Looking for cheap device to view VHS

I've done a quick search through the forums and haven't found an answer yet. I have an old pile of VHS tapes that I need to quickly scan through. I don't know whether there's anything worth saving (or if they have degraded enough to the point where they're no longer viewable), but I need a way to quickly plug in the old VCR into my MBP and casually go through them.
I've noticed a number of cheapie devices on the market. Can anyone recommend one that works well enough to just view them? If I find anything worth of value, I'll spring for better equipment later on (as I don't want to invest in a Grass Valley device at the moment), but for now I just want to go through the stack and put things into a bulk erasure pile as needed.
Thanks.

if you got the vcr, then i'd just hook it up to a tv. you can pick up an older analog, like a 13" or so at a goodwill or salvation army / similar resale shop. they are littered with them. now for converting, elgato makes a basic usb input under $100. the eyetv hybrid costs $50 more, but adds ota hdtv & fm tuner. grass valley is about the only one that still makes a firewire input box that doesn't cost a fortune. blackmagic also has some good stuff. I picked up a matrox mini, but it's an expresscard interface. hope to see some good boxes come out for this thunderbolt port...

  • Looking for a stylish pdf viewer to integrate into muse site. Any suggestions?

    Dear all,
I am looking for a stylish pdf viewer that i could integrate into a muse theme. I am after something that will give a similar effect to the page below.
    http://adoreum.com/magazine/
Any suggestions would be most welcome. I have heard that it is possible to do this using InDesign, is this a red herring???
    Many thanks in advance,
    Martin

No. Not for PDF viewing. Most people will view PDFs either through an Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat web browser plug-in or via web browsers that have built in PDF viewers such as Google Chrome.
What you're seeing on sites like the web site link you posted is a conversion of the PDF to another format in a "flip book" layout, a format that doesn't require the site visitor to install any plug-ins. The flip book would either be in Flash format for desktop computer browsers or HTML5 for both web browser and mobile device compatibility.
    One example is Flipgorilla: http://blog.flipgorilla.com/
It's a free PDF to HTML5 flip book creator. They even have a Wordpress plug-in. But I'm not sure how friendly its code would be to a Muse-based web site.

  • I am looking for a device that will answer phone calls on my Mac. I have had a Phonevalet, and it is great, but it is no longer made.

I am looking for a device that will answer a landline phone. I have a Phonevalet, which answers, takes messages, has call block and is pluged into my Address Book, but it was discontinued, and I would like to add another line. Ovalabs made a similar device, but it also is gone. Is ther a way to use an Apple Modem to take calls? Any other product? The best part of the PhoneValet for me was it would announce the caller ID over my stereo (pluged into my Mac) and I could hear who was calling in my workshop and decide if I wanted to interupt the call.

I know I'm talking about expensive apps, but having been in prepress for about 30 years now, I really don't look at anything other than Quark XPress or InDesign for page layout apps. Your printing vendor will also be much happier with you when you use these products. Some areas of the U.S. tend to be mostly Quark oriented; others, InDesign. Ask your vendor what they would prefer, and if there are any free or cheap alternative apps they'll accept documents from.
Apple's Pages app (part of iWork) is a decent page layout program, but hasn't been updated in four years. It also doesn't support CMYK. If you place a CMYK image in the app, it will export out an RGB version of it. Not good! You can work with RGB images if you prefer, but your CMYK translations will be left to the skill of the print shop you use to do the conversions.
Don't even think about using Word. It has what it calls a page layout option, and does pretty much work like one, but there's no good way to import it into a real layout app such as InDesign. You end up paying the printer for their time to rebuild your entire project in either XPress or InDesign so they can actually do something with it.

  • Looking for a device to control the incoming audio

    Hello together,
I use my MacBook Pro as a visual artist, who does audio-reactive stuff.
I usually hook up to the DJ mixer, who provides me with a stereo cinch signal.
But every DJ mixer has a different signal level. And often the DJ gets drunk & turns up the volume during the night.
I'm looking for a device that I can plug between the DJ's cinch cabel and my microphone input jack at my MacBook Pro. A device that shows me the actual signal level via LED or a gauge and let me adjust the audio level. Up or down. To make sure I always have (more or less) the same level reaching my MBP.
I cant open the SysPrefs 10x a night to adjust the audio signal. Plus I want to protect my MBP agains high peak levels.
Maybe something like this microphone thing:
    http://behringer.de/MIC100/index.cfm?lang=ENG
    Do you have other suggestions?
    Kind regards, Jan

    Hi,
The item you listed is a pre-amp usually used in conjunction with microphones to provide phantom power (to large diameter mics) and to boost/warm their signal.
From your description, it seems you are looking for an audio interface. An audio interface would convert the incoming signal from analog to digital at the interface, instead of inside the computer, and route the signal into your computer through the firewire or usb (depending on model) port. The advantage is that the AD/DA converter on these units is normally of much higher quality than the one included with the macbook pro and the signal is subject to less interference.
I've linked a unit in the mac store http://store.apple.com/us/product/TQ936Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDA3MA&mco=MjE2MzAxNw which is very popular, but it's a little pricey considering it's only 2 channel but then, for your application, that's all you'll need. There are cheaper alternatives to be found at music hardware sales websites eg. musiciansfriend.com . Again, you'd search for 'audio interface' for a mac.

  • Looking for cheap Audio converter RAM to MP3 ?

Subject : Looking for cheap Audio converter RAM to MP3 ?
Dear All, We would like to convert a RealAudio "ram" file to Mp3. Is there a "free / shareware" pogram to do this ? Otherwise, what should I do ?
    Thnaks. Kevin in Lille

I personally do not know of a program to convert like you request but you might check out http://www.versiontracker.com for programs. "WireTap Pro" can capture audio from any internal source ( http://www.ambrosiasw.com/news/ ) Of course, you'd need a player for the RAM file...

In your reply you stated that iPad microphone is not very sensitive. And that you could hardly hear the play back.
Are you speaking of a speaker's  nature voice or an individual using an audio system. Also how close were you to the speaker?

    For the BlackBerry?
Try getting a new theme for the device, look for one that is called a "Today" theme, which includes calendar and task items.
You don't say what model you have, but look at various theme sites, like phttp://www.pimpmyberry.com/

  • Looking for a way to view all changes made with subversion [image]

    Hi guys,
My upfront apologizes if this is not the right forum... I'm using a subversion with eclipse and wonder if there is a better way to VIEW all changes made to my code. Right now, if I wish to know of a change I need to "compare with" and choose a version - this gives me only one file and it's really hard to go through 10+ files.
Question: is there a better way to do that? meaning a webpage I can refer to and see all code that was changed/added/deleted? (the idea is to look at it at the end of the day and see all changes)
something that can provide a snapshot like this image.
The picture above is from Trac but I found it SOO hard to install. Wonder if there's a way just to view changes.
    Thanks for any pointers

You mean viewing all changes over a codebase, as opposed to a single file?
I do that like this on the command line:
svn diff -r1234:1244 path | vi -(where the numbers are whatever revision numbers I want to compare, and "path" is a path under source control)
I'll bet you can configure Subversion to take a diff tool that you specify.
If you want to do this under Eclipse specifically... then you probably want to check with an Eclipse forum somewhere. Eclipse is not a Sun/Oracle product, so it's not here. Try eclipse.org, probably.

  • Looking for a better photo view program

    Hi there,
I changed from windows to a Mac for my photo work and artwork. I use my high resolution photos to draw and capture portraits for my clients. I am dissapointed to find out that preview only allows me to zoom at set percentages. like 25,50,75 and 100 for example.  So the picture ends up to small or way to big. Some of my work may need to me say 30 or 35 for example. I use to be able to zoom with windows by sliding a bar across the bottom of the view, this way it goes just 1% at a time and I can make it the exact size I need. This is so important for me as the porporations of my photo has to be the exact same size as my art piece to look right. Any suggestions for a program that zooms like windows?
    thanks

iPhoto doesn't do what you want either?

  • Looking for cheap-reliable-DV Players to log footage

I'm in the market for a consumer oriented dv-vtr player. I've looked around but mostly I'm finding pro-players way out of my price range...
Any models that are extra good???

I think you will find that even the cheapest cost more than a high quality camera.
Many amateurs either use the camera they shoot with or buy a cheap camera to act as a VTR. You can get a good cheap one for a quarter the price of a proper VTR.

  • Little progress = still looking for usb devices

hey there. i am running Arch w/ 2..6.7
my usb system seems to be jaxed up. xcdroast did not find my usb cd/writer and although gtkam selects the right camera for my usb camera, it gives me an error like
    "cannot list folders in / " -
i may have some kernel modules that still need to load but i dont know which ones.
any help here would be great. How do you get usb working in Arch ? thanks all

ok, well i got the usb camera working. Google prodced this, modprobe ochi-hcd. so i did that and added it to rc.conf and now the camera works ok. still think i am going to go for digikam though. he he.
the CDRW is a TDK usb one. Its usb 2 but i think that my motherboard usb port is only usb 1.
It works fine in Debian ( which i got rid of for Arch ) and thats cool. This is the last piece of hardware now i have yet to get going.
the google results also suggested loading echi-hcd but when i tried the messsage i got was "could not find module echi_hcd.

  • Looking for read-only remote viewer app

Does anyone know of a remote viewer app which allows you to see a computer screen (XP, Windows 7) on the iPad but does not allow interaction with the PC, i.e. a read-only remote viewer?

The brand name alone doesn't help at all. Specific model numbers are required. Not all models of devices even support third-party remotes. As the iPad doesn't have IR, remotes need to work over WiFi on a local network, so if your device doesn't have WiFi, it isn't going to be controllable by an iPad.
