Looking for advice on best way to upgrade

I have a 4-year-old iMac with the following specs:
Processor 1.25 GHz Power PC G4
Memory 256 MB DDR SDRAM
I am running 10.4.11.
The only complaint that I have is that the computer has been running much slower in recent months. I plan on upgrading to Leopard soon. Does anyone have any recommendations on what I should do to improve performance? Please also tell me if your suggestions are something I can do myself or should put in the hands of professionals.

Hello,
There are several simple things you can do yourself:
1. Install an extra 1GB of RAM for a 1280MB total. 256MB is the bare minimum for Tiger (10.4.11) and really not enough for comfortable operation of much more than simple office tasks.
RAM prices (PC2700).
Instructions
2. Ensure that you have plenty of free hard disk space remaining. This is a very common cause of slow-down over a period of time. You should have at least 15% free so for an 80GB drive you shouldn't have more than 63GB on disk. You can check by right-clicking on Macintosh HD and choose Get Info.
3. Quit applications (especially Safari!) that aren't in use to free up system resources.
4. Other than Leopard, stop buying new software. On a four year old Mac it's bound to feel slow.
5. Whilst you are still using Tiger it's also worth using a system maintenance application like MacJanitor.

  • Looking for advice on best way to setup Fusion before just starting

    I plan to buy a Mac and install VMware Fusion to run my Windows apps at the same time.
    When I get my Mac, the first thing I'm going to do (recommended on this forum), it reinstall OSX and not include uneeded features like other languages, etc (to save space).
    Once I have OSX up and running, and I install Fusion, will it then convert an amount of GB to NTFS allocating that portion to Windows?
    Or, should I first partition the hard drive before/as installing OSX?
    I understand this stuff in Windows but am brand new to Mac so just want to make sure I go about it the right way from the start.
    I definitely DO NOT want to to the BootCamp thing as want my Mac environment up all the time (for email, primarily) and just launch Microsoft Visual Studio and other Windows apps as needed for work. I figure if I get 4GB RAM total, I can allocate 2GB to Windows when Fusion is running. Then when I close Fusion, I have all 4GB there for running Logic Pro and everything else on the Mac.
    Thanks,
    Ron

    Hi rcook349;
    Instead of doing an Erase & Install, what I do is use Monolingual to remove the extra languages.
    Another thing that will return more disk space that languages is to remove printer you are never going to own. I found that saved me almost twice as much space as the languages.
    I can say anything about running Windoze because I don't allow anything from M$ on my Macs.

    I have a Mac book pro on vesion 10.6.8 and want to access icloud as it works great on my iphone 4.  Not sure best way to upgrade as some of the review of Lion on the appstore are awful.  Any advice as I also have MIcrosoft word etc and don't want to have to purchase these again.

    That is the best list ever for Lion compatibility!
    You can also do this:
    Launch the programs you know and love on your Snow Leopard Mac.
    Utilities --> Activity Monitor
    Under the "Kind" tab it will identify the programs running PowerPC, Intel and Intel 64.
    No PowerPC apps will run under Lion.
    Don't worry about Apple's system stuff like Mail, iCal, Safari.
    Don't worry about the system processes, like fontd and launchd, those will be replaced if you go to Lion.
    Just look for the programs that you need.

    Unfortunately, Safari cannot be updated past 5.1.10 on a Mac running v10.6.8.
    So, the options are to upgrade to a newer OS X or use Firefox or  Chrome.
    Be aware, Apple no longer support Snow Leopard v10.6 >  www.ibtimes.com/apple-kills-snow-leopard-os-x-106-no-longer-receives-security-u pdates-1558393
    See if your Mac can run v10.9 Mavericks >  OS X Mavericks: System Requirements
    If so, you can download and install Mavericks for free from the App Store.

    As Bob says, any iMap service can do this. GMail can, iCLoud mail can too.
    Both of these can be used with Mail on any device.

  • Best way to upgrade?

    Hi all-
    I've drooled over the features of iphoto 09 for sometime now, and I've just purchased the iLife 09 disk. I'm ready to install, but first a couple of questions:
    1. What is the safest and best way to upgrade? Is it as simple as inserting the disk, following the prompts, opening iPhoto '09 once installed and pointing it at my '08 library? I keep my library on an external disk, attached to my 2TB TC.
    2. Is it better to do a clean install of iLife 09, rather than write over the old?
    3. Any words of wisdom to help preserve the intricacies of my '08 library (all the tags, events, etc) so I don't accidentally eliminate them in the transition?
    Many thanks-

    Larry - I found this post in searing for the exact thing.."best way to upgrade" from '08 to '09 iPhoto/iLife. I've owned it for months now and due to procrastination and not knowing how to properly back up my iPhoto library (shame on me...1 yr worth of photos backed up automatically on my TC - I hope at least - but not backed up any other way). I'd like to finally do the upgrade since I own 09 iLife but am too nervous to do anything since I don't know if my time capsule is really backing up all my photos saved on this laptop since I bought it 1/09. I've been meaning to just burn all my iPhoto pics onto DVDs for safe keeping and do it monthly so that any new photos just get burned onto a new disk, but is there another way to back up my iPhoto library onto my external drive (where I keep all my HD videos)? If I back it up periodically onto my external hard drive, does it just update those pictures I've added/changed or does it save a new copy of my iPhoto library EVERY time I backup? I would think that would take up so much memory. I don't know how to do it or where to start, other than to just make lots of DVD backups. Any step by step advice would be GREATLY appreciated!!

  • Best way to upgrade SSD to newer SSD

    I know this belong to operating system section but im a computer system admin and im looking for the best way to upgrade existing SSD with lion on it. I know several ways to do this but i'm looking forward to best way to do it. My existing ssd and computer is only couple of months old. I have kensigton 240gb ssd in my computer and im upgrading to intel 240gb ssd. Lion onwards, you can't run disc utility and do restore to clone, we need to boot to restore partition or lion boot disc for this. Is that the best way to do it? I know doing this we lose the hidden restore partition whih i dont care but is there anyway doing it to keep the hidden partition or to make it truly perfect clone without affecting any programs.
    One way to do is do clean install of 10.7.3 and use migration assitant the very first time computer boots and it will keep hidden partition also but i have always refrained from doing migration assistant since it doesnt copy few stuff from old hard drive. I have ableton and some other critical programs loaded on it curently.
    I don't like the new interface of CCC and i havent used superduper lately, i believe they use apples restore command under the hood?
    What would you geniuses would do if you want a perfect clone?

    Hi,
    You've made a wise choice. I'm, myself, using 3 Sandisk SSD's at home on three laptops. They took me more than 2 hrs to (a) Pull the old HDD's out, (b) Put the SSD's in and (c) Put EVERYTHING back. I cloned the HDD's using O&O Diskimage before open the cases of all 3 laptops. Please note: If you wish to use clone method, you need your SSD big enough for normal C: drive on your existing HDD.
    Hope this helps.

  • Passing cursor record values to procedures - looking for advice

    I frequently use cursors in my programs and need to pass the values from said cursor around in the program to other procedures/functions.  I am looking for advice on the best or recommended way of doing this.
    Currently the majority of my programs do something like this:
    CREATE OR REPLACE PACKAGE BODY some_pkg AS
         CURSOR some_cursor IS
              SELECT t.col1,
                               t.col2,
                              t.col3,
                   FROM some_table t;
    PROCEDURE sub_proc
         (p_cursor               IN      some_cursor%ROWTYPE)
    IS
    BEGIN
         dbms_output.put_line(p_cursor.col1);
    END sub_proc;
    PROCEDURE main_process
    IS
         l_cursor          some_cursor%ROWTYPE;
    BEGIN
         FOR l_cursor IN some_cursor LOOP
              sub_proc(l_cursor);
         END LOOP;
    END main_process;
    END some_pkg;
    Basically I create the cursor as global so I can use it's %ROWTYPE as a parameter datatype in my procedures.
    I understand there are other options such as using a defined record type, or ref cursors, but I'm not totally clear on how ref cursors would help me, I don't really understand them well.
    Can anyone provide some feedback on how I currently handle this situation vs. the alternatives?
    Thanks

    I am not sure what you need to do.
    You can base records on cursors or tables using the %ROWTYPE operator.
    Cursors can be defined in the package header and used elsewhere by using normal cursor functionality (untesed)
    create or replace package my_package as
      cursor my_cursor is
        select *
          from dual;
      my_procedure;
    end my_package;
    create or replace package body my_package as
      procedure my_procedure is
      my_record my_package.my_cursor%rowtype;
      begin
        for r in my_package.my_cursor loop
          my_record := r;
        end;
      end my_procedure;
    end my_package;
      This can allow you to define the cursor in one place and reference it elsewhere.
    Reference cursors are pointers to result sets.  They reference actual datasets and can be passed between routines if defined in package headers.  There is a little more overhead using reference cursors but they support dynamic sql if needed (it usually isn't). and you MUST carefully coordinate FETCH commands to receive the values the cursor is selecting (this is harder than it looks)(untested)
    create or replace package my_package as
      type my_refcur_type is sys_refcursor;
      my_procedure;
    end my_package;
    create or replace package body my_package as
      procedure my_procedure(p_refcur out my_package.my_refcur_type) is
      begin
        open p_refcur for 'select * from dual';
    end my_package;
    --elsewhere
    my_package.my_procedure(my_cursor);
    fetch my_cursor into v_dummy;
    Hope this helps

    My Macbook hasn't been working well and I'm worried about things getting worse when going to Yosemite.  My system has some hardware problems (CD drive doesn't work, needs a new battery), but I'm looking to upgrade the whole system now.  I'd like to up the RAM to 8GB, put in a new hard drive (solid state?), etc...

    1. Increase your RAM to the maximum 8 Gigs.
    2. Replace your 5400 rpm hard drive with either a SSD or, if price is an obstacle, a hybrid 7200 rpm drive.
    3. Buy a new battery, recommend the genuine Apple one.
    4. Replace the DVD drive, if you need it.

  • What is the best way to upgrade from 10.5 to 10.7

    I am trying to figure out the best way to upgrade my MacBook Pro from 10.5.8 to the new Lion 10.7. From what I have heard so far, I need to get a copy of snow leopard first so I have the APP Store then download Lion. Has anyone heard of a bundled package to accomplish this?

    Apple is currently only making Lion available for download.  You'll have to accquire a copy of Snow Leopard first and upgrade to it.  Once you are on Snow Leopard, update your Mac with all of the current updates, which will then give you the App Store.  From the App Store you'll be able to download and install Lion.  I strongly advise backing up your system first prior to the update.

  • Best way to upgrade an old EDD

    Hello All
    I have a DITA EDD that dates back to FM7 and is therefore based on DITA 1.1 (or maybe DITA 1.0!). It allows creation of composite document made up of concepts,references, tasks, and topics, and also contains lots of formatting information and so on.
    Now that I am using FrameMaker 11, I'm thinking about upgrading this EDD to accommodate the DITA 1.2 Technical Content structures. I've been doing some reading about DITA 1.2 DTDs and EDDs, and understand the modularity that is involved.
    So my question is: What is the best way to upgrade this EDD so that the new structures are included, without losing my formatting information? Do I need to copy/paste format rules, etc. into a new EDD, or can I somehow import the DITA 1.2 structures into my old EDD? (Or does my question betray some basic ignorance on my part?)
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Roger...
    I hate to say it .. but I don't think there's an "easy" way to do this. I think you'll have to individually copy/paste the context rules into the corresponding element definitions .. taking care to not break things. You'll notice that the general rules for some element definitions will have changed, which may affect the context rules.
    Yes the DITA 1.2 apps with FM11 (and FM10) are largely modularized as text insets in a fashion similar to the way the DTDs are broken up. There's also separate apps for each topic type, rather then relying on ditabase to provide one app for all topic types. Conceptually, this makes good sense, but from a practical standpoint, it's really complicated to maintain. It also requires a system with loads of RAM to properly resolve these insets .. even then, it may take lots of time to manage. The idea behind the modularization is that you can update context rules for certain elements that are shared between the various apps .. although it's very possible that you want things to render differently in each topic type, which would require you to add more logic to the context rules to determine which topic type is in use.
    Personally, for the DITA 1.2 apps that I'm developing, I'm going back to a single ditabase app for all topic types with no insets. It is much easier to manage and maintain. The drawback to this approach is that the context rules map differ for certain elements depending on the root topic type. This is specifically an issue with task and strictTask. For that I will need separate apps. Also, I'll need separate apps for the learning topic types. But I think that for the basic task, concept, reference, and topic .. they can happily live together in one app .. making maintenance much easier. For the separate apps, I'll just copy/paste the elements definitions rather than relying on insets.
    The catch with all of this is when it comes time for book publishing, you'll need a single app that includes support for *all* of the topic types. Since it's possible that all of them may exist in a single chapter (assuming you're building merged chapter FM files rather than the nested chapter files, the FM default). The "Book" app doesn't need to be valid DITA so it's OK if the general rules allow more elements than they do in the authoring apps, so this is completely doable .. it just means that you have to maintain multiple apps.
    I hope this is helpful .. it's not a simple task by any means. An alternative option is to just rely on the shipping apps for authoring, and focus on customizing the Book app for publishing.
    Cheers,

  • Best way to upgrade an application?

    Hi,
    This is a newbie question.
    We created, & tested a new application. Then exported it from the dev env. and imported into the production env. That all went smoothly and the app is working well.
    The application id in production is different than in dev.
    We have now made enhancements to the development copy and are ready to deploy those into the production env.
    We will need to upgrade shared components and the application. The table upgrades are being handled outside APEX.
    I can see where to create upgrade scripts, but I'm not sure what needs to go into them.
    I've also seen in the forum where it looks like you can import over an existing application. The caveat with that seems to be that the application ids have to be the same.
    Can someone direct me on the best way to upgrade our shared components and the application.
    Thanks Nan

    If you are using the Apache driven app server, I believ there would be a way to do that, if you are using the internal web server, I don't believe so...
    (This might be a good time to coordinate the app ID's in development & production to cut down on these issues..)
    Thank you,

  • Best way to upgrade antonomous APs

    Is anyone have a best way to upgrade a group of 1230 and 1231 antonomous APs.
    They all don't have enough space for new code, which mean old code have to delete. Most the time they are not same code. I wonder if there is any software that we can add these APs to a list and push it out.
    Thanks,

    I just type the command in Notepad and cut-n-paste it. Here's what I've done:
    conf t
    no boot sys
    end
    wr
    delete /f /r flash:
    arch tar /x tftp:/// flash:
    reload at

  • Best way to upgrade to new drive?

    What is the best way to upgrade the hard drive on a Macbook? I mean to ask, what is the best way to transfer the complete system onto a new hard drive?
    Thanks!
    Captain!

    # Buy the desired new 2.5" drive. If buying a 500GB unit, the Samsung SpinPoint fits inside, the Hitachi doesn't, the Fujitsu is too slow.
    # Buy an external Firewire case for the drive. Install the new drive in it (this is temporary).
    # Power up and plug in the new drive to the Mac. Make sure the system sees the new drive.
    # Using Disk Utility, reformat the drive to a single partition, using a GUID partition scheme and in HFS+ format. Most new drives come in FAT32 or NTFS format. Search in the forums how to get rid of the NTFS format.
    # Using SuperDuper, Carbon Copy Cloner or even plain old Disk Utility, clone your startup volume (internal drive) onto the external.
    # Reboot and start up from the external (press Option before startup sound). Verify that everything works.
    # Shut everything down, take new drive out of case, exchange with internal drive. Do it yourself or pay qualified technician to do so. Old style MacBooks are relatively easy, MacBook Pro's are more complex, Oct'08 portables are a piece of cake.
    # Start portable, verify everything works. If so, put old drive in external case and use as a backup device. Else put it back in so you'll have a working computer while you figure out what went wrong.
    # Enjoy...
    Note: Since the Nov'07 release of the Mac portables, they have the Apple Hardware Test available as a hidden partition in the HDD, meaning that you can test your Mac without requiring the original Install Disk #1. If you change the internal HDD, you will lose that functionality, since no one has figured out how to copy the thing over to the new drive. This means you will need your Install Disk #1 to test your hardware from that point on.
