Looking for longlife storage solution - is tape still an option?

hi there,
im looking for a long life and very safe way for backing up 6 TB of data.
is the magnetic tape option reliable? or what would u suggest to go for?
thx
manuel

Tape is still very much a viable option, and is used regularly to backup petabytes of data on a daily basis.
At that capacity there are basically three different formats to consider, AIT (developed by Sony), LTO (from IBM/HP), and SDLT (from Quantum).
Of the three, LTO offers the highest speed and tape capacity with an LTO3 tape holding 400GB native (800GB at 2:1 compression) and a speed of 80MB/sec.
Behind that comes SDLT-II at 300GB per tape and 36MB/sec (the newer, bleeding-edge SDLT-III drives run 800GB per tape at 60MB/sec).
Trailing the list comes AIT at 200GB per tape and 24MB/sec.
Clearly, to manage terabytes of storage you need more than one tape, which is where autoloaders and libraries come into play - a chassis that contains multiple tapes and some robotic mechanism that transports the tapes from their storage bin to the tape drive mechanism itself. Larger units support multiple drive units in the box and potentially hundreds or thousands of tapes.
As for interface, SCSI is the predominant interface for tape backup, although Fiber Channel is sometimes an option.
There are FireWire options, too, but this is unlikely to be viable for your volume of data.
As for vendors, consider Quantum, Overland, Exabyte and ADIC.
Of the vendors mentioned, ADIC are probably the best at the high-end with Overland my preferred mid-level systems, and Exabyte at the lower end.
You should look at your data to decide a backup strategy before you go much further, though. Even though you have 6TB of data, you may find that once you have that backed up you only have a few hundred megabytes or gigabytes of data that changes frequently. Any decent backup software system will manage this for you, taking some of the pain out of knowing which tapes are needed when it comes to restore.
On that basis you may be able to leverage a lower-end tape library to manage the smaller amount of daily backup load rather than a 10TB monster capable of backing up your entire data set in an hour.
Also, when it comes to backup strategies, consider the value of a disk-to-disk-to-tape system (D2D2T). These systems backup data very quickly to disk-based storage and then backup the disk-backup to tape. This reduces the time it takes to backup the critical data and also means that recent changes can also be restored from disk, without the overhead of loading the correct tape and reading the data from there.

Im completely new to Mac. Im swapping my windows laptop for macbook pro and looking for network storage solution which the Time Capsule seems to do. Is it possible to use this as NAS for my desktop Windows PC - windows 7

Broadly speaking I want some sort of network storage( wireless or through my existing wifi router) that I can access files for both my windows PC and Macbook and also to access files to my iPad/ iPhone. Some sort of backup and sychronisation so that I can access certain files remotely.
Buy a real NAS.. synology or QNAP are the standard... although companies like Netgear and Western Digital and Seagate make them as well.
There is no problem sharing between Mac and PC now.. you do not even need a NAS to do that.. you simply share the hard disk directly. Mac talk SMB.. everything talks SMB nowadays.. so it is easy.
ipad and iphone are not designed to use NAS.. they are designed to backup only to the cloud or itunes.. but you can load an app like file browser if you want.
    http://www.stratospherix.com/products/filebrowser/
Remote access to the Apple TC is somewhere between difficult, to impossible from a PC.. Apple use BTMM and iCloud but the service is not offered to PC.
A real NAS will offer HTTPS or SFTP or several other methods.. that both Mac and PC can use.
You simply plug it into the current wireless router.. it is a network device and assessable over the network. It is not necessary to buy another router.. in fact that is a waste.

Apple seems to be naming their operating sytems usability based on the respective turd size of the feline in question. Lions are big, very, very, very big.
I had a system that served me well for 2 years until I mistaking bought a new machine which runs mega-turd (Lion). Foolish me, now nothing works properly, its a daily struggle to get anything working smoothly using my NEW mac mini. All my other machines work fine, even the windows machines and my Android tablet see all the network components and can talk to each other.
My Internet service is over 3g which I share to the house using internet sharing via my brand new €800 mac mini running POS Lion, everytime the service is interrupted, Kaboom, the mini resets the DHCP server, but doesn't seem to refresh any of the components so connections drop everywhere.
Its amateur hour at Apple folks.
There are several posts alone relating to internet sharing, I have submitted a bug report relating to the non user controllable DHCP server (which may be at fault), but the response / solution from Apple was lacklustre and ultimately didn't work.
    See this, there are some work around's in there;

  • Looking for a headphone solution editing surround

Looking for a headphone solution when editing suround environment in Soundtrack Pro 2. I have a Mac Pro. Is there any phones that would connect (direct or indirect) to the optical audio output, or do I need to buy a 5:1 speaker sound system with headphone jack?

Hey sorry for the late reply, I was busy to figure out alternatives as harman kardon was a difficult affair to find and acquire, but the good news is I managed to get hold of alternative.
Sony I assume recently launched a Bluetooth headphone DR-BTN200 which is compatible to my MacBook Air , iPad mini and android phone galaxy s2 with ease, the sound quality is pretty good as compared to other brands of Bluetooth headphones I checked compatible or incompatible to apple devices alike, this is definitely what I was looking for, costed me 7990 INR, this is highly recommended for ppl who are confused, I carried my devices to the store and checked before I bought a pair and pretty much happy,
The best part of this is its battery backup, I have used this hours for 3-5 days but this has not drain even then, but I do keep this charging once in 2-3 days just to keep this ready otherwise it does not even ask for it neither the quality of sound drops after 2-3 days of use.
This is over the ear headphone which is very soft but it's get sweaty around the ear I guess that's bound to happen.
Do get back to me for any other details, would be glad to share with all :)

  • Delivery analysis / Looking for a BEx solution

    Hello everybody,
I'm looking for an easy solution within the BEx. I would like (if possible) to avoid touching the data model.
Here what I would like to achieve:
Description of my desired report: delivery analysis ( number (quantity) ofdeliveries with X positions ).
    Output should look like this:
number (quantity) ofdeliveries with X positions
    Country              X=1        X=2      X=3    X=4    X=5   X=6   X=7   X=8   X=9    X= more than 10
    FR                        1451   407   377 and so on
    ES                        177     40    24   and so on
    IT                          173     66    44   and so on
For me its quite tricky. In my Cube (Multiprovider) there should be all information included.
I have country, delivery (itself) , number of deliveries, number of delivery positions )
How can I do that. Maybe with new calculated figure and a condition. Any ideas?
    Hope to hear from you.
    Best regards Harry

There is "array subset", which allows you to get any desired subset from an array. If yoyu want entire rows or colums, use "index array".
To display the last 30 values in a chart, just feed the data to a chart with the history size set to 30 elements. The rest will fall into place.

  • Looking for a nice solution for different cases with nearly same operations

    Hi everybody:
I'm looking for a nice solution for the following problem:
I'm measuring different data at the same time (with different devices).
I would like to save these data all in one array (or cluster?), but I
don't know exactly the way to do this. All values have corresponding
time values. So for one data type it would result in a 2d array,
wouldn't it? But how can I save different data types with their time
values in one array? Or should I take a cluster? And how can I get only
a certain type of data out of this array or cluster again? E.g. if I
only need data type "3" with its time stamps for evaluation? I would
really appreciate an example, I work with LV 7. Thanks!
Then - for evaluation - I only need one data type of these different
data. Which one I would like to choose via the frontpanel (it changes
from test to test). So, I thought of a case structure (where I can
choose which data type and correspondingly which evaluation way). The
evaluation steps for the different data types are quite the same, but
can vary in order of execution. I could write for every case the
(nearly) same evaluation steps, but this would take a lot of time, plus
if I need to change one step I need to change it in every case.
Does anybody know a better way?
Thank you very much in advance,
    Steffi

  • Looking for a correct solution for fast external drives

It is unfortunately after having bought already 8 LaCie external drives of 500 Gb to 1 Tb a few years ago (Firewire 400/800) for my MacPro that I heard from this forum that I should never use these drives for video backup because being unreliable. The poeple who said that were right. Out of the 8 drives, 6 are now dead (disc failures) and lost some precious files.
So now I am looking for a more reliable solution : I read somewhere that I could have for external storage a PCIe SATA controller w/ RAID performance; a solid SATA case for 4-8 drives perhaps. But when looking at SATA controller on the web, I am not certain whether all these cards work on a MacPro (the first Intel 2006 model with Mac OS Tiger 10) or just with Windows. Can someone advise me on what would be the right SATA card to buy for that computer, where to find them and what case I could link it to to install several hard drives ?
(By the way, my 4 hard drive racks inside the MacPro are all used already.

I’m on my third G-Tech external drive and I love their quality. I simply grew out of one and gave it to my son. The new mini works great too although my MacPro doesn’t like it when I partition the drive. It tends to stutter a bit and can lock things up on the MacPro. Still, I plan on buying the G-Safe as soon as I can. They certainly offer RAID Enterprise units although I haven’t used them. G-Tech uses Hitachi drives as the company is owned or associated with Hitachi. Either way, they’re hard to beat.

Hi OrganicBooks, and a warm welcome to the forums!
NAS seems to be all the rage these days, but having tried most backup methods available, I use Tri-Backup...

To backup any/all of my computers to Firewire drives on any other Networked Computer.
This method requires the Computers to be running, though it has an option to start the backups when they show up on the network.

  • Looking for 2 Product Solutions for eCommerce site created in Muse and published to BC

Seeking suggestions for 2 separate BC eCommerce website product applications: I have within BC so far about 200 image in the in a folder in the "File Manager" -AND- each image has been optimized as a low-res digital image down-load product (divided among 20 catalogs).
#1. Image downloads not for individual purchase but as (a bundle of 6 for one price) and (a bundle of 13 for second price) only.
I'm trying to customize two BC products a 6 Pack & 13 Pack of digital image downloads. Normally in BC, a visitor could purchase a single image as a downloadable product and after successful check-out they would receive an email containing the download links. I need to disable single unit purchases and enable the customer to ONLY select 6 images for one price -or- select 13 images for one price. After successful check-out they would receive links for either 6 download files or 13 based on their purchase. They could also purchase multiple pack sets.
#2. Allow the site visitor to select 12 images (from 200 images among 20 catalogs) for a 12 month custom calendar which would be printed and shipped. The BC product here would be a 12 month custom calendar. I have a product listed in BC as a "12-Month Custom Calender" and a display page titled the same. I have been looking into a drag n drop system that would allow the visitor to: purchase the product > select 12 images > submit their select by email to site admin.
I have limited coding skill and I should mention that I originally created and continue to add-on to the site with Adobe Muse. Because I chose to use Muse, I have been looking for solutions that I can embed in Muse pages as "Objects" as Muse will over-write BC custom elements as it is over-written. I have looked at either using a 12 field drag n drop which might work but I can't determine how to make the 20 catalogs available on the same page to select from.
    Can ANYONE offer suggestions?
    Thanks

Sorry but in no way will you get that to work using Muse.
You need to custom trigger the core functionality BC fires to add to cart in the system as well as update the visuals etc, and also overcome some of the BC scripting and what that does and function overrides etc. You need a high end front end developer at the least to be able to help you, and not using Muse.

    Hi,
We are looking for a manual or automated cloning solution for Oracle WebCenter Content (UCM), Imaging (ICM) and related products. Oracle FMW has T2P cloning option, but we are looking for more specific to just this product to clone and configure (if needed). Any help is appreciated.

    Hi
Assuming you have set up Purchasing with accrual method on receipt (and not on period end), you could enter the PO lines with receipt required. The receipt transactions you are uploading will generate the accounting to charge the expense accounts / or inventory valuation account.
There is no need to interface those also to Payables. In AP enter one invoice with the real monthly amount and match it to the purchase order level or to the receipts level. Approve and pay that invoice.

    Hello there,

    Yesssss
All apps I've found with "BPM counter"; "AUTO BPM", or just "BPM" are all tap ones.

  • Looking for additional storage to attach to xserve

I have a client that has filled up the space on their xserve. They would like to add a firewire 800 drive for additional storage. They cannot afford the Promise products. Does anyone have a recomendation? I would prefer if the additional storage was at least Raid 1. We have looked at everything from WD Raid 1 externals to Drobo. Reliablity is more imprtant than performance for now.
Message was edited by: harlan Lax

You will not get the performance from the Sonnet cards -especially in a RAID configuration- that you would expect. Those cards employ 'port multipliers' and any RAID configuration will be through software. You would better serve your client with an Areca product such as one of these:
    http://www.areca.com.tw/products/externalx.htm
as these employ a dedicated hardware I/O processor and do support EFI booting on Intel XServes. They are not cheap, around $600US from Newegg for the 1120ML, but they are not as expensive as a VTrak, either. Also, when buying disks for the storage array, avoid bulk OEM desktop class drives and invest in server class products such as the Western Digital RE3 or RE4 series drives.
