Looking for excellent 4TB storage solution

Thanks in advance for any advice.
All of our video is now tapeless of course, and i'm rapidly eating up storage space.   I have a WD 2TB drive i got at Costco that just about failed on me, which freaked me out.   So i am looking for a new piece of hardware with primary purpose to store video.
It can be hardwired or wireless (slight preference for wifi, but not deal breaker).   Ultimately it must be excellent from a hardware perspective.    I've looked at the Apple Time Capsules and Airport Extremes.   The reviews are pretty mediocre, which makes me gun-shy.
Any suggestions welcome.
Thanks
Chris

IMHO WD exteral HD's have the highest failure rate, the drives themselves are fine it is the enclosures WD uses. Many experienced users on these forums (including myself) only use OWC Mercury Elite Pro series. Extremely high quality and reasonable pricing. You can find them by clicking Here .

  • Task Privileges for Existing Users - Looking for a global update solution

After some reading I understand that if you set the task privileges for the PUBLIC user in the Privileges section of Discoverer Administrator (10g), any new user created in the system will pick up the privileges you have assigned to the PUBLIC user.
I currently have 4000+ users who have access to Discoverer Plus and the ability to create/edit queries. I want to limit who can access Discoverer Plus functionality to approximately 150 users.
I have changed my PUBLIC user to NOT have privileges but this will only affect new users. Is there any way to restrict 4000+ users without having to go through each user individually and set the privileges.
I am looking for a global update solution. I am wondering if this can be done through the back-end.

    Hi Mezzobella
If you change the rights for the public user then other users, who have not been manually adjusted in any way, will automatically pick up the public rights. Therefore, if you have a lot of users that are not changing this means that at some point in their life you will have clicked OK or Apply on the screen with a user displayed. This now assigns the rights to that user as opposed to inheriting them from the public user.
What you are describing is the perfect reason why you should not administer Discoverer using user accounts but to use roles or responsibilities instead.
In your case you are now somewhat stuck. The programatic way to revoke these rights is to drop rows from the EUL5_ACCESS_PRIVS table but this could take longer than doing inside Discoverer. Basically, when a user has been granted privileges one row per privilege is inserted into this table. The column AP_EU_ID contains the ID of the user. The column GP_APP_ID is the one that tells you what privilege a user has. Here is a list of the privileges:
    1000 Desktop / Plus Privilege (U)
    1001 Create / Edit Query (U)
    1002 Item Drill (U)
    1003 Drill Out (U)
1004 Grant Workbook (aka Sharing) (U)
    1005 Collect Query Statistics (U)
    1006 Admin Privilege (A)
    1007 Set Privilege (A)
    1008 Create / Edit Business Area (A)
    1009 Format Business Area (A)
    1010 Create / Edit Summaries (A)
1011 Not used as far as can be determined
    1012 Schedule (U)
1013 User is never required to schedule workbooks (U)
1014 Save workbooks to database (U)
    1015 Managed scheduled workbooks (A)
1016 This is an apps mode EUL
1017 This is the user's assigned language
1018 User is allowed to change password
1019 to 1023 Not used as far as can be determined
    1024 Create Link (U)
    Note: A = Admin privilege, U = User privilege
Theoretically you could manually delete rows from this table and that will revoke the rights. In reality, Oracle do not like it when inexperienced users manually the EUL as you could corrupt it. Therefore, any manual updates must be done with utmost caution after making sure you back up or have a copy of the table you will be updating - just in case.
Try running this query to see the content:
    SELECT DECODE( AP_EU_ID, 104198, 'Viewer', 103697, 'Plus', 'Other' ) "Who" , AP_ID, AP_TYPE, AP_EU_ID, AP_PRIV_LEVEL, GP_APP_ID, GBA_BA_ID, GD_DOC_ID, AP_ELEMENT_STATE
    FROM EUL5_ACCESS_PRIVS
    Best wishes

  • Looking for some RAID storage ideas...can anyone help?

Hi, I'm looking for some recommendations out there. I'm going to be getting a new PowerMac tower with a cinema display and will also be looking to get some RAID-type storage for it so that I can do lots of video editing and photo storage.
Ideally, I'd like to get a rack-type storage with swappable drives much like the XServe RAID but I don't need it to have server capabilities like the XServe does, i.e. I'm not going online with anything. This is purely going to be working as an external storage tower that two adjeacent computers will be directly firewired to.
Obviously, the XServe would fit this, but like I said, I don't need the computer/server capability and also would not want to spend $6000 just for a single TB of storage that the XServe has. I'm thinking more along the lines of a swappable drive rack system like the old Avid systems used to have 10 years ago. Does anyone know if Apple makes such a thing? Or if any third party companies do?
    Thanks.

If you are using typical DV cameras you don't need striped RAID to capture the video or edit it either. And striped means you lose one drive you lose two drives worth of data.
The LaCie Bigger and Biggest disks may be suitable solutions, they are hardware RAIDed internally and come in 1 and 1.5TB models, using FW 800 they are plenty fast for video.

  • Looking for an Audio Server Solution

Alright, so I've got a headless server running in my bedroom that I use for storage.  I already stream media to my ps3 using ps3mediaserver, but what I'd really like to be able to do is play music remotely from my desktop and laptop.  I've spent some time looking around for solutions, but can't really come up with anything.  As such, I'm looking for some help!
    What I'd like to do:
    * Keep all music stored on the server
    * Access the music remotely in a nice gui interface (Rhythmbox would be ideal, but something similar would work too)
    * Play the music out of my desktop or laptop's speakers, not out of the server
I played around with mpd some, but ultimately gave up.  I could get it to stream with http, but I was having to stream it to vlc and control it with another program... Not the best solution.
Any ideas?  All help is greatly appreciated

  • Direct Attach SATA 4TB Storage Solution

I need to purchase a Direct Attach storage device. It will need to store 3-4TB of video files. I have narrowed down my search to three companies: Dulce Systems (4TB Quad), Sonnet Technologies (4TB Fusion), and CalDigit (HDPro). My budget is $5000. I am looking for any suggestions or feedback on any of these systems or advice on another system. I am finding it very difficult to find people who have worked with any of these devices other than the sales staff for each company. This is a big investment for me. I want to make the most informed decision I can. This forum has always had good advice, Im hoping a few people can help me out.

I got this Westerndigital world edition II Hard Disk 1GB. It is very slow and require mionet(WD AccessAnywhere)/internet connection to be recognised in my computer. You can use it without mionet but you have to map each folder to appear in my computer (it will appear in my network places). You also need to be consistent as everything you create using mionet you can't change without it and vice versa. It is based on SAMBA only so no NFS, etc.
Mionet is interesting if you travel a lot. It will make you be able to share your file anywhere in the world (they said securely) but it is not free. There is yearly fee.
Its transfer speed is only about 5MByte/s (around 40Mbps which explain my network utilization of around 40% on fast ethernet) because it is the limit of their internal processor (I ask WD about this so it is acurate). So it does not matter whether you got gigabit ethernet or not. Also it has limit on the file sized transfered. I have successfully transfered around 4 GB at a time (takes about 20min) but I when I transfered 12 GB (12 big files around 1 GB and few small files) it choked near the end (report error).
It's 2 TB also based on 2 1GB HD with JBOD so it does not provide safety of data redundancy. It does offer RAID 1 (mirroring) but you got only 1TB.
I use it for backup of my video (DIVX, XVID, WMV, etc) and it can stream these file OK. I have no idea how it will handle bigger data rates.
I agree the fastest way is using eSATA drives. I plan to buy another 1GB eSATA drives when the price drop to store video and use WD as other purpose. Hope it helps.

  • Looking for good firewall/router solution

    Hi.
Im setting up a network and im wondering wich type of device i should use. The question is if i should use a firewall and a layer 3 switch for inter VLAN routing or if i should use a router solution with built-in firewall (like zone-based) and just layer 2 switches.
    Demands on the equipment:
    NAT
Some QoS (dont really know on what level of complexity its going to demand, proberbly very low, just some form of QoS)
    Firewall solution
Cost balancing or something between two Internet connections. So that traffic running on one can jump over i case of connection failing.
4 gigabit interfaces (RJ45 should work but if i can get better for reasonable price im going with it).
Hoping to get som input on this matter.
    Regards Tommy Svensson

    Tommy,
An ideal solution for what your looking for would be either the rv120, wrvs4400n, or Sa500 series router and possibly an SG300 series switch in layer 2 mode.  This will allow the router to cover the vlan setup and intervlan routing if need be.  The switch will allow you to configure qos and you can trust the qos coming into the router on the lan side.
The other option you could get gigibit router and put the sg300 series switch in layer 3 mode and let it handle the vlans and qos at that point.  The only thing about this setup, any router that is gigibit we have will be able to facilitate vlans and inter-vlan routing.
Hope this gave you some ideas as to designing the network.

  • Im looking for a message forwarding solution operating after sender specific rules

Hi - Im looking for a message forwarding app or solution somehow, that automatically will forward my messages (emails, texts, IM etc)  to my different apps, devices
and mailboxes - depending on who the sender is. Any ideas ?

    Hi,
From your description, this issue only occurs to one sender, messages from others can be forwarded normally. In your case, I recommend you verify if the message is set to "Do Not Forward" when this sender sends it.
Hope this can be helpful to you.

  • Looking for the right adobe solution

I'm looking for a solution I'm sure resides in the Adobe suite of products but am not sure of the best program(s) to use. I want to create a cross platform GUI menu for content CDs. The content is not active multimedia content, but mostly PDFs of print publications. Most users will be on Windows, but the result should, in good conscience, be cross platform. Since many of the users will be on computers that prohibit autorun (i.e., gov't), I want to also configure it to not leave the user in the lurch because they can't autorun. I hate it when that happens--staring at an explorer/finder window full of unintelligible files, not knowing where to start.
An interactive PDF, built in InDesign, with links established to source PDFs in a designated folder? Any prospective user is going to have Acrobat, if only Reader. I'm a print designer and when I step off into the multimedia, interactive thing, I lose my bearings. There are so many great tools in Adobe, I want to go down the right trail and not off a cliff.
    Thanks.

Thanks. I will look into that. In fact, my portfolio is an interactive PDF. Wth the increased interactive components in CS5, I thought there MUST be an Adobe solution. I supposed one might be able to create links from a menu design to the many PDF-publications in a folder like a TOC link would do. The folks, very nice I might add, who work in IT where I work are on the Windows/Sharepoint kool-aid diet. I do not think they see Adobe as a solution for ANYTHING. All I want to do is help produce a functional, professional product. I not sure it's necessary to the Encore-level product, especially if the content is not active DVD content.
Thanks very much. I really appreciate your response.

  • Looking for Apple Mail hosting solution ...

    All,
Not sure if this is the best place to post this, but I am looking for a good e-mail hosting company that knows how to deal with Mac users. I have a small consultancy with 5 people and we all use Mac's. I guess anyone can offer standards-based IMAP hosting, but a bonus would be to have a hosting company that could handle WebDav iCal calendar syncing.
Some have suggested MobileMe, but I don't thing that works for small businesses ... right?
    Other suggestions?

  • Looking For Affordable External Storage Array

    Hi All,
I'm playing around with the idea of adding a ton of storage to our G4 Powermac running 10.4.x Tiger Server and the xServe RAID seems like a really attractive option but the current price seems a little high for our smaller operation.
I'm wondering if there are any sys admins out there that have successfully got an external RAID (from another vendor) running RAID 5 working with their OS X Server systems on the cheap? Let's say $2k - $4500 for 3TB+? Am I crazy?

How much disk storage do you need for your applications? 3TB? That's three or four disk spindles. More, if you want RAID.
How much I/O bandwidth do you need?
    Connectivity?
The FC SAN storage provided by Xserve RAID is more expensive than a rack of SCSI disks and an UltraSCSI PCI controller, which is more expensive than a pile of USB disks, etc. Somewhere in there you'll find various network-attached storage (NAS) options. FC SAN is more flexible and expandable, and rather speedy.
If you're just looking to add a few terabytes to a single box, a FireWire or USB solution might work. There are some discussions here from recent times -- search for "Drobo" and you'll find one of my postings in the thread -- or you might look to stuff 2.4 TB into an Xserve, for instance, and retire your G4 as a server. Or configure an Xserve and a rack of SCSI disks, and off you go.
Low-end external storage boxes are running about US$1000 per terabyte, and less.
BTW: RAID-5 is comparatively hazardous due to its window of vulnerability during recovery (and a number of sites have encountered failures due to recovery-level I/O), and comparatively slow due to its massive I/O hit during recovery. Start here for some details on disk failures and pointers to technical papers from CMU and Google:
    http://64.223.189.234/node/353
    http://64.223.189.234/node/410
But allow us to start the discussion with an idea of how much storage you need for your applications, how fast does your I/O need to go, do you need multiple hosts? (And the old mantra -- cheap, fast or good: pick two -- holds with storage, too.)

  • Looking for a (better) import solution

    Hi All-
I have had aperture for a while now, but haven't actually gotten around to using it too much (I had hoped that my wife would adapt, but hasn't, she is still using iPhoto).
I was hoping that someone could recommend a method for importing that would fit my situation-
Here is what i would like to do (two computers in the mix here, my wife's iMac, in the kitchen, and my mac pro, in my home office)
Note that import will always be done on the imac (that's just how it is...)
When we put in the memory card, I want it to:
    1. import to a directory (this will most likely be a network drive, but that probably doesn't matter)
(here it would be nice if it were to store them in a nice date structure)
    2. Kick off the import to iPhoto
(I don't care if it just hands the process off to iPhoto- I just want an off-machine store of the un-altered images).
This would allow ME to import from the network drive the originals, and do with them as I need.
I would also like it to ignore the iPhones (it is ok if that still syncs JUST with iPhoto).
I think that I can figure out the rest.
    Thanks,
    -jamie

Given iPhoto and Aperture are scriptable, you might want to look into creating a little application with Automator that does this.

  • Looking for a Hi Res solution for viewing images and for capturing video

We are looking to complete some training videos that utilize a microscope, a Sony Firewire camera (1/3-inch Progressive Scan Color CCD 1024x768 Pixel Array). I want to capture the video on a macbook (imovie or FCE) and be able to make some training DVDs.
In addition, I need to purchase a monitor (cinema display??) that would allow people to view the manipulation from the microscope.
Whay type of setup am I looking at ? Will the Apple Cinema display work for this and give a hi res image on it?
I am not familar with the displays or the desired setup (the video out on the macbook be acceptable as the video comes in from the camera or does the camera go directly to the monitor?
ny insight would be appreciative. Thank you

    Hi jforsberg,
What we need to know is that microscope have a video out or practically you use the Sony to capture the video thru microscope using custom tripod or camera holder?
If using you Sony is the case, then you can use iMovie for that, and you can view it "live" while you capture (import) it by selecting the input menu to your sony like shown here by EZJIM:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1091996&tstart=25
And you can mirror the screen from macbook to bigger external screen using mini DVI adapter. There are three option mini dvi to vga, mini dvi to dvi, and mini dvi to video, and if you want to use apple cinema display I believe you have to buy the mini dvi to dvi.
And apple said that macbook can drive up to 23" cinema display with 1440 x 900 resolution, but other user on macbook forum reportedly can use with other bigger screen and bigger resolution as well.
Best way is you visit apple store and buy that adapter and have it tested with both 23" and 30" (I believe apple guy won't mind considering you are a potential cinema display buyer).
    Good Luck.
