Looking for help on what Hardware to use for FCS

I am looking to set up a shared storage for use in a small editing network and I am having a hard time getting my head around what exactly I need.
I have 4 edit stations that currently run externals. I am looking at a solution like FCS to centralize all the captures and media to edit from. We usually edit Apple Pro res and DV footage.
My understanding is that we need to connect to the storage using Fibre to get the bandwidth needed. My issue is wondering exactly how much hardware I need to get this done and what the layout of this hardware should be.
I currently have a Mac Pro that could be dedicated as the server running FCS. I plan on buying a Fibre connected storage RAID and outfitting the 4 Mac Pros in the office with Fibre cards. I am guessing I need to connect all of this with a Fibre switch. Is this all I would need? Would I be able to capture and edit off of the RAID using this configuration? What else would I need?
I have been looking for diagrams or some type of examples of configurations people have use and not been able to find much. Any advice would be great
Thanks

XServe, Promise RAID, QLogic Sanbox 20 port fiber switch, XSAN software, 5 Mac Pro Fiber cards.
That's pretty good, assuming you have the numbers right. You need Xsan software and a Fibre Channel card for every computer connecting via FC (the Xserves and Mac Pros). Note that the 20 port switch has 16 usable ports, and each storage or computing device should connect to two ports, so you've basically filled it up with what you've listed.
I also have an XServe that is on the (10 GB ethernet) network (in another building on campus) that is currently being used as a login/account manager (could it be used for metadata as well?).
It would be good to use this as the failover MDC to support the one you are purchasing. Can you relocate it so it is physically closer? It should be Intel. It is not recommended to have the primary MDC perform directory or other services, but some people do this (at a slight risk) on a secondary server.
Will I need to reduce one of the Mac Pro editors to merely a metadata controller (leaving me with 4 editors)?
Not recommended, except maybe as a backup.
Can I use the existing network for the LAN and METADATA Switches?
You'll need a separate network for metadata traffic. This can be physical or virtual (on higher-end switches).
@trezero-your list is the first I've seen with 3 XServes. Is this just because of FCServer? Can you not use the MDC or one of the networked editors?
FCServer warrants its own machine since it is fairly CPU intensive, especially if you are doing transcoding on it. In high performance environments people will add a second machine just to do rendering.
Don't put any other server process on the MDC. You could use the backup MDC for FCSvr, but this isn't recommended since if it gets failed over to, then it is no longer the backup, and you're again risking your Xsan integrity on a shared system. In an educational lab setup where the risk of downtime is not an inconvenience, you could probably get away with it.
You would probably benefit from either taking the Xsan class or working with a professional systems integrator. I'm based in the Southeast and can refer you to a few people if you contact me offline.

  • Need Help..what should i use for this

    hello friends, i have to write a program which will load an xml file reader class at run time and depending on the content of xml file i'm going to generate mapping.. e.g xml file- <MyMapping> <ATO> <security type=int> </ATO> <FIX> <symbol type=String> </FIX> </MyMapping> Now i want to change the content of xml file without restarting my running application..changes should be reflected at runtime... also my xml file will contain nearly 1000 lines..so in this case which technique should i use whether i use JAXB which will give the classes of my xml file or any other ?? Also if i use JAXB whether JAXB gives classes corrsponding to my xml nodes (e.g ATO.java as per above example).

    hi ,
    here is my question again..my xml will have
    <Message>
    <ATO>
    <somefiled="X" type=int value=35 />
    </ATO>
    <FIX>
    <somefiled="Y" type=String value=50 />
    <FIX>
    </Message>
    Now first i have to parse this xml ..then my java program is going to accept value from user ..and depending on user specified value i've to use either ATO or FIX fields...e.g if user value is 35 then my program should use fields within ATO node.
    You will read the XML structure into some kind of memory model. When the user supplies a value you will search for a matching value (likely from a collection such as a map or list) and return the value in that object that you locate.
    what should be done for this ..
    See above.
    and what if i change values in my xml file..will i have to restart my application to load xml again ?
    If you change the file on the filesystem, you should simply be able to re-parse the XML file and update your in-memory model. If you instead update your in memory-model, you can serialize the model back to XML on the filesystem. Neither needs to necessarily have anything to do with application start-up (other than the fact that you would normally read in the XML model then, but updating is a separate concern, as would re-reading it).

  • What is a cache monitoring? and what it is used for?

    what is a cache monitoring? and what it is used for? how safe it is to execute the transaction RSRCACHE in development?
    Thank you,
    York

    Hi Les,
    Cache is a temporary storage for recently accessed data.
    Used to enhance query performance.
    Use t-code RSRT to view more on cache.
    Please see this link:
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/41/b987eb1443534ba78a793f4beed9d5/content.htm
    Cache helps to improve query performance. As it can save data in memory, flatfile, cluster table or BLOB.
    You can remove cache per query or inactivate it for perticular info provider or inactivate it overall.
    But which is not recommended. Yes if u know that certain queries you dont use often and its not accessing large number of records then you can inactivate it for those queries. you can manage cache via three t-codes RSRT or RSRCACHE or SPRO>SAP Reference IMG>SAP Busines Wearhouse--> Reporting relevent setting -->General Reporting Setting in BEX -->Global Cache Setting.
    please follow the link which has few good documents on cache. which will clear your complete concept for cache.
    https://service.sap.com/bi -->Product information previous releases -->BI InfoIndex --> OLAP --> you will get bunch of documents in that.
    Look at the following threads :
    OLAP Cache
    what is cache?
    also check RSRT and OLAP cahce docs

  • Does anyone know what ppqryErrorList is used for in EssOtlQueryMembersEx?

    Given a calcscript, I'm wondering if I can get a list of errors back it has multiple errors (e.g. member not found, syntax error etc.) when I run EssOtlQueryMembersEx.
    I've looked at the documentation (http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E10530_01/doc/epm.931/html_esb_api/api_c/otlc/funcs/apcfqmex.htm) and looks like ppqryErrorList does the job for me. However, I'm getting a NULL pointer to ppqryErrorList regardless or whethere there's an error or not.
    e.g. when I call "@ICHILD(blah)" with EssOtlQueryMembersEx I'm hoping the error list (ppqryErrorList) will contain "member not found blah" but it infact returns NULL.
    This parameter on EssOtlQueryMembersEx must be there for a reason. Does anyone know what this is used for?
    Btw, I'm using Essbase 7

  • What are state objects, and what are they used for ?

    tried to find some information in the documentation and internet. but i couldn't find a good explanation with an example what that is and what it is used for.
    thanks for any good answer !

    Wrapper classes are used to enclose primitive data
    types so that they can be used in instances where an
    object is required. For example, if you want to add an
    integer to an ArrayList, you can't use this:java.util.List al = new ArrayList();
    int i=123;
    al.add(i);because the ArrayList expects data of type object. In
    order to all the integer to the ArrayList, you must wrap
    it in the Integer wrapper class. This works:java.util.List al = new ArrayList();
    int i=123;
    al.add(new Integer(i));Hope that helps.

  • What can be used for replacing SELECT SINGLE *   ?

    What can be used for replacing SELECT SINGLE *  for improving the performance in the following statements?
    SELECT SINGLE * FROM REGUV
       WHERE LAUFD = G_WLAUFD "RUN DATE ,SY-DATUM
         AND LAUFI = P_LAUFI.  "IDENTICATION NO
    SELECT SINGLE * FROM T100
       INTO CORRESPONDING FIELDS OF G_T100_WA
        WHERE SPRSL = G_T_IALLMESS-MSGSPRA
          AND ARBGB = G_T_IALLMESS-MSGID
          AND MSGNR = G_T_IALLMESS-MSGNR.
    SELECT SINGLE * FROM TBTCO
       INTO CORRESPONDING FIELDS OF TBTCO
        WHERE JOBNAME = FS_JOBNAME.

    If you need all the fields and you know that only one record exists then u need to use select single * only. You can improve the performance by specifying key fields in the where clause of select statements. If the structure of the work area or internal table in which you are fetching the data is same as that of the database table then no need to use corresponding fields clause.

  • What do you use for a To Do list?

    Curious to know what folks here use for a ToDo list. I'm seriously thinking of migrating from Outlook, which actually has a very good one. iCal's is okay, but it won't print out in the same order that it appears on the screen. (It's downright goofy to print out.)
    So I'm looking for alternatives.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance,

    What an interesting question. I have wondered this too. I have played with a few different ones. The one I have been trying for about a week is EasyTask (look it up on version tracker. Sorry, I do not know how to do links). You can use the demo indefinitely but you are limited to 15 tasks, I think it is about $20 to buy it. I like the way it allows me to sort and prioritize. It's based on Getting Things Done system.
    Another I have used is Check Off, which is very simple, but good. It is also freeware. Find it via VersionTracker too.
    I have also done a very simple template for myself just using Appleworks for printing out.
    A lot depends on what your individual needs are.

  • What are the uses for Macbook pro and Macbook air?

    Hi! I am deciding between MBA and MBP and need to know what the different uses for each one was. Like what would you use the MBA for and what would you use the MBP for?? All opinions welcome!!

    They're actually pretty comparible in what they can do if you're talking about the base model of both (say 13") with 4GB RAM. At that level, the Pro has the advantage if you're going to watch or burn DVD's or CD's, as the Air has no optical drive. But otherwise, they're pretty much the same--full-sized, backlit keyboard, camera, beautiful screen, etc. If you're going for more than a basic 13" Pro, then things start to change. For example, you can get up to 8GB RAM on the Pro, and a huge hard drive, you can also get a 15" or 17" size. You will be paying a lot for these, but, obviously, if you're going to be working on, say, making videos (which you may then want burn onto disk) the Pro is very much what you'll want.
    However, if you don't need or want any of that--if, for example, you plan to do the usual programs (word processing, games, web surfing, music, etc.), then you really won't see much difference between the two. At 4GB RAM and a 13" screen, the big difference is going to be thickness and weight, not power. And in this the Air will have the advantage--it's really amazingly slim, light and with a SSD, faster (you pay extra--a lot extra--to get SSD on the Pro).
    Just to make the point, I switched from a 13" Pro to an 11" Air. My hard drive size is half what it was with a Pro, but I was barely taking up half of that amount on the Pro, and so have plenty of room on my 128GB Air (you can get 256GB for the 11" if you order it online). Absolutely everything my Pro did, my Air does (sans optical drive), only faster and lighter and more compact--meaning it takes up less table space, slips in and out of my bag faster, balances on my lap easier, etc. But there was no interruption of service--I switched pretyt seamlessly from 13" Pro to 11" Air.
    The Pro offers you more options for power, screen size, HD size and optical drive. But it's really pretty surprising how few of us need that much power, that much room, or the optical drive. It's very freeing to realize that less can be more than enough.

    ... What is the use for creating view?
    A: First Data Integrity, Selecting Particular Columns..Most views are created and used for convenience. A view is a saved query. If the same operations are often done, then it can be very convenient to code those operations once, in a view, and refer to the view rather than explicitly doing those operations.
    Sometimes, views are created and used for security reasons. For example, you many want to allow some users to see only certain rows or certain columns of a table.

    A: As per oracle manual I read that its a referential integrity check through views.The reason is integrity, not necessarily referential integrity. The CHECK option applies only when DML is done through the view. It prohibits certain changes. For example, if a user can't see certain rows through a view, the CHECK option keeps the user from creating such rows.
