  • Looking for recommendations - new internal drive for MBP

    Hi all,
I have a 17" MBP core 2 duo from a couple of years ago, with a 100GB 7200rpm drive. I want to swap out the drive with a new 500GB drive, still 7200rpm, so I'm looking for recommendations as to what people think are the current best of the crop. Any suggestions?
    Cheers,
    Antonio

I was looking for a 500GB 7200RPM drive for my MBP 15" at the end of 2008, but no one made one yet. I saw the Seagate ST9500420ASG 500GB 7200RPM 16MB BUFFER SERIAL ATA listed as coming soon on MacMall and a few other places in January 2009 and ordered it as soon as it was available.
I had done some research on power consumption and performance... Tom's Hardware had some good info on the subject. The fastest drives at the time were the 320GB 7200 RPM and 500GB 5400 RPM. If the trends I came across during my research held up, power consumption for the new Seagate shouldn't have affected my battery life too much. All my research seemed to confirm this.
Now that I have been using the drive for a few months, I can tell you that my batter life has taken a HUGE hit. I used to easily get 5 hours with my old 120 GB stock drive... now, I'm lucky if I get 2 hours. Plus, it seems that this drive gets hot enough to cause performance issues.. I'm not sure if that's the case yet, but I will be bringing my MBP into the Apple store to check on it.
At this point, I'm willing to sacrifice some speed for more battery life and a cooler running computer.
All this to say, be sure you're willing to sacrifice some battery life for the biggest and fastest drive around.

  • Looking for an external hard drive for my ibook...

I know there are a lot of posts related to external hard drives, but I have very specific needs that haven't been answered as far as I can tell. I run Tiger 10.4.11 on my 1.33 ghz ibook (which WON'T DIE) and need a hard drive that:
    1) is Mac-friendly
    2) Can be set to do auto backup when I plug in my computer
    3) has at least 500GB storage
    4) has at least a 3-year warranty
    5) can run, power-wise, off my USB hub (though this is the least of my concerns, frankly)
    6) can be used with a Macbook when I buy one next year (very important)
I'm not so concerned with speed, as I will mostly be doing backup at night, while I'm asleep. Does such a drive exist for around $100?

    1) is Mac-friendly
98% of the drives meet this criteria
    2) Can be set to do auto backup when I plug in my computer
I don't know any drives that will do that. Some have buttons that allow you to do backup by pushing the button.
    3) has at least 500GB storage
    4) has at least a 3-year warranty
    A lot of those available.
    5) can run, power-wise, off my USB hub (though this is the least of my concerns, frankly)
Look for a "portable" external drive.
    6) can be used with a Macbook when I buy one next year (very important)
Any drive that matches the criteria above.
Does such a drive exist for around $100?
Yes many. You can watch Dealmac.com for hard drive deals. It is pretty easy to get 1 TB for $100 these days.

  • I use Djay for my Apple and I would like to use TC as an external hd to access from Djay, however when I look for my external T1 drive I cannot find it in iTunes so I can load onto Djay? Any help?

I use Djay for my Apple and I would like to use TC as an external hd to access from Djay, however when I look for my external T1 drive I cannot find it in iTunes so I can load onto Djay? Any help?

Initially, you asked if you can hardwire your MBA to the TC. The answer is yes, by using the optional USB Ethernet adapter that Apple provides. However, in order for your MBA to access the TC's internal or USB-attached HDD, it would need to establish a network connection to it. This would be true of any NAS device on an Ethernet network. Therein, lies the problem. Your MBA cannot connect to two networks simultaneously.
One option then, would be to have two separate iTunes Media folders; one on the MBA & the other on the TC. This way, you can download the music to your MBA when connected to the Internet at the AirPort lounge, and then use iTunes Consolidate Library feature to transfer the audio files to the TC's iTunes Media Folder location. A great program to help maintain multiple iTunes Librarys and/or Media Folders, that you may want to consider, is PowerTunes.

  • Looking for a back up drive for photos and videos that works with time machine, prefer wireless. Time capsule has poor reviews and already have BT hub

Looking for a back up drive for photos and videos that works with time machine, prefer wireless. Time capsule has poor reviews and already have BT hub that serves as a good router. 3gb or 4gb capacity preferred but 2 would suffice.

Plug a NAS into the BT Hub that does TM. Look at Synology.
You just use the wireless of the hub.
But the cheapest solution is still the TC.

  • Looking for a way to install Windows Intune via powershell

I'm very new to Powershell and completely lost on how to do this.
Looking for a way to install Windows Intune via powershell from a self extracting zip file I will send to remote users. This will also need to run Corp admin level privileges to install.
Thank you in advance for your help.

    Hi Mtirado,
For Windows Intune issue, I recommemd you can post in dedicated forum for more effective support:
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?category=windowsintune
If you get the initial Powershell script, and the script encounter error or problem, you can post back with current script and issue.
    Thanks for your understanding.

  • Looking for certain Surveillance Camera

    Hello,
I am looking for a wireless surveillance camera.  The catch is though; I need it to be battery powered.  I have found many wireless products, but they are truly worthless when I have to run a power cable to them. (To me, that's not wireless).  Anyhow, I have ran across a few products from various websites...but do not like the details I find. The three main features I'd need the camera to have is 1. Battery Powered 2. Wireless Access to either the network, or to a server 3. Fully DVR Capabilities.  I understand that micro SD cards are the new thing, this would be great, but I have not found a battery powered camera that has DVR on a camera card, but instead a server.  I assume this is because the DVR features require more power, thus limiting the camera lifetime on a battery to be a significant amount less.  I could get by if the camera sends the video to a DVR server elsewhere. (Preferably with a decent distance too!)
    Thanks for any suggestions!

I think that for most of us, storing video at 176Mb/s might be overkill. I didn't take much video with the GH3 I rented because I was busy learning to shoot photographs, however, the 72Mb/s I-Frame recording mode seems clean enough to me. I didn't see any artifacts that didn't belong, and it certainly looked better than the HDV I got out of the Sony HDR-FX1that I have been shooting with since 2004.
However, with the new, relatively inexpensive memory cards, and the low price per Terabyte of hard drives nowadays, why not store at 176Mb/s?
What I really want, and I think we are close, is to have the equivalent of shooting RAW. When I take a photograph on the GH3, the amount of manipulation I can do to adjust the white balance and other features is amazing. Can you imagine how nice it would be to open a video in Premiere Pro and get a window that looks something like this one that I get when opening a RAW photo? All of the data is there, the camera does not get an opinion as to what it should look like (like it does when it shows you the JPG file).

  • HT1923 Can not uninstall old version because the file it is looking for is not found on windows 8.1

First off I want to start that I am an IT professional, so not a dumb PC user.
I am running Windows 8.1.  I have been running Itunes for a long time and when the auto-updater prompted me for an update, I used that to update.  Aparently something happened during one of the updates and Windows thinks I have v 11.1.1.1 installed as well as the newest version.  I discovered this when I connected my Ipod recently (It was a few months since my last sync) and it wasn't be recognized by Itunes.  Windows discovered it as a device but Itunes wouldn't see it.  I went to the forums/support and tried the trouble shooting steps to no avail.  I finally did the normal "uninstall/reinstall" process and that is when I saw the two entries in the programs list in windows.  I uninstalled the current version.  When I tried to reinstall it would error out with "can not find the path to  iTunes64.msi".  I had a few of them in the path but they were for newer versions, not the 11.1.1.1.  Then I looked around and saw the directory tree for Itunes were still there.
I tried to edit the registry in the local machine->uninstall hive but itunes was not on the list there because I went through every entry.  They all had the names from programs on the list but Itunes wasn't there.  I uninstalled everything else as per the Itunes support instructions (Quicktime/Bonquor/Etc) and still it didn't work.  I deleted the Itunes directory manually and then ran CC cleaner to a few times to clean out all the broken registry entries.  After that was done I still couldn't install Itunes because it detected the program from the list in windows that said it was installed (v 11.1.1.1).  I restored the directory from my recycle bin, launched the exe directly and it worked and I was able to detect/sync my Ipod.  BUT the system doesn't think I have it installed so I have to manually kick it off from the exe itself.
I want to fix this.  I would think it would be to edit something, registry I assume, that populates that installed program list and then the newest installer should run fine.  I am stuck so I am looking for help.  Any suggestions/ideas or anything?
    Thank you in advance.

I can't seem to find a way to delete this...SO I unmarked it as a question.
I solved the problem, I aparently missed the program ID number when I searched.  I found it and then went through the registry and removed the other references to that ID.  Once I did that I was able to install the new Itunes without incident.  In the process it also cleaned up the old entry on my programs/features list.
Even though I checked the registery 2x trying to clean up references to Itunes, the search and my manual look through the Uninstall entries I missed it.  Sorry to waste anyone's time.

  • Driver for LJET 3 printer under Windows 7 (64bit).

It's a perfectly good printer that I bought in 1980s and it's been working great for all these years under the Windows all the way up to and including XP. Recently  I had to replace my XP PC by a Windows 7 (64bit) PC and I can't find a driver for it. Perhaps if anyone knows where I can get it...
There is also an issue with the cable - my new PC does not have a parallel port, so, I want to connect it to a USB port with a special cable "USB to Parallel IEEE 1284", which I assume is not going to give me "plug-and-play". When I click on Start ->Printers and Devices I can see a new device, IEEE-1284 Controller, not under Printers but under Unspecified.  It shows that there is no hardware assigned to it. Is it going to be possible for me to "assign" somehow my LJET-3 to that controller?

The problem is "solved" for individual consumers, but NOT SOLVED for those who work in companies with managed networks.  There's no way our proxy server is going to permit company-owned computers to connect directly to Windows Update.  The tech support people here have done what they can to look for a workaround, but there appears to be none.
I guess I can see this kind of brush-off happening with a cheap consumer printer.  However, this is a business-class product, so I'm surprised that HP didn't come up with a solution for business users who are very happy with their 1220Cs and who are still buying plenty of "genuine HP" ink cartridges at non-discount prices.
Is it that big a deal to make a generic driver available in downloadable form?
I realize I'm wasting my breath, but I'm disappointed -- and a bit surprised that HP would consider theirhalf-hearted response to be a "solution."   HP is telling us that it wants to "make it matter," but it is still trying to find its way.

  • Looking for ibook video camera

I am looking for one that offers the following.
    1) Is priced under $400
    2) Has a light
    3) Can plug into my VCR so I can make duplicates or send people my tapes.
    4) Uses digital tapes
    5) Can plug into my ibook G4 via Firewire or USB 2.x
    6) Has a color viewfinder (most seem to have a black and white viewfinder).
    Thanks,
    John

I have an old PowerPC dual G5 running 10.4.11 and I'm working on some HD projects at the moment, so it certainly can be done on your machine. Upgrading/extending your RAM might be a good idea though; is that possible on your machine?
If you go HD with the HF-S100, you'll need to be thinking about hard drive space; you'll need a lot of it; it's gonna add up quick. To use content from that camera (which is AVCHD format), you'll be converting it to Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) to use in FCE (iMovie will be doing the same thing internally, if you use that), and the file sizes are large. I've got a 12 second clip here on my desktop from an HF100 converted to AIC that's 169MB. So do the math... If you're doing a lot of filming you'll need to have a plan for backing up and archiving...offline storage perhaps.
But otherwise I think you've got a machine that will be OK, although I wonder if you have enough RAM....

  • Time Machine stuck at "Looking for backup disk" after installing Windows 8 via Boot Camp

I've been backing up via Time Machine to an external USB drive and it's been working fine. I recenty installed Windows 8 via Boot Camp and now TM gets stuck forever at "Looking for backup disk...".
I've tried the following, to no avail:
Using "Select Disk" in TM preferences to re-select the disk
    Deleting /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
    Running system maintenance via Onyx
    Resetting PRAM
Formatting the drive and setting it up for TM backups again
The Boot Camp partition is on the same drive as OS X (on a 180GB Intel 330 series SSD). During the Windows installation I re-formatted the partition as NTFS.
If I start OS X in Safe Boot mode, TM backups work. In Safe Boot mode, the NTFS partition isn't loaded so I suspect it has something to do with this. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I installed Paragon NTFS for Mac and it started working all of a sudden.

  • Windows 7 with iTunes 10.5 keeps telling me iTunes quit working, looking for solution, then tells me Windows will let me know when they find a solution. Help, my phone needa to be synched.

Windows 7 with iTunes 10.5 loaded and working until I try to update apps or synch my iPhone 4. Windows says iTunes quit working and is looking for solution, then no solution but they tell me if they find one.

    Hi Lorheak,
thanks for the quick reply. I had the same idea already yesterday. I use Norton Internet Security for a long time now without any problems. I think this a Apple or Microsoft problem, because the popup window which appear come from Windows DEP. I got no message from the firewall with any problem. I check the log files from Norton and Windows already but find nothing. This is a very strange problem. In the past I have had a lot of other problems with iTunes upgrades. Everytime I accept the installation of the newest version I got errors regarding missing "msi" files.
    Greetings Gert
