Looking for good firewall/router solution

Hi.
Im setting up a network and im wondering wich type of device i should use. The question is if i should use a firewall and a layer 3 switch for inter VLAN routing or if i should use a router solution with built-in firewall (like zone-based) and just layer 2 switches.
Demands on the equipment:
NAT
Some QoS (dont really know on what level of complexity its going to demand, proberbly very low, just some form of QoS)
Firewall solution
Cost balancing or something between two Internet connections. So that traffic running on one can jump over i case of connection failing.
4 gigabit interfaces (RJ45 should work but if i can get better for reasonable price im going with it).
Hoping to get som input on this matter.
Regards Tommy Svensson

Tommy,
An ideal solution for what your looking for would be either the rv120, wrvs4400n, or Sa500 series router and possibly an SG300 series switch in layer 2 mode.  This will allow the router to cover the vlan setup and intervlan routing if need be.  The switch will allow you to configure qos and you can trust the qos coming into the router on the lan side.
The other option you could get gigibit router and put the sg300 series switch in layer 3 mode and let it handle the vlans and qos at that point.  The only thing about this setup, any router that is gigibit we have will be able to facilitate vlans and inter-vlan routing.
Hope this gave you some ideas as to designing the network.

  • Looking for good orchestra plugins

    Hi,
I am looking for good classical orchestra plugins (violins cellos etc...)
    What are your suggestions ?
    thanks

As soon as iS sees this, he'll chime in with his
    faves...;)
    My ears were burning.
I use bits and pieces from many different libraries. For me, there's no one library that has all the right textures, articulations, etc. for any one instrument.
I recently purchased the Kirk Hunter EXS24 library. Most of the brass, strings, and woodwinds are superb. The caveat here is that almost all samples were recorded in some kind of hall or soundstage, so as with other libraries that were sampled with ambience, it can sometimes be problematic if you're going after a dryer sound. Depending on the sound, careful tweaking of the release time can minimize that effect.
So yes, I endorse Kirk Hunter. Bang-for-buck quotient is great ($325).
GPO -- I use their woodwinds and harp, the occasional solo string sound, percussion (the xylophone and celeste are wonderful). But the strings are pathetic and the brass poor. Still, for $250 it's an astounding deal, and worth it for the woodwinds/harp alone. It's paid for itself 50x over.
A favorite for strings are Sonic Implants. My copy went through a Gigasampler -->EXS conversion and I love them to death.
EWQLSO are not a fave. I've heard good things about Gold though.
Vienna... I've never been impressed with any of their demos. Well crafted but flat and lifeless sounding. I think the fault is with the demos and not the actual samples. Anyway, a friend recently realized a part for me using some of their specialty brass sounds and it was exactly what the doctor ordered! One day I'll invest in VSL and add it to the arsenal.

  • Task Privileges for Existing Users - Looking for a global update solution

After some reading I understand that if you set the task privileges for the PUBLIC user in the Privileges section of Discoverer Administrator (10g), any new user created in the system will pick up the privileges you have assigned to the PUBLIC user.
I currently have 4000+ users who have access to Discoverer Plus and the ability to create/edit queries. I want to limit who can access Discoverer Plus functionality to approximately 150 users.
I have changed my PUBLIC user to NOT have privileges but this will only affect new users. Is there any way to restrict 4000+ users without having to go through each user individually and set the privileges.
I am looking for a global update solution. I am wondering if this can be done through the back-end.

    Hi Mezzobella
If you change the rights for the public user then other users, who have not been manually adjusted in any way, will automatically pick up the public rights. Therefore, if you have a lot of users that are not changing this means that at some point in their life you will have clicked OK or Apply on the screen with a user displayed. This now assigns the rights to that user as opposed to inheriting them from the public user.
What you are describing is the perfect reason why you should not administer Discoverer using user accounts but to use roles or responsibilities instead.
In your case you are now somewhat stuck. The programatic way to revoke these rights is to drop rows from the EUL5_ACCESS_PRIVS table but this could take longer than doing inside Discoverer. Basically, when a user has been granted privileges one row per privilege is inserted into this table. The column AP_EU_ID contains the ID of the user. The column GP_APP_ID is the one that tells you what privilege a user has. Here is a list of the privileges:
    1000 Desktop / Plus Privilege (U)
    1001 Create / Edit Query (U)
    1002 Item Drill (U)
    1003 Drill Out (U)
1004 Grant Workbook (aka Sharing) (U)
    1005 Collect Query Statistics (U)
    1006 Admin Privilege (A)
    1007 Set Privilege (A)
    1008 Create / Edit Business Area (A)
    1009 Format Business Area (A)
    1010 Create / Edit Summaries (A)
1011 Not used as far as can be determined
    1012 Schedule (U)
1013 User is never required to schedule workbooks (U)
1014 Save workbooks to database (U)
    1015 Managed scheduled workbooks (A)
1016 This is an apps mode EUL
1017 This is the user's assigned language
1018 User is allowed to change password
1019 to 1023 Not used as far as can be determined
    1024 Create Link (U)
    Note: A = Admin privilege, U = User privilege
Theoretically you could manually delete rows from this table and that will revoke the rights. In reality, Oracle do not like it when inexperienced users manually the EUL as you could corrupt it. Therefore, any manual updates must be done with utmost caution after making sure you back up or have a copy of the table you will be updating - just in case.
Try running this query to see the content:
    SELECT DECODE( AP_EU_ID, 104198, 'Viewer', 103697, 'Plus', 'Other' ) "Who" , AP_ID, AP_TYPE, AP_EU_ID, AP_PRIV_LEVEL, GP_APP_ID, GBA_BA_ID, GD_DOC_ID, AP_ELEMENT_STATE
    FROM EUL5_ACCESS_PRIVS
    Best wishes

  • Looking for a wireless router / accespoint with radio time restriction

I am looking for a wireless router / accespoint with a radio time restriction but didn't find any information about this option. Are there any routers with the option to turn off the wireless signal between a specific time?
The router will be used at a small office .
I hope you can tell me more.
    Cheers
    Michel

Well there is No router which linksys/cisco manufacture that can stop the wireless signals to be broadcast for a specific time..
However what you can do is you can get into the setup interface of the router and disable the SSID broadcast and that will stop the router to broadcast the wireless signals...and whenever you need to enable it you can just go back into the setup page of the router and enable the broadcast again.

  • Looking for the right adobe solution

I'm looking for a solution I'm sure resides in the Adobe suite of products but am not sure of the best program(s) to use. I want to create a cross platform GUI menu for content CDs. The content is not active multimedia content, but mostly PDFs of print publications. Most users will be on Windows, but the result should, in good conscience, be cross platform. Since many of the users will be on computers that prohibit autorun (i.e., gov't), I want to also configure it to not leave the user in the lurch because they can't autorun. I hate it when that happens--staring at an explorer/finder window full of unintelligible files, not knowing where to start.
An interactive PDF, built in InDesign, with links established to source PDFs in a designated folder? Any prospective user is going to have Acrobat, if only Reader. I'm a print designer and when I step off into the multimedia, interactive thing, I lose my bearings. There are so many great tools in Adobe, I want to go down the right trail and not off a cliff.
    Thanks.

Thanks. I will look into that. In fact, my portfolio is an interactive PDF. Wth the increased interactive components in CS5, I thought there MUST be an Adobe solution. I supposed one might be able to create links from a menu design to the many PDF-publications in a folder like a TOC link would do. The folks, very nice I might add, who work in IT where I work are on the Windows/Sharepoint kool-aid diet. I do not think they see Adobe as a solution for ANYTHING. All I want to do is help produce a functional, professional product. I not sure it's necessary to the Encore-level product, especially if the content is not active DVD content.
Thanks very much. I really appreciate your response.

  • Looking for an Audio Server Solution

Alright, so I've got a headless server running in my bedroom that I use for storage.  I already stream media to my ps3 using ps3mediaserver, but what I'd really like to be able to do is play music remotely from my desktop and laptop.  I've spent some time looking around for solutions, but can't really come up with anything.  As such, I'm looking for some help!
    What I'd like to do:
    * Keep all music stored on the server
    * Access the music remotely in a nice gui interface (Rhythmbox would be ideal, but something similar would work too)
    * Play the music out of my desktop or laptop's speakers, not out of the server
I played around with mpd some, but ultimately gave up.  I could get it to stream with http, but I was having to stream it to vlc and control it with another program... Not the best solution.
Any ideas?  All help is greatly appreciated

  • Looking for good easy to use inexpensive tuner

    Hi,
I am looking for a good, easy to use, inexpensive tuner. Not one you use in a rack or on a pedal, but one you use on the computer. I looked and there are a ton out there so I figured I would look for recommendations here.
I do not like the way GBs works. It fluctuates too much as the note decays and drives me nuts. I want a simple one, that works great. (If it has a feature that helps in tuning a 12 string, than thats a plus, but not a deal breaker). Simple and accurate is most important.
Lastly I noticed some they sell are AU and some are stand alone. Is one better than the other?
    Thanks,
    Paul

    Strangedogs,
Thanks for the link but if you read the review of it on the site, it is terrible. The users on VT hated it. It got 1 star out of 5. I was looking for a recommendation of one that someone has actually "used" themselves and likes it from experience using it.
There was a link that someone posted there for a free tuner from emagic that they said is great, but all the links I found with google run to a dead end unfortunately.
    Paul
BTW: boy do those 12 strings take forever to tune. I was jamming with a friend over new years weekend and it took him forever to tune up, (and he has an excellent ear).

  • Looking for Good Article/Explanation on Timezones

    Hi,
I'm looking for answers about timezones and if anyone could point me to a really good artilce I'd appreciate it. Here's the type of thing I'm looking for...
I'm writing an application that creates records in a file. The records are timestamped as to their creation. The catch is that the timestamp may not be the default timezone depending on the user's preference. I know the user's UTC offset and whether they use daylight saving time. The problem comes in when trying to figure out which timezone id to use to create the new timezone and set it in the calendar object. For example, if I know that the GMT offset is -7*60*60*1000, I get back 7 possible ids. I don't know anything about the rules for daylight saving time for the user, only if they use it or not. How do I know which id to choose? The users can be from anywhere in the world.
    Thanks for any help.

Yes, I'd thought about just having the user set their
timezone (similar to the forum Settings). However,
even this forum settings causes some confusion.
There's two options for a number of timezones. What
differentiates them? The daylight saving rules are
important to know and the list of timezones doesn't
indicate this in any way. This list doesn't show all
available timezones either (as previously mentionted,
there's seven timezones for GMT -0700).Then you would have to do a better job than Sun did, wouldn't you? After all if you are going to be interpreting the answer you get, you had better ask a clear question. If you want to know the list of timezones actually supported by Java, then examine the source code for the TimeZone class. You can also search Google for "time zones" for links that will keep you busy for weeks learning the arcana of time zones around the world.

  • Looking for good headphones...

OK, I'm looking for a new pair of good headphones. For a few years, I've used Sony's. I like them, but I have one problem: durability. All of them have gone dead in a year or two. To be honest, I may be considered to be abusing them - They've all been earbuds, and I have a tendency to just dump them in my pocket. I bought a pair of $50 ones at the store about six months ago, and they work fine, but I've just noticed that the wire is exposed in one area, which generally means that they're gonna die soon. A case came with them, that was good, but it broke after a month or so.
I guess what I'm looking for is this:
    - A pair of earbuds
    - Good sound quality (doesn't have to be noise reduction, in fact, I might prefer they weren't, because I generally need to be able to hear what's going on around me)
    - durability
    - different size 'buds' (My ears are pretty small; the normal ones that came with the iPod were too big, they won't stay in, and all other one-size-fits-all type buds pose the same problem)
    - $100 or less
    - a durable, easy to use case (that I won't just ditch because there's too much work getting them in and out)
I was looking around and found that I really like the Panasonic RP-HJE70-S, they're around $100 and come with a case. They seem to be good, and the few reviews I've found like them. But they're fairly new, and there isn't much word out there yet. I also wanted to get some opinions first.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
I splurged recently on a pair of Audio Technica ATH M50's which were very expensive.
They sound wonderful and are 8 out of 10 comfortable when using them for hours. They're really good for tracking but I have found them to be highly inaccurate/coloured for mixing.
I don't know if this is important to you, but I've been unpleasantly surprised that most headphones seem to have the cable hard wired to the enclosure.
My fantastic Beyer Dynamic DT 150's (which are now 20 years old but not so good for tracking or mixing) have a hard plastic tab at the end of the cable that plugs into the headphones, and this tab has several, 'male' D.I.N. like pins (except in a rectangular formation) which plug into their female counterparts in the enclosure. This means that if the cable ever breaks (which, ironically, it hasn't because it is very durable) you can just buy another one and plug it in.
I wonder if there are other elements of design that are important to you or others.
Let us know what you choose, and you might want to check out the other sites too, homerecording.com, macrumors.com, audiorecording - I'm sure you're familiar with a lot of these.
    Good luck

Basically any wireless router meets this description.  A main computer is only required for initial setup and configuration.
I'm assuming you have wired cable or DSL service - most routers don't do dialup, and sharing dialup like this would be painful.
You do need a cable/DSL modem that has an Ethernet port - unfortunately some only have USB ports.
