Looking for Opinions on a base Mac Pro system for running FCP.

I am being asked to make a recommendation for acquiring a Mac Pro to use for video production, and I need advice. I am not sure what I should recommend. I suppose almost any Mac Pro, even the lowest model, would suffice for my needs right now. But I could sure use some input based on what we need to do now, and where we need to go.
Right now, I want a system for Web video production. Not sure what camera will be used, but lets assume high def for now. The delivery format will likely be Flash video. And none of the pieces would be over 3 minutes in length. I'd think that was well within the capabilities of even the most basic Mac Pro, but I am not sure.
Now, let's say I want to eventually expand out to make 30 second TV spots in high definition. Assuming I have access to a good deal of storage space and I am not looking to do 30 layers of video each with 10 effects (more like 3 max with just a few effects), can I still get away with this system? Would I need a beefier video card? Or some type of external RAID storage?
Money is and +is not+ an object in this case. I'd rather spend a little more cash now to accommodate my future needs (say, by getting a more robust video card and more memory), but I don't need to fully max out the system either for what seems to be rather modest expectations.
If I can provide any other explanations or define any further constraints, please ask. Thanks for any help you can lend.

I have a Mac Pro tower am running OSX and iTunes will not work. It has always worked flawlessly. I can see all my iTunes content- my playlists, my songs et cetera, But I cannot play anything. The progress bar is  'stuck'...any suggestions?

Thanks. I have been using iTunes since its inception and have never had a problem...I'm using the latest version. The progress bar is the bar that moves when you're playing a song..it just won't start when I double click on a song,..have tried quitting, rebooting etc but nothing works. Apple are useless-they have told me twice they've tried to call me 'momentarily', but I've been waiting by the phone, and they definitely have not tried to call...

  • Illustrator CS3 and CS4 crashes on two different Mac Pro systems

We have two Mac pro systems. Both are running 10.5.6. As of this morning both systems crash when trying to save files from Illustrator CS3 and CS4.
I'm not sure if this started with a corrupted file, and when we tried to work with it on both machines it effected both.
    Does anyone have an idea?

    Do use TimeMachine for data;
    SuperDuper for imaging the system;
Clone the system at least twice: known good backup image and for testing.
Clone or image can be just a sparse image created with Disk Utility.
I would also keep user accounts separate from the system and on 2nd drive.
Rather than reinstall, use alternate systems. You may even need to do what others have learned to, one system for specific task or configuration.
    Use different user accounts.
Don't rule out plist or preference settings or corruption.
Normally I use Disk Warrior to keep a system maintained but TechTool Pro (5.01) will do more to check files for integrity and errors, and useful addition.
If I was building a sytem today, I'd probably use 10K WD VelociRaptor or two for system, some scratch drives in stripped RAID for editing and saving work, and then media drive(s). With 3 backup sets of work.
Apple now sells OS X 10.5.6 on DVD, replacing the 10.5.4 (and 10.5.0, shame there is no upgrade program) so they must feel 10.5.6 is gold. Not all software and hardware though does, but Sonnet just posted updates for their SATA Tempo card drivers. When it comes to production, newest and latest is not usually best.

    Hey ynareshbabu,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are having issues with your keyboard. The following article provides some great troubleshooting steps:

I bought a new Mac Pro and migrated my FCP from my old one. But the new old won't accept my product serial number. Help!

Was the FCS on your old machine an upgrade? You will need to enter your original, full version serial first, and then you will be prompted for the upgrade serial number.
    Hope this helps.

  • Powercore core express (3.0.2) and overloads on mac pro systems

    Hi,
just found this info regarding the 3.0.2 software update for TC powercore:
"Known issues: On some Mac Pro systems, loading multiple plug-ins on a powercore express can create overloads and drop-outs. If you experience this please get in touch with TC support team"
    Cheers Eddie

    Hi,
I have the same problem.  Moved my M500 960 Gb from my MBP 17" early 2011 due to graphic card failure (a shame Apple does not offer a recall for this factory faulty units), and then purchased a USB 3.0 enclosure and when connected to my MBP 15" purchased on may 2014, it finds the drive and then drops it almost immediately with the disconnection message usually OS X shows when abruptly disconnecting a mounted drive.
Maybe the drive is dwaing too much power from the USB ? Maybe OS X is dropping the connection due to a driver problem ? I don't know for sure.
I hope someone could give us some light and this could be solved without having to carry around a powered USB hub.
    Regards.

  • Mac Pro can't running two fire wire hard disks at the same time .

Mac Pro can’t running any two fire wire hard disks at the same time . which two hard disks have extra power from power socket . If i just insert one of them .No problem . If connect two Hds at the same time. Leopard cant find it and the Hds seem no problem. the machine must be restarted and then use one . No problem . I have formated the HD many times .even if which format is Fat 32 or Mac issue persists .Boot from installation CD used the disk utility . Issue stills . If i used one fire wire HD that get power from power socket and used one fire wire device . Leopard was no problem during this time . Whether is this design problem or my machine hardware problem? My Mac has been changed the logic board by Apple service . Do you have similar case in here????

I connect both hard disks that get power from power supply normally. Also have ever changed the format as GUID. Which always use the power cord . I felt confusion why the issue just happened connect both hard disks with extra power at the same time. If i used one hard disk connect to firewire port . Another firewire port connect other firewire device . No problem at all.

  • Looking for advice on a new Mac Pro system mainly for Final Cut Studio 2

We are a small video production company that works mainly on broadcast and internet projects. We're looking to upgrade from an aging Avid system to a Mac Pro running Final Cut Studio 2. The primary thing we want from this system is to be able to work quickly in Final Cut while at the same time doing other operations, and we're willing to spend what it takes to make that happen. We've done a lot of research but still have some issues where we could use your expertise - it's a big investment and we want to nail it.
    Here's the configuration we're considering:
    Processor: Two 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (8-core)
    Memory: 16GB (4 x 4GB)
Hard Drives: 300GB 15,000-rpm SAS (for OS X, Final Cut, & other programs) plus 2 x 1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s (for video storage)
    Graphics: NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600
We're thinking about spending the extra $1600 to get the best processor available, since we want this machine to be the hub of the business for about five years. Any thoughts on whether to save a bit and go with the 2.8GHz? We've also heard the bus speed presents a bottleneck so the Quad-Core processing power can't be fully utilized - should that have any bearing on our processor decision?
The memory choice seems right - we'll see how well that works and retain the option to double the RAM, particularly as prices fall and new applications or hardware upgrades become tenable. However, we're thinking of perhaps buying some or all of the memory third-party - any advice on whether this tends to be worthwhile, where to get it, and what to watch out for? It looks like there may some issues with getting proper heat-sinking.
We like the hard drive plan, though we've heard a 15,000-rpm drive may generate a lot of heat - any thoughts on this?
The graphics card is where we're most torn - specifically between the Quadro 5600, the GeForce 8800, or perhaps even getting the computer with the standard card (or no card) and getting a different third-party card. We do mostly DV now, but we foresee doing HD projects in the future. We often use a green-screen that's in our studio and also apply minimal 3D effects as well as 3D text. We're debating whether to get the Quadro 5600 right off the bat and hopefully have no issues with it, or whether to get the GeForce 8800 for now and if we have issues then consider upgrading to the Quadro 5600 or potentially something else that would best suit our needs at that time. Would love to receive any and all advice on this issue.
Also, it looks like we're gonna buy Final Cut Studio 2 and are considering also getting Final Cut Server. It seems the combination would allows us to use the Final Cut suite on other computers (both Mac and Wintel) that don't have their own version of Final Cut installed. Is that the correct interpretation? Any other advice on whether to get FC Server would be appreciated.
Thanks very much for reading - we look forward to getting any and all advice you may have.

*Don't do it!* Stick with the dual-2.8GHz config. A jump from that to the dual-3.2GHz gains you only an approximate 9% increase in power at a 52% increase in cost! Not worth it all. That money is much wiser spent on RAM, RAID array, or a broadcast monitor.
    Memory: 16GB (4 x 4GB)

The processor is only one part of the whole, and as I just mentioned, the power:cost benefits are not good.

Quadro 5600 is pricey, but I'm not sure about its benefits for people in our field. Even if I had the money for it, I would be hard pressed to consider it considering, again, money is liekly wiser spent elsewhere.

I don't know much about FCServer, but my impression is that it is -- simply speaking -- Final Cut version of Avid Unity. In other words, I am pretty certain that your understanding on that is false. I may be wrong.

And many other online vendors are good sources of both hard drives and/or RAM. As long as the RAM you purchase meets the required specifications outlined in the user manual and/or specifications you should be OK. Note that the specifications include the Apple-specified heat shield.
Any 3.5" SATA drive will work. You can get benchmarks and reviews at Bare Feats, Storage Review, and Tom's Hardware Review.

  • I paid for lion because my 2006 mac pro will not run anything newer (arbitrary decision by apple). Downloaded it, but nothing happened. App Store now says i've already downloaded it, so I can't try again. App store also says lion isn't available in usa.

I found out that an 06 mac pro cannot be updated to anything more recent than lion. They guys at the local shop told me this after they tried to update it for me so I could run logic pro 9 in 64 bit mode. I bought lion. Waited two days for the emails. Spent hours following the instructions which sounded so simple until you try them. Finally I found the "redeem" button that was hidden because the size of my safari window was too small to show it and there was no bar at the bottom to scroll over. Without googling "how do you find the app store" and "how do you find quick links" I never would have figured it out. I only mention this so that others may learn from my mistakes. Finally I downloaded lion, supposedly, but nothing happened. There is no indication that anything downloaded, other than the fact that when I try to download it again, it says it's already been downloaded. I spent four hundred bucks at the shop updating, plus whatever they charged me for lion, and I've still got snow leopard and logic pro running at 32 bits. I'm pretty sure nobody can help me, but could you please arrange for the return of my time?

You can go to "Purchases" tab and check again.
If OS X Lion is still not downloading, try at a different network environment.
By the way, Mac Pro (2006) with a newer graphics card runs Mavericks perfectly with modifications in the installer.
It's not allowed to be discussed here, but you can simply google how to do it.

  • No audio for Mac Pro (mid-2012) running Win8.1 on Boot Camp

I've seen discussions around the 'net centered around this difficulty for Macbook users, but users experiencing this with a full-size (desktop) Mac Pro are hard to find. My mid-2012 Mac Pro, (running Yosemite on the Mac side) recently got entangled in the world of Boot Camp when I recently installed Windows 8.1, and I have since been unable to produce audio output from the Line Out. (My headphone output works fine, though it feels like browser audio seems a bit subdued. That's a topic for another discussion, though.) Most of the forum solutions for Macbooks that I've seen involve updating audio drivers, but I can't find any links or recommendations relevant to a mid-2012 Mac Pro. Has anybody else suffered this problem, and managed to conquer? I really don't want to get caught up in ping-pong between Apple's support geeks and Microsoft's nerds.

Hi, sede my blog, the only solution is on it.

  • Mac Pro / System Gets "Choppy" / File Goes Missing

    Hi all,
I recently got a Mac Pro Quad-Core ($2,499 stock model) MB871LL1/A. I am using a Microsoft Intellimouse Optical and MS Comfort Curve Keyboard 2000 that did not come with the system itself that has never given me problems before.
For the first few nights, everything seemed fine with the included iLife apps (such as iMovie, iDVD, etc)
I later received the Final Cut Studio 3 Upgrade last night, so I installed and started experimenting with applications. Namely. FCP and Motion. Earlier projects were updated and saved and rendered speedy and normal.
Two things happened while rendering a NEW project with either Motion 4 itself as well as Compressor 3.5:
    ISSUES:
    1. Mouse movement became extremely erratic, and the cursor would jump across the screen instantaneously. I couldn't control the mouse at all. Every movement would cause the cursor to jump around erratically. It felt like someone may have been sabotaging the mouse movement! I turned Bluetooth off as well as disconnected my LAN cable just to be sure. Still happening.
    2. System 'responsiveness' became very choppy, and in some cases would remain that way after closing the apps (though not always).
    3. I rebooted my system and reloaded my project. The project used just one font (Garamond). Motion reported that the font was missing - I checked with Font Book as well as the /Fonts directory itself and Garamond was indeed erased from the system.
    SOLUTIONS?
I tried using "Rember" (freeware memtest app) and RAM checked out fine. Disk Utility reported the disk was fine.
I may consider re installing everything before my Genius Bar appointment (next available is "Tuesday 9:15am" at my nearest store), and I'd like to think that it's just this project file causing the problem (it's basically one Camera that dollies forward through four words in 3d space, pretty simple). However I want to prevent this from happening again and I'm worried there might be something wonky in the hardware on my Mac.
I know this is all very strange, but has anyone heard of an issue like this or might know why that was happening?

Jumpy mice gets mentioned, some attribute it to video problems I think.
I assume you have the latest MS Optical driver.
Always clone a system before installing apps or updates so you have a backup you can boot from.
Don't rely on just Apple DU First Aid. Time to invest in 3rd party, though if you plan on jumping to Snow immediately might want to wait on that.
You may find 3GB RAM is just not going to cut it though, that is extremely minimum and base system, not what you want for what you are doing. With quad 4-dimm setup, I'd look at either 4 x 2GB or 3 x 4GB to give you 8-12GB RAM. 3 x 2GB should be minimum (unless just using it for email and web).
Also, optimize your files and storage if you haven't: boot drive, editing and scratch, media files on 3rd drive, maybe setup 2-3 drive RAID at some point.
Lot of adjusting and changes that go along with any new system regardless of what you ran before.

  • My mac pro 2008 is running very very slow. I need to give it a good clean.Any suggestions?

My 2008 mac pro is running slower and slower, what can I do to get it running faster?

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.
