Looking for CD-R Identifier program for Mac

Does anyone know if there is a program similar to CD-R Identifier (which is Windows only) for use with OSX? I would like a program that can identify the manufacturer of blank CD/DVD media, the type of dye used, etc. I've searched all over but can't find any such program. If anyone knows of one, please let me know. You would be my hero for life...or at least for an hour or so.

Not sure if this is exactly what you need, but the unix command drutil will list the atip information so far as I can tell. Here's what ya do. Put in a blank cd, and go to Applications-->Utilities-->Terminal. Type:
drutil status
or try
drutil discinfo
or try
drutil atip
I don't think this is exactly what you are looking for, but maybe it will help. A lot more information on drutil is available at http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Darwin/Reference/Manpages/man1/drutil.1 .html. Good Luck!

  • I am looking for Mac software comparable to Microsoft's Digital image of which I really found great!

Am looking for a photo editing program comparable to Microsoft's Digital Image of which I had great success. I have tried quite a few other programs but they just don't match up. I could create posters, greeting cards , change hues, paintbrush, touch up photos, cut out items from pictures etc.etc. Please, anyone lead me to a good program for my Mac.

You may want to try iPhoto, which was preinstalled on your Mac, or Aperture, Photoshop Elements, GIMP, GraphicConverter, Acorn, or any of the many other apps you can find by entering "photo editor" into the search box in the App Store application. A lot of these will run rings around Microsoft's lightweight offering.

  • Looking for Mac network professional to setup our small business network.

I've installed OS X Server on an iMac within our office to act as a file server and also allow us to access files using a VPN.  Probably should have purchased a Mac Mini Server and will likely go that route in the end.
I'm computer savy, but little networks experience and just can't get this working correctly. If we had more time to dedicate to this and with help from this forum, I'm sure we could get it up and running.  The goal is to get a simple network going that will allow us to access files, etc in the field and at our home offices with the ability to grow as our business expands.
At this time I'd really like to have someone just handle the setup of the network so we can get functionality asap.  I've done some searches and looked for a network professional in our area with experience in Mac networking within a business environment, but haven't had much luck.
If anyone point me in a direction of someone that can help get this going I'd be forever greatful:)

I'm not a rocket scientist but I do have a working mail server and website using a mini mac and os x server (Mavericks).
It all begins with your DNS and I recommend you do use a mac mini with OS X Server as it's designed for that very purpose. You absolutely must get your DNS situation working first. There's a guy in this forum named Mr. Hoffman who is particularly useful (there are others) in this area. He has a website with lots of helpful advice and, in particular, this: http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1436.
However, before you embark on that journey, this is what you'll basically need to do:
You're going to need a public (external/public facing) DNS and a private (internal) DNS. Your private DNS (served by your os x server) needs to live behind some kind of hardware firewall/router to prevent the great unwashed and curious from venturing into places they probably shouldn't be venturing. It's port(s) should never be exposed to the outside world.
Get a static IP from your ISP and register a domain name.
Let your domain registrar provide the external DNS.
You'll want to set up an internal DNS using OS X Server in the 10.0.0.0/16 subnet (it doesn't seem to let you use 10.0.0.0/8 and it really hates 192.168.0.0/24).
The server itself will need to be "self-aware" by setting it's System Preferences > Network Preferences > DNS Server to 127.0.0.1.
Of course, once you get the DNS working you'll want to turn on File Sharing and then (and only then) Open Directory. THen you can begin adding other services such as web, mail, vpn, etc...
I'm sure there is lots more that I've missed but this should do for now. Good luck.

  • Looking for Mac Pro comparisons to first Mac Pro

I have a Mac Pro Quad bought the same day the first intel mac pros came out. I had a horrible experience with my local Apple Store at the Summit in the Birmingham, AL area which was followed by an even worse experience with the Apple Online support. After standing at the Mac Pro waiting for 45 minutes at the store without anyone approaching me at all, I had to leave and then called the same store during my last 15 minutes of standing there to see if someone who answered the phone would come to the front of the store. After I left it was 25 minutes later before someone finally answered the phone. They tried locating anyone in the store and finding that no person there had a clue they forwarded me to the Apple Care line. Again after a 15 minute wait for someone there I thought I had someone who would answer my question and she got lots of info and was looking up my computer details and was about to answer the question and she accidentally hung up on me and never called back - knowing that I have no way of getting back in touch with her. Over an hour and a half shot with no answer.
Now - what was the question - I have, as I said, an original Mac Pro (dual processor - duo core 2.66 Ghz with 4 GB Ram). I want real accurate net processor comparison data with the current dual Quad core Mac Pro computer. I don't just want to hear that "its a lot faster". The Apple website compares the previous 8 core with the current 8 core but nothing else. I would be happy with an accurate Specmark comparison. Other than basic browsing and email the vast majority of my work on the computer is video editing in Final Cut Pro and working with Adobe's Master Collection - Photoshop CS5, Premiere Pro, Flash, and Illustrator.
Since Apple has failed miserably at helping me I am hoping there might be someone here with some clue as to what I am looking for. The website compares todays 8 core with today's 12 core and shows that for $1,500 more you get 33% speed improvement. Naturally that is not a good return but I am 100% confident that data exists somewhere that accurately compares my computer to the latest 8 core Mac Pro.
    Thanks

I would direct you to Geekbench, Barefeats, MacPerformanceGuide for a couple starters.
4GB RAM is/was very minimal and basic.
What do you use and do on Mac Pro matters a lot as to what to expect.
The 3.33GHz 6-core with SSD boot drive would be good, with 3-4 x 8GB RAM.

  • Looking for Mac mini that will run OS9

I'm looking for a Mac mini that will run OS9 for a legacy accounting application. If anyone has one for sale please let me know. Thanks.

For the amount of money you'd spend on VMWare, you could get a Mac that does boot Mac OS 9. Plus you need one just extract the ROM file necessary to run 9 on VMWare. Doing so, may be illegal, because the ROM chip is a proprietary design. Just get a Mac that boots into Mac OS 9, unless you know Classic is all you need. • Looking for Mac Software to run a DJ Company.

I need some assistance for a software package that will allow me to book gigs for my DJ company.
    The list is long:
    - create a contract on my Mac (and would be a + if you could do all of the things on an iPhone)
    - without retyping all the customers information again print an envelope and a preset cover letter, and request sheet.
    - have field for received deposit or paid in full
    - ability to change terms and conditions
    - generate mass email
    - generate postal mailings to send Anniversary or Birthday cards to clients easily and quickly
    - once you send out that mailing, have a check box to remove customer from mailing list (IE they moved and mail was returned so you don't waste postage on your next mailing)
    - ability to input how many brides maids and groomsmen are in the party and it adjusts the bridal intro sheet. Also has space for songs to be played duringing intros, blessing, toast, garter, bouquet etc.
    - Has web enabled version so clients can see what dates are available and what dates are booked
My biggest problem is, when I book 1 job, I need to copy and paste info from one form to another. I'm looking to automate most of that process. I'd also like to have the ability when potential client calls my iPhone, I can check the date, book the job so the client sees their date is reserved on the web site, generate a contract on iPhone and email to the customer to book on the spot.
I can't find any entertainment booking software for the Mac, so I'll be happy with whatever I find. If you can write the application in FileMaker or some other means I'm all ears.

    < Edited by Host >

    Hi djgeorge,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
To be frankly honest I think your going to have trouble.
Let's go through it piece by piece
You could use MS Word or Pages to create documentation etc, those programs have the ability to work with templates on a large scale.
You can find many mass emailer programs, take your pick.
I don't know how you would geterate postal mailings for birthdays etc, a bit of scripting and work with iCal possibly?
FileMaker Pro is very useful for databasing information and for creating automated responses etc. I'm fairly sure you can manage online content as well.
That's the best I currently have.
    I will look around though.
    Kind Regards,
    Peter.
There is some software such as FileMaker Pro which is good generating email etc en mass.
You could probably use AppleScript or Automator and iCal to send

  • Looking for MAC/Aperture user in the Morgnatown WV area

    Greetings,
I am trying to find some help with a book project.
I have two strikes against me.
    1. I have no MAC
    2. I have no Aperture
I am trying to find a MAC users group or helpful person in the Morgantown WV area who would willing to lend me a hand a book project.
The project is turning this website: http://EpicRoadTrips.us/ca2007 into a book for my mother for Christmas.
There are nearly 800 images and nearly as much text.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks,
    -Mike

Kirk, thanks very much for taking the time to write me.
Thus far, this has been a frustrating disappointment and probably is not a feasible project.
Just what kind of "book" do you have in mind?
Basically a book version of the web site: a travelogue.
Format and size is yet to be determined but I am leaning towards landscape 11x8 or larger. I have been looking into VioVio (http://www.viovio.com) as a possible printing service.
The good news? I "borrowed" some of your online image files
What was the URL for the images you used?
I shoot with the web in mind so I must resize my images.
Usually I have a small image in with the text which is linked to a higher resolution image if anyone wants to see it.
    Such as:
    "Thumb"
    http://epicroadtrips.us/2007/summer/california/D1/web/ert07CAD121.jpg
    "HiRes"
    http://epicroadtrips.us/2007/summer/california/D1/web/hres/ert07CAD121.jpg
and most appear to be 180 DPI.
    How did you determine this?
I still do not understand how.
DPI is a printing term (dots per inch) and the more an image file has, the better (and larger), the image prints will display. 300 DPI would be much better and maybe you have them stored on your PC or camera memory card.
I know that 300dpi is considered a minimum for quality printing, but I have never been sure how to determine this. Usually, I just use the original image from my cameras when getting prints made.
For web use, I resize them to a width of 400-600px.
If only 180 files were shot you'll be limited in the display dimensions in your "book". More like 4X5 inch sizes (maybe even smaller) on glossy paper. But you could arrange the images "4 up" to print a larger "coffee table" size book if you wanted.
I went to the MAC lab here at WVU yesterday and test drove Aperture.
I was able to make three or so pages without much problem.
But, I could not find a way to resize the image containers as they are set up in the templates.
I could resize image containers which I added to the page template, but then I could not apply the template style to these containers. The were unstyled boxes, not like the ones in template.
See: http://epicroadtrips.com/matt/book-style/ss.jpg for the book style I was working with.
If your Mom has a computer you could just save your Web pages as PDF (Portable Document Format) and each "page" of your Web site could be joined together into a single file. With the correct tools (and an online connection) she could view the thumbnail images and text in their current form and a click on the thumbnails would load the full sized images in any browser.
She has no computer, never has and never will.
But, she is a lifelong bibliophile and a book of the website she would truly appreciate and cherish.
You may also want to take a look at the Apple TV appliance. It could display your images on any modern TV (no text) in a slideshow mode with dozens of transitions and even a custom audio track.
I thought about this, but she is nearly deaf and TV is still TV - not a book.
Last, but not least, is the power of QuickTime Pro. Very easy to make a custom side show from your images and add an audio track. Then just send this file to your DVD burning software.
You can add text tracks (text over images or "black") and audio and even some simple transitions to make a nice DVD version.
A good idea for sharing with others - but not my mom.
I may look into using InDesign for the PC, but the thought of placing 800 images and the related text is quite daunting to me. That is why I had hope to use Aperture. It is some what automated/pre-laid out, but allow some customization.
Thanks again for the ideas and suggestions,
    -Mike

  • Looking for Mac that can handle CPU intensive apps (Music & Video)

Hi everyone, I am looking to get a new mac in the near future but wanted to know which Desktop mac is best for music and video? I was thinking of the new iMac but not sure if they are powerful enough? I need something that can handle CPU intensive stuff. I will be using it mainly for video editing and music producing

    In a nutshell,
Look at the new 27 inch screen iMac models.
    Get the fastest optional CPU,
Decide which optional GPU you'd be comfortable with.
Get the base 8 GBs of RAM and then purchase extra, cheaper RAM through third party Mac RAM sellers.
Then add as much RAM as you think you need. The 27 inch screen models can take up to 32 GBs of RAM.
    Decide on optional storage sizes.
If you need a CD / DVD optical drive, these are no longer built-in and you will need to budget for a good external optical drive.
Budget for 3-year extended AppleCare warranty service.
In case of reliability issues with the first 5 years of operational life, the iMac will be covered with free warranty service for the first three years.
    Good Luck!

  • I'm looking For Mac Version intel Base Internet Explorer Browser

I need to Download the Internet Explorer browser so that I can use it to open a web Page from Staples to fill out a Job application Form, Safari and FireFox doesn't support that web page from staples. I am having a Hard time finding the right web site to download Internet Explorer, Does anyone know where I can download a Mac Version Intel Base Internet Explorer version?
    Mrs. Trisha Foster

Try changing the User Agent in Safari - enable the Debug menu.
Most web sites, you can tell them how to identify your browser as something other than what it is, just have to log out or reload.
Also, 98% will work with Opera which emulates IE quite well, but not always (I found 2 out of 2000 sites that would not). Another browser to look at: OmniWeb, Camino. I use Firefox 3.1a "TraceMonkey", OmniWeb, Opera (each has its own uses).
IE 5.2.3, I tried it, and it was terrible. It is old, and doesn't support any of today's web sites.
Otherwise, you are faced with running CrossOver Mac, or Windows in Fusion or Parallels, or installing on BootCamp.

  • Desperately looking for mac.h header for Solaris 10u7 (NOT opensolaris)

    Hi there,
for an experimental project I am trying to build a GLDv3 ethernet driver under Solaris 10 u7 x86.
Unfortunately building the driver requires some GLDv3 specific headers that are not shipped with
Solaris 10, because the GLDv3 interface is still unstable and therefore subject to change often.
Nonetheless I would like to build the driver, so does anyone out there have the following include files: mac.h, mac_ether.h, mac_flow.h, mac_provider.h? These must be for Solaris 10u7 or the driver will not build and/or work...
Again this is Solaris 10 not Opensolaris, and I cannot switch to Opensolaris for this project...
