Looking for dual-band option in Time Capsule

I read with great interest the on-line article in Macworld that described the improvements with this week's AirPort updates because I run two access points in tandem: An old Linksys 802.11g device for my "legacy" systems, and an Apple Time Casule (configured to 802.11n at 5 GHz) for my newer systems. So I immediately updated the AirPort software in my 5-month old Time Capsule and the AirPort utility on my Mac so I can use the Time Capsule in dual-band (simultaneous 2.4 and 5GHz) mode so I can simplify my network and honorably retire the Linksys.
To my surprise, I find that, after updating, there is no difference in the configuration options for my Time Capsule; I seem to be limited to EITHER 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz operation. Is there a setting that I'm just not seeing?
If anyone could shed some light, or provide a "how to guide," I would be most grateful.
Thank you.

Sorry, Simultaneous Dual-Band is an option available only to the new hardware (SKU MB763LL, 764LL,765LL).

Need to spell this out a bit more..
But speed via 2.4ghz to the TC is restricted by Apple to max 130mbps link speed.. much slower actual transfer.. latest TC and laptops can do 450mbps on 5ghz but you need to be up close.. so place the TC near the device using it.. and force 5ghz connection by using a different name for 5ghz network.

  • New Time Capsule: Ideal Configuration Advice needed for dual band

I am updating/changing my wireless network to incorporate a 2TB Time Capsule instead of an Airport Extreme (not dual band but 80211.n). I have 2 old Airport Expresses (80211.g) that I will replace with newer 80211.n versions for AirTunes and wireless printing. My Airport Extreme still works and can also be used to extend the network.
I want to set up the new version of the network to use the dual band wisely given the items in my household that will be using it. I’m afraid I don’t quite understand what the ideal setup would be and hesitate to dismantle my currently working system before I’ve mapped out what I ought to do for the new one.
The wireless items that need to use the network:
    MacBook Pro (circa 2007, Intel)
(needs to be backed up on Time Capsule daily, holds the large iTunes Library & large iPhoto library)
    iBook (circa 2004)
    iPhone 3GS
    Wii
    LG blu ray player
(n compatible... not currently in my network but will be added once the new network is up and running... hoping to use it to wirelessly download HD movies at 720p at least)
AirTunes (2 systems, using Airport Express units)
Canon printers (2... not wireless themselves but using Airport Expresses... I have 2 old Expresses or I can use the Extreme or the TC or piggy back on one of the Expresses that is supplying AirTunes)
TiVo series 2 DVR wireless connection (I do not know if this is n or g compatible. It’s several years old so I suspect g.)
Can someone point me to documentation that will help me understand my choices and possibilities, not just the technical how-to? Is there an ideal setup that's obvious to those of you with experience?

Hello KristenLC. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
There are a number of things to take into consideration when "designing" a network. One of them is the bandwidth requirements of the network clients. Staying with this topic and based on your hardware: the MacBook Pro (Time Machine backups), LG player (Video streaming), & TiVo (Video streaming) will all require the most bandwidth. Streaming audio to the AirPort Express Base Stations (AXn) would most likely be the next in line for bandwidth. The iPhone, Wii, and iBook would probably require the least.
As such, you want to place your networking clients on the appropriate network infrastructure that would provide them with the best bandwidth possible for their needs. Ethernet will provide the best bandwidth, followed by 5 GHz 802.11n, 2.4 GHz 802.11n, and then, 2.4 GHz 802.11g.
So with not knowing where the desired location of your hardware, I can only recommend the following:
    1) Connect the MBP, either by Ethernet or 5 GHz 802.11n, to the Time Capsule (TC).
    2) Connect the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), by Ethernet, to the TC.
    3) Connect the LG, either by Ethernet or 5 GHz 802.11n, to either the TC or AEBSn.
    4) Similarly, connect the TiVo, either by Ethernet or 5 GHz 802.11n, to either the TC or AEBSn.
    5) Join both AXn to either the TC or AEBSn by 5 GHz 802.11n.
    6) Connect the iBook, either by Ethernet or 2.4 GHz 802.11g to the TC.
    7) Connect the iPhone by 2.4 GHz 802.11g to the TC.
    8) Connect the Wii, either by Ethernet or 5 GHz 802.11n, to either the TC or AEBSn.
Can someone point me to documentation that will help me understand my choices and possibilities, not just the technical how-to?
One excellent source would be from the Take Control series of guides. In particular, I would recommend that you check out: "Take Control of Your 802.11n AirPort Network" by Glenn Fleishman.

  • 5GHz option in time capsule settings

have also posted this in the airport extreme forum.
with a 2009 1 GB time capsule running airport utility 6.1 on mountain lion :
should i activate the 5GHz option under wireless settings in airport utility?
should i rename it different from my regular network, or let it be named the same by default?
why are there only a few countries in the drop down selection list? i am not in any of those, so can i just cheat and select any one?
would my 2009 time capsule be capable of dual band transmission, not just the 5GHz ... the wife and some visiting guests run android phones and MS laptops.
what would run faster because of this 5GHZ option .. just my macbbok pro, and not my iphone and ipads?
i've not managed to figure these questions out by googling, so hoping someone weighs in here.

If your 2009 TC is a Gen2.. A1302 then yes it can do both bands simultaneously..
    So activate the 5ghz.
Change the name to SMB standard.. short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.. the present name will give most non-apple (and even some idevices issues). Apostrophe in particular is not legal character in the windows world.. same applies to 2.4ghz btw which the iphone and probably android phones will use.
why are there only a few countries in the drop down selection list?
Because yours is an American release model.. Apple restrict models to regions.. it is in the part number.. your TC is USA release one, and can only be set to your region.. you cannot change regions.. Why, ask Apple. They deliberately limit it in bios.
what would run faster because of this 5GHZ option
5ghz is much faster.. but poor range.. you will get better speed from 2.4ghz at distance.. not all devices can connect to 5ghz as mentioned. What does connect and is able to do so nearby will be faster.

  • How to deselect the "close network" option with Time Capsule?

After selecting the "close network" option in the settings I lost connection.  When I check the Utility AirPort the machine looks for wireless devices but finds nothing because it's hidden.    How do I deselect  the "close network" option and see my network again?   Tks!!!

Temporarily, connect an Ethernet cable from your computer to one of the LAN <--> ports on the back of the Time Capsule and turn off the wireless on the computer.
Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Click the Wireless Network Options button
Remove the check mark next to "Create a closed network"
Click Update to save your settings and allow 25-30 seconds for the Time Capsule to restart.

  • Using AE for dual-band setup

In the Designing Airport Networks book they show using a couple of Extremes or one Extreme and one Time Capsule for setting up a dual-band network.
But would it be possible to use one AE bridged with ProxySTA and connected wired to an Extreme and do the same thing?
    thanks

But would it be possible to use one AE bridged with ProxySTA and connected wired to an Extreme and do the same thing?
Not sure what you mean by that.
To create a dual-band network all you need is one 802.11n base station and one 802.11g base station. They can be from any manufacturer. The trick is to disable the DHCP server on the base station not directly connected to the internet.

  • Looking for dual wireless rechargeable headphone system with dual docks

I'm looking for a pretty specific product, and was wondering if anyone knows of a product that'll fit the bill.
I want a wireless dual headphone system with a charging dock for each headset. Transmitter should accept line level signal from dual RCA plugs. I'd prefer a 900mhz transmitter, but IR is acceptable. Either the system should come with two headsets or it should be a system with a transmitter/headset with the option to add a charging dock and an additional heaset.
My old system was a Sony which is on its last legs, and I found a replacement from another manufacturer with dual headsets but it lacks charging docks - you have to plug the heaset into the transmitter and both heasets can't be charged at once. Also, the manufacturer says not to charge a headset for more than 24 hours or you can damage the battery.
Anyone know if Sony or someone else makes what I want?
    Solved!

    Hi Verne,
Sony does not have manufacture dual Wireless Headphones. You can perform an Internet search and check for any third party dual headphones.

  • Configuration for dual-band WLAN?

I have an X230T with Intel N-6205 and 2x2 antennas.  AFAIK it is capable of parallel WLAN connection on both the 2.4 & 5 GHz for maximum bandwidth. How should I configure my WLAN to take advantage of this.  Should both 2.4 and 5 GHz networks have the same SSID?
    X320T running Windows 8 Pro x64

Actually, those settings I provided you are from my Intel Dual Band Wireless-N 7260 adapter so some settings are a bit different, but it should work for all Intel Wi-Fi cards.

"I also have a secondary router, whose 2.4GHz radio I had set to 20 MHz BW, as there are more other 2.4 GHz WLANs near it.  ISTR reading that the narrower BW can actually yield improved throughput under such conditions, and the secondary router has no "auto" BW option.  What do you think of this?"
P.S. If I understand "NS offload for WoWLAN" correctly, it seems to be enabled.
At least, the WLAN adapter appears to turn itself on, even with the laptop powered down and connected to a wired ethernet.
As billbolton pointed out, he is 100% correct that "The 2.4GHz WiFi band has become so congested with competing traffic in many densely populated locations that useful 300Mpbs connections are quite unlikely to be achieved."
Based on many networking articles, 300 Mbps is achieved through channel bonding (40 MHz) on both bands. Since channel bonding makes the channels wider, this would actually result to more overlapping with other channels from routers nearby on the 2.4. Channel overlapping should be avoided since it induces more interference thus making your ping spike often as well as frequent reduced throughput and link speed. On the worst case, you will experiece dropped connections. If you absolutely have to work on the 2.4 GHz band with a lot of neighors, you can leave the Wi-Fi adapter settings I provided to be the same, but you have to change the channel width on the router to 20 Mhz only for 2.4 GHz band and leave the 40 MHz channel width on the 5 GHz band. This would cut the speed to 156 / 150 / 144 Mbps on 2.4 GHz band only, but you only occupy 2 adjacent channels from the channel you're broadcasting instead of taking over more than half of available channels using 40 MHz. Like many networking articles online, 40 MHz is ideal for 5 GHz since very few people use that band and there are far more available channels to choose for the 5 GHz without overlapping with other channels nearby.
As for your PS note, the reason the WLAN adapter is awake while the computer is asleep is due to Intel Smart Connect Technology: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/architecture-and-technology/smart-connect-technology.html

  • Airport Express for Itunes Invisible After Adding Time Capsule to AX Networ

One step forward, one step back.
I have an airport express linked to my airport extreme network for itunes streaming. It's worked fine forever. I recently added a time capsule to the extreme network for backup purposes using Time Machine. The extreme and TC form a single network are both connected via ethernet. The TC and express are in the same room. Time machine now is working fine. However, the airport extreme is no longer visible in itunes or airport utility. The light is green on the express and I was able to verify the settings when connecting it directly with an ethernet cable.
In setting up the AX/TC network, it called for the setting 'extend this network' not to be checked. Could that be it? As I recall, it wasn't anyway.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
    JB

Got this working by directly connecting the Express and TC with and ethernet cable. I don't know if this is the right way for this to work since the two devices just happen to be near enough to do that. That said... I'm happy it's working.

  • Back and sharing solution for Macbook Pro - Synology or Time Capsule?

    Hi
    Hi,
My plan is to have a complete new efficient and flexible set up. I have decided to buy the new Macbook 13inch Pro with 16MB Ram and 3.1 Ghz i7 processor with 256GB glash drive.
I want an external solution for my storage and sharing needs.
    Minimum requirements -
    - Time Machine backup support for computer
    - External storage for 95% of my data (kind of like dropbox) including music, movies, photos, business and personal data, but that can be accessed easily and quickly and functions properly on my computer. (e.g when connecting to itunes and other apps)
    - Remote access to this data when required
    Additional Preferences
    - Easy to use (I am a newbie on Mac laptops!)
    - Back up additional devices or at least upload photos from ipad and iphone
    - Connect movies to Roku
    - Easy access to data wirelessly from outside the country
    - Support external plugin hard drive
    - Quiet and low power consumption
I like the flexibility of the Synology but I know that apple usually works best with apple devices, so due to my inexperience in the apple environment I need a little help.
Is the Synology best for my needs (if so which model) or the Time Capsule and just plug in my usb hard drive? (I don't want to spend a fortune but $100 more for the best set up is acceptable)
Thanks so much for your help
    Mike

A third-party NAS is unsuitable for use with Time Machine, especially if it's your only backup. I know this isn't what you want to hear. I know that Time Machine accepts the NAS as a backup destination. I know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and I also know that it usually seems to work. Except when you try to restore, and find that you can't.
Apple has published a specification for network devices that work with Time Machine. None of the third-party NAS vendors, as far as I know, meets that specification. They all use the incomplete, obsolete Netatalk implementation of Apple Filing Protocol.
If you want network backup, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external storage device connected to another Mac or to an 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base stations support Time Machine, not any older model.
Otherwise, don't use Time Machine at all. There are other ways to back up, though none of them is anywhere near as efficient or as well integrated with OS X. I don't have a specific recommendation.
If you're determined to use the NAS with Time Machine, your only recourse for any problems that result is to the manufacturer (which will blame Apple, or you, or anyone but itself.)

  • I'm looking for an example of Session Time Warning dialog

I'm looking for an example of a Session Timeout warning dialog to warn a user that their session is about to expire.  I'd really like it to have the option to extend the session or logout.
I have a user submitted Webapp with several fields and an image upload.  The image upload is for a copy of a professional state license.  When the user gets to this field in the form, they realize that they have to scan their form first.  They leave the Webapp Input form open, get their image uploaded finally, submit the form, then they get a message that they are no longer logged in. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

If your doing work on the front end like this and you feel the form is to long or things like file upload takes too long then build a multi-step form process and have the image as one of the latter steps so you can start saving the data.

  • Best prepaid carrier for dual-band iphone 4s A1387, unlocked by AT&T?

Hello -- I acquired a fine 16gb iphone 4s A1387, which is supposed be a "dual band CDMA & GSM world phone."
It was formerly on AT&T but has been unlocked by AT&T.
Do I have the best of both worlds? Can I go on either a CDMA or GSM network?
What would be your recommendation for a prepaid plan? My preference is to buy a block of minutes and GB good for an extended period, rather than a monthly plan.
How can I set up this phone to switch to wifi for Internet access when wifi is available?

If the phone was originally set up for AT&T, it can only be used for other GSM carriers. It cannot be used with Verizon or Sprint as they require the phone be in their database in order to be used - and they do not allow you to bring your own phone.

  • Automatic Backups for PC (Vista & XP) using Time Capsule

Does anyone know if PCs (Vista & XP) can be configured for automatic backup on Time Capsule?
We have 4 Macs running Leopard and the auto backup is working fine there.
Additionally, we have a couple of PCs running Vista & XP and I would like them to auto backup also.
    Thanks for your help!

No problem with the Windows part. First map a drive to the TC seems to be more stable then using the Airport utility. Then use the free NT backup utility that comes with XP, you will need to copy the utility and chm and the files ntmsapi.dll and vssapi.dll into a folder on the Vista machine but it will work fine. Also need to enable the Removable Storage management feature in the OS.
Another solution, consider Microsoft OneCare, it has a good backup feature.
    Hope this helps

  • Looking for dual iPad 2 iPhone 4s dock

I'm looking for a dock or cradle what will let me place an iPad 2 or iPhone 4s on it, to sync via USB or charge via USB, i.e., leave it connected to the USB port on the computer.  I currently have a dock like the iPad 2 dock shown below, and it does work with the iPad AND iPhone 4s, but the iPhone 4s doesn't seem to fit correctly.  The fit is "squishy", and I have to almost force the iPhone to connect.  But it does connect and sync and charge.
I was looking one by Ezopower, but you had to set push buttons in 4 different configurations depending on if you wanted to charge/sync the iPad/iPhone.
Can anyone recommend a dual use iPad/iPhone dock similar to the one below that would support an iPad 2 AND iPhone 4s?

So, I've now purchased a 27" Cinema Display and used it with my Late 2008 13" Aluminum Unibody Macbook as well as with my Mid 2009 15" Aluminum Unibody Macbook Pro. I had some flickering issues when I first connected the Macbook Pro, let it go to sleep, and woke it up. But after I rebooted the Macbook Pro, and disconnected and reconnected the MDP cable, the power cable (from the Cinema Display to Macbook Pro), and the USB cable, the flickering issue seems to have gove away. I have read reports of the same issue, and the fix seems to have been to not use the power supplied to the Mac by the Cinema Display. However, after I replugged all the cables, there's no more flickering. I even tried to disconnected the Macbook Pro and connect the Macbook, and then the other way around. Everything seems to be fine.
So, now I really need to know how to connect my iPhone 4S and the iPad 2 to this display. Doesn't anyone have any suggestions?
