Looking for an Answer About Upgrading

Hello Droid Friends,
I am looking to upgrade from a Samsung 510 still on the Alltel network, to the Incredible and I am still a bit worried I don't have all the answers I need. I have talked to 3 different associates and have had totally different answers. I am currently sharing a plan with someone and we both want the upgrade since our previous contract is up and has been up for quite a few months now. I spoke with a Verizon Associate on an in store visit and asked if there is any possible way we could keep our current Alltel promotion which was one of the last that Alltel was doing before Verizon bought them. Its the Friends and Family 10 (1000 Minutes and Texts shared between 2 lines). The Associate I spoke with said it was possible to keep that and upgrade to new devices the only addition is the $29.99 data package per phone. I want to know if there has been anyone who had the same package I currently have and has had a succesful upgrade to the Incredible without picking new minutes and texts separately. If anyone has any information they could share with me about this topic, it would be greatly appreciated.
Also I have noticed that Wal-Mart carries Verizon phones and since newer phones are often more expensive and considering how everything we buy has gone up in price, I wanted to get the best bargain I can. I have considered going to them to get an upgrade. Rather than spending about $300 for two phones I could spend about $75 and get the same thing. I have watched quite a few people walk in and walk out of Wal-Mart with new phones and it takes just about as long to do the switch. If anyone in the community has gone that route I'd really like to hear about it as well.
Thank You for you opinions and advice.

if you go anyplace other then verizon, they will ask you to pick a current vzw plan.  they dont have the same option that vzw has.
you will then have to change it back.  if its an alltell plan the chance of going back to it is no very good
yes you payless at places other then vzw for hardware, but they cant do things like verizon can
what i do since i have a verizon promoplan is to call cs and do my transactions through them.
yes im paying more for the hardware, but the $40 a month i save on service makes it worth it
i would attempt it this way.  if they say you cant keep the plan, hang up and try a diff csr

I have an iMAC at home and at work. Can I edit my iweb webpage from both computers? If so, how? I can't figure out how to save my web page to my idisk or anywhere else so I can access it from another computer. I do have a .mac account. Can I save it there and access it from there to edit it? Any help would be great. Thanks.

I'm trying to make a time sheet and include a grid, but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to print a full grid on my spreadsheet.  There are options for shaded grids but I want a defined grid, and I have spent the last 2 hours looking for the answer.  Any ideas?

    Hi Cynthia,
Are you planning to have this table do any of the calculation, or is is to be used as the electronic equivalent of a sheet of paper with a grid printed on it—a place to record the data.
    For your seven column table:
Are you using one or more rows at the top of the table to label the data below? If so, you might want this row (or these rows) to be set as Header Rows.
Are you using the leftmost column to label the rows? If so, you may want this column to be a Header column.
The default table supplied on the "Blank" templates contains one header row and one header column. If you need more (or fewer) Header rows or columns, select the table, then go Table (menu) > Header Rows > (choose the number you need). Repeat to set the number of Header Columns.
To make a seven column table from the table supplied by default, click on any cell in column H (The eighth column), and drag right to add more cells to the selection, until you get to the last column of the table. With these cells selected, Go Table > Delete Columns.
To make the remaining seven columns fit across a single page:
Go View > Show Print View to show the table as it would appear when printed to paper.
Select the table by clicking its icon in the Sheets List to the left (easy method), OR by carefully clicking on the outside boundary of the table itself (fiddley method).
With the table selected, you will see square white handles at each corner and at the middle of each side (including the top and bottom).
With the mouse, grab the handle in the middle of the right side of the table and drag right (or left) until the table just fits onto the width of the defined page.
With the table still selected, set the thickness and colour of the cell boundaries using the Gaphics Inspector (as described by Jerry), or using the Stroke, Thickness and Color Well controls in the Format bar above the working portion of the Window.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • Mac Newbie looking for short answers to multiple questions...

My computer experience started with the Commodore 64 in the 1980's and progressed to building my own Core Duo PC with 4 GIG RAM running 64 bit Vista Ultimate and several flavors of Linux. My only Mac experiences happened when I visited my elderly parents, who insisted on only using Mac's, generally ancient Mac's that they bought on eBay.
I was not interested at all in Macs and found the GUI very confusing to use. All that changed when my dad showed me the Mac Mini he bought. Instead of the hulking, slow, underpowered behemoths he usually used, this little machine was amazing. I had to have one, and yesterday bought a Mac Mini with superdrive and 512 MB of RAM, along with Bluetooth wireless keyboard and mouse. This was amazingly easy to set up, just starting with all of the PC stuff I have lying around.
Now, I need some one-line opinions from people who use Mac's, nothing complicated, just opinions. I don't need help configuring this machine, I just want to know what I can do with it. I find most people enjoy giving opinions!
--Is it worth it to upgrade the RAM to 2 GB? I wanted to do that at the store yesterday, but the salesman said that the procedure was too complicated in a Mac Mini to do myself, and I wanted to take the computer home right way.
--I use Photoshop Elements 5. Is it worth it to get Photoshop Elements 4 for Mac, or does my machine come with imaging editing software that does the same thing, just as well?
--I use Quicken 2007. I read a couple of reviews of Quicken for Mac from unhappy customers. Any comments?
--Can I use my existing external USB 2 or Firewire drives with my Mac Mini, even though they are partitioned as FAT32 and have many backup files from PC's on them? Do Mac Mini's write to FAT32 like Linux does, or do I have to reformat the drives?
--I use Acronis True Image to backup & image my hard drives so I can restore them if disaster occurs (as it seems to, rather often). How do you image a hard drive with a Mac, and is it worth doing?
--Is it worth it to use antivirus software on a Mac?
--Does anyone have any experience using open source software like Open Office or GIMP on a Mac?
--Are there any decent flight simulators that work on a Mac?
Please don't flame me or tell me to read the manual. I am looking for opinions, not instructions. I am also not interested in running Windows software on my Mac - I have had mixed results trying to do this under Linux, and I also have plenty of Windows machines to operate Windows software. Remember, the more people like me who are interested in switching over to Mac's, the better and cheaper the platform should become. Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Glad you found your way to the Mac in the present incarnation of MacOS. Earlier flavors of it were perhaps somewhat less elegant, though I have always had a liking for the relative simplicity and the integration of features which tend to make some work more easily accomplished than on the PCs I have also used.
--Is it worth it to upgrade the RAM to 2 GB? I wanted to do that at the store yesterday, but the salesman said that the procedure was too complicated in a Mac Mini to do myself, and I wanted to take the computer home right way.
Yes, the memory upgrade is very worthwhile. A stock mac mini runs perfectly well, but when taking into account the RAM used by the on board video, and the possibility of using Rosetta if you're using any non-native software, 512Mb is really not enough for smooth operation. Indeed, you'll tend to get pauses which can become annoying, particularly if you want to run multiple applications.
The salesman really should have pointed out that while the procedure to upgrade RAM isn't really all that difficult, the mini is not intended to be opened by the user at all because there are no user serviceable parts inside. However, RAM is readily available from third party suppliers and with a little on-line research, is a fairly simple job to undertake. Two things to watch for: 1) that the memory comes from a supplier who will swap it without question, because Macs are rather more fussy about RAM than PCs tend to be, and 2), when completing the memory upgrade, ensure you reconnect the tiny fan control cable - failing to do so will leave the fan running at full blast all the time. It's an easy omission, and even the experts forget it sometimes!
--I use Photoshop Elements 5. Is it worth it to get Photoshop Elements 4 for Mac, or does my machine come with imaging editing software that does the same thing, just as well?
Depends on what kind of editing and image adjustment you generally do. The mini comes with iLife, which includes iPhoto, which has all the usual array of adjustment tools for brightness, contrast, color balance etc, plus a useful one for tilting images to straighten them if taken at an angle, but it doesn't include the filters and effects of a true image editing application. Photoshop Elements on the other hand is feature rich and easy to use, though at a cost. Personally, I don't like iPhoto much and use Photoshop Elements, though there is also a truly excellent shareware application called GraphicConverter, which started life as a tool to convert images from one format to another (hence the name) but is now a very feature-rich image processor in it's own right. Worth a look and can be tried out for free. Have a look at http://www.lemkesoft.com/xd/public/content/index.cGlkPTE5Mw.html
--I use Quicken 2007. I read a couple of reviews of Quicken for Mac from unhappy customers. Any comments?
No experience of this personally, but I'd check those reviews and any others you can find to see what it is the writers liked or didn't like about using the software, and see if that helps you. There are always unhappy customers though, so reviews in magazines may be more objective.
--Can I use my existing external USB 2 or Firewire drives with my Mac Mini, even though they are partitioned as FAT32 and have many backup files from PC's on them? Do Mac Mini's write to FAT32 like Linux does, or do I have to reformat the drives?
You can use your FAT32 formatted drives with the Mac though you are limited to files of 4Gb maximum.
--I use Acronis True Image to backup & image my hard drives so I can restore them if disaster occurs (as it seems to, rather often). How do you image a hard drive with a Mac, and is it worth doing?
It IS worth doing, yes. I use SuperDuper! which is first rate and free for making complete duplicates of a drive, or $29 for the paid/registered version to allow incremental backups. Works like a charm. If you use a drive partitioned in the GUID scheme (as the mini's internal is) you can even then set that drive, and the cloned copy of your system to boot the mini.
--Is it worth it to use antivirus software on a Mac?
Personally I'd say yes. ClamXav is open source (thus free) and reliable, has a marginal hit on CPU load and helps ensure you don't inadvertently pass on infections (it can also spot types of malware such as phishing scames). As yet, however, there are no known viruses/worms/trojans that affect MacOS, so it isn't critical at this time. However at some point it is likely there will be - in my view it's better to be prepared than to be left to react at the time.
--Does anyone have any experience using open source software like Open Office or GIMP on a Mac?
Yes. Like all open source projects, there are some good and some bad, but by and large the open source community for MacOS based systems is active and effective. Both Open Office and Gimp work well for example.
--Are there any decent flight simulators that work on a Mac?
    X-Plane springs to mind.
There really are very few people you'll find in Apple Discussions who would flame you for asking such questions. Indeed, answering such things is one of the prime reasons we're here, and while there's always value in reading the manuals, it must also be said that in many ways getting useful information out of them means you have to know enough already to be able to work out what information you need from all the stuff available. Questions are easier to ask and pertinent information easier to give as a result!

  • Looking for 5.1.2 upgrade

    Hi,
I am running FCP 5.1 on a PPC G5 and am (ugently) looking for the manual 5.1.2 upgrade.
I found a package (36 MB) for download at a site of a university but it will not install: a error message keeps popping up telling me to use Apple's automatic upgrade process.
Can anybody point me in the right direction?
    Many thanks!
PS: an recent post pointed to Red Giant but the link has expired.

Sorry, 5.1.4 does not work for me, I really need 5.1.2. I work for a company that manufactures and sells equipment that runs in conjunction with FCP, and we have not yet tested with 5.1.4. For our equipment, the changes between different FCP versions are significant enough to put effort into finding just the right s/w.
    Anyone?

  • Thanks for helping me look for an answer. HD Codec for Quick Time?

Thanks everybody who sent me ideas on how to play a .mov Quick Time Movie Codec HDV 720p50, 1280x720. It's for playing on TV, as well as Mac and PC. Someone suggested H264, but I thought this is for the Internet, not for HD quality 1280x720?
Could it be that the Mac and PC people who can't play it don't have a strong enough video card in their computer? I'm looking at various answers.
    I appreciate any help gratefully.
PS: I didn't see Helpful above the window, only Yes question answered and No.

if you can't play an HDV file on your computer, it most likely means you don't have the HDV codec on your computer.
It's a free download - google it and you can find it. You will have to drop the codec into your Quicktime library - it's all explained in the download. I've installed it for several people and it solves that problem right away.

  • Looking for ATI Universal ROM upgrade

    Hello:
I am looking for the August 2005 ATI RADEON Universal ROM Update. Every link I have been able to find goes back to ATI, with a dead link. Is this update available anywhere else?
I am trying to make my Radeon 9200 Mac edition function with openGL 1.3, and the program calling for it says that I have 1.1 available, and need to update the vid card ROM.

Thanks for the link kmac1036. I've been looking all over the AMD support section trying to find this, and all they seem to have is the January 2005 update.

  • Evening folks...looking for some help about my iphone microphone

Evening folks....looking for some help.....I have a 3G Iphone and when I phone people they cannot hear me properly...sound like I am underwater....
Any ideas or suggestions gratelfully accepted..

I thought that is what the big deal was that people did not know until they opened the box and started using the iPhone 5, that it not only worked with one carrier but several carriers.  I did not say it will work with any carrier at one time.  I was trying to find out the reason for this and why people were so surprised that the iPhone 5 had this function and the reason for it.  As stated in my post, is it there so that after your contract is up and you want to go to another carrier you do not have to purchase a new iPhone, you  cna purchase a SIM card that works with your new carrier.
The Otterbox Defender has a tendency to let too much dirt, dust, etc. in the cracks on the case. At least this has been my expereince.  I was thinking something more along some of the really durable cases at BallisticCaseCo.com
As far as the iPhone 5 having issues, I have heard that there were more than usual with the first couple of manufactured batches that were shipped.  For example the Map App by Apple, the scratches on the backside of hundreds of iPhones, etc.  I am hoping these will get to be less and less, but with the recent riot at the one plant in China where the iPhone 5 is assembled is supposed to increase the waiting time.

I was wondering if anybody knows if this is do-able,
or even worth trying to do.
I have been producing local dance show DVD's for the past couple of years...
Not in HD, but I do shoot with multiple high end 3-chip cameras,
and the finished DVD's do have indexed menus for easy selections.
    Here's my question:
I need to upgrade to HD equipment but I can't do it all at once.
I'm thinking about purchasing a camera that shoots in AVCHD and was wondering how much of a headache it may become to edit combined with my present cameras.
I'd like to intermix my SD footage with the new AVCHD foootage (converted to Pro-res),
can this be done and multi-camera edited?
    Also,
would I be able to set the HD camera as my wide shot,
and then zoom in & keyframe my motion of this shot to follow the action in post?
My thinking was that I could probably zoom in to about 130% and still have better
quality than my SD cameras. (Also, my pans & zooms would be flawless)
    I have a G5 Quad (Power PC) running OS X 10.4.11
    and a Macbook-Pro (Intel) running OS X 10.5.8.
Both systems are presently using FCP-6.0.4.
    So here are my questions:
    Is it possible?
    Is it worth it?
And is AVCHD a good choice to upgrade to?
Thanks for any & all advise/opinions,
    Todd

The HMC40, or even something consumerish like the Canon Vixia, will shoot great looking stuff as long as it's not too low-light. AVCHD is automatically transcoded to ProRes upon Log and Transfer, so you shouldn't have to worry about that... though you'll save some HD space and increase your multicam streams if you upgrade to FCP7 and use ProRes (LT) instead.
If your final output is SD DVD, then you can indeed zoom up on the HD footage a bit and do some simple keyframing.
Multicam may require you to transcode your SD footage to the same codec (in this case ProRes), perhaps someone can confirm that.
Too bad Apple sees fit to insist upon transcoding H.264 to ProRes, when Adobe and Avid have proven it's not necessary... (cough)

  • Can't boot up but looking for new answers

I've looked on this forum back about three months but can't quite pin down the problem. I've got a MacBook from early 2008. We just bought it from a third party, and he had installed OS X v10.6. He did not include the original start-up disk(s) or any documentation (or the power cord, for that matter). Initially my husband booted it up, which took 17 minutes. He then shut it down to wait for me to arrive home. When I booted it up the next day, all I got was a white screen and the folder with question mark. I got my hands on a 10.5 disk and have been using that in various ways (C and D on start-up) and after several minutes the disk will eject spontaneously. A while ago this happened, and I just popped the disk back in, and after a few minutes I got a dark screen with a tiny line in the upper left corner of the screen. Nothing happened after that and I eventually shut it down.
I am able to get it into Target mode, but the G5 I have (on 10.5.8) doesn't mount it, so I can't even run disk utility.
I've taken the battery off and hit the power button for 5-10 seconds. I've taken out and put back in the RAM boards. I've switched their positions.
I've tried starting it up in single-user mode, but it won't do it. The power light won't come on, and the "caps lock" light doesn't come on. If I start it up with the option key pressed, the mouse pointer appears and responds to the track pad but then locks up after a few minutes. (This is the ONLY time the mouse pointer ever shows up).
It's looking like the guy who sold it to us is going to be a creep and not take it back. So if there's anything to be done, I would REALLY appreciate the help!!
    Thanks ...
    Lisa

Honestly, it sounds like this system has some pretty serious issues, and will likely need some expensive repairs. So, you can try taking the seller to small claims court for the cost of the machine, but ultimately you're probably just going to have to accept that you got ripped off and eat the cost. But take it to an Apple Store or AASP in your area to get them to diagnose what's wrong with it. My guess is they're going to say logic board, which will probably cost about as much as you paid for the system. But maybe there's something simple and cheap they can find.
Sorry you ended up getting ripped off, that's never fun. A repair estimate may help if you go to small claims court, and it is unlikely to hurt. If you decide to not go to small claims court, then be sure to name and shame the seller everywhere. However, that WILL likely HURT your chances of winning in small claims court, so only do it after or if you rule that option out.
