TB of data, you may find that once you have that backed up you only have a few hundred megabytes or gigabytes of data that changes frequently. Any decent backup software system will manage this for you, taking some of the pain out of knowing which tapes are needed when it comes to restore.
On that basis you may be able to leverage a lower-end tape library to manage the smaller amount of daily backup load rather than a 10TB monster capable of backing up your entire data set in an hour.
Also, when it comes to backup strategies, consider the value of a disk-to-disk-to-tape system (D2D2T). These systems backup data very quickly to disk-based storage and then backup the disk-backup to tape. This reduces the time it takes to backup the critical data and also means that recent changes can also be restored from disk, without the overhead of loading the correct tape and reading the data from there.

  • Price for additional storage in Creative Cloud

    Greetings, and Happy Sunday
I'm considering putting my pix library into Creative Cloud for security. If I move or dupe the files to my C Cloud Files folder the process will be automated and invisible, which is very attractive.
But what will be the cost of additional storage space? The only info I have seen dates back to 2013 and says Adobe "will be selling additional storage" ??
    Is there a better option?
    TIA
    Ken

    Hi bford225,
I'm going to change the title of your post so it gets more attention. Hope that's OK.

  • I paid for additional storage and it didn't add the storage to my iCloud account

I purchased additional storage & I'm still getting messages, "Your iCloud Starage is full"  I purchased 10 more GB and it still shows on my device that I only have 5 GB & its full.  Is there any additional steps I'm suppose to take? It shows the $ was taken from my bank account.

You shouldn't need to do anything else.  You could try calling the Apple online store to confirm that their purchase records show that the purchase went through, and if so, ask them why the delay in seeing the storage increase.  If you're in the U.S. you can reach them at 1-800-MY-APPLE.

  • Looking for more storage? Any reason to NOT get a classic?

Looking to upgrade to an ipod with more storage... Any benefits of getting an itouch or nano vs classic ipod? I only use it for music

    More capacity than what?
If you currently have an MP3 player, that has 2Gb capacity, and you have 4GB of music, don't buy a 160GB Classic.
By all means though, consider the 16GB nano. Since you only want to use this iPod for music, why buy a Touch?
If you anticipate a massing a music collection above 16GB in the near future, then the nano won't be large enough. But you can always use Smart Playlists to limit what is on your iPod. With Smart Playlists automatically adding and removing music (according to rules you choose), it is possible for use a 16GB nano for a much larger music collection.

  • Looking for more storage space?

Do you need some more storage room and you find HP Storageworks a bit pricey, have a look here:
    http://www.lsi.com/storage_home/products_home/external_raid/7900_storage_system/index.html
It offers room for 60 3.5" disks or Stec SSD's, giving a storage capacity of 480 TB magnetic or 201 TB SSD in a single 4U unit.

An external drive is cheaper than a SAN or NAS. And we don't need to share the storage space between multiple machines.
USB 2.0 or Firewire seem fast enough. Maybe this approach will be conventional in the future?
