Looking for recommendation for MacBook Pro display

I have a mid-2011 27" iMac and I'm going to buy a 15" MacBook Pro. Should I get sn Apple Thunderbolt Display or use my 2011 display? My thoughts are that I could recoup the costs of the display by selling my iMac, I have 32GB of RAM upgraded, but everything is standard. I think the display is the same, but I'm not sure how everything will play together.
Any opinions or ideas?

Different resolutions for Macbook Pro display and External display

Is it possible to have different resolutions for a Macbook Pro and an external display. I prefer to see less but larger on my Macbook Pro whilst seeing more but smaller on my external display. I use the DVI output to connect to an Acer 22in display.

allow me to chime in:
You are absolutely correct!
In 'Mirroring Mode' both internal and external display have the same resolution.
Only in 'Extended Mode' you can have different resolutions for both displays.

I've heard different things about the retina display and that people only get it to edit photos etc but then people have said that it is quicker and makes the laptop lighter. I'm also unsure of how much storage I will need. If anyone can help that would be great!!

There are two screen displays available - Retina and non-Retina - and there's a world of difference between them. The Retina has non-user replaceable RAM and flash storage (well, the latter without voiding your warranty) and the non-Retina has user replaceable RAM and HD/SSD. And then, of course, there's the difference in the resolution of the screen itself... and a difference between the 13" and 15" screens (available in both 'flavors').
How much storage you need will depend on your needs.
I don't recommend the Retina models at this time - too many issues with tinting (on Samsung displays) and image retention (on LG displays).
So take a look at what the non-Retina machines have to offer - you can customize to your heart's content but remember that you can always upgrade the RAM and the hard drive in the non-Retina machines yourself.

And if so, would the Macbook be able to access the external hard drives that are connected to the iMac? Or do the external hard drives have to be connected to the Macbook Retina?
Retina's picture quality is just incredible but compared to Macbook Pro non-retina you sacrifice: disc drive, port options, customization, anti-glare screen. And its more expensive. Arghh

I would use the retina as the primary screen for the canvas and viewer, while putting the browser and timeline on the iMac.
Apple won't help here. Unfortunately, they leave they're old products in the dust and wouldn't waste time writing an article about connecting a macbook retina to an '07 iMac.

A basic MBA will be more than adequate. Take into consideration that storage may be a long term issue unless you are not averse to traveling with an external HDD.

Sounds just like what was happening with my Alum MB. I took it in and they replaced my battery. It seems to be ok now. I don't know what it is, but my battery was fine before 10.5.6 and the same timeframe of the firmware updates when they came out.
My battery health was jumping around but was fine before all of this happened. Unfortunately at 381 cycles I don't think you have much chance of getting the battery for free. Perhaps you can complain about the battery saying it was fine until 10.5.6 or whatever. Broadly speaking I want some sort of network storage( wireless or through my existing wifi router) that I can access files for both my windows PC and Macbook and also to access files to my iPad/ iPhone. Some sort of backup and sychronisation so that I can access certain files remotely.
Buy a real NAS.. synology or QNAP are the standard... although companies like Netgear and Western Digital and Seagate make them as well.
There is no problem sharing between Mac and PC now.. you do not even need a NAS to do that.. you simply share the hard disk directly. Mac talk SMB.. everything talks SMB nowadays.. so it is easy.
ipad and iphone are not designed to use NAS.. they are designed to backup only to the cloud or itunes.. but you can load an app like file browser if you want.

Remote access to the Apple TC is somewhere between difficult, to impossible from a PC.. Apple use BTMM and iCloud but the service is not offered to PC.
A real NAS will offer HTTPS or SFTP or several other methods.. that both Mac and PC can use.
You simply plug it into the current wireless router.. it is a network device and assessable over the network. It is not necessary to buy another router.. in fact that is a waste.

I see a mention of Google Chrome and VirtualBox in your log. Stop using those and see if the situation changes? From what we know so far, the problem is a software one (Apple's fault), not a hardware problem. Mountain Lion is supposed to fix the issue, which should be out in about a week. So you could wait til then, upgrade to ML, and see if its still crashing or not.
