Looking for laptop bag with side pocket for bottled water

I will be traveling via plane to the west coast next month and would like to put my 15" MBP in a backpack. I would like said backpack to have at least one side pocket for a water bottle. Anybody have one that they can recommend? Thanks, Judy

The implication is that you want to take a water bottle on to the plane. If that is the case, then you need to read this.

Looking for a new notebook.  I work in finance and travel.  Is the Mac Pro with Retina worth the extra weight or should I go with a Air book?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The MacBook Pro with Retina display is worth, but it's limited. Note that you can't upgrade anything after buying it without voiding the warranty. The same happens with the MacBook Air.
Simply, if you have to run heavy applications, buy the MacBook Pro with Retina display. If not, buy the MacBook Air

  • I'm looking for a case/bag for the new MacBook Pro with Retina Display - any suggestions?

As the title says, I'm looking for a case or bag for the new MBP w/ Retina Display. I'd prefer either a sleeve or a backpack designed for it - not having any luck finding sleeves that are made for the MBP w/ Retina Display, and I'm thinking the ones for the other 15" MBP will be a little too big. Any suggestions?

    Look at these, very cool.

  • I need help! I bought an external drive to backup the computer. but although the computer recognizes it (shows up on the right side with the icon - mybook3.0 - I cannot get time machine to look for a hard disc - it only wants to use airport!

I want to use time machine. So, I got a mybook3.0 and hooked it up. the computer recognizes it fine (shows the icon on the desktop etc) but time machine refuses to look for any hard disk, going on airport instead and refusing to let me select anything or do anything manually (buttons are not clickable - and anyway, no HD at all shows)
    I'm getting frustrated!!
    PLEASE HELP

Just to clarify - when you run Disk Utility (in your Utilities folder) the drive you bought doesn't show up in the window under your boot drive?
If it appears on your desktop, you should see it in the Disk Utility window as this displays all mounted drives.
You then click on the drive (Mybook3.0 or whatever it appears as), and choose Erase from the options on the right.
    Best Wishes.

  • New Mac user looking for help with Finder, Preview, Keyboard, & Dock

So about a month ago I switched over from a lifelong Windows user to a brand new MacBook Pro, and while I am adjusting pretty well, there are still some things that I haven't quite figured out.
First up on the list is Finder! I like my files to be arranged just like how they are in Windows Explorer--folders first alphabetically, then files alphabetically. I've managed to acquire this setting by messing around with the "clean up by" and "arrange by" functions but I don't really know the specific combination. Most of the time these preferences are saved and set as the defaults under "View Options" but every once in a while it resets and I have to tinker around with the settings all over again. Does anyone know of a way to fix this? It's only happened twice so far, but I'd rather not have it happen again. Also, occasionally when I delete an item, there is a blank space left where the icon was instead of all the files following it bumping up a space. Any quick fixes for this bug?
Next up is Preview. Again, I like the Windows Way and I like to be able to browse between the files in a folder while using Preview/Windows Photo Viewer. I know that there is a way to browse between files if you select the whole folder and stick it in Preview, but is there a way to achieve the same result without having to do that? An app or "extension" of some sort that adds arrows in to browse between photos? I've had no luck finding anything other than the aforementioned option. Is there a good free alternative to Preview that will function similarly with the browse between photos option?
One of my favorite things about my new Mac is the backlit keyboard function. My old laptop didn't have it and as someone who is online more often at night it is super helpful. But is there a way to turn it off during the day/in bright settings? A way to put it on a timer? In System Preferences I selected the option "Adjust keyboard brightness in low light", which I assumed to mean would have the keyboard NOT very bright when there IS light, but it continues to light up just the same. Any apps or extensions to help with this one?
And finally, the dock! This question is more about aesthetics than functionality but help is appreciated all the same. Currently, my dock looks like this: http://i42.tinypic.com/35ktxlz.png It is rather opaque and the indicator lights can barely be seen. However, in a lot of tutorial videos I've been watching, many people have docks that look like this: http://i.i.cbsi.com/cnwk.1d/i/tim/2011/07/19/Lion_LaunchPad.png It is a darker shade of gray, the divider is dashed rather than a straight line, and the indicator lights are clearly visible. Does anybody know how to get this look for the dock? I've looked in the dock preferences but there's not really anything in there other than magnification/size/effects.
That about sums things up! I'm sorry if any of these seem like "silly" questions but they are all things I have been unable to find answers for. Any and all tips, tricks, and help is appreciated! Thanks in advance for all your help!!

congratulations on coming over from the dark side.
Seems like you are interested in column view, which would show you the hierarchy of folders and files:  Column View in Mac OS X Mountain Lion - For Dummies Not sure what's going on if your finder settings don't stay put. May be a corrupted preferences file, which is easy to fix, but is perhaps a topic for another discussion.
What I'd suggest is to have an open mind and try to see what the mac can do, rather than force it to look like your windows machine. I mean, if you just want it to look like windows, then why bother switching? If you give it a little time, you'll start to appreciate the mac way of doing things, and see how it is infinitely more awesome, powerful, creative, intuitive, and better designed (and the software way better written)  than what you left behind. But that's your call.
There are some threads on this forum with complaints about the backlight. Keyboard backlight settings query...: Apple Support Communities  Evidently it depends on the angle of the screen and the light sensor relative to the light. Some suggest that a SMC reset may help: Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)  This is not an issue for me, I just adjust the brightness with the keyboard buttons if I want. Real men shift their own gears, drink their coffee black, and adjust their own keyboard brightness. I am not aware of any software to exert more control over this feature but a search of macupdate  Download Apple Mac Software & iPhone Software : MacUpdate may help. I mean, it's up to you what is important. I can waste a lot of time playing around with the GUI and with unnecessary software, or I can just get my work (and play) done.
You might prefer the no-glass dock, that removes the shelf, and makes the indicator lights like more discrete orbs. You can do this with the terminal. Using the terminal is also, perhaps, a topic for another discussion.I like the 2D dock much better. If you want I'll give you some directions for how to do it. Otherwise, here's a reference: 2D Dock - MacRumors Forums

  • Looking for note taking software to use with a graphics tablet

    Hello folks,
I am trying to find a software that would allow me to interchangably use typing and writing/drawing on a graphics tablet smoothly.
I'm looking for something that would essentially provide a 'blank sheet of lined-paper' where i can quickly type what my professors are saying, as well as easily draw whatever they are drawing. Also, since I am studying engineering, I would need something that I can easily write math symbols and equations so I can use it as scratch paper.
At the same time, I am looking to save trees and money, as well as keep organized and simplicity when it comes to archiving.
I have tried Microsoft Word 2008's notebook view, and this is currently the closest thing to what I want, but it favors mostly the text side of what I want (of course), and isn't very good in the drawing part. It also isn't very smooth when I try to do practice math/physics/engineering problems on it, nor is it very good at drawing molecular structures (O-Chem)... but for the most part, it gets the job done. It is also a headache because when you zoom in a lot to make it easier to write (mind you, I am using a tiny macbook screen..), the title bar also zooms in, and ends up taking half of the screen, making zooming in practically useless. (the title bar is also locked, so even as you scroll down, it stays in the top half.)
I have also tried Adobe Acrobat Professional 7, where I simply made a blank notebook from some image online, and I use it as scratch paper. When it comes to drawing, it is very smooth, but it's a headache sometimes, because after writing something and pausing for a second or two, the pen tool automatically becomes a 'selector' tool, and so if i want to draw over what I previously wrote, it changes to selector and instead of writing over, it drags and drops the object around a bit. The tolerance for that is really high too, and i'd have to bring the pointer about half an inch or so before I can start writing something again. I also haven't given the text a try yet, but it lets me make collapseable text boxes, so that is good for further annotating my equations and drawings, but isn't very useful for a full-lecture class (i.e. biology)
I also don't even want to consider photoshop, because it's basically too powerful, and I don't want my laptop fans going off in-class (its SUPER loud when it happens...) and I need it to last the day.
    So just a sum up:
I'm looking for a good note-taking software (for mac) that will allow me to smoothly use my graphics tablet AND be able to type.
MS Word '08 and Adobe Acrobat are close... but aren't quite to what I want exactly...
I have a Wacom Bamboo tablet and an '09 Intel-based MacBook.
    Thank you in advance!

I have had this same issue and found this program called NoteBook that allows you to type, and draw (write) notes on a variety of paper types, (lined, graphing, engineering, etc.) and it uses the .nb file type that allows you to save multiple "pages" inside one file in a sort-of "notebook" if you will. It works great, but has several minor disadvantages. I can't change the ink color, I can't change the tip thickness (other than the pressure sensitive option with my wacom graphics tablet), and it doesn't allow you to open pdfs or other documents to inscribe upon. All around though it has been wonderful. There are really no good note taking apps out there...

  • Looking for a laptop

I am looking for a laptop which I can use in the studio or at my parent's holiday house. At the moment, I have to use 2 computers, a Power Mac G5 1.6 GHZ system for audio and MIDI sequencing, etc. and a PC for adding lyrics to melody lines in Sonar for backing tracks which I program for a local midifile company. I switch between the two with a KVM switch.
I have been quite interested in the new Intel laptops. Are they a lot quicker than my G5 for doing what I want to do? Could I sell my current G5 1.6 GHZ and get a laptop? Will my Emagic MT4 interface work on both OSX and Windows?
I have an internal drive on my G5 for audio purposes. Could I take that out and put that into an e-SATA enclosure and use an e-SATA Express card on my laptop so that I can use a much faster internal drive than a Firewire?
Last question. (Sorry for this long post) Is there a carrying bag that I can use to carry a laptop, my Mobile I/O soundcard, hard drives and extra accessories, etc so that I can easily set up and disconnect with minimum fuss?

    hi,
any of the current intel mac laptops will completely toast your G5 1.6. they are all great machines for logic. as a rough guide, a core 2 duo 2.33 MBP can run at least the same number, if not slightly more plug ins than a dual processor or dual core G5 of the same clock speed. my C2D 2.33 MBP is clearly faster than my dual 2.0 Ghz G5.
I personally went for a MBP 17" because I wanted the biggest display size I could get without having to depend on an additional monitor to feel comfortable working with logic. I have not regretted that decision at all.
as for your drive going into an e-sata box.. I can't really say, although I don't see why it wouldn't be possible. still, unless you have very heavy track count requirements, FW would be more than adequate and a little less fuss. but, another advantage to going the e-sata route is that you totally leave your FW bandwidth free, so you won't be running into trouble if you have a FW audio interface that needs lots of bandwidth for lots of channels. or, if you wanted to use something like a liquid mix. btw, don't forget that these days, you'll actually get pretty extraordinary performance from the internal laptop drive (at least compared to the old days when it was not even an option), but this is still not the most recommended way to work.
as far as a carrying solution goes.. well, oddly enough I've been looking into the very same thing myself. I found a company called gigskinz that make bags for all sorts of musical instruments, small portable producer setups, DJs and the like. there are ones that have a laptop sleeve, extra storage for mics and other assorted gear. actually, the one that I saw that looked most usable for me on their site was a DJ/producer bag. it has the laptop sleeve, and then larger compartments for records and CDs, but I would use them for other gear. it is also fitted with wheels and a long handle so you can carry it like luggage if it gets too heavy. they all have padding and fluffy stuff inside to keep things from scratching. it looks pretty good. the thing is, I just happen to be in australia myself also (for family reasons) and I couldn't find a distributor for gigskinz in australia. I emailed them and got no response at all.. my cousin in LA is going to go check them out for me, but I may well pick one up next time I'm in LA or when I'm back in paris as I'm a little worried about getting the wrong thing if I don't see it first.
but hey, if you do some research yourself, I'd love to hear of any other options you come up with. FYI, I'd need to carry a MBP 17", a rode NTK mic and powersupply, a mindprint trio interface, a couple of lacie FW drives (including the double size 500GB one), and then a wireless keyboard mouse and other various little things, plus cables of course.
actually it might be a good idea to start a thread on this.. there have to be some users out there that have found the killer solution for transporting a portable logic rig.

  • Luddite looking for laptop

Ok so I will get right down to it.  I know next to nothing about computers but unfortuantly have broken my old laptop so I am in the market for a new one.  With tech changing at such a rapid pace I am completly lost, and on top of all of that I live in an extreamly remote part of northern MN so actualy going into a best buy and talking with a sales rep would entail at least six hours of driving.  I am hoping any of you tech savy web crawlers out there who read this can help guide me in the right direction as far as my purchase decision is concerned.  I am looking for a laptop with good media and gaming capacity.  It is going to be used primarily for entertainment and a bit of web surfing.  Also I would like something with a larger screen and none of this new fangled 3D capability stuff I've seen about.  I do enjoy older computer games as well as some of the newer ones and I had problems with my old (2004 dell) playing older games built for windows 98 as well as newer games that were beyond the machiens capabilities such as Sid meyers Civilization 4 and 5.  If anyone out there can lend a hand and shoot me some sugjestions I would greatly appreciate it.

Normally, these boards can handle questions like this. However, if you would like a 'face to face' interaction (so to speak) where you can weigh options, try 1-888-BEST-BUY. A friendly sales associate familar with the laptop and desktop line can lead you through the advantages and disadvantages of each system, as well as explain current promotions and delivery dates.
The HP Envy is a great machine, by the way. I love the speaker system it has included - one of the best you can get on a laptop today! However, you may also choose to look at Alienware or other similar system to suit your needs. If you prefer to remain on these boards, please specify an approximate budget you'd be willing to pay for this type of system. For your needs, I'd recommend a budget of around $1000 to $1400. However, you can definitely get away with a lower cost with a few sacrifies, which can be explained to you.
I am a Bestbuy employee who volunteers on these boards on my own time. I am not paid for posting here, and you should understand that my opinions are exactly that - opinions. I do not represent Bestbuy in any way.

  • Leather Laptop Bag for MacBook Pro.

I am hoping this is the right place to post this, we recently gave our head of technology a new 13" MacBook Pro, which he loves.
The only problem is all our laptop bags at work are for 15" HP ProBook's and the MacBook Pro is very loose in the bag we use as it is too big for the laptop, causing it to slide around.
Our head of technology has asked for a new laptop bag to fit the MacBook Pro, he only had one request which was a smart leather laptop bag that fits the MacBook Pro 13" nicely, with a bit space to put the odd document.
I have looked on the Apple store website but could only really find laptop sleeves not bags.
I am curious to know what other MacBook Pro users would recommend?
In terms of cost, we recently saved a lot of money on two projects we were running, and we have to use up funds quick before next years funds are released, to us.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Question about measurments of MPB, looking for a new crumpler bag

Hi all. I'm about to order a Macbook Pro 15" 2.66 and I need a nice bag to go with it but I'm a bit confused about which bags will fit.
Firstly the apple website gives the measurements of the MBP as Height: 0.95 inch (2.41 cm) Width: 14.35 inches (36.4 cm) Depth: 9.82 inches (24.9 cm) and I assume this to be correct.
Then I looked at this bag which it says is custom made for the MBP 15" http://store.apple.com/uk/product/TR747ZM/A?n=macbookpro15&fnode=MTY1NDA2Ng&mco= ODE4MDUyMQ&s=topSellers
However this gives the overall measurments of the bag as: 28cm x16cm x3cm and 21cm x15cm
So how can the bag be smaller than the MBP?!
The bag I really like is this one: http://crumpler.co.uk/?product=CheesyDisco_&colour=Black/Blue_Black&page=details&productid=CHD-007&size=
    But this says: For 12", 13", 14", 15"W and most 15" laptops. (up to 27 x 34 x 4,5 cm)
Again this would indicate that the MPB 15" wouldn't actually fit even though it says all 15"w laptops!?
Can anyone help me here? I really want a decent crumpler bag does anyone know one that will DEFINITELY fit my chosen macbook nicely?

I would suggest you look at http://www.dpreview.com and also try some camera / photographic forums. This forum is really for the discussion of Aperture Software Installation, Setup and General Usage.

I'm looking for some help connecting linksys IP Cameras to my home network to monitor my property when I'm travelling.  I used to do this with linksys WAPS, but since I've discarded all my old linksys networking and standardized on airport, I can't get these things working.  I know that I have to identify my camera through the DHCP table and set up port forwarding and there is the problem.
My network consists of 4  base stations set up in a roaming network - same network name and passwords.  I need to do it this way so I don't have to switch network when I move from one side of the house to the other, go to the cabana, or my shop in the barn.  The network works pretty well since I went to a roaming set up.  Good performance, yata, yata, yata.
However, the roaming network requires the AEBS's to be set up in bridge mode, rather than sharing an ip address.  When the AEBS is set to  bridge mode, you don't see a DCHP table or have the ability to identify your IP Cam through the AEBS - and hence, no port forwarding.
I am able to identify and set up my Linksys IP Cam by locating the ip address on my FIOS router, even though, it's plugged into an AEBS.  I set it up, see the video, remove the ethernet cable from the IP Cam, restart - and I can't get to it from an AEBS.  In researching this, it appears, I should be setting up the AEBS to "share an IP Address", going to the DHCP table and identifying the camera's IP address and setting up port forwarding.  However, you don't see any of the DHCP or port forwarding options in Airport Network Utility when configuring in bridge mode.
I'm hoping I'm missing something here and that the solution isn't to set it up at the FIOS router level, but I'm beginning to think that's my only hope.  What concerns me there is that I should be able to see the IP cam on the network without port forwarding since I'm not coming from outside, and I can't even do this unless it's connected hard wire.
I'd appreciate any insight into this that anyone might have.  I've hit the wall with what I know.
    Thanks.

In a roaming network, your "main" router is the device that would require port mapping/forwarding to be configured in order to access the IP camera from the Internet. This router is also the one that would be provide the private IP address for the camera which you will want to be a static one.
So as you described your network, the IP cameras should be getting an IP address or you assigned it a static one and this is the address that you would enter in the Private IP address (or equivalent depending on the router used) field when setting up port mapping.
If you are not able to access this camera from the local network, then this should be troubleshot first.

  • Looking for someone with ios developer account who can compile and test my app on ios 8

    Hi,
    my ios developer account expired.
Before I renew it i want to be sure that my app will still run on ios 8
It's a flex app , downloadable  on google code : Source Checkout - helpdiabetes-air - HelpDiabetes written for Adobe AIR - Google Project Hosting
So i'm looking for some one with flash builder installed, with the latest flex sdk (4.13) , an ios developer account and a device with ios 8, who wants to build and install the app for me.
    See if it runs.
    thanks,

I have to say this is the hardest thing to diagnose that I have come up against over the past 10 years! Completely out of ideas.
If this was just the Intuos3 with the mouse on my G5 then I would just say it is a bad mouse switch, but when a different mouse on two different tablets (Intuos 2 and Intuos3) are both exhibiting the same behavior on two different computers (a G4 Laptop and a G5 Tower) - then something is wrong.
The only other thing I have done to both computers recently is I installed Adobe CS3. Have any of you that have responded also installed CS3?
This is not a Wacom Driver issue, because if you plug in a tablet without the Wacom Driver installed, the mouse should still work like a standard mouse and I am having trouble even then. Even during a restart of the computer as soon as the Wacom tablet blue light comes on - even before the desktop appears, if I hold down the mouse button the tablet will irratically flicker between blue (receiving power from USB) to green (mouse button engaged)? (Again it does not do this with the Pen - it always works fine - just any Wacom mouse).
If it were a USB power issue the tablet light would go off and on, but it doesn't - one of the LEDs is always lit. If it were a tablet grid issue, the Pen would also display the same symptoms - it doesn't. It acts like the mouse does not have enough "consistent power" output to keep the grid engaged when activated which would be easily explained by a bad mouse switch or for sure if the mouse had a bad battery, but I don't think the mouse has a battery does it? And none of this explains why I am getting this on two tablets with two mice (unless the mouse actually does have a battery and both are bad)?
Anyway I am 95% sure this is a communication problem between the mouse and the tablet - not the tablet and the computer and Driver is not in the equation.
    Really stumped.

  • Looking for a new budget laptop

Hi there, our laptop broke recently and we need to replace it. We have several tablets and will purchase a more expensive laptop for work purposes later on, so right now we just need something for the following purposes: Internet surfing with a number of browser windows open at the same time, Word and Excel, movie streaming, Skype and that's it. Nothing fancy or expensive - which I thought would make the choice easy, but it seems there's a ton of different models in the "budget laptop range. Many are really similar and I just can't get myself to pick at random. I'm getting tired of looking and comparing, so somebody please make the choice for me! This are the specs I've been using for my searches, but I'm open to suggestions if you think they should be different, based on what we'll be using the laptop for: - i5 processor - 4gb RAM - Windows 8 64-bit - screen size between 14 and 16 inches - webcam - bluetooth - HDMI output (husband likes to watch shows on big tv sometimes, but it's not really necessary) It seems there's a lot of different models with these specs. Maybe somebody knows more about screen resolution or graphics to narrow it down to the best choice. I was thinking to spend between $500 and $700 - we could spend more, but that seems overkill considering this will just be the everyday-throw-around-let-the-kids-play-with kind of laptop!? Thanks for your input!

In my opinion, pretty much all the machines in that price range(that have the specs you're looking for) are going to be pretty much the same when it comes to quality/durability.
I prefer the brand ASUS(and most of the other's on here will chime in to that effect). I'm very partial to them, and would toss this out as a recommendation : http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+K-Series+15.6%26%2334%3B+Laptop+-+4GB+Memory+-+500GB+Hard+Drive+-...
Thought it has Windows 7 on it, I can't say I consider that a bad thing.

  • Looking for a pager with advanced functionalities

    Hello everyone,
I am looking for a pager with which I could put custom icons for the different workspaces.
I have an HTPC that is mainly used for three things: watching movies, playing music and browsing the internet. Therefore, I would like to have four workspaces, one for each of these and another one for administration. Since this is an HTPC, I'd like it to look good and I think it would be neat to have images instead of numbers/squares for the workspaces: a movie reel for the "movies" workspace, a note for "music", etc... I have been looking at pagers on the wiki, but most of the links are broken. I am currently running XFCE, but would install another WM for this. The idea came to me because I could do this on awesome 3, which is installed on my laptop, but my roommates are firmly opposed to a tiling WM on the HTPC.
If anybody can provide suggestions, they will be very welcome.
    Cheers,

Howdy-ha- flamirande.  I don't want to be a total prick, as it's not my place; it's yours.  Xfwm or Awesome will get the job done, won't it?  You might be able to wow them if you get a universal remote and set up a proper lirc connection, letting them sit on the couch and have the power at the press of a finger.  I have some friends with XBMC (the real thing--a dedicated, old-school Xbox hacked with BSD for all their media),  and they're more satisfied with the results it provides than how it looks.  Yeah, their Win and Mac PCs (both my friends' and your roomates') give them Facebook and YouTube, but yours gives them music, movies and tv and internet on demand, at a smaller resource cost and with a more versatile core and interface.  If they're so touchy about polish, let them figure it out.  I'm not just saying this as the sorry excuse for a computer geek that I am, but also as a person who's been dealing with many roommates for roughly a decade. I mean I don't know your situation but what do they think, the setup you give 'em is supposed to get them attention?
If these folks can't be satisfied by the fact that your system can provide them with a reliable, versatile, centralized, kick-ass setup that theirs can't, well...
More constructively: If they just won't have it...maybe openbox and tint2?  You've got a low ram and cpu demand there, keeping music from skipping and video from tearing, if you work it out properly.  Openbox has always been my choice for the right balance between polish and minimalism.
