Hi all, I use my Mac Pro mainly for recording/mixing music. Looking for a new, smaller (15''-17'') seccondary monitor for functions like MINI editing, plugin tweaking, etc. Any recommendations?

it would help if you could determine a budget and then shop for models within or slightly above that budget.
basically, some necessary items are switchable aspect ratio, underscan/overscan and then some sort of blue check for proper chroma and phase calibration. some monitors have a gray scale blue check which i think completely blows. it's better to have a monitor with viewable red, blue and green guns as the blue gun is more accurate for calibration than a grayscale blue check feature. also, there are other diagnostic functions that are viewable by using the red or green guns to view color bars.
some other nice features to have are horizontal/vertical delay, sdi inputs, hd-sdi inputs.
it's been mentioned in the last larry jordan newsletter than the crt monitor is going the way of the dinosaur and now sony and panasonic are marketing lcd products only. i think this is a very sad trend. as a freelance video operator/camera shader, i am of the opinion that lcd monitors are horrible; they hurt my eyes and the color rendition isn't as accurate as a crt. leitch is now manufacturing an lcd scope which is just terrible to behold. the black area of the vectorscope is a huge, amorphous blob of white light that shows no signal detail whatsoever.
i don't know what to make of larry's statement as a quick check of the sony business website reveals only bvm crt's in their product lineup, no more pvm series. i haven't looked at the panasonic product catalog yet.
although the sony pvm L5 that shane mentioned is a quality product, to my eyes, i would get an ikegami monitor but you'll find that the superior imaging of the ikegami also has a superior price point.
one last point, don't buy an used monitor from ebay, you don't know where it's been or how it's been treated. give jvc monitors a fair shake as well, not a bad product for the price, no matter what their reputation is.

I personally do not know of a program to convert like you request but you might check out http://www.versiontracker.com for programs. "WireTap Pro" can capture audio from any internal source ( http://www.ambrosiasw.com/news/ ) Of course, you'd need a player for the RAM file...

Looking for Users but Terminal says No such file or directory

Hi I'm trying to delete something out of my DVD Studio Pro cache but when I look for the Library it has gone. I've tried calling it up in Terminal with 'chflags nohidden ~/Library' and it comes back with No such file or directory. Has anyone lost their library completely?

Are you entering that command with the quotes? If so remove them. Also, use Go to folder (Cmd-shift-g) and enter just ~/Library. I bet everything is still there.

Why won't Adobe Acrobat or Reader for Mac maximize on second monitor?

Just what the question says. Running Mavericks, of course, and when I drag a Adobe Acrobat or Reader window to my second monitor and press the maximize button, it moves to the first monitor and maximizes there instead. No combination of modifier keys and maximize clicks will work either. The rest of my Adobe Creative Suite maximizes correctly on either monitor. What's with Acrobat?

I'm having the exact same issue... However, I do have the "Displays have separate spaces" option activated.
I can maximize a PDF on my larger primary monitor... But when I drag a PDF over to my smaller secondary screen and hit the maximize "+" button, it shoots the window back over to my other monitor.
Can someone help? This is driving me crazy. I also tried deactivating the "Displays have separate spaces" option to see if that worked... but that didn't.
Other apps work just fine. Chrome behaves exactly as I expect when hitting the maximize button.

Boot from Recovery HD upon startup hold-down keys Command R . Until you see the Apple logo then select language:English.click the Arrow (Next)
From the OS Utility, select Disk Utility then click Macintosh HD. click the Erase tab on the right side.
Format:Mac OS Extended(Journaled)
Name:Macintosh HD
And click Erase
Once Erase process is done, close Disk Utility and select the second option in the OS Utility which is Reinstall OS. Let it run. It should take about an hour to complete, this type os installation is internet dependent so somehow the completion of the process depends on internet speed as well.

What are some things to look for in a well designed paid or free font? How do I know if it will print nicely? What can I look for after typing some text in Photoshop or Illustrator to ensure that it is high enough quality for printing?

For print, 300 ppi is actually considered low resolution. High resolution is something about 2400 ppi and up. The average desktop laser printers you can buy today will do 600 ppi, and the high end desktop laser printers will go up to 1200 (sometimes even more).
On the other hand, 300 ppi is currently considered high resolution for a screen. The iPhone 4 for example, has 326 ppi, which is pretty high for a device of that size. In the coming years we will likely see tablet devices match up that resolution (the iPad first gen. has 132 ppi) and probably even surpass it.

What to look for when buying a second hand 8220 flip

I'm temted to buy a secondhand (2-3 month old) 8220 flip phone and although the seller seems OK in her emails, You never know. What must I look for in order to be reasonably sure of my purchase?
Also, this phone is locked to Rogers, can it be unlocked ? Where, How?

Looking for a few good balance transfer cards.

I am in the need of adding a few balance transfer cards to my wifes profile. I have about 15k total I want to transfer from my cards. I cannot open any new accounts right now because I opened 5 new cards in Dec-Jan and need to let them age. I want to get 2-3 depending on their limit so I dont go over 50% util on anyone of them. Her is TU 722 EQ 730. BK in 2009 clean since then. She burned Amex, NFCU, Citi, Barclays(although I know they dont long term BL) She currently hasCap One Plat 0/3,750Discover 5,150/10,000Amazon 0/5,000ToysRUs 0/4,000JCPenny 0/4,000CareCredit 0/6,000Best Buy 0/4,000 Right now I am thinking of theseQS Cap One (Pre Qualified 0% until april 2016 12.9% after and 0 AF) I would then combine all her other capone cards into this card down the road. Cheap but good word processor for mac?

Hey just got a Macbook today and the saleswoman said i have a 30 day trial of iwork. But after it runs out i would have to pay 80$ to buy it. Are there any word processors out there that are good and cheap? Also doesn't Microsoft Word work on Macs so I could just stick my Microsoft Word CD in and install that?

Don't overlook TextEdit.app which comes free on your Mac. TextEdit handles fonts, basic formatting, tables and spell-check well. It also saves to and opens a variety of formats including .doc (i.e. Microsoft Word).
Sure there isn't any track changes or grammar features, and it won't insert footnotes, or endnotes, and there are no built templates, no ability for mail merge or presets for labels, however, it does stay out of your way, and type.
other than that I would get the Student Edition of MS Word. Pages isn't so much a word processor as it is a desktop publishing / layout app.

I think you will find that even the cheapest cost more than a high quality camera.
Many amateurs either use the camera they shoot with or buy a cheap camera to act as a VTR. You can get a good cheap one for a quarter the price of a proper VTR.

Editing for air but no broadcast monitor

Hello. I hope you can help! I edited a :30 from footage off a Panasonic P2 camera (data files) that I treated like DVC50 NTSC 720x480 anamorphic. I do not have a broadcast monitor. The producer has one though, in another state. My question is, how to best color correct? Do I just follow the fcp scopes and go with that, or do I export out an fcp file or a QT file of the sequence and send it to the producer, who can then bring that into an fcp project and view it in the broadcast monitor? Or will levels be too far off with that export?

Scopes don't help your eye see the colors...judge how red RED is...or how far you can crush the blacks before people can't see anything, or how washed out the image might be. So unless you have a broadcast monitor, you cannot judge. Sure, your Producer will be able to see...but then will he do the color correction? Or will you try to do some sort of long distance over-the-phone color correction? Not that he will then be able to see what you are doing.
The best you can do is make it legal...whites and blacks hitting within legal limits. You won't have any reasonable way to tell what things look like.
If you are going to be doing this sort of thing for a living...color correcting and outputting the show master...then you need to invest in the proper gear. Or send the project/file out of house to have it color corrected by someone who does.
